What the Right Ignores About the Corporations Running America

I purchased this book back when it first was published, and have recommended it to many people who used to consider themselves to be rightwing conservatives. This book helped convince them that the right was wrong, and supported stealing with both hands, whether it is Corporate Welfare that ADM has taken for buying influence, or altering trade barriers to block out legitimate competitors, or simple illegal price fixing on a global scale, the ADM Corp led the way. Now that ethanol has offerred up a new way to steal from the public trough, ADM is again leading the way with the biggest 'snout' in the Government Trough.

Let The Truth Be Known To All

Jim Liebert gets to the truth. Dwayne Andreas and others at ADM are not kind folks. Their ties with murderer/dictator Fidel Castro are real. Their contemptuous involvement with the illegal extraction of Elian Gonzalez from freedom and his subsequent delivery to slavery in Castro's communist prison is also very real. All in the name of appeasment to Castro. These people are stench and deserve to be imprisoned, if not worse. Thank you Mr. Liebert for telling the truth.

ADM, ... enterprise, punishes whistleblower

Review Date: 2002-02-20
Attorney Lieber deserves high praise for his objective, informative presentation of the antitrust criminal case vs. Archer Daniels Midland, the agribusiness giant, that ADM, its powerful lawyers and Clinton's Justice Department did not want published. To his credit, he continued to pursue this case after most reporters backed off and swallowed the dizzying spin and disinformation that ADM's CEO Dwayne Andreas and his aggressive lawyers gave the media, crying crocodile tears as the "victim" of an allegedly deranged ADM executive, Mark Whitacre, who became the FBI's mole, and made hundreds of tapes incriminating ADM executives fixing prices in world markets with their competitors. Lieber correctly smelled the stench of a cover-up and adroitly guides readers to make their own
conclusions after compiling evidence, omissions from court records, and other factors that allow readers to infer that the judicial process was compromised by ADM's widespread political
influence before the trial even began. Although Dwayne Andreas,
the infamous political fixer and king of corporate welfare, got immunity in a highly secretive plea bargain to Justice in 1996,
after ADM agreed to pay a record fine of $100 million, his son
Michael was convicted and imprisoned with Terry Wilson for a
mere 3 years, and Dwayne (thanks to outraged and courageous ADM
shareholders) finally resigned. Tragically, Whitacre was
convicted, fined and sentenced to a harsh term of 9 years
because of ADM's swift retaliation against him as whistleblower, for exposing to the FBI the ... corporate culture of
ADM...(anything goes-but don't get caught-and here's your big
bonus (not reported on books)to keep silent, the unspoken words
being that an employee would be fired and crucified if they
blew the whistle.
Lieber's chilling comment (p. 322)should concern every citizen
or future whistleblower who believes in due process and our rule of law: "It was expected that ADM's attorneys would savage the
snitch. What was highly bizarre in the world of criminal law was the way the Justice Department joined in the frenzy to destroy Whitacre. This was an aberration...the perpetrator was a
politically wired corporation whose law firm- the president's law firm- had unbridled entree and influence at Justice. The
mole's lawyer had none."
Lieber makes a strong case that this American corporate history- "one of the most important antitrust cases of the century"- should be closely examined. Rightly so. Why was the court record sealed, why were key witnesses (e.g., Wayne Brasser) not deposed, who could have validated Whitacre's claims that the hidden bonuses were a quid pro quo for engaging in illegal price-fixing? The author's appendices are very helpful. ADM and Dwayne Andreas not only have lobbied for years to emasculate our antitrust laws (the "Magna Carta" of free enterprise) but know that the massive soft money donations to key politicians can grease not only the wheels of justice, but also ensure that ADM continues to get huge subsidies for ethanol and other favors from Agriculture Dept. (high fructose corn syrup, peanuts) that have cost taxpayers billions of dollars.
Rats in the Grain is highly recommended, and was a difficult book to write because of the case's complexity. James Lieber should be considered for a Pulitzer Prize.

I have not read this book, but it seems that the publisher's statement here at Amazon should include some mention of what this book can tell us that Kurt Eichenwald's exhaustive, prizewinning book, _The Informant_, does not. Eichenwald's book covers exactly the same material, and Eichenwald (the _New York Times_ reporter who covered the case) had the same access to Whitacre and other sources that Lieber had.

For obvious reasons, I would prefer not to give a "number-of-stars" rating to a book I haven't read. But Amazon demands it, so I've chosen a neutral "three."

Well done with an important "Afterword"

Lieber possesses a unique blend of talents to investigate the price fixing trial of the century.

