This assessment tool was developed by Division TEACCH professionals to use with children functioning at or below the preschool
range and within the chronological age range of 6 months to 7 years. This test provides information on developmental functioning
in the following areas: imitation; fine motor skills; gross motor skills; eye-hand coordination; cognitive performance; and
cognitive verbal skills. It also identifies behavior in the following categories: relating and affect; play and interest in
materials; sensory responses; and language. The test uses a set of toys and learning items (available separately) that are
presented to a child using structured play activities, and the examiner uses test items to observe, evaluate, and score each
child to determine developmental delays and atypical behavior. This assessment tool has recently been replaced by the PEP-3
Kit. This is a newly revised test and kit that now includes all of the toys and materials needed to administer the test, as
well as a caregiver report, which requires parent input before the test is administered. This assessment kit has also been
updated in several other significant ways. For a complete product description, and to obtain the PEP-3 Kit, please visit our

I'm a former public school music teacher and private piano instructor, now teaching at 2 colleges. This semester, for the
first time, I have 2 piano students who are dyslexic, one severely and the other slightly. This book provides a wealth of
helpful information on the scientific background of dyslexia, its potential impacts on musical learning, and strategies for
helping dyslexics be successful in this area. It is well-written, easy to understand, and encouraging. Its suggestions would
be also helpful for music teachers in general. The author's thought-provoking question is, "If they can't learn the way you
teach, can you teach the way they learn?" This book shows the way to do that; I highly recommend it!

For persons with handicaps, the term integration has taken more and more complex meanings over the past decade. Understanding
current integration practices is fundamental to training in special education; actually having the tools to implement integration
is even more important.
This book, the first integration text focusing on teaching strategies, describes pupils, settings, materials, procedures, evaluation, design, and practical techniques for successful integrating individuals with handicaps into school, work, and community settings.
Special features of this valuable text include study questions for each chapter, illustrative case studies, educational models and specific strategies, integration tools for preschool education through vocational training, individual coverage of specific disabilities, exploration of the controversial regular education initiativee (REI) movement, new roles for computers and technology in special education, and a parent's perspective on integration. -- from book's back cover

Burns and Gibbons show how RTI differs from the wait-to-fail IQ-achievement discrepancy model, which could take years for effective identification of significant discrepancies. The authors also emphasize the need for a proactive intervention model, like RTI, and cite federal laws that mandate educational reform and educational accountability.
A few key points in this book are (a) RTI helps reduce the number of students needlessly identified as being learning disabled, which could save school districts money and eliminate needless labeling of children who are not learning disabled, (b) all decisions are data based (objective, not subjective), (c) Tier 1 includes the need to identify a class-wide problem if one exists (e.g., students have been inadequately taught - they are not learning disabled), and (d) each student's progress is monitored by comparison to a group average or pre-established and standardized benchmark. Burns and Gibbons explain how to make this comparison by developing and using an aim line for each student. The aim line begins at the student's baseline functioning level and extends to the student's target functioning level.
This book includes a large number of useful tables and figures to help explain presented concepts. This is a "how-to" book and is logically designed. A time frame for implementing RTI is discussed along with assessments, training and professional development, problem-solving teams, traditional vs. block scheduling within secondary schools, and the problem-solving process.
If you are an elementary school educator (first and foremost) or secondary school educator and you are looking for an excellent guide and reference book, this is a good choice. The hardcover edition that I bought included a companion CD with many, many forms. Although I did not have a need for the forms, I did consider them extremely useful for other educators who might need them. The forms could also serve as a guide for designing one's own forms.
