This book is a top-notch history of where we have been as a society dealing with children with special needs. It lays the groundwork for many of the programs and ideas we have today. Definitely worthwhile reading.

It is difficult to believe that I would be the first to sing the praise of Ms. Featherstone's book on Amazon. This is a MUST READ for professionals going into the field of individuals with intellectual disabilities and the families who love them. As a sibling of a man with Down Syndrome I couldn't have written a better book myself. And as a Adult Sibling Selfhelp Support Group Facilitator I couldn't recommed a better book to my fellow siblings.

Although I have been aware of my daughter's disability for years, I found Ms. Featherstone's book to be a source of support and understanding which I couldn't find elsewhere. This book covers a wide range of disabilities from physical, to mental, to emotional handicaps and gives first-hand accounts from people who have various relationships with the disabled. I recommend this book to anyone who is searching for a niche in the world as a relative to a someone with a disability.

I discovered this book shortly after my daughter was born with a severe orthopedic birth defect, and it helped me a great deal to cope during those early months. Just reading other families' stories--and seeing that there are many ways for children to develop and be loved--was a genuine inspiration. The author's special vantagepoint, as both the mother of a disabled child and a specialist in child development, lends both sensitivity and objectivity to the writing. If you "don't know what to say" to a friend or relative who is facing this crisis, let this book do the communicating...

These are my kind of fables! I love the different points of view. It's past time people on the spectrum and people with a myriad of challenges had a turn at bat.

As a child, I said I didn't like "stories with morals" because they were the kind "people tell when they're mad at you." This is a refreshing change of pace from the preachy, personal dig and judgmental tone that many moralistic tales take. Kudos to this book!

Searching for a book on fables / folktales and was delighted when I came across this book. Although illustrated and retold by adults with disabilities, I think this is a great book to encourage and empower students of all backgrounds, special needs or ELL. I especially like the section of "What This Story Means to Me" after each fable.

Inspiring for all ages!

This is a charming and unque book. The artists' stories provide a nice counterpoint to the fables. Having not read Aesop's fables since I ws a child, I was amazed how insightful and apropos they remain. This book would make a nice inspirational gift.

I am new to the Early Intervention world and there are so many medical diagnosis and medical conditions out there I am very thankful that this book was available to me. It is simple to find what you are looking for and gives you the definition in layman's terms. It also gives definitions for acronyms used in the medical field. I would recommend it to anyone in the Early Intervention field!

Effective Reading Strategies: Teaching Children Who Find Reading Difficult is a wonderful handbook for teachers who need ideas for those children who need extra support in learning to read. The clear writing and the many excellent research-based examples make this title one that teachers will turn to again and again. I particularly like Chapter 6, Nurturing Fluent Reading. Fluency strategies are often neglected, and can not only improve student fluency but also their comprehension. I highly recommend this book!

I often find trouble locating a book centered on EQUALLY helping early childhood teachers and elementary teachers give reading instruction ot children who approach it with difficulty. Mostly the books I find overwhelmingly focus on elementary-aged children while leaving the First, Second, and Third Graders a little out of the limelight.

This book (now in its 3rd and best-yet edition) remedies that vacancy by offering a balanced approach to teaching reading that will work for struggling as well as advanced readers through MOSTLY (not all) developmentally appropriate methods.

Chapters 3-5 (on preparing the reader to read) will change the way you view your instruction.

Dr. Rasinski's book offers a motivational read regarding effective reading strategies for all readers. He refers to many case studies on what current, effective, research proven instructional methods create the most success for struggling readers. This book would be a great read for teacher trainees working in the field of reading, university level professors looking for a text for reading remediation, and any primary level teacher. Information provided in the book is well worth the cost.

The truth is Veronica Crawford is a very strong person. She overcame alot of problems caused mainly by her ADHD and low self image. She has a huge heart and is only looking out for the best interest of her students. LDI has helped several students live independently, who would not be able to without this program. She has devoted her life to helping individuals overcoming their hidden disabilities. I recently have read this book and have gained a new respect for Veronica and all of her accomplishments. I also gained knowledge about myself and my sister who also suffers from ADD. Veronica and her book has changed my life and enlightened me to others.

I recently finished reading the book Embracing the Monster by Veronica Crawford. In a word, my reaction is magnificent. Ms. Crawford describes her struggles in dealing with her hidden disabilities honestly and poignantly. As a clinical supervisor for counselors, and as an Adjunct Professor, I will use her book when training counseling. I recommend Ms. Crawford's book without reservation to parents, persons who have a disability, school personnel, and mental health providers.

In From Stumbling Blocks to Stepping Stones, Shari so poignantly describes the suffering she experienced as a learning-disabled child, yet her sense of humor and determination shine through. It jars the imagination to realize that a child deemed uneducable--even recommended for institutionalization--became a poised and gifted national lecturer with her master's degree in education!

