This book is simply fantastic. Yes, there are some old or simplified opinions, but as for tool for explaining how the airplane flies, invaluable.

My first and still favorite text on piloting a plane

Review Date: 2008-05-15
I remember reading and re-reading this text as a young boy--fascinated by everything and anything related to airplanes--flying imaginary airplanes in my head with the admonition to always 'watch my angle of attack'. When I finally got my pilot's license years later, I credit this book with doing the most to make me a safe and confident pilot (second only to my great instructor.) It dispels the popular belief in the general public that the rudder turns the plane and the throttle makes it go faster, and explains to pilots the reality of flight: the elevator controls angle of attack and hence airspeed, the ailerons control the turn, and the rudder is primarily a means of correcting for physical phenomenon such as adverse yaw. Even today the largest killer of pilots is the stall/spin, the result of hoping that pulling back on the stick will make the ground go away, or that more inside rudder will fix that overshoot on final. Yes, Mr. Langewiesche repeats the point again and again, but it's worth repeating: the stick controls the angle of attack, and if you don't exceed the critical angle of attack, the plane won't stall. If the plane doesn't stall, it doesn't spin either. It's that simple, and that profound.

Yes, the physics and writing style are outdated (read Smith's "Illustrated Guide to Aerodynamics" for a more complete yet still readable explanation of the physics of lift, and why Bernoulli's 'suction' and Langewiesche's 'downwash' are just two different ways of looking at the same phenomenon.) And if you're flying a modern unstable fighter or fly-by-wire jumbo jet Langewiesche's simple concepts break down. For today's modern GA aircraft, however, this is still the most readable text there is for explaining not how an airplane flies, but how to fly them.

To begin, the entire Amazon experience was great. The product itself was the icing on the cake. Any aspiring pilots, or veterans, should consider this a "must read" publication. It clarifies many misled bits of advice, about flight, and makes knowledge of aircraft easily understood.

This is a wonderful book, it's written for the Student pilot. But, it's a great read for all pilots. It covers the big picture and the little things that you may not think of, or may have forgotten. This book may help the new CFI to teach different techniques to the student pilot.

I "lost" my art of Shen Ku book a few years ago and I have been looking for it since. I could not remember Zeek and confused Zen with Shen so searching online never worked (rubbish in rubbish out). Last night I found it after decorating a room and I have not been able to put it down since.

It is an informative book with many tips that I still use today. For example, when on holiday I always take two wallets, one as a working and decoy wallet and I never take out my real wallet in public spaces. While reading Shen Ku there it was. Zeek explaining why I should do that! I obviously took his suggestion to hart.

There are other nuggets such as dietary advice and what to eat when you have diarrhoea etc etc. The book even shows you how to do CPR with a bit of added wit to make sure you remember. This is a fantastic read and yes there are comical sketches but the knowledge provided by Zeek will stand you in good stead for life.

Fantastic book written in a witty and infomative way.

If you don't own or read another book in your life, at least have this one handy. Its kind of big, the size of a laptop- but if it comes to taking only what I can carry if the big earthquake hits one night, I will have my glasses in one hand and screw the laptop (its the most expensive thing I own!), taking this book in the other! In fact I don't even have to think that far because I have stuffed a copy into the evacuation backpack which is sitting near my door.

This Zeek person has attempted to empty the contents of his brain into a book- if this is everything he knows how to do I would be impressed. Its no biography, but a collection of knowledge- knowledge lost to most people, knowledge that you didn't know you wish you knew. The illustrations have a definate style to them- you can enjoy them as art, but they all have a purpose- to demonstrate an explanation or to make you laugh.

I am an English teacher in Japan, and some of my high-intermediate or higher coworkers and students have bought it after I brought it in on a slow day for my own entertainment. It's written in such small chunks with so many illustrations, that non-native speakers of an intermediate or high level can easily enjoy it.

You can use this book as a springboard into many other areas of interest- read one little idea of his a day and see where you can take it! This book will remain interesting for YEARS and is well worth the money.

A fun, quirky book with little bits of information about everything and anything from information about the use of herbs to accupressure to how to keep children entertained(!).

The illustrations are wonderfully detailed and the how-to pics are somehow instructionally explicit and simple to follow without being cluttered and illegible.

Part comic book, part philosophy, part mystery, and all fun. Don't take it too seriously, but enjoy the ride!

This book is great...it has everything from tying knots, workout regimens, motivational anecdotes, all the way to macrobiotics and sex-enhancing techniques! This is by far the ultimate everything book! I was looking through a copy that one of my friends had and went to both Borders and Barnes & Noble, but they never seem to stock the neat titles I find! I immediately came home and ordered the book on Amazon.com and it came quick, in great shape, great transaction, great book!

