I watched his show JKX for a few seasons and my wife and I found the show to be VERY funny. The best bits are the folks who apply for the paper delivery job and the skit with the driving instructor. In my opinion the all time best was when he had the mexican day laborers over for his birthday party.
Anyway, this book shows the struggles and nonsense that he went through before getting on TV. It is well written and doesn't really gloss over the nonsense he had to put up with. And there is a message in here but you'll have to read the book

A fun book.

I really enjoyed reading about Jamie Kennedy trying to make it in Hollywood, it was years of humiliating jobs, and lots of money down the drain on get famous quick scams, but he clawed his way to the middle, and planted his flag.

I have to admit, I wonder how truthful some of his stories really are, but I'm sure he told it as he really remembered it. I really admire him for having a dream, and making it happen.

He also spins some funny stories about his encounters with celebrities, my favorite was when he was working at Red Lobster, and Arsenio Hall came in, at first he didn't recognize him, and told him there were no tables available, and then recognized him, and got really excited, and then Arsenio asked if he had a table for him now, and Jamie said, "no". Funny stuff, definately worth a read.

A must read!

Jamie Kennedy's show is what I know him best by. I'm so glad he wrote this book and gave us a little inside of his life. He's such an honest, and open book. What a fascinating character he is, in everything he does. I actually tend to look up to him and base my actions on him and others like him, never being afraid to show my inner self (read my profile here at Amazon if you don't believe me). Life is too short, and if you don't reach out and take Life, it won't be taken. That seems to be his "take on life."

I highly recommend this book and this lifestyle. It will truly rock your world!

This is a superb introduction to ancient warfare and can serve as a springboard for further studies in ancient history. The artwork depicting the uniforms of various armies of that time is well done and the narratives, diagrams of battles are really helpful and informative.

As I researched the equipment and modes of Greek warfare while writing the historical novel "Maccabee," I consulted numerous excellent sources, but John Warry's book was without a doubt the best. It became my virtual bible for the staging of the battle sequences between the Jews in the Maccabean Revolt and their Syrian enemies who employed the Greek methods that had worked so well for Alexander the Great. Warry's explanations of military techniques in their historical context as well as the wealth of illustrations makes this a valuable resource for anyone interested in ancient warfare.

This is an excellent introduction to ancient warfare. It is lavishly illustrated, and provides excellent diagrams to support some of the concepts such as how a phalanx of Greek infantry manoevered and then moved into combat. The book covers the technology of the times, but also looks at tactics and gives an overview of the politics that lead to the various conflicts. I would higly recommend this book for beginners in the field of ancient warfare such as myself. My only reservation, is that while the primarary authorities are extensively referenced in the text, I would have liked to see a bibliography (although the glossary is great too!) Highly recommended for beginners or those with a general interest in the topic.

Must have if you are interested in ancient wars

I just got this for my son and I ended up reading it first. I am sure during this X'Mas both of us will want to fight for the book. The pictures and the drawings are of the highest qualities. I love the descriptions of major wars. I just wish that the author has given it more explanation of the drawings for the major battles like adding more legends. Also, it is kind of hard to read/understand the numbers and types of soldiers for both sides on the battlefield. But all in all, this is a great book that I suspect I will read and re-read many times.

The Rza is no ordinary rapper and this book proves it! While essential to the understanding of the CD "Enter the Wu-Tang", it offers the reader the unique opportinity to learn more about the unique members of the clan. A must for any Wu-Tang Clan fan!

I must admit I was surprised and a little skeptical when the RZA, whom I have always seen as a stoic hardened man, decided to assemble a collection of his favorite recipes from his childhood as well as a few exotic dishes from around the world. My skepticism quickly evaporated upon receiving this charming tome, however. The Wu-Tang Manual provides the reader with a wealth of quick and easy (and cheap!) dishes that will leave your mouth watering. Whether you're planning a quiet, intimate time for a couple to relax, or a lively group gathering for a shower, graduation, or holiday, there are recipes here for all occasions. You'll learn how to turn out perfect renditions of classics with a twist such as Brown Butter Pecan Muffins, Baked Banana French Toast, and Smoked Salmon Benedict on Potato Pancakes, as well as new dishes to add to your repertory such as Tea-Smoked Trout Salad, and Baked Eggs with Fresh Corn "Polenta" and Slow-Roasted Tomatoes.