Shari is one of those rare people whose speaking and writing incites a lump in the throat one moment, then bursts of laughter and cheers the next, all for a child who beat incredible odds. Her insights about educational methods that helped and hindered her will impact teachers and offer great hope to struggling students and the parents who love and guide them.

This book is excellent for revealing what is going on in the mind of a child who has learning issues. It's not just behavior (although it is always present, but never an excuse to associate as the cause for learning problems),there are valid medical tests that prove such. We are seeing more and more of these children with learning difficulities and we best be prepared with resource materials and an instructor who knows how to work with these children. Thanks Shari for sharing your life with us.

This is a MUST READ handbook for any family with a child with 'less visible' or learning disabilities.

Although I have no diagnosable learning disabilities, Ms Gold points out that we each learn in our own style, which can translate into stronger and weaker styles. Then she proceeds to inform on how to strengthen our weaker styles. This book is for everyone who is curious about the way we learn and for anyone who would like to strengthen their comprehension and learning speed. Great practical advice. Highly recommend. We recently found out our son has genius IQ, auditory processing problem and needs occupational therapy for his handwriting. Problem is, we live in Kuwait where there are no services in private schools. I ordered several books and this one has given me the most help to help him. We are working through it and he is reversing his b and d's less and learning organizational skills. So often it is assumed that kids know how to do all these things, but they need to be taught how. Thank you for putting together a sequential set of activities to help children. It is also written in an easy to understand way.

I have taught children with learning disabilities for many years and yet this book offers ways to reorganize my thinking about any student that struggles. It's not that I haven't thought about some of these things before, but this book reminds me to observe behaviors I sometimes overlook in the press of daily teaching chores. You know how special education teachers are always seeking ways "to change the brain". Well, it is apparent that it is also Ms. Gold's objective and she offers effective examples to get a teacher moving in the right direction to do this.

This wonderful lesson in empathy helps us realize thatso-called "special-needs" people are a lot more like therest of us than they are different.

When I first read this book I cried. It is a great tale about a girl with down's syndrome named Cindy. She finds a puppy that she befriends and is forced later in the book to give up the puppy. It is a heart warming tale that children can identify with. We've all lost something we loved, whether it be a family member, a pet, or even a favorite blanket. In educational terms, it is filled with sight words and many new vocabulary words. It also introduces young readers to diversity and is a great way to teach children about disabilities.

It has amazing heart and soul and mystery and reality.

I am in awe of what Nan Gregory has been able to accomplish by page 2, the respect she has for her young audience's intelligence, and for all the seeds of other stories she plants along the way but chooses not to tell. Ron Lightburn's gorgeous, moody, illustrations help draw the reader (or listener) into Cindy's world, far away from sentimentality and cuteness. A great book; one day hope to read it (and Charlotte's Web) aloud without sobbing. Please give us more of Cindy.

Giggle is a nine-year-old ghost who works magic, plays tricks, rescues animals, and even goes to the moon! She is also friends with two humans, Rusty and Lenore, as well as a six-year-old wind from the North Pole named Gusty. Giggle also has some grown-up neighbors that include a piccolo-playing ghost, a wise ghost from the synagogue, and a motherly lady skeleton. Giggle and her family are happy spirits who live in the bell tower of Father Boyle's church. Illustrated with b/w cartoon drawings, the nine short stories comprising It's Great To Be A Ghost! is an especially recommended and totally fun reader for children grades 3 through 6.

The stories of Giggles the ghost and her friends are so fun and enjoyable! Your child(ren) will appreciate these magical charming little stories, and as a parent you will remain confident that he or she is learning some very important lessons too - tolerance and respect for all religions and people - even if they are green or blue! The large easy-to-read print, imaginative plot lines, and adorable illustrations will keep your child(ren) interested and their imaginations running wild! Kudos to Lynn Schiffhorst for such delightful well written stories - I hope to see more of her work on bookshelves soon! A true treasure that belongs in every elementary schooler's collection... Purchase it, read it, and enjoy it - you won't be disappointed!

I gave this book after reading it myself to my neighbor, Sonya, who is 9 years old . Sonya loves the idea of friendly ghosts and was thrilled when she saw the cover with Giggle's picture. These stories teach tolerance and multiculturalism with subtlety. They are informative, colorful stories that even adults can enjoy. My personal favorite story was about the Thanksgiving cat. And the great thing about Amazon is that the books arrive quickly. My order was even individually shrinkwrapped. Good choice and because it's a reader, it both educates and entertains. Good show, Lynn Schiffhorst!

Finally, a great book on Ghosts for children!

As a parent of an 8 year old, I was thrilled to have purchased such a wonderful book. My son had always been a little afraid of Ghosts and monsters. Having him read all the fantastic stories about "Giggles the Ghost" and her many adventures, he isn't afraid of ghosts any more. As a Jewish parent, it was a huge surprise to have a story about Hanukkah, as this was one of his Hanukkah presents. It is extremely well written and I applaud the author for her work. The illustrations are also marvelous. And yes, I too enjoyed this book.
