4.5 Klovers! Courtesy of CK2S Kwips & KritiquesReview Date: 2007-04-23
Case in point: the arrest of high school student Derrick Booker for the murder of his girlfriend. Knighthorse's gut tells him the young man is innocent, and the series of threats against the private dick that ensue as soon as he accepts the case do more than confirm what his gut tells him - they make him more determined than ever to uncover the real villain.
Unfinished Business is the first in Jon Hargrove's Jim Knighthorse series, and my first read by this author. I can tell you unequivocally I am looking forward to the next in this fun series! Hargrove infuses Jim Knighthorse with a dry wit, and readers are entertained by quips worthy of any popular TV private detective through his dialogue with other characters and by experiencing the hero's every thought, a benefit of the story being written in first person. Indeed, it is hard to imagine the story being written in a different format, as the first person view affords us an interesting insight to the male psyche while enjoying Knighthorse's random musings concerning just about everything.
I called this a fun series, and I laughed quite a bit, but the book and the main character have their dark side as well. Jim is a bit of an anti-hero at times, and goes to great lengths to protect those who are unable to defend themselves, sometimes using some very unconventional methods to achieve his goals.
What would a good mystery be without some interesting twists? Unfinished Business definitely has several of those! I have read a great many mystery novels ever since I was a kid, bred on Agatha Christie novels. My mind is pretty good at solving puzzles of all kinds, and I am always impressed with a story that manages to surprise me. I came fairly close to figuring out the plot twists, but Hargrove still managed to pull a couple of surprises over on me - much to my delight!
The author is working on a sequel to this story, and I will definitely be watching for its release!

At last, Danny Gatton's story is told!Review Date: 2007-06-02
As I was one that always wondered what would cause a "normal" guy like Danny to take his life, on the heels of Roy Buchanan taking his own life, the book provided much insight into those dark days. It also provided insight into his glory days, his love of classic cars, and his struggles with the music industry.
The book was so captivating that I took it everywhere with me. I doing so, many folks inquired about it ... and more people in my town knew of Danny than I ever imagined. One friend was so impressed with my overview of the book, he requested to read it when I finished with it. Because I want to keep my signed copy intact, I'm buying him a copy as a gift.
If you have any interest in Danny Gatton or any interest in an amazing American guitar hero, "Unfinished Business" is his story.

The Real StoryReview Date: 2006-06-22
This book balances the abrupt, tragic end of Danny's life with the highs and motivations that made Gatton a player's player. It also spotlights many of the people (like Arlen Roth) that contributed their loyalty and friendship to Danny. Thank you Ralph for a great homage and superb, thorough account of the life of the Master of the Telecaster. A "must read" for all guitarists - and anyone else who enjoys a moving account of an accomplished human being.

The 100-mile Walk: A Father And Son on a Quest to Find the Essence of LeadershipReview Date: 2007-07-16
This book illustrates that the definitions of leadership and business success are changing. Once men spend much of their lives isolated from their families so that they could provide a financially comfortable living. Today, many individuals sacrifice that security to spend time with their family and friends. The 100-Mile Walk shows that there is value in both career paths and that individuals following either path can learn from the other.

Awesome Book!Review Date: 2001-12-21
Mr. Bedell's book came highly recommended and not only did it live up to its praise, it far surpassed it!
As a student of positive persuasion, I've read numerous books on this subject; many of which are excellent. This book is the best (along with Carnegie's "How To Win Friends . . . ") as, not only is the information top-notch; the author's instruction is simple-to-apply, and immediately applicable. His stories, used as examples from which we all can learn and benefit, are interesting, compelling, and I know it allowed me to see myself utilizing these wonderful win/win methods in my own life. Parents will especially love his advice regarding persuading children in a way that will benefit everyone involved. In fact, although there are lots of helpful business examples throughout the book, if you are a parent or plan to be one, you'll want to own this book for that reason alone.
This is one of those books that you'll most likely want to buy as gifts for loved ones and anyone else you wish to be successful in their lives.