Though only 26 pages from start to finish, The Wu-Tang Manual is a decadent feast of a read, with usually dry recipes spiced up with some personal cooking anecdotes from the RZA and friends from the Wu-Tang clan. One such tale about the RZA and Method Man's disastrous first attempt at a crab bisque literally had me laughing until I was in tearz.

With mouthwatering photos and sections on menus and sources, The Wu-Tang Manual is all you need to throw a stylish and sophisticated dinner that any chef would be proud of.

I bought this book because I have been an avid fan of the Wu since high school. I had a feeling it would be good but little did I know that it would be in the tops of the bests books I've ever read in my life. If you've ever listened to a Wu song and wondered what this line meant, or what this word means, look no further. Who knew that there was actual rhyme and reason to ever since word picked for their lyrics.

If this is truely only a volume 1 out of many, I can't wait for the others. No matter what level of Wu fan you are, this will double it at least. Get this book.

Robert Palmer explains on this fantastic book, the origins and development of one authentic and unique american art form.
Palmer tells in a fascinating way the origins of the blues, from the age of slavery and its complex polyrithmyc african roots through its development in the Deep South plantation-based economy era, to its final consolidation and world spreading in Chicago's Southside.
Read how Charley Patton developed the genre, along with other gifted musicians like Tommy Johnson from the then almost unknown musical traditions of afroamericans on Mississippi's Delta to finaly create a true american tradition. Find how the amazing and legendary Robert Johnson , took the torch from Patton and made a whole revolution, exploring new musical forms for blues guitar playing. Discover the development of other blues scenes in Helena, New Orleans, Memphis, Detroit and more; and finally the emigration in 1943 of Muddy Waters to Chicago and the cultural revolution he provoked on a global scale when the blues gets electrified and brought to the big urban centers of America.

What are you waiting for!!!, stop reading and buy this book!!!.

I'm a big fan of the blues. I even play a little country blues on the guitar. That being said, I was really looking forward to reading this book. Unfortunately, I have found this to be a really dull read. The book just seems to ramble along, trying to romanitize the blues instead of just giving the facts. I already understand the magic of the blues. I didn't need a book convincing me of that magic. It was also difficult to keep track of the chronology of the development of the music.
The author talks a lot about African rhythm when, in fact, African rhythms have little to do with the blues. Discussions of rhythm would be more appropriate in a book about jazz. I found myself skipping ahead in hopes of finding something interesting. Alas, I did something I don't often do once I start a book--I stopped reading it.

Robert Palmer's book "Deep Blues" is nothing short of an anthropological journey to find the genesis of the blues. He does an excellent job of highlighting the various early popular bluesmen, men such as Tommy Johnson, Charlie Patton, and Robert Johnson. He details life working on the plantations of the deep south, life on a Saturday night living it up in the various juke joints of the south, and the personal lives of early blues singers which led to the creation of the blues, and by extension, American music as we have come to know it.

The book begins by going back to the western coast of Africa, where the slave trading occurred, and Palmer details very well the oral music traditions of people from the various tribes and countries, presenting styles which could be found in the music of the eastern and southern United States from the late 19th and on into the early 20th Century. He highlights, in great detail, the sounds and how they were made in the mouth by particular tribes in Africa, and in what areas of the country and these sounds began showing up performed in field hollers done by workers on plantations throughout the south. I do not use the word anthropological lightly, as Robert Palmer does a magnificent job of highlighting the blues tradition from it's specific oral traditions in Africa, to it's nascent phase in the early 20th Century, to Muddy Waters' time in the Delta on up through his success in Chicago, to Sonny Boy Williamson's King Biscuit Time radio show and beyond.

Various interviews abound from people and relatives of the blues musicians and by articles from early periodicals detailing their lives, so by the end of the book one really feels as though we were on the freight car with Robert Johnson traveling and avoiding the hellhound on his trail.

A book for anyone who truly loves the blues. Being a book just shy of 300 pages however, only so much detail can be given, which is why this will probably not be the last book on the blues I own. 4 1/2 stars.

My almost 6 yr. old received this book and CD as a gift from my parents, and we are all loving it! We listen to it in the car and sing along to its upbeat and catchy tunes. The music is much more sophisticated than any other "kids music" I've listened to (and I have 3 little ones). What's more, my daughter has been spewing forth trivia about how long her hair can grow if never cut, how her lungs work, and how many bones are in her body! I think this is a great purhcase, and I highly recommend it.