In an age when architects and planners were spouting all kinds of brave-new-world nonsense (or mindlessly absorbing it, or even worse - building it), Jacobs burst onto the scene with an incredible dose of sanity mixed with common sense and wisdom, carefully observing the urban environment and drawing a host of remarkably sensible conclusions. For some reason we architects seem always at risk of believing our own nuttiest fantasies. Jacobs is a perennial corrective.

I really love this book. I read The Bad Girl's Guide to Getting What You Want first, because based on the title it had more to do with my situation than the other books in the series. I enjoyed it, but I have to say this book is better. Even if, like me, you have no real desire to go on a road trip, this book is hilarious inspiring. It quickly had me excited to pee outdoors, lie about my name, and sneak into empty motel rooms to take a free shower (this coming from a girl who normally obeys speedlimits, pays bills promptly, and is always so polite and tragically walked all over by authority figures). If you're looking for something to inspire your inner wild woman burried under layers and layers of social niceties, and rules about ladylikeness, this is the book.

My freshman year of college I took a trip to New Orleans with my roommate. Her mom lent us her minivan and left this book and a bag of marshmallows on the floor of the car. Six hours in a car had never passed so quickly! This book makes long drives of monotonous highway FUN. I wouldn't say it's a cover-to-cover read. Just pack it with your car snacks and flip through the pages to have some fun. Next time, I'll be sure to add a couple squirt guns to my supplies list.

Makes me look forward to my next road trip!

Funny yet practical ideas on making the most of your trip trip when you just want to get away from the everyday stuff. Where to park overnight to sleep if you have to. How to get out of stuff, like speeding tickets. Where to take a shower or clean up while on the road.

Some stuff I would never be brave enough to try, like egging on a policeman by swigging a NA beer in front of them while you're driving! Why take that chance? We can get ourselves in trouble in lots of other ways besides having to interact with the cops on purpose! Good advise on where to bring your car if you're having car trouble. Funny dress up ideas if you want to exhibit a "road persona". Think Thelma and Louise. Now, if only I had that classic muscle car...

Don't leave home without it!

I read so many books on breaking into the adult film business...I even spent $1,297 on this course from www.adultfilmmaking.com, the "only" online adult film school, which was a total rip off. This book by Ray West and one other one that I downloaded off the internet for $80 have been the ONLY two books I've read that actually give legitimate, usable information on how make money in this business. I don't understand the negative reviews on this book. Yes, the book has grammical and spelling errors but if readers aren't able to overlook that for the information it offers then they probably should stick to their 9 to 5 job anyway. If you're interested in getting into the adult business profitably and successfully, you need all the resources you can get. This book is one valuable resource to get you started. If you're a bible-thumper looking for ways to condemn this industry then you're probably the ones who are degrading the content of this book. Why waste your time? Get this book if you want to make money in this business.

Good book to read I would recommend it to everyone interested in this business.

I read many books about special effects and films. I'm a huge fan of the Star Wars franchises (at least until the most recent cartoon).

THIS ONE IS PERFECT!!! So many detailed descriptions of the evolution from idea to story to script to shooting. An incredible level of detail. So many pictures, storyboards, illustrations, and documents. This is the first time I've picked up such a huge and detailed volume and devoured it from start to finish.

Even if you already own a lot of material about Lucas and Star Wars, this is a worthy addition to the library.

It truly is definitive - but also is beautiful and well written. BUY IT!!!

When I first saw Star Wars I was very young. At first I had a strong desire to know how all the cool things on the screen were accomplished. Over the years bits and pieces appeared in magazines and books, but nothing really felt complete. As I grew older I became interested in the ideas behind the movie, where they came from, how did they change over time, what was the history. Now, I've grown interested in the stories of the people who worked behind the scenes. What is their history, what did they bring to the production? Now here it is, all in one book, with a lot of behind the scenes photos and stories. It uses interviews from the time of the film's making, so it isn't colored by the amazing success of the movie. It's a quick read, too. The pages are full of photos (most I've never seen before), though the font size is a little small. It's a high quality book and should last a long time, which is good, because I think I'll be reading this one again and again.

The title of the book says it all. This is THE definitive collection on the making of Star Wars. Of course there were tons of documentaries being made after the initial film was a huge success but since nobody really knew what was going on with this strange film, film and video footage is sparse at best.
This gives us all the insight we could want about the making of this space fantasy. Even if you're not a Star Wars fan, you will love this record of this high budget independent film.

I also love that Molly Lou Melon has such great self esteem and doesn't resort to pouting or bullying when other kids are mean to her. She just keeps on doin' her own thing and in the end wins over the school bully. This book is now on my list of books to give as gifts to other children!

Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon es a story about a girl named Molly, who is extremly short. Her grandma is encouraging and never gives up on Molly. One day, Molly has to go to a different school and meets a bully. She oddly changes him from a cold-hearted bully to a warm-hearted friend. This book has gorgeous, colorful pictures that go along perfectly with the writing. I recommend this great, well-written book for all ages.

