Very unique and interesting...

A unique and interesting read. This is the second of a trilogy that was never completed as the author died under tragic circumstances shortly after the publication of this book. The story stands well on it's own with a powerful message. This is Christian fiction that could be categorized as apocalyptical but it would appeal to the non-religious crowd. This is a compelling and timely story of teenage love, sinister supernatural forces and guardian angels. The main character's soul hangs in the balance as good and evil literally battle for influence in her life. The message is not subtle as the author gives his interpretation of the eternal consequences of committing suicide. It would definitely make me think twice. The story is slightly darker than the Left Behind series but it would appeal to the same type. Additionally it provides an important message for impressionable kids and the difficulties they face today. Recommended for a good read.

Very fine technical work.

Review Date: 2001-07-11
This is an important technical work for anyone concerned with Attention Deficit Disorder. While not ideal for those without advanced degrees, parents and adults in an ADHD system may find it worth their while to work through the highly specialized language. The articles assess from different scientific perspectives the trajectory of stimulant medication. While priced very fairly given its highly technical content, ADHD support groups maybe able to share the cost and the book. Members within the group could select a chapter, and then present it to their group. Most of the articles contain at least a few sections that will be understandable to non-scientists. Such a process could improve physician patient communication about the medication. Detractors of stimulant medication have to come to grips with the enormous relief that these medications provide for adults and children. While the specific locations and dynamics of the epenephrine and dopamine interactions remain shrouded, the clinical evidence overwhelming attested to the efficacy of stimulant medication. Until detractors can produce similar empirical data, resources have to be allocated to treatments that actually work. The book's purpose is to bring together the best and most current data available as a way of supporting and furthering pharmaceutical research. In this purpose the editor's and contributor's reveals science at its best, methodically navigating a dense forest of dimly understood variables in an attempt to relieve human suffering and push back the boundaries of ignorance. They echo our ancestors who learned to harness fire.

Dr. Cahn has deftly assembled a comprehensive history of French thought on the complex subject of suicide. The text is richly footnoted and Dr. Cahn has crafted a sweeping overview of the subject by including the most important thinkers of the time period. This is a welcome contribution to literature on the subject, and is a notable achievement

Appraisals receveid for the book "Suicide in Schizophrenia" by Tatarelli, Pompili, Girardi, eds.

Review Date: 2007-07-30
One almost imagines hearing a great sucking sound of wind caused by massive withdrawal of interest in the clinical care of schizophrenic patients generally, but of suicidal schizophrenic patients in particular. Schizophrenics have been neurobiologized. Psychotherapy for schizophrenic patients has largely been abandoned, though its usefulness, especially when accompanied by good drug management, cannot be questioned. This excellent book is a breeze blowing in the opposite direction, calling our attention to a vast segment of suffering patients, bringing a distillation of excellent basic information clinicians need to help them. There is really no other book like it available, and the authors who write in it represent a true international consensus. Do not let it pass you by.

"Tatarelli, Pompili and Girardi provide an important contribution to suicidology. Their book is a goldmine for anyone involved in the prevention and understanding of suicide in schizophrenia".

Explores the origin of the condemnation of suicide

Review Date: 2001-03-18
In Suicide In The Middle Ages: The Curse On Self-Murder, Alexander Murray (Fellow and Praelector in Modern History, University College, Oxford) explores the origin of the condemnation of suicide in medieval Europe. This historical, 620-page, exhaustive survey (the second in a planned trilogy) explores medieval theology, law, mythology, and folklore regarding suicide. During an era when brutality, hardship, widespread disease, and superstition would offer a plentitude of reasons for not wanting to go on living, the ways the culture and community utilized to block the suicidal escape from such factors provides the history student with a unique and informative perspective on medieval religion. Also highly recommended for medieval studies collections and reading lists is Alexander Murray's Suicide In The Middle Ages: The Violent Against Themselves ...).

Suicide Intervention by Nurses
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-10
This book, the first to focus specifically on the role of nurses in suicide prevention, offers suggestions for reorganizing, managing and treating suicidal patients. Topics include the warning signs of suicide, a scale for assessing suicidal risk, innovative treatment approaches, suicidal colleagues, legal issues, and coping when suicide has occurred. Illustrative case histories are used throughout the book.

"Although numerous studies have indicated that about 75 percent of all suicidal people will visit a physician shortly before killing themselves, many doctors have been unable or unwilling to identify and respond effectively to their suicidal patients .... Because physicians have not been able to deal adequately with the suicidal population, the rationale for nurses taking action is apparent. If ths book enables nurses to more effectively recognize an incipient suicidal crisis, and to respond appropriately to it, then it will have served its purpose." - from the Preface

This book is very well done and very well documented. I am a BIG Kevorkian fan and believe in our right to die but this book had even me doubting some of the tactics allegedly used by Dr. Jack. Very compelling!
