Though it supposedly covers all the issues related to add(medication, legal etc.) this book simply lacks the substance. Try searching with google.com instead.

WOW - Finally something for the "big kids"

If you're having trouble in college (undergrad or grad) read/buy this book (despite the cost)! Other books on "childhood" & adult AD/HD just repeat the same basic info & don't deal with the specific challenges postsecondary education poses. This is for those already familiar with the basics of AD/HD & are searching for coping mechanisms, ESPECIALLY those struggling in college (Don't feel ashamed. I'm there too.). Some caring professionals in academia questioned the effectiveness of current methods, guidelines, interventions, etc. on AD/HD students. The preface sums up the format/vision: "a compilation of articles written in response to the unique needs of young adults with AD/HD who are attending college .... Recent research on AD/HD supports the need for recognition and treatment for this segment of the postsecondary population. Educational programming for these students must, therefore, now include medical, psychological, and academic interventions to address all aspects of this complex disorder." This wonderful, holistic, approach recognizes the unique problems of AD/HD. For example, a toaster & a toaster oven (students with disorders) may both burn toast (not succeed) but you don't fix them the exact same way. Finally, someone out there understood this! For example, one article discusses the differences between LD & AD/HD, showing different methods must be used. To further this horrible metaphor - these professionals examined all parts of the "toaster oven" (AD/HD students - carrying out several functions w/ the trun of a knob) & tried to figure out how to service, not just the heat element (impulsivity/attention span), but the power cord, knobs, and electrical outlet (psychological, academic, & medical interventions). They recognize how gender, comorbidites (disorders that coexist w/ AD/HD), legal issues, & others can effect students' success in college. This refreshing approach to looking at the whole student & caring about their wellness & success almost made me cry. I'm fed up with "red-tape" & not knowing what's out there and what will TRULLY HELP me finally finish college (I'm working on 6 yrs now). My hope is renewed & my battle attack revised after reading this. I plan to use this book to help dispell the frustrating struggle of fellow ADDers in college, illustrate the need for new stratagemin AD/HD treatment in college and initiate/facilitate change & growth in student disability programs (starting with UC Davis). I felt like a failure, despite "solutions" offered in books, medications, therapy & (insufficient) accomodations. For example, I perfectly understood, retained & explained all the concepts in calculus, but I bombed ALL my exams. Turn the struggle into something productive. READ THIS, learn the deeper effects AD/HD has & help others (by educating them) help you. We can succeed... here are some of the tools....

As an LD teacher, I have found the materials in this book to be an excellant adjunct in the reading/language arts programs for my students. Many special educational plans include word families and the mastering of vowels, r-controlled vowels, and dipthong sounds when needed for decoding. These materials give guided instruction in these areas with varied practice. My only concern is the size of the print in many areas of the book. It is too small for students with visual processing difficulties and I have needed to enlarge some of the pages. Overall, it is a nice addition to my curriculum library.

I am a 20 year-old Dyslexic currently going to school to become a Special Education teacher with am emphasis on Learning Disablilites. I recently had to do a paper and presentation on Dyslexia and came across this book in my college's library. I found this book very interesting and full of helpful information, and the best thing about it was i could understand everything the author was saying. I highly reccomend it to any parent, teacher, or Dyslexic to read.

As a mother of a 10 yr old newly diagnosed dyslexic , I found this book informative and easy to read. I particulary like the sections on visual and auditory dyslexia. So much of it decribes our son.The only part that I found the author over emphasized is the fact that kids are often misdiagnosed.Every chapter had that in it,which is important but in my case we already knew my son has dyslexia.I also thought it could have contained more information on symptoms and various testing information for evaluation of dyslexia.but overall I enjoyed the book very much. Its worth buying. How to delivery high-quality education in any environment

Eleanor Renee Rodriguez and James Bellanca's WHAT IS IT ABOUT ME YOU CAN'T TEACH? AN INSTRUCTIONAL GUIDE FOR THE URBAN EDUCATOR blends classroom expectations and standards with research-based practices to show teachers how to delivery high-quality education in any environment. The focus here is on urban students, developing strategies that help students take responsibility and control of the learning process. Chapters present four basic comprehension strategies and pair these ideas with tactics for success.

Great title that falls short of delivery...

The book is rooted on the cognitive development theories of Feuerstein. The theory is sound. The practical applications of these principles in a 'real' classroom seem daunting. There are sample lesson plans printed in the book (although most of them are geared toward the middle school aged child and not the high school level). The authors do a fine job of reviewing reading scaffolds (ie. word maps, graphic organizers, KWL charts, etc). However, in my opinion, they rely too heavily on cooperative grouping for the lessons that are proposed in the text.

It Would Be Tough If You Had a Dog With ADHD!

Review Date: 2008-10-16
All the pictures are so fun and I'm sure it will reinforce your understanding of ADHD. But what if you kept a dog with ADHD, especially an impulsive one? You might get agitated to find dealing with an ADHD dog demands a lot of patience and hard work. Sometimes you might be exhausted because of his/her daredevil and topsy-turvy behaviors. It would be best if the author explained procrastination which is a typical habit of ADHD and why she decided to show us ADHD dogs.

I don't believe not all dogs have ADHD traits, but all the pictures crack me up and make a lot of sense to me. I know it doesn't apply to docile dogs such as Seeing Eye dogs, though.

Talented People With Real Expertise
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-04
This is a very interesting book that reflects extensive research of the small minority of people with autism who fall into the savant category. People so categorized tend to be highly talented in a specific area, e.g. music but display severely autistic behaviors. Savantism affects less than 10% of people with autism, so its rarity makes for a more interesting study.

This author observed people with savant talents and compared them with neurotypical (NT) counterparts and compares the different results. Some of the people included in this book are gifted linguists; poets; musicians; painters; sculptors and mathematicians. Respect for people with autism is paramount - the very term "splinter skills" is callously dismissive of real talent. The NT population is always afforded the more accurate and gracious terms, "talented;" "gifted" and "expert" which recognize genuine talent and ability. Splinter skill is only applied to the autistic population and its very connotation is that people to whom it is applied lack abilities in all other spheres. Instead of viewing areas of expertise, e.g. artistic gifts as mental "splinters," a more accurate and helpful description would be "gifted aspects of the mind" and "areas of talent."

Due to the stereotyping of the autism/Asperger's (a/A) population that the 1988 movie "Rain Man" has caused, the very term "Rain Man" is considered a slur among many a/A circles. One fictitious character does not represent the a/A population and savantism, although rare, is as varied as there are individuals who have this form of autism.

A very fascinating book indeed.