AN OUTSTANDING AND SUBSTANTIVE BOOK!Review Date: 2007-02-12
The authors delve into each of these three dimensions (tactics, deal design, and setup) in great depth, providing a powerful analytical framework, cases, and numerous guidelines and creative insights. This is a an outstanding and substantive book!
An excellent overviewReview Date: 2007-01-20
A strategic approach to negotiationsReview Date: 2007-03-26
This new third dimension includes, among other things, "acting to ensure the right parties have been involved, in the right sequence, to deal with the right issues that engage the right set of interests, at the right tables, at the right time, under the right expectations, and facing the right consequences of walking away if there is no deal."
Here is real-world example of acting to ensure the right parties and the right sequence: A US firm was looking to establish a joint venture in Mexico and had identified three potential partners (one excellent, one good, and one that barely meets the set criteria). Should this firm start negotiations with the best prospect, and if those negotiations fail, then move to the next, and so on? Or wouldn't it be far better if this US firm makes it known in the industry (in Mexico) that they are looking for a joint venture partner, and induce these three prospects to come to the US firm? Negotiating simultaneously with the three potential partners was indeed better, especially that the US firm set up the negotiation conditions whereby the three Mexican prospects were rushing to compete for the joint venture!
Although this book introduces a third dimension to negotiation, the other two dimensions are also well covered by the authors, with a large number of real-world examples. The second dimension covers designing value-creating deals, including the traditional concept of enlarging the pie, and how to make lasting deals. The first dimension focuses on the tactics at the negotiation table, including problem-solving tactics such as shaping perceptions, setting ambitious target prices, interpersonal skills, cultural empathy, and many other tactics familiar to those who have read traditional negotiation books.
In short, 3-D Negotiation is a welcomed addition to the topic of negotiation, especially due to its strategic approach to negotiations. I particularly like the idea of backward mapping the negotiation process, starting with the desired target or outcome, then mapping all the parties, their interests, no-deal options. I was also intrigued by the authors' philosophy and the 3-D strategy of: "Let them have your way", as well as their concept of "Zone of Possible Agreement".
Although this excellent book is written with important and complex deals in mind, the 3-D approach can be indeed applied to simpler deals and negotiations. In fact, the reader will find a large number of examples of negotiations ranging from the simple ones such as buying a car or a house, to the more complex ones such as negotiations between countries, or among large international organizations.

The Age CurveReview Date: 2008-10-11
First, the author identifies the generations (GI, Silent, Boomer, Gen X & Y). Then, compares and contrasts them - not strictly by numbers and percentages but more importantly, by attitudes and behaviors. His personal, often humorous examples make the facts, figures and preferences of each market group easy to remember.
The Age Curve is fun reading and has something to offer everyone. We've purchased several copies for family and friends - a great gift for thinking people!
The best investment you will ever make!Review Date: 2008-10-10
My only criticism, is it is only 268 pages long! My solution was to re-read it and go to Ken's very informative web site! This book is worth its weight in gold, as it will wean you off those Aging Boomers onto a bigger coming wave: Generation Y. And finally this book is a must for Christmas lists!
Great Book - Pass This By At Your Own Expense!Review Date: 2008-10-02
The most important business book I've encountered in at least the past five years, The Age Curve's every page contains useful information about the who, what, when, where, why and HOW of our current marketplace and provides an eye-opening vision of the near and not so near future of our fragile global economy.
Generational shifts are about to change business... all business... and those who are most familiar with Kenneth Gronbach's work are going to be the ones best prepared to handle the struggles and profit from the opportunities of those shifts. If you enjoyed Blink or Freakonomics here is your chance to read a book that shares a similarly interesting style and tone, but with the invaluable bonus of having the information within be applicable to everyday business - which is something I found sorely lacking in the case of these other best sellers.
The bottom line? Get this book. Today. You'll be finished and better prepared for a profitable future tomorrow.

An Ideal Environmental Studies TextReview Date: 2008-08-06
The authors provide comprehensive discussions of the more significant environmental impacts of each of these activities; general scientific background for understanding the nature and interrelations of these impacts; and historical/political insights for understanding how these adverse environmental situations have developed through time. Each discussion attempts to provide an even-handed treatment of these complex and often controversial issues. Moreover, the book is very well documented. It includes a 23-page glossary of terms, a 25-page index, 45 pages of factual appendices, and 150 pages of clearly referenced footnotes.
In summary, The American West at Risk is an excellent guide and text for the serious study of environmental issues in the western United States.

Cocky, conceded, and very sure of himself, Private Investigator, Jim Knighthorse dreams of playing professional football in the NFL. His dreams were shattered when his leg got busted up in a game. It was then that he decided to apprentice under his father, Cooper Knighthorse and become a Private Investigator.
Jim began delving for information to clear Derrick Booker of the murder accusations after he was shot and threatened to remove himself from the case. That alone proved Derrick was not the killer. Along with trying to find Amanda's true murderer, Jim's father gives him pictures that may help find the person responsible for his own mother's murder as well.
Jim seemed to always have the upper hand. Who knew in the end that the person guilty gave him most of the information to bring the killer down? The NFL is still an option for Jim, but is his girlfriend and career enough to keep him happy; or must he still chase that boyhood dream?
Mr. Hargrove is a talented writer of Suspense and Mystery. I honestly could not put this novel down; I stayed up well into the night just to discover a very shocking ending. The only fault I could find was, the story is told in first person but it takes four chapters to find out the name of the story teller.I think the main characters name is a must for the beginning of a book.
Unfinished Business is full of mystery, lies and twists around each corner. This novel was exciting as well as thrilling; a must for mystery lovers. This book contains adult language but if not for that it would be a great series for young adults. I look forward to reading more novels in the Jim Knighthorse mystery collection. 4 hearts.