I may not be a big book reader for my spare time, but I can tell you this is the best book I have ever read. I love the Spice Girls, and Ginger was always my fav, and to find out more about my favorite female in the world, well, is awesome. she is such a cool person and a great writter! I was talking about it at school once, and one of my classmates came up to me, and wanted to read it. she agreed, this is a good book! she couldn't put it down (as I couldn't, either!). it explains a lot, and fills in the holes as why Geri left the Spice Girls. this is her whole life story, and you also get to learn even more about the Spice Girls than you probably knew from before! oh, and if you have her solo album, you might not understand some of her lyrics- but once I read this, and listened to it again, the whole album made sense, and I could relate everything back to her book. it's awesome. a definte for spice girl fans.

This is the grandaddy of all of studio session books. So many have come after this (Jimi Hendrix, Clapton, etc.) but this is the gold standard. I have given this to a few people that I know would appreciate it, and every one of them has raved... just like I am doing.

My only suggestion is that Mr. Lewisohn updates it with all of the new information that has been put out there since this was published (many books including The Beatles's ANTHOLOGY CD and book for example).

I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

I love The Beatles records and have since my Dad purchased "Meet the Beatles" in 1966. The first records I bought on my own, as soon as I had a paper route and spending money, were The Beatles' LPs, in order of American release. I even knew the exact running time of every Beatles song and couldn't imagine that there were people in the world who didn't know every Beatles song. If you're like me, the revelation of the details of the recording of every Beatles track, as detailed in this book, will be a thrill to pore over.

An excellent resource for those who care how the Beatles made magic

Review Date: 2005-08-20
Some Beatles books are gossipy, and others feature questionable armchair critical analyses of their music. Lewisohn takes a totally different approach. Working with the original Abbey Road studio logs, he's created a day-by-day record of what the Beatles were doing in Abbey Road studios, who played what instruments, and how long it took them to record and write their songs.

I own a first edition of this book and have used it ever since I bought a used copy sometime in the early 1990s. I reread it many times that summer, and that somewhat battered, oversized copy still sits on my shelf. It's a book I returned to when I set up a mini home recording studio, and returned to yet again when I was learning how to mix my sounds. Although this is not a "how-to" book, you can learn an awful lot about good recording and mixing technique by carefully reading it.

Furthermore, Lewisohn packed his text with surprises. I, for one, was shocked to learn how primitive Abbey Road's technology was, even by the standards of a British studio in the 1960s. I was also surprised to learn why the mono and stereo mixes of the Beatles' music often sounded so different from one another even though they were mixed from the same masters. Also, it's amazing to learn just how quickly some seemingly complex tracks were put together, while some seemingly simple songs took far more work. As a side benefit, Lewisohn's comprehensive notes probably knocked the wind out of more than one bootlegger trying to pass off BBC radio performances as lost studio recordings of Beatle tracks! Throughout, there are many, many excellent photos - many of which have not been reproduced elsewhere. Just when you think Lewisohn's run out of goodies, there's a rare interview with Paul McCartney that touches on the songwriting process.

I can't rate this as a five star book although I'd like to. As good as Lewisohn is, there are a lot of minor details here that are misleading or just plain wrong. Lewisohn can't seem to tell phasing from flanging (two very different techniques to create swirling electric guitar sounds). He also prints quotes from studio musicians without elaboration, leading me to believe he has a weak grasp on performance and theory. For example, one horn player describes a McCartney song as being "between the cracks" of two different keys; the song in question actually seems to have been recorded slightly flat and sped up to normal pitch upon playback, but we have no way of knowing what the horn player actually meant without more information. The average reader might walk away thinking that the song used two different keys, unless he also knew that the song was in a single key. I'm surprised an editor didn't catch this stuff.

If you're a Beatles fan who could care less about their personal lives, but would love to learn more about how they created their studio albums - this book is for you. If you're interested in home recording, you'll learn lots of tidbits here too. Lewisohn deserves a lot of credit for creating this resource, and I wish that it weren't such a difficult book to find.