The book chronicles ADM kingmaker Dwayne Andreas's rise to business and political power, charts the evolution of US antitrust law, and dissect's the testimony of key witnesses in the trial.

The chapters on the trial delve into ADM's chief defense: its executives were white-hatted American heroes intent on destroying an "Asian" cartel. You will find the race baiting and "we-are-heroes" defense surreal, especially since audio and video tape caught the conspirators red-handed and potty-mouthed.

Lieber presents shocking evidence to build a solid case that the US Justice Department often subjugated itself to ADM's political power and well-connected attorneys in the prosecution of informant Mark Whitacre for fraud and tax evasion. For example, Whitacre still maintains the nearly $10 million of ADM money he stashed in Switzerland and the Cayman Islands was "off-the-books" bonuses given to him by Michael Andreas with the approval of ADM president James Randall. Lieber provides multi-layered facts that endorse Whitacre's story.

The book's final chapters contain even more revelations: alleged document shredding by ADM chairman Andreas after the June 1995 FBI raid; ADM's hiring prostitutes to help steal competitors' technology; the never investigated role of ADM president James Randall--or Chairman Andreas--in price fixing conspiracies; the Justice Department's refusal to release public documents, and other sordid facts of sex, lies and videotape.

As you will discover in reading this book, justice was plea bargined away and the wishes of the Andreas crime family boss Dwayne were granted, one of which was sending Whitacre to jail for 10 years.

Lieber is to be commended for this historical document which will explain to generations to come how corporate crime destoyed our country.

I'm really surprised at all the positive reviews this got. She did give some guidelines which are nice, but I found it very hard to drum up much sympathy for the author, who seemed very full of herself and self-focussed. Her life was, in general, not a struggle; she seemed to get everything she wanted easily and more than most people can dream of getting. She had a few bumps and now she's back on track and that's why she wrote the book. I would not recommend it.

After reading the article about Ms. Whaley in the April 2006 issue of Black Enterprise Magazine, I immediately bought and read her book. I could not put the book down. Whaley tells a story that most of us can identify with. I was so inspired by her book. She difinitely sparked me to re-evaluate my own choices and start living my life for me and not everyone else. I recommend this book to everyone.

As part of our mantra at Rocket Builders to bring metrics into sales and marketing I was asked to review this book. A very valuable book for those in the enterprise sales market and/or markets where the customer needs material that really shows the ROI from using your goods and services. This includes customers who have become "jaded" by implementations that took longer and cost more than budgetted with little to show for it. They will love the part where you can show them the cost of waiting/not deciding. (So will you)

Not a book for the faint of heart as it is quite thorough and all encompassing wrto getting and using metrics in sales. It is definitely written with VP sales and CFO in mind. The very last chapter discusses ROI used in marketing and despite the brevity, it is a useful chapter. If I was to point to one flaw, it is that this book, like so many others in sales , does not address how and why most marketing materials do not really help the sales process. The problem is as much due to sales as marketing. But that is the subject for another day(s)?

Chapters are quick, short and perhaps a bit too concise in explanation. It takes a while to get through and I would not recommend it as an airplane book. You need quiet, time and reflection to use this. If you do, the results should be very useful to you

Having been a sales mentor for 7 years, and having sold large solutions into the Enterprise for 23, this book has been exactly what I have been looking for. The need to quantify value in an easy, neutral fashion, and have your prospect do it with you, is exactly how the deals are being done today in this overheated, competitive technology market.

I have adapted my practice to ROI selling, brought it to my clients, and have found new clients because of it. One of the best elements of the book is the ability to engage with the author, and actually get his help. In several instances, I did this, and it was very competitive and highly professional.

I recommend this to vendors selling software and technology, CEO's who have to buy those solutions, and executives who need to sell there projects to their own C-level. With tools like ROI Selling, you can more easily advance your business and career. Great work!

ROI Selling: I recommend for any individual working on or thinking about implementing value justification/ROI documentation into the sales process. As more and more sales situations increase in complexity the greater the need for a valid credible documentation of ROI will be needed. Customers do not have a sohpisticated method of valuing a solution, those sales professionals that can provide a credible model will win more than lose.

The methodology is great. The process the book uses is very nice to follow and not only is helpful on a general level but is providing actionable results.

My only wish is to have more examples from real life that could be packaged on a cd-rom. However the handful that are provided are a great starting point from which to build.

Even if you think you have a good ROI model you should get this book to validate your model.

I wasn't really into the "green revolution" a few weeks ago. I'm an officer in the Navy and for the past 8 years I haven't exactly been surrounded by liberal-thinking environmentalists.