Molly Lou Melon doesn't give up, and she doesn't get down on herself. In spite of being short, she stands tall no matter what and her self-confidence and fun-loving personality always shine through. She even wins over the boy who tries so hard to hurt her feelings. The illustrations are cute and colorful, and children will adore Molly Lou Melon's silly, but loveable face (buck teeth and all)! This is a great book to teach children lessons about self-confidence, a positive attitude, friendship, love and how what is on the inside matters the most. A great gift... especially from a grandmother since it is the grandmother who gives Molly Lou Melon advice and encourages her to be herself.

[...] He teaches well, is very clear, and is obviously very talented as both a player and teacher.

His book Fretboard Theory and the accomplanying DVDs are not filled with practice exercises... rather, they are a road-map that points out what you really need to learn and study. For example, he suggests starting with the five pentatonic scale patterns, and then suggests many songs to learn that use these specific patterns.

The book is short on how to go about learning the scales other than via the suggested songs, but does an excellent job at teaching theory as it relates to the fretboard and using it in a practical way. Which is exactly the point: practical and consise fretboard theory. Not fretboard practice exercise book.

Desi backs these materials up with free song riff TABS, extra videos on youTube and iTunes, etc. All of these materials are first rate in production quality, especially the DVDs. Well worth the money, especially if you are self-motivated to practice with a little focus each day.

I love these books by Richard Scarry. I bought them when my children were small, and I bought this one for my 5 month old grandson. Even though he doesn't understand the words and pictures, he loves the colors, and there is so much to look at that they really entertain him. The other day he was kind of cranky so I sat in the rocker with him and read two of the books. He was asleep before I finished the second book, but I kept reading because I wanted to see what happened. You can't go wrong with these books for children of all ages!

This book is one of three books (the others are big book of animals and book of words) she brings to me just about every thirty minutes, which is driving me a little crazy but I'll just have to deal with it. She really gets into the scenes especially scenes of the circus, zoo, farm, grocery, home, beach, ships, trains, etc. and has built up quite the vocabulary. She's saying the names of the animals and their sounds, bodyparts, the landscape such as tree, sun, moon, cloud, flower and can point to most anything in the pages. The scenes of the airport, trucks and "when you grow up" aren't engaging her yet but I'm sure later when she gets it more.

Richard Scarry books are a beloved classic, they are and will be on the bookshelf in our home (until the grandkids). ;)

It really IS the BEST word book ever!

I LOVE this book! I had it when I was a child. My favorite word in it is on the kitchen page "Batter Spoon"!!!

I can't forget this book, because of it had several great factors. It covered almost every place a kid may see, with it's name to know what the object is. Each page shows kids different work spaces, lands, city life, even inside a home, room by room.
This would be an excellent book for preschoolers, and even younger as well. Children and their parents may create their own stories with the detailed scenes.

#1 word learning book ever

I had this book as a child, although the version I had was longer and more PC. This is a great word learning book. The only drawback is that all the characters are animals, so it has to be for a child who knows the animals are simply playing people roles and doing people things. I would recommend to anyone with kids. You cannot go wrong with this book. The older version is better since it has more pages (20 more pages), but it is hard to find in good condition and at a decent price.

This is a really nice book! i love the diagrams which I feel are very clear in showing the step-by-step process of how the stitches are done. Having no one around me who crochets or knits, I am a self-taught crocheter cum knitter who learnt my crochet through a tiny 15 page pamphlet from Coats & Clarks ( That I would recommend as well!).

Kooler's book is my only crochet book (till now at least) and I really like it. Lots and lots of tips and new stitches to try out and also lots of nice projects from giant ones to little ones to try out.
She also includes 2 sets of diagrams, one for left-handers and one for right-handers. Very nicely done. The stitches in the diagrams are also very clear. A nice glossary to refer to and the book helped to train me to learn to read patterns and "adjust my brain" to learning to read symbols and abbreviations at a glance. If you are a beginning or intermediate crocheter, I would recommend this book!

The book is truly wonderful! It gives you more than you can imagine and it would work quite nicely for the "do it yourself" folks. I highly recommend this book for beginners as well as seasoned crafters.

I bought this to replace a copy I owned that was destroyed in this year's flooding. It's a great reference book, with clear instructions and pictures.

This book is a must have resource for the crochet enthusiast! Patterns are always nice to have but what I like the most are the detailed how-to's and the stitch encyclopedia in the back. Donna Kooler provides all of the information you need to create your own design with the stitches, beginning counts, repeats, et cetera. I would recommend this to anyone interested in expanding or even just entering the world of crochet.

Ahhh! The Philosopher's coat!

I've made two of the philosopher's coats in different color palettes, and it was challenging and fun and great! Note to advanced crocheters: the directions are somewhat limited. I guess she figures that if you get to this stage, you don't need everything spelled out. I've had a ton of compliments on both coats. The other patterns are fine, but this was the reason I bought the book. Don't be intimidated! You'll love the challenge of it, and when you're done, you know you've created something very special.