The true gospel according to the rock band Genesis

Review Date: 2008-07-27
The official biography on progressive rockers turned pop phenomenons Genesis called Genesis : Chapter and Verse is a must for all Genesis fans (released in September of last year).
The book tells of the history of Genesis and, unlike other band biographies released over the years, is the band's official story in their own words so this is the setting the record straight biography on the band told by all of its band members (past and present including Tony Banks, Phil Collins, Steve Hackett, Anthony Phillips, Mike Rutherford and Chris Silver) plus record executivess, managers and road crew over the last 40 odd years of the band's history.
The book tells us of how keyboard player Tony Banks, lead singer Peter Gabriel, guitarist/bass player Mike Rutherford and guitarist Anthony Phillips first met at the English boarding school Charterhouse and their fateful decision to become Genesis whilst still teenagers.
They also talk about the struggles with the band's first manager Jonathan King and being dropped before Charisma Records head Tony Stratton-Smith gave the band some new life right up to the breakdown of Ant Phillips (which caused him to leave) and the succession of drummers they had ala Spinal tap before they found their first classic lineup with singer/drummer Phil Collins (who stayed until his amicable 1996 departure and returned in 2006 for their 2007 Turn It On Again Tour) and guitarist Steve Hackett (whom left in 1977).
Then, we read about their evolution of a 60s Brit pop band to pioneers of progressive rock in the 1970s to first the departure of Peter Gabriel in 1975 and their fateful decision to carry on as a quartet. Then seeing Steve Hackett leave in 1977 and in between covered all of the albums in full detail and many solo projects of each member respectively.
The book also captures the band from its 1978-92 commercial heyday as a global phenomenon (including the ill-fated 1982 reunion with Gabriel and Hackett at the Milton Keynes Bowl), topping the charts all over the world and selling over 150 million albums worldwide.
The book also goes into great detail about the departure of Phil Collins and the ill-fated decision to carry on with Ray Wilson before deciding to call it a day after the huge US failure of Calling All Stations before reuniting with Collins once more for the 2007 "Turn It On Again" tour (which just ended and I saw the show in Boston and what a performance, they still have it).
In addition to the band members' story are comments from long standing sidemen (Daryl Stuermer, Chester Thompson, Bill Bruford, Nir Z), managers the band had over the years (Jonathan King, Gail Colson (whom co-managed the band with Tony Stratton-Smith from 1970-73) and Tony Smith (who is still Genesis' manager in 2007 since taking over in 1973), producers (Hugh Padgham and David Hentschel) and record executives (including Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Erutegun in his last interview before his 2006 death) all of whom share their personal memories of working with Genesis, as does the band's loyal road crew.
Genesis Chapter and Verse is a book that once you read you can't stop plus jam packed with many unseen photos of the band and assorted crew over the years.

There are some great photos of the band in this well put together book. You get a look into all the major players that were in the band or an important part of the bands success. The book is told in a series of interviews which lends itself to the breezy nature of the writing. If I have one complaint it's that the period that the band had the most success,1983-1992,not much is written about the actual making of the music for which they became famous. This is a book for the fans of Genesis, not a serious critique of their work and if you are a fan this is a must buy.

INCREDIBLE STORIES BUT, WRITING ERRORS? WHAT?

I JUST FINISHED READING THE BOOK, I AM NOT AN ENGLISH TEACHER, BUT I HAVE TO TELL THAT IT IS INCREDIBLY SAD TO SEE THAT THIS BOOK HAS A LOT OF WRITING ERRORS, ALONG WITH A COUPLE OF DATA ERRORS. IT SEEMS THAT THE EDITORS DID NOT INVEST THE NECESSARY TIME TO RE-READ THE BOOK OVER AND OVER TO CORRECT THE ERRORS. AND, ON THE TIMELINE AT THE END OF THE BOOK IT IS SAID THAT CHESTER THOMPSON WAS BORN IN 1968, WHEN HE WAS REALLY BORN IN 1948. TWENTY YEARS EARLIER, AND BEING THE OLDEST OF THE GENESIS CLAN. DON'T GET ME WRONG... I'M A HUGE GENESIS FAN, AS WELL AS EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN, INCLUDING PETER GABRIEL, STEVE HACKETT, PHIL COLLINS, MIKE + THE MECHANICS, AND FOUND A VERY GOOD BOOK TO READ AND VERY HELPFULL TO UNDERSTAND THE SOUND OF ONE OF THE GREATEST BANDS IN THE WORLD.