I read this book because I'm a believer in Tim Sanders, and he has made a believer out of me.

This isn't just a book for environmentalists to rally around, it's absolutely essential for anyone who wants to thrive in today's market and become a part of the "responsibility revolution". In a nutshell, this book will tell you how to identify the causes of wastefulness at work and inspire you to change them.

In 5 years you may not have to read this book because there will be hundreds of others touching on the same subject. What Tim has captured is truly forward-thinking, and time will prove that we can't ignore what he's saying.

Buy a copy, get inspired, then go out and make a difference.

You can't afford to ignore the responsibility revolution

I loved Tim's first two books, Love is the Killer App and The Likeability Factor. These books discussed how we can impact the people around us for the better. I also have had the pleasure of seeing Tim speak, and hired him to keynote for the professional society I direct. I have been eagerly awaiting this new book because Tim's message is always clear, powerful and captivating.

Saving the World at Work further captures the energy and commitment of Tim Sanders, and his quest to make our world a better place. Many of us want to take steps to save this world, but have only taken baby steps to do so. Tim helps us understand how to become fully committed to saving the world, explaining how dramatically we can affect it by changing the way we do business.

This is not just another book about how to go green, but rather a tale of how we can have healthier bottom lines and more successful businesses by taking care of the environment, employees and the surrounding community.

Tim will change the way you think about saving the planet and help you understand how you can indeed make a difference as an individual.

Prophet of Postmodern Corporate Values

Review Date: 2008-11-03
Every age has its prophets who observe the movement of social, political and economic forces then project what the future might hold. Tim Sanders' new book, Saving the World at Work, represents the projections of a knowledgeable and thoughtful prognosticator. Sanders has observed the effect of recent events on the psyche of individuals. Events such as September 11, CEO scandals, and the environmental crisis are traumas that have shocked most individuals into re-examining the values they once embraced. Although the recent financial and economic shocks came post-publication, they bolster Sanders' case.

In his book, Sanders identifies this change -- this new set of values being adopted -- as a social responsibility revolution. He sees the social responsibility revolution as people caring for more than profit alone. They care for employees, the community and the environment.

He also describes how he sees the social responsibility revolution evolving. The true believers, or "Saver Soldiers" as Sanders calls them, are the change agents of this move to look beyond the bottom line. He articulates how you can become a Saver Soldier through assessing your realm of influence and then executing the long list of recommended actions that he lays out near the end of the book.

I highly recommend reading this book. We live in a period of dramatic upheaval. The mindset and values of Modernity are giving way to a Postmodern perspective. "Saving the World at Work" helps clarify what many people feel. It also describes a likely scenario for the future that everyone will benefit from knowing about and helping bring to fruition.

Urgent. Urgency. There's an underlying question that drives Saving the World at Work by Tim Sanders: "If not now, when?" The human race is destroying its' habitat at a break-neck pace even though the technology and know-how exist to ameliorate the damage. Sanders describes how one individual can influence a corporation or a community to take on the challenge of The Responsibility Revolution then nails the punch line in his last chapter: "If Not You, Then Who?" Read this book. Do it now.

Tim Sanders is a very conversational writer. I have read his previous book, Love is the Killer App. Tim does a wonderful job of asking people to examine their inner strengths and personalities and then he provides suggestions to make us better people. In his new book, Tim discusses the "green" movement, which is at the forefront of corporate and personal agendas. If you are not thinking about this, then you should because it will be your competitive advantage. Tim has made me think about how I could do more at home and in the workplace. I recommend this book and Tim's other books as well.

Looked forward to this book and followed the progress from Kevin's initial invitation to his subscribers.
I am quite disappointed. Except for Gary May's initial chapters, the rest are really bah humbug.
It looks like, and reads like, a self-published book. Full of typos (and not talking about American vs English) and poor design & layout.
The marketing efforts (with all the free stuff on offer)were, by and large, quite disappointing.
It seems to me a cynical exercise in extracting money from people rather than adding value - which is the Kevin Hogan brand.
Having said that Gary's chapters are worth the few buck for sure, and I have added him to my blogroll.

Finally! Selling applications for all industries.

This book guides selling from the inside out. As a colleague familiar with Mollie Marti's work as a success and business coach, I was able to read a preview copy of this book. Mollie is an excellent writer and presents complex information in a clear way. She also is known for going above and beyond in her work. She's now done this with a stellar team of sales experts.

This book presents multiple layers to selling and certainly merits reading more than once. There are so many principles, tips, examples and new ideas. Some of the ideas can be implemented immediately; some take thought and reflection. I have read the whole book and am beginning to reread parts of it. It's going to take me several times through this book to truly absorb it all and implement it in my trial consulting practice. There are so many practical suggestions.

