A man with an IQ of 49, who had confessed to a murder in Georgia, sat on the witness stand.
"Jerome, did you assasinate President Lincoln?"
"Yes," Jerome said.
"Did you assasinate President Kennedy?"
"Yes," Jerome said.
Incidents like this demonstrate that people with retardation or similar disabilities - whether they are guilty or innocent of the crimes they are accused of committing - often can be shockingly defenseless when caught in America's criminal justice system. Focusing on this tragic dilemma, Unequal Justice? helps readers address the critical question:
Did the system treat this person with disabilities as other citizens are treated whe charged with a crime?
Presenting actual criminal isues and cases involving people with disabilities, Unequal Justice? is a call for compassion in the face of a great, yet often overlooked, American problem. Or, as author Robert
Perske says, "Please see it as my flashlight, turned on for you and beaming its light into a few dark corners of "the system" into which these people have been taken."

A Short, Sweet Tour of Leadership

Aside from politics, not everyone can be passionate about system reform, but author Gary DeCarolis is. In "A View from the Balcony", Gary encourages readers to join him in "an exploration of system change." Though he is talking about mental health services for children with serious emotional disturbance and their families, the principles and practices he is promoting could and should be applied to other populations and settings as well. I immediately saw its relevance to my work in early childhood services.
From the book, it is evident that Gary DeCarolis is sincerely devoted to preparing people to be effective leaders of responsive systems of care. His approach to his work and his writing is personal, practical, and strategic, grown out of extensive experience and conveyed largely through the use of stories. He gets his points across by telling the readers what he intends to say, presenting it with interesting vignettes, then summarizing it, as in any good speech. This makes what could be a dry boring book about system reform instead a surprisingly delightful and instructive read about how to skillfully achieve organizational and community change. I bought 10 copies and gave them to co-workers!

Walking on a Rolling Deck: Life on the Ark is the true-life memoir of author Kathleen C. Berken, of her life-changing choice to work as a live-in assistant in a L'Arche community in Clinton, Iowa, aiding men with developmental disabilities. A deeply spiritual testimony, Walking on a Rolling Deck tells of the inevitable difficulties of adjusting to change, confronting the specter of breast cancer, but most of all, of the benevolent power of God's love - a power all too often ignored, neglected, or obscured in today's world. Ultimately a simple story of Christian life and the resonance of faith, illustrated with a handful of black-and-white photographs, Walking on a Rolling Deck is highly recommended for Christian readers and anyone seeking to quietly contemplate the mystery of God that permeates even the most mundane aspects of daily life.

There has nothing been published like this before. The author definately acheives her purpose in this book and wrote an astounding account that I recommend to all who study or enjoy reading about WWI-WWII.
In The War Come Home Cohen reviews the effects of the high numbers of WWI veterans on the nations of Britain and Germany and the two nations' responses. A focus is on the discontent that grew within Germany's veterans at their Reich's determination and inability to provide for their soldiers and at England's refusal to support veterans, citing it as a matter of charity of which the private sector was responsible. Cohen shows how both nations took completely different determinations on the issue of providing for wounded vets and how this related to propelling the introduction of WWII.
She (the author) uses excellent and extensive research of both primary and secondary sources and in a style more inclined toward that of a political scientist than a historian offers empirical data as evidence. However, she also uses examples to understand the men and their families in a way that makes you sympathize with them but not feel pity for them.
A criticism of this book would be that it is a bit longer than probably necessary. Cohen's examples could have been reduced in number and the book still could have acheived its purpose.

Pastors are often the first to hear about a variety of family issues. Over the years a number of families have shared their concerns over a son or daughter who is struggling in school. And when the problem is the system itself, it's hard to know where to turn for assistance and direction.
Dr. Jenkins offers insight and hope to parents in such circumstances. He explains how the systemn works and doesn't work for kids who are not performing well in school. And he offers families another model for seeking help.
I found the book to be extrememly helpful and encouraging.

A true savior for parents with LD kids

This book was recommended to parents of my special ed. students by our school counselor and every one of them who read it bought their own copy. It not only addresses the guilt that a parent can feel when a child is first diagnosed but explains in layman's terms exactly what the child is going through and feeling as he/she tries to deal with every day school environments and life situations. The companion book for children is more for intermediate elementary and up but can provide a basis for conversation with a younger child. I have given this book as a present to friends with LD children and it is always well received. Dr. Cummings has had personal experience with her own LD son and uses it, along with her experience as a special education college professor, to provide much needed information in a way that is less foreboding than more complicated, text book type self help books.