If you know my reviews, you know that I'm one of the world's biggest Genesis fans. They're my favorite group, and always have been. So it was a total no-brainer for me to pick up the latest book about the band, "Genesis: Chapter & Verse," which is basically written by the band members (both past & present) themselves, as they tell the story of the group in their own words. This is an excellent Genesis book, and the most up-to-date so far (going straight up to the band's reunion tour from 2007). It's filled with lots of insights into the group & their music, how they grew up, how they got together, how they work together, how they come up with all of their incredible music, and how they live their lives. Besides the insightful comments from all of the band members themselves, there are equally-insightful passages written by many people close to the band, such as touring sidemen, managers, producers, roadies, and record company executives. And there's *lots* of great photographs too---in fact, the photographs take up about half of the book!---and many of them come from the band's own personal archives. One of my favorite photos is on page 187, of a Genesis roadie in 1977 lying down on the street in San Francisco, taking a break. Above him is the marquee for Winterland, where Genesis were playing. It reads "Mar. 25 & 26, Genesis." And just below that: "Apr. 7, P. Gabriel." Ain't that somethin'? Peter Gabriel played a gig at Winterland just two weeks after his old band did! Man, that must've been an awesome doubleheader of shows for Northern California Genesis fans. Wow! Wish I could've been there.... However, I must be honest when I tell you that, while "Genesis: Chapter & Verse" is a great book, it does fall short of being a perfect, "definitive" book about the band. I somehow get the sense that this Genesis book, even at a generous 359 pages, was still heavily edited. The book basically skims over the making of the individual albums, only devoting about three or four pages each to the making of such classics as "Foxtrot," "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway," and later classics like "Duke" and "Invisible Touch." That tells me that the Genesis men surely had a lot more to say about what went into creating these albums, but a lot of material was left out of the book. Also, there are *quite a few* typos in "Chapter & Verse," especially towards the end. Examples: "The Turn It Up Again Tour" (wrong!), "Follow Me Follow You" (wrong!), touring drummer Chester Thompson being born in 1968 (wrong!), and several more. These typos don't ruin the book, but they do tarnish it somewhat, and I sincerely hope that these will be corrected in future editions of the book.I currently have seven different books about Genesis on my bookshelf (with "Chapter & Verse" being the seventh), and I think there are two books about the band that are a little bit better than "Chapter & Verse": Hugh Fielder's "The Book Of Genesis" (published in 1984), and "Genesis: A Biography" by Dave Bowler & Bryan Dray (from 1993). Both books are out-of-print, but you can still buy them used, and I think they are put together a little bit better, are a little bit more insightful, and they go into deeper detail about the band, it's music and history, even though they are no longer up-to-date. Do seek them out if you can. Nevertheless, I greatly appreciate the wealth of material that is found here in "Chapter & Verse," and there's certainly a lot of it to enjoy. I highly recommend "Genesis: Chapter & Verse" to all my fellow diehard Genesis fans out there. Despite it's flaws, it's still a great book about this great band, and I know you'll enjoy it.

There are many things I like about this book, but what I like best is that it's honest. Unlike many other books, it doesn't promise you the world, and a successful career overnight, but instead gives you an inside look at the music industry and guides you on how to make things happen for yourself.
The language is conversational, and the author has a great sense of humour. It simplifies issues most artists find confusing (like legal documents and royalty calcuation!) and is a great read.
'Getting Signed!' is a text book, idiot's guide and light read all rolled into one. It helped me a lot, and I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who wants to have anything to do with the music business.
George Howard also teaches a number of great courses at berkleemusic online.

This is the book I needed when I was 15 years old, and grasping at any information to help move forward with a music career. Define where you are in your development as an artist, define where you would like to go, and more importantly why you want to go there. Then take action with the knowledge and confidence to realize your dreams and goals. Learn what labels look for in bands and artists, and how to position yourself to negotiate a win/win deal for yourself. Learn all the perspectives of the business of music from artist, label, distributor, publicity, and promotion, to management, and booking agents. Basically everything you need to understand to be successful, written in an understandable and accessible style, with a sense of humor. I loved it and learned so much I could write my own book with the research it inspired me to undertake. Don't just dream big, learn what it takes to do the work to become successful.

A very enjoyable read, this book is broken down into manageable chapters that give you the information and tools to help you reach your goals.