I am pleased to find a book that provides suggestions applicable to selling services and knowledge as well as hard goods. The principles presented here will improve any type of selling, not just someone selling a tangible product. This is one of those books that I will be constantly taking off my shelf as I attempt to master the area of sales and business growth.

I can not recommend this book highly enough. Absorb the material, apply the lessons - and succeed. No matter what business you are in or what product or service you provide, you will be wowed by this resource. It is overflowing with good ideas that really make a difference in your business. If you implement even a fraction of the information it contains, you undoubtedly will see the results on your bottom line.

Congratulations to Mollie Marti and her colleagues on putting together this excellent sales resource. And congrats to any reader smart enough to buy it and put this powerful advice to work for them!

As a speaker that sells from the stage, I soaked up every word of Dave Lakhani's section on selling the crowd. I could go on and on; Hogan, Marti, Lakhani, May, Hoppe, and Adams- I tip my hat to you all. A big thanks to Kevin Hogan for harnessing the power of all of these creative persuaders in one book!

I was going to give this book four stars, but I was going to be unfair with it. This is not a guide to create a lean enterprise, it was not meant to be one and I was going to judge it as if it was.

This is a great introduction to the Toyota Production System and lean philosophy, by nobody else but the architect of the system.

It had been a long time since I read such a dense book about any subject. If you are interested in getting started in the Lean methodologies then this book is a must read. If you work in a manufacturing plant or are in management then the insight on this book will be valuable for the rest of your life. I recommend it to my boss along with the Toyota Way because I think we need to start implementing all the techniques and management principles, specially when it comes to Human Resource management and policies, that made the Toyota the world leader it is.

A "must read" for anyone in manufacturing. It is the basis for all modern manufacturing, and for any business process or flow. The author describes the two pillars of the Toyota production system as autonomation and just-in-time. He explaines the six rules associated with the kanban. He also describes the seven wastes and the value of asking "Why" five times. The book is very easy and quick reading, and provides a complete backgroung to the Toyota development and success.

Review Date: 2007-11-04
"Toyota Production System" was published in 1979 in Japanese and, in English in 1988. It is the source material on the toyota production system and, in my view, it is often good to go back to the source. Sadly, I found this book disappointing. The writing style is clunky (perhaps a poor translation) and the book lacks structure; being more of a semi-random collection of points than a development of ideas. Nevertheless there is some interesting stuff in here. The honesty that this is a long slow process (taking Toyota 30+ years) is refreshing, and I hadn't realised that Mr Ohno ranked kanban (with quick changeovers) as the core of the system and essential to success. Often in lean kanban seems to be a bit of a side issue: here it is vital. Also there is an interesting analysis of some of Henry Ford's early writings compared to TPS. This would be good material for a student essay. However, for the philosophy of TPS you will get much more out of "The Toyota Way" or "The Toyota Way Fieldbook"; and for the tools of lean go to "Lean Production Simplified" or the many other books in this area. Overall this book is a bit of a let-down I am sad to say.

I cannot believe how thorough this dictionary is--literally all the street jargon is in here. For this price, you're doing yourself an incredible disservice by ignoring it. We all forget the lingo sometimes; the Wall Street dictionary immunitizes us against forgetting trader talk.

I love this glossary

There isn't a more comprehensive dictionary like this. I've never been disappointed with any of the terms, and there's never a case where I've sought a term in this book and it wasn't there. I highly recommend this book.

I got this book on the personal recommendation of the author and what can I say that hasn't already been said by other reviewers! David Levy has written an exemplary guide to the world of animation. Not only does he offer his own experiences, he also draws on veterans from all over the industry for their advice. The result is a very refined and concise guide to not only the industry, but also animating in general. Every sentence has been written with a purpose, so the book is best enjoyed over several days or weeks.

There is no need for me to analyse this book further. If you have even a slight interest in animation either as a career or out of curiosity, go and buy a copy for yourself, you will not be disappointed.

is necesary in an animator's bookshelf.

A fantastic book that gives you concrete areas on which to take action. Both practical and inspirational, this book will help you combat creative inertia. Just buy it...it's way more helpful than a few lattes or a movie ticket plus popcorn...

Well worth the purchase

This is a definite keeper. The insights and insider tips, the personal stories and motivational powers of this little book are not to be underestimated. I'm about halfway through and just finished the chapter on "independent animation projects". It's like being reborn, knowing that others have gone through the dark tunnel and sweated their way through personal projects using every spare second they have.

