Amazing Grace!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-11
Let me say first that I am not a member of a Catholic church, being born and raised in protestant congregations. But when it comes to finding ways to include and worship congregants with developmental disabilities, the Catholic Church is way ahead of other denominations. This book is an amazing work of grace for people like my son, who may never understand the sacraments on the same level as those without DD. The authors lead us through a very healing study of why we need to include these souls BECAUSE of--and not simply "in spite of"--their differences. Any member of any congregation who is considering how to include people with cognitive issues would do well (and be blessed) by a reading of this work.

I was a bit concerned about the less than inspired title, and thought it might be too dry and "discertation-like" a read, but found it to be readable, moving, and life-changing. I only hope I can encourage enough others to read it, that it will make a difference in my congregation. It's a shame that this book was written in 1994, and the people of God don't seem to be any further along in learning how to love and include persons with disabilities.

I highly recommend this book. I know it can be hard to come by, and might cost a fair premium, but believe that it is worth every penny.

Difficult issue, but extremely helpful!
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2002-01-13
Outside of the death of a child, the most heart wrenching experience a parent can face is having a disabled child. "Heart wrenching"? Perhaps a word too strong? Yes, Marshak, Seligman and Prezant make this clear in their book. In some cases, the disabled child changes the configuration of the family into something unexpectedly positive. Within this book, we see writing that is refreshing because the authors offer an uncommon perspective on disability and the family.

DISABILITY AND THE FAMILY LIFE CYCLE is the most comprehensive and up-to-date source book I have been able to find and read. In addition to being helpful for professionals who work with families with disabled children, I think that some parents will find the book emotionally rewarding.

This is an excellent piece of thoughtful scholarship. I highly recommend it.

Elizabeth Browne has something to teach anyone involved in church ministry, especially clergy. This book will open the eyes of many to the reality and value that people with disabilities can bring to the parish. Nobody should be hidden and silent, and this book can teach us all the importance of including everyone to whom we minister in God's name.

Awesome and Life Changing
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2003-04-27
I was assigned to read this text for a course. It was one of the most life changing reads of my entire life. I have recommended the book to family and friends and I will continue to do so.

It was a liberating read which caused me to evaluate my own thoughts towards those that are able bodied and those that are not. My concept of what is whole and what is not has also been affected. And although I do not live with a handicap the book gave me insight that I could have never imagined.

Thank you Nancy Eisland for a marvelous work.

Great for discussing differences
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-04
The recommendation is for kids 5 and over, but my 3 year old daughter loves it! She has learned what it means to be blind, deaf or mute, or to have something wrong with your brain, etc. Now she knows that it isn't nice to stare at people with differences, but to just be their friend. It makes these discussions so much easier when you aren't put on the spot, and it teaches them to be caring people. We have read it almost every day for the past two weeks.