A Memoir of Music, Love, and Survival

I was unfamiliar with the Kindertransport that moved 10,000 Jewish children to safety from the Holocaust. This biography brings that event to life through the memories of Lisa Jura. At 14, her parents sent her to London and the book covers that wrenching journey and the next six years of her life. Growing up during the blitz in a refugee home with 31 children makes a fascinating book.
Lisa's devotion to music weaves the story together as she strives towards her parents' dream. Becoming a concert pianist seems unachievable under the circumstances, but this touching biography details Lisa's progress towards that goal. This account has appeal for both adult and teen readers.

author of Cooking Jewish: 532 Great Recipes from the Rabinowitz Family

from the Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles
August 30, 2002

Vienna, 1938. In the city of Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven and Strauss, 14-year-old musical prodigy Lisa Jura looks forward to a promising career as a concert pianist. Hitler has other plans. With the breaking of glass on Kristallnacht, Jura's dreams are shattered.

Internationally celebrated concert pianist Mona Golabek, with journalist and poet Lee Cohen, has crafted a loving, lyrical tribute to her mother, Lisa Jura, in "The Children of Willesden Lane: Beyond the Kindertransport: A Memoir of Music, Love, and Survival."

Jura was one of 10,000 Jewish children saved from the Nazis by the British and sent on the Kindertransport to safety from Eastern Europe. Already being compared to "The Diary of Anne Frank," this simultaneously heartbreaking and uplifting tale weaves together the stories that Golabek's mother told her about prewar Austria; the gut-wrenching separation from her family; life at the orphanage on Willesden Lane; and the power of music to help her survive.

As Jura's mother, Malka, puts her on the train, she says the prophetic words that will sustain and inspire her daughter and future generations: "Hold on to your music. Let it be your best friend."

In a world turned ugly, the beauty of music becomes Jura's strength, and, against tremendous odds, with the help and encouragement of the 30 other displaced children at the orphanage, she wins a scholarship to London's Royal Academy.

"Each kid saw something in my mother's music that reminded them of what they had left behind in Czechoslovakia, in Austria, in Germany," says Golabek, a Grammy-nominated artist, "and that's what I tried to do in the story, not only to pay homage to my mother, but to all these kids and to their bravery."

The book opens with Jura's tantalizing daydream of performing in a great concert hall and closes with the fulfillment of that dream, as she makes her debut before an exhilarated crowd. And in between, the pages burst with melody: Jura pounding the cadenza of the Grieg "Piano Concerto" to drown out the sounds of bombs during London's blitz, Jura visualizing Chopin fleeing a flaming Warsaw as she struggles with the somber coda of the "Ballade," Jura remembering her mother's Sabbath candles as she plays the solemn opening of Beethoven's "Pathetique."

"My mom and her mother never cared if a piece is in C major. What really counts is the passion behind it, the image. If it's `Clair de Lune,' imagine the moon over a desert island. That imagination allowed her to survive the horrors of what she experienced, because a C-major chord will not inspire you through the horrors. It's the moonlight, the idea that maybe the composer wrote it for someone he loved. These things inflamed her imagination, and that's how she inflamed mine."

And now Golabek's book will inflame the imagination of a whole new generation. The Milken Family Foundation, together with Facing History and Ourselves, an educational organization that teaches tolerance to 1 million students annually, are working with Golabek to bring the story to schools across the country by developing a companion curriculum guide.

Plans are under way to launch the book in Austria, and make it available to teachers as part of the now mandatory four-year Holocaust education program for students.

The saga of Golabek's 18-year struggle to get the story published is almost as harrowing as her mother's story itself. "It went through many, many writings; many, many ups and downs, starts and disappointments," Golabek says.

Now the accolades and offers are pouring in. On Sept. 24, she will be an honored guest speaker at the California Governor's Conference for Women at the Long Beach Convention Center and will appear at Beth Am on Nov. 17 with her sister, pianist Renee Golabek-Kaye, and Jura's four grandchildren, all musicians: Michele, 16; Sarah, 14; Jonathan, 8; and Rachel, 7. Brandeis University will honor her at the Skirball Cultural Center next March 31.

Last week Golabek was interviewed on NPR's Morning Edition and was the subject of a feature story by Andy Meisler of the New York Times. In the planning stages is a concert next year co-sponsored by the U.S. Holocaust Museum and the Austrian government. And, of course, Golabek is considering movie offers.

On her syndicated radio show, "The Romantic Hours," which highlights stirring writings against a musical backdrop (Saturdays at 10 p.m., 105.1 FM), Golabek often quotes the poet Jean Paul Richter: "Life fades and withers behind us, but of our immortal and sacred soul all that remains is music."

"That was a quote my mother taught me, and the whole reason why I wrote this book and why I created `The Romantic Hours' was that my mother felt through words and through music our souls would be immortalized."
