A well researced book giving good insights into the subject matter.Some of the cases seem to be a little loosely connected
with the game but that does not take away the fact that an inordinate number of people connected with game do take their own
lives. A very good read!

Strong thriller

That afternoon, writer Lydia Strong finally completes her latest novel, The Lost Girl, which for some reason was difficult
creating. Just after finishing the tale, her grandpa calls to tell her that her father, whom she met once, died in Nyack,
New York. Things come in threes; that night NYPD Missing persons Unit Detective Matt Stenopolis discusses with Lydia about
Lily Samuels, a missing former NYU journalism student of hers.
Three weeks ago, Lydia's brother Mickey committed suicide in Riverdale. Over two weeks ago Lily called Lydia pleading for her help as she says she is out of her league. Lydia responded leaving a voice message, which is why Matt is here. As Lydia and her husband former FBI Agent Jeffrey Mark ask questions of the cop, Matt abruptly cuts them off and leaves. His partner Jessamyn Bresslow reminds Matt that Lily is out there seeking proof that Mickey was murdered in spite of the overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Unable to remain on the sidelines, Lydia and Jeffrey begin to search for her missing protégé starting with tracing the last days of her sibling.
The fourth Strong thriller is a terrific investigative tale with an intriguing late twist that most of Lisa Miscione's fans will appreciate though some might say is too over the edge; this reviewer is with those who will enjoy the SMOKE and mirrors spin. The dueling investigations between the police detectives and the married connected couple are fun to observe while the death of her irresponsible biological father provides further insight into what makes Lydia tick. This is a fine entry in a delightful series.

I really liked this book.It described the emotional turmoil going on inside Joe(the main character)perfectly.While reading
this book you can feel his intense lonliness,his feeling of detatchment from the real world and his deep anguish at losing
a wonderful friendship.The relationship between him and Ashley was potrayed very well and so were his attempts of trying
to transform himself from the rich boy to a poor kid "taking in"the fair.

With a title this bad, you know the story has to be good. THE SPIDER is out-of-town fighting bad guys again, with the usual
twists and turns to the plot, and two bonus short stories from the 1930's to boot.

Suicide and the Life Span

Stillion and McDowell have developed a solid informational book on suicide. Their organization moves the reader from an understanding
of the historical factors relating to perspectives on the natue and causes of suicide. Then, using a life-span developmental
model, they present the issues of suicide in chiildren, adolescents, youung and middle adulthood and the elderly. each sectiioin
has a model that reviews psychological, cognitive and environmental risk factos for that age group as well as wrning signs,
triggering events and behaviors. Material relating to prevention, intervention and ostvention are presented in a cleare manner.
They conclude the book with a discussion of contemporary issues including the right-to-die debate and assisted suicide. An
extensive reference list adds to the value of the book. The only detraction is that the statistics are out-of-date, but that
can be managed by a visit to the CDC site. I recommend this book for the general public, teachers and professionals.