I would recommend this book to anyone needing a motivational boost or info on how to succeed in the animation industry. It's insightful and personal, the latter point being where most of its educational value perspires; especially when giving interview tips, how to play it safe in the workplace, not burning bridges, personalities, choosing which battles to fight and which to lose..

I haven't read anything about samurai jack yet... which im kind of hoping is in the book. still... half of the book to go, so who knows.

thumbs up

I both enjoyed and learned a great deal from reading Carmine Gallo's 10 Simple Secrets Of The World's Greatest Business Communicators.
Carmine's words and sentences are "turbo-charged" with right-on-target examples and no-nonsense information from page 1 through page 226. I strongly recommend this book to my family members, friends, colleagues ... and, yes, even to my "enemies." After all ... who wants to sit through another presentation that's more "sedative" than "seductive.!!

Gallo does a great job of distilling the important characteristics of successful presenters into simple, practical, easy-to-emulate bits of advice. I have found the book's format particularly convenient. I can easily pick the book up, open to any page, and start learning. No need to read it from start to finish if that's not your style. Gallo shows considerable insight into what makes for success. Buy it!

Tom, Thanks for your insight. Yours is not merely a book about Leadership (which by the way is brilliant and thought provoking), it is a book about life. I was thinking that if I was to live some of the learnings (and reminders) from your book, then I would lead a much fuller life and impact my surroundings positively.

I have long been a supporter of the inverted pyramid, and you have given it new meaning to me especially from the point of view of management layers and Leaders being empowerd by their people. It is as challenging as it is powerful and I believe GREAT Leaders already do (instincively) or will adopt your credo on this. How Powerful.

I shall keep your book handy as my reminder whenever I feel I am letting myself (and as a result others) down, and ensure that "who I am is what I bring to each situation in life".

A heart-felt thank you.

An MBA Must Read

I am an adjunct professor with the MBA program at Maastricht School of Management in Maastricht, Holland. My primary teaching responsibilities include courses for MBA and DBA students focused on Executive Leadership, Advanced Business Strategy, Strategic Alliances, Mergers and Acquisitions and International Business. These students are located on the main campuses and 36 auxiliary campuses around the world.

I have used the book, The Accidental CEO - A Leader's Journey from Ego to Purpose, as one of the primary resources for my students to get inside the head of what it feels like to be a CEO and to confront the real leadership issues that CEOs have to resolve in their everyday work life. Both the students and I have found Mr. Voccola's book to be an invaluable source of stimulating class discussion. It offers the students a realistic portrayal of the daily dynamic of corporate leadership. It maps out what it means to gain the loyalty of your core leadership team through the means of an inner conversation about who you are as a CEO. It links the performance of the CEO to his understanding of himself and ultimately how important it is for the CEO to get clear about his or her real purpose and unique contribution.

Mr. Voccola's book is the perfect segue into the discussion of self knowledge as the key to leadership performance breakthroughs. After reading this book, the students quit speaking in the abstract and begin to really grasp the concrete realities of the leadership journey. It has sparked numerous highly motivated classroom discussions and has caused several of my students to focus on various aspects of successful leadership as their research topic for their MBA theses. I highly recommend this book without reservation for any reader who wants to gain deep insight to the real dynamics of leadership and personal success both in business and in life.

In my opinion most books on leadership miss the boat in that they deal with tired rhetoric and useless theory. However, Thomas's book is different as it hits on the core of leadership, which is authenticity. In my book Leadership Matters...The CEO Survival Manual: WHAT IT TAKES TO REACH THE C-SUITE AND STAY THERE I also discuss leadership from a values based approach. I stress the fact that true success comes through service and by attaining a level of significance. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand what is truly valuable from a leader's perspective.

How to Engage an Organization through Engaging Oneself

This book uses a story format to describe a process for deepening leaders' self-awareness and to provide a framework for "creating a game worth playing." The book is well-organized, engaging, and the content is extremely valuable. By following the framework, leaders can develop clarity around their personal vision and then translate it to their organization's purpose. The second section of the book focuses on formulating a strategy to engage employees in the organization's vision and purpose. Voccola provides points to consider at the end of each chapter.

As a leader of a large division of 800 people, I found the book practical and effective in providing me tools to lead my organization to success. I've always had the belief that growing into leadership is an "inside job" but have not found many books to help me expand my self-awareness as it relates to being a leader. It was easy for me to translate the story to my own situation and then apply the framework with my leadership team. I highly recommend this book to anyone who either accidentally or intentionally finds themselves in a leader role.
