A guide to a new musical worldReview Date: 2008-07-22
Broaches a vast subject in an engaging and refreshing wayReview Date: 2006-02-21
There is a similarly-titled double CD which came out to accompany the book, but I can't see it on Amazon. It is as eclectic as the book and features a lot of the artists interviewed and mentioned - Sun Ra, Aphex Twin, and others. I have played the CD to death and would recommend it. You gotta respect a compilation that puts The Beach Boys right next to African Headcharge, or My Bloody Valentine next to Brian Eno - and makes it work so well.
The book also features a list of albums and artists in the appendix, which I found useful as a way of doing further research.
Another book in a similar vein is Kodwo Eshun's "More Brilliant Than The Sun", though it focuses solely on the innovators in electronic music.

Fascinating and frustratingReview Date: 2001-09-13
Ultimately, however, I leave the book feeling a bit underwhelmed. Ironically, it is the book's very eclecticism that works against it. I personally did not see the connectionsbetween, say, the music of Kraftwerk and Toop's (admittedly fascinating) discussion of the sound of the Amazon jungle. These disgressions ultimately make the book useless as a survey. Of course, I doubt that it was meant to be so, but Toop fails to make the kinds of connections that have given books by Greil Marcus and others a fascinating unity.
Perhaps, though, this is the point. Much like the ambient music that serves as the centerpoint of the book, this book simply floats by, not asking you to make any conclusions. It is probably best read in bits, before bed or in the bathroom, where the individual moments of brilliance can be better appreciated. Very ambient, indeed.

Clear and authoritative guide to the principles and practices of film editingReview Date: 2007-11-30
What makes the guide as fresh today as when it appeared is that it is primarily not about technical considerations but about how an editor has to think in order to construct seamless and engaging scenes that are true to the overall story of a film. At the same time this thinking is given a practical application. The focus is on why rather than how, but it goes much further in explaining the basics of what to do when editing and how to put together a scene than many other books out there.
Dmytryk makes a distinction between a cutter and an editor, and cutting is merely competence with the equipment of film editing, whether it is a moviola or Final Cut Pro. Editing is always thinking, and is as creative in its approach to the film as shot as directing is creative in its approach to the film as written. Subtle variations in editing can change completely the tone or mood of a film. Dmytryk illustrates his points with several examples from major films he directed or edited (e.g. The Caine Mutiny, Murder, My Sweet and many more). Dmytryk is a master of his craft and is generous in his description of what it takes to pursue this mastery. This little book is an indispensible part of any filmmaker or film lover's library.

The coming standard in lighting design instruction.Review Date: 2000-05-15
Steve Shelley, by taking a chronological approach to light design, illustarates exactly what goes into a successful design. He defines his terms, explains why he does things, and provides anecdotes and insights that make the book entertaining and easy to read.
The final section of the book on how to focus lights will teach you more about creating and implementing a light design than any other book you have, can or will read.
Organised Stage LightingReview Date: 2002-07-08
But - it offers a very good guide to the real-world contraints and demands of lighting. The author give very concrete and useful suggestions and advice. Analysing a complete design ('Hokey') step-by-step is a clever move. It is also the perfect book for those who want learn how to accurately document their designs to last nut and bolt. Even with my 20+ years in lighting and lighting design, I found this book a worthwhile addition to my collection of lighting textbooks.

A helpful resource on Flute MethodReview Date: 2006-11-25
I refer to the information in the tone section more than any other. The other 'books' in the omnibus were a bit sparse in terms of content. I am glad I spent under 30.00usd on the omnibus instead of buying each book individually.
For those musicians with a sense of humor, the writing style of the author is quite fun to read. His discussions are loaded with flute-specific musings, puns, and other subtle rhetoric. His writing style is ingenious...and a relief from the monotoned, sedate style we usually encouter in method publications.

The same composition appears on another Peter Ostroushko CD, but this version is significant superior. Incredible music, easily worth the price of this set and then some. I've never heard anything like it. It is a profound work of art.

AWESOME TV SERIES COMPANION + LOTS OF GOODIES!!Review Date: 2008-10-29
The book quality is amazing,..[I expected less to be sincere,..].
Even being paperback,..it's awesome,..the book is supposed to be the F.B.I confidential but leaked (to us) files of the Fox River convicts who escaped and you can get knowledge of every little detail concerning their lives before being imprisoned and the reasons while they are in prison now,..their weakness and breaking points,..really interesting,..
Then it has very detailed psychological profiles and points of view (from F.B.I agents) of the other main characters who are not inmates,..
On the back of the book,..it contains a DVD with lots of extras and never seen footage,..along with some promo stuff,..very entertaining,..
DEFINITELY RECOMENDED TO ALL PRISON BREAK FOLLOWERS!!(ALSO VERY NICE PRICED!). SO THERE'S NOTHING TO WASTE,..GET IT NOW!

From Someone Who Was ThereReview Date: 2008-08-22
Punk Pioneers by Jenny Lens is far and away the most awesome coffee table quality book about the early punk scene. It contains an incredible range of artists that were around during punk's conception, birth, and childhood. Its scope is much broader and helps the reader understand where punk was coming from and what was going on in the parallel musical universes of bands like Van Halen and artists like Bob Marley. I think this aspect of Jenny's book is really important, because as I've said time and time again, seeing early punk in isolation does not really convey how far it was from the mainstream nor does it acknowledge the influences of what came before it. Jenny's book acknowledges the New York punk and early glam bands that set the stage for what would become a unique West Coast cultural movement. Punk Pioneers cements Jenny's status as punk photography's Alpha Bitch.
Thanks, Jenny!Review Date: 2008-06-24

Answer to PrayerReview Date: 2007-08-12
The score itself is in wonderful condition. The printing is clear and easy to read. I was, at first, concerned that I would end up with a huge conductor's style score, but it's of normal size without compromising on readability.
Highly recommended.
