Disabled Books

The book is very helpful to me. They speak so nice about 'special child' who actually is a child who needs 'special care' and 'special understanding'. It is the adults (parents and caretakers) who must change their attitudes towards their kids. It also explains many specific features you may find in your kids and sees deeply into their whole human beings. It also recommends alternative ways to take good and special care for those in need.

Roger Pierangelo and George Giuliani's CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES FOR STUDENTS WITH ADHD provides special education professionals with an excellent concrete set of guidelines for working with ADHD students. From medical and legal requirements in defining and handling ADHD to specific instructional strategies, this is a winner.

I am an educational therapist who works one-on-one with students who have learning disabilities. I have been using this book for over five years as a guide to mediated learning and when helping my students learn labels for cognitive functions. Greenberg's model of cogntive enrichment is based on Feuerstein's theory of mediated learning and is the most practical model that I have seen. My students love learning the labels included in the Building Blocks of Thinking and Tools of Learning. It helps them to apply thinking skills and/or the affective/motivational principles that they need to be effective in any learning experience. These labels transfer easily from a formal instructional setting to home, church, and/or recreational settings. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to make a difference in the lives of children.

With the outrageous increase in the number of children being labeled as "learning disabled" in public schools, this book is a must read for any teacher that truly cares about children learning more than "being creative." Preventing reading difficulties from the beginning is key to getting this country reading again.

I am the publisher and own the publishing rights to The Complete Handbook of Children's Reading Disorders. It is no longer available from Human Sciences Press. My own review is this: "Here is a doctor of medicine and psychiatry (not a teacher) who found an exemplary method of instruction which enabled her, on her own, to teach one thousand of her disturbed and disabled psychiatric student-patients from the New York City school system to read. What other proof should we need that this lady has some remarkable things to tell us? This is why our non-profit literacy agency, with some help from the small foundation Dr. Mosse left, decided to publish these two volumes in affordable paperback to make them available to all who can and should make use of them." Dr. Mosse passed away one day before the original two volumes came off the Human Sciences Press, and so was not able to help in its promotional work. Parents, teachers and other professionals working with the learning disabled now have a "one-stop sourcebook" to fill their needs.
It lists associations, government agencies, and newsletters and magazines on the topic. Entries provide address, telephone number and brief description of services. The index guides the user to services for dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, autism, and other needs.
Also listed are testing centers for diagnosing difficulties. A long list of web sites is included.

There are those who teach ABOUT technology, and then write a text and there are those who DO technology and write about their experiences and insights. Scherer is a doer. This MUST READ book is packed with information and practical strategies, but it adds real-life personal stories to weave together and make sense of the many scattered pieces we know as "special education" today. This book is a real treat. It reads like a novel but leaves you with much wisdom as well as useful ideas and insights.

Balter has written a "parent friendly" book about learning disabilities that ought to be must reading for any family wrestling with the problem.He defines the problem and advises parents in ways that cut through the "Jargon" typically found in so many other books of this type.