The Lonely Witnesses

This book, which I comment on as a general reader, is written from the perspective of a sociologist or behavioural scientist.
Sprinkled with Arabic terms and clearly based on years of fieldwork, it has 3 sections, entitled:
Islam
The Impossible National Community; with subsections on martyrdom in Iran and Palestine
The Transnational Neo-umma; Al-Qaeda's Martyrs
"Islam" surveys the concept of jihad, the active struggle against injustice or ignorance which is enjoined on Muslims; and that of martyrdom, which has a particular emphasis in the Shiite world. Apparently widespread martyrdom is a phenomenon of our own times, dating in large part from the Iranian revolution. This section also briefly describes the ideas of some "radical" Islamist thinkers, such as Mawdudi, Qutb, and (on the Shiite side) Shariati and Khomeini, who have re-interpreted martyrdom and jihad in a more activist way, appealing to individual self-sacrifice, and also moving away from the quietist view (acceptance of separation between Sharia and the state) which has mostly prevailed down the centuries.
"Martyrdom in Iran" looks at the period from the Islamic revolution up to the end of the war with Iraq, and the death of the luminous and quasi-sacred figure of Khomeini. It examines the deadly vogue for martyrdom which took hold during those years, and the inner needs and motivations of the Bassidji brigades' members. The writing on Palestine conveys vividly (in 32 pages) the feeling of humiliation, anxiety about Israeli attacks, and the boredom and passivity caused by chronic unemployment and a situation where any hint of activism will likely lead to arrest. It explores both Israeli and Palestinian perceptions and the way in which the more extreme, utopian visions of both sides result in mutually destructive relations between them. The author finds that martyrs are not recruited by coercion, although obviously they are used for propaganda after the event. Instead, the lonely decision to be a martyr is taken by the individual, "in almost every case" against the wishes of family and friends.
The last section, while devoted to trans-national groups such as al-Qaeda, also addresses the whole spectrum of radicalisation. The encounter of Islam with "modernity" (Western consumerism, greater sexual freedoms, and the anonymity, crime and chaos of city life), a theme never far away in this book, is explored from the viewpoint of Muslim immigrants living in Western societies. The vast majority accept their host countries' societies and live at peace, often enduring economic marginalization or prejudice. A tiny minority however, often well-educated, develop an implacable view of Western society as defiling and hostile to Islam.
This book steers away from political comment; a proposition such as "in Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine .. an alliance of of Christians and Jews has put Islam in a position which can only lead to jihad", is left to the reader to judge. Instead, it offers a searching analysis of the social phenomena and the psychological mechanisms at work. Some of the language is a little abstruse and theoretical, but the book rewards perseverance. It is also helpfully divided into subsections between one and a 10-15 pages in length, many of which can be read and pondered stand-alone. My one criticism is that there are few direct quotations from the testimonies of martyrs and radicals.

Solid work on suicide terrorism

The purpose of this book is to explore suicide terrorism in the latter part of the 20th century and the early 21st century.
In the 1980s, Hezbollah used this tactic in Lebanon--with spectacular results.
As the Preface remarks (page xv): "Suicide bombing is the signature tactic of the fourth or 'religious wave' of modern terrorism, a wave that began with the Iranian Revolution of 1979."
The chapters in this edited volume deal with a variety of key issues:
1. The nature of suicide terrorism;
2. Motivations for suicide terrorism;
3. Islam and Al Qaeda;
4. Osama bin Laden.
The Introduction does a nice job of laying out what is at stake in this volume. It concludes by noting that (page 11): "In summary, the characteristics of suicide attacks which have been discussed point to the fact that, in contrast to common belief, suicide attacks are varied and change from region to region and during different time periods."
A good edited volume that gets one to thinking about the issues involved with suicide terrorism.

My only and biggest disappointment in the book is the abrupt ending of her book. She emphasizes the Twelve Step Recovery Process to be the best way to over come Shame. Her other fault is that she gives religion a bad rap.
Overall, this book does a fantastic job at describing shame and its origins, however, the ending is like some said, "Hurry up, this book needs to go to printing.
I would love the author to revise this book and offer other alternatives. However, as I already wrote, If some one wants to understand the problem of shame, this is a great start. She even showed the flaws in the infamous author Bradshaw's theories about shame. Bradshaw missed the mark. To understand the flaws in Bradshaw's Healing the Shame is worth every penny and more on this book.
Bradshaw is seen on PBS as the great High Priest of emotional Education. Read this book: "Shame: Spiritual Suicide" and you will at least understand the problem. Reading Bradshaw is like going fishing in the Hudson River. First of all, the Hudson is polluted and if you catch any fish, you can't eat it. If you do eat the fish, you will get sick.
I implore author Vicki Underland-Rosow, Ph.D. to take another shot and revise this book adding other alternatives to dealing with shame in addition to the twelve steps.
In short, the best pieces of information I learned from this book is that shame is a learned behavior; it is not a natural emotion. Shame is from the outside. I would not know shame unless someone instilled it in me. We were not born with shame.
