This is a great informational book about williams Syndrome for people that don't have any idea what the genetic defect is like. The only thing that I wish that they would have added into the vast amount of information was to discuss the health problems that are connected with this disorder.

Best book ever about Williams Syndrome!

This book is the "bible" for helping people with Williams Syndrome reach their full potential. Run, don't walk, to get a copy to help the teachers, therapists, and administrators in your WS child's life. This book will help you as a parent to intelligently advocate for your child and explain the quirks, peaks, and valleys that make up these delightful individuals with Williams Syndrome.

A rare book. Powerfull description of a very unusual childood in era of the past from the innocent and fantastic eyes of a child. A window to a different reality, so far and distant from todays society.

The authors/protagonist childood is touchy and painful, but the innocence of the child shines through and was a great lesson for me. A book that will enrich any reader and nourish the mind and soul.

I read this first as an excerpt in New Yorker Magazine. The comfortably upper-middle class family of Ved Mehta was faced with a dilemna; how to educate a blind child in India, where there were really no provisions for a handicapped child. Ved's father made the difficult but brave decision to send him to a blind school, where he'd be surrounded by other children from vastly different backgrounds and religions, a difficult situation in India.

The exciting thing about the book is Mehta's ability to describe, with incredible detail, the feeling, sounds, flavors and smells of his daily life, while portraying his growth and increasing self-reliance. A really touching memoir and one worth reading.

This children's book is very well written and the illustrations are really well done with an incredible likness to the real life adam pictured in the back of the book. Most importantly the lesson in the story is important for children of all ages as well as adults. I highly recommend this book.

Written by Dale Flynn and illustrated by Emilio Soltero, A Very Special Athlete is the story of Adam, a young athlete running in his first big race at the Special Olympics. The challenges that Adam faces and the decisions he makes demonstrate his courage. This colorful picturebook story was inspired by the Special Olympics competitions that now take place in over 150 countries and involve millions of people each year. The author Dale Flynn was also writing from the perspective of being the parent of a son who was a Special Olympian. A Very Special Athlete is an honest portrayal of what it is like to participate in the Special Olympics and recommended for inclusion in both school and community library collections for young readers.

Walking on a Rolling Deck: Life on the Ark

Berken's first book is amazing! I didn't want to put it down! It hits on everything: spirituality, disability, family, community, cancer, humor and simply living life. Life on the Ark is very real and very down to earth.

What makes this book so great is that anyone can read it, and find something to relate to. Anyone who knows someone who has dealt with cancer. Anyone who knows someone with a disability. Anyone who has dealt with divorce, and family, and starting over, and then incorporating the power of spirituality into all of those things.

This book is amazing, and no matter who you are, or where you are on your journey, you will learn something from this book... and no doubt you will laugh and cry.

For anyone seeking to quietly contemplate the mystery of God

Walking on a Rolling Deck: Life on the Ark is the true-life memoir of author Kathleen C. Berken, of her life-changing choice to work as a live-in assistant in a L'Arche community in Clinton, Iowa, aiding men with developmental disabilities. A deeply spiritual testimony, Walking on a Rolling Deck tells of the inevitable difficulties of adjusting to change, confronting the specter of breast cancer, but most of all, of the benevolent power of God's love - a power all too often ignored, neglected, or obscured in today's world. Ultimately a simple story of Christian life and the resonance of faith, illustrated with a handful of black-and-white photographs, Walking on a Rolling Deck is highly recommended for Christian readers and anyone seeking to quietly contemplate the mystery of God that permeates even the most mundane aspects of daily life.

A must-read for parents and siblings of children with disabilities
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-03
As a retired special needs teacher, I worked with many families with children with disabilities and was able to observe how siblings interacted. "What About Me?" hits the nail right on the head. Siegel describes several patterns siblings may fall into, including the 'parentified child,' the 'overachieving child,' the 'acting-out child,' and the 'withdrawn child,' among others. She points out characteristics parents can watch for, and ways to help children in each classification to better cope with the stresses of growing up with a sibling with a disability. Adult siblings will gain insights into their 'growing-up years' from reading this book, too.

Important read for anyone who is a sibling of disabled.

At my local bookstore, this book literally fell off the shelf at my feet and I knelt down and picked it up. I knew instantly that I had to buy it. I cried when I read it because it reminded me of what it was like being a younger sister of a disabled sibling. Although it brought back a lot of memories and misplaced guilt that I have tried to overcome, the book gives good explanations as to some of the outcomes of growing up in this type of family and the dysfunctions that can occur. I would highly recommend this book and thank the authors for their contribution.

I loved this book so much. I thought it was so wonderful that it was inclusive of women from many different cultural backgrounds and with many different disabilities. I was especially appreciative that they included mental illness in this book "Agorophobia:letting go," by Pam Mason, because so many times it is brushed off and blamed on the victim. I would highly recommend this book to any woman who knows what its like to go through lifes ups and downs.

If you are a woman with a disability, know a woman with a disability, or care about women with disabilities, this is a must read. Out of all of the anthologies written by women, this is the most accessible. If you are looking for a gift for someone you love, don't pass it up.

I had the good fortune of reading this book when it was first published and still consider it one of the best children's books ever on understanding disabilities and the people who have them.
This is a picture book, a children's book and a guidebook for parents, all in one. The story focuses on the building of a friendship between two young boys, one with and one without a disability. I actually purchased several copies of "About Handicaps" and shared them with friends and neighbors. Later, when I became a Disability Awareness Specialist, I used this book in an awareness program for third graders to help them become more understanding of their classmates who had a disability. This is a book that will educate your head and touch your heart. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

AccessAbility: A Manual For Churches is a step-by-step guidebook for congregations wanting to make their building architecturally accessible. The authors also believe that architectural accessibility is only the first step. The book includes many tips for incorporating people with disabilities into the life of the congregation. There are essays from people with disabilities describing their experiences. The book concludes with a large section of helpful resources and each chapter has resources specific to the given topic. The project was funded by the Episcopal Church. One of the authors is an Episcopal deacon and the other is a Catholic who directs disability ministry in her archdiocese. The book is applicable to any congregation wishing to be inclusive. Highly Recommended.

I have worked with all levels of Achieve: A Visual Memory Program for many years during its research stages. I have been impressed with the gains made by students (both gifted and challenged) from the age of five to adulthood. After the words have been used for the purpose of visual memory, I found that they were excellent choices to expand reading, spelling and vocabulary skills. I could quickly and easily discuss prefixes, suffixes and roots of words with my students. This series Levels I-VI helped round out our program of learning skill instruction. I believe that anyone who uses it will appreciate the advances made by the students.
