This book is particularly interesting because it is probably the first book using what Sinclair later came to call 'psychogeography', an obsession he shares with his two close friends Michael Moorcock and Peter Ackroyd. Ackroyd made very free use of this book for his own splendid supernatural mystery story Hawkwsmoor and Moorcock introduces it, offering his own spin on the talented Mr Sinclair, as well as a few passing amiable swipes at half his famous contemporaries. Ackroyd's own riffs on Doctor Dee and a Platonic view of London (both from
Moorcock's own fantastic London novel Gloriana) find echoes in Sinclair's rich reflections on the underlying sense of a city's history reflected in her earth, stones and architecture, written when he was still working as a municipal gardener in London's East End. What Sinclair and Moorcock offer is the raw stuff of their own experience and observation whereas Ackroyd's views are slightly more academic, more enthusiastic at a distance than close-up. But all three writers should be read together to get a sense of another, very different, strand of English fiction which occasionally feeds the imaginations of people like Rushdie, Amis and Self but is hardly recognised in its own right as a vigorous and ultimately far richer canon. This kind of literature has little to do with the consumer age and is built solidly to last, I'd guess, a few centuries. Get this as an introduction to Sinclair and the school of writers he represents, but get Downriver to enjoy him at his finest.

Sociological Analysis of the Suicide Attacker
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-10
If there is a single point that defines the current political struggles in the world it is the Suicide Mission. This book consists of essays from a number of social scientists from around the world who have studied such missions.

The book begins with a discussion of the Japanese Kamikaze in World War II where some 3,000 Japanese army and navy pilots died trying to crash their planes into Allied ships during the later phase of the war.

After this chapter the book covers the more recent activities from self-immolations, as with the monks in VietNam to the activities by Palestinians, Al-queda and others. Finally there are several chapters on the more general aspects of suicide missions such as motivations, beliefs, the overall impact and so on.

The hardcover version of this book was published in early 2005. For this paperback version an additional Epilogue has been added that analyzes what has happened in the world since then. As the business analysis types would say, this has been a growth industry with 555 attacks in 2005.

If you're answering your call to counseling the needy, those in pain, the lost and forgotten then this book is for you. John White answers the many hidden questions about secular and Christian counseling. His style of writing is superb, easy to understand yet difficult since it's a complex subject. But the difficulty makes one yearn to search on, to continue helping those in need. I'm currently reading one of his other many books called Parents in Pain. He breaks down this complex and mystical service in bite size pieces easy to digest. Of coarse, with the grace of God John White has the ability show us how the mind and behavior can be changed. Outstanding book.

Beth Alderman's writing style is full of imagery and rich language to create a sensory response to each scene. There is a wonderful fluidity of thought, imagery, and emotions in this story. There is no getting stuck in one part of the book, laboring over lengthy descriptions and concepts. It is a nice and quick read. While this story raises many unresolved issues for mid-lifers, those in long-term marriages, long-term careers, those who might want to review their own place of being stuck, the author creates a hope and an alternative view. My emotions were touched within the first chapter of the book. I hope others enjoy it as much as I did.

The Memory Box is a good tool to use for children or adults who have experienced a loss or death in the family or someone close to them. When the book is combined with the actual process of making a memory box of the deceased, it is an excellent therapy tool.

Kathleen Sandefer tells the heartbreaking story of the most horrible experience a mother could go through~ having your child commit suicide and then finding him. But she tells more than most would be brave enough to share. She describes Weston's 14 years of life in the hope that a parent or teacher might be able to prevent another tragedy from occuring because of something she told about Weston's life.

After reading the candidly written information about medication, I was forever changed as a teacher in my attitude and views regarding children suffering with ADD.

This book exemplified my life and struggle with substance abuse and depression. I could see myself in some of the stories. It also encouraged me not to give up, that there was light at the end of the tunnel. I would recommend this to anyone who needs encouragement from depression and addiction. It also could be given as a gently nudge to someone who might be suffering but is in denial.

Linda Suzane's "The Murder Game" is a well written, tightly plotted whodunit that will leave the reader eager for the author's next book. The writing is first rate and the plot clever, with the best surprise twist of an ending.

Gwen Wilson, mystery author and the creator of murder mystery games, is hired by Lawrence Van Hise to create a game for the celebration of his 70th birthday. This isn't just another job for Gwen, but a return to the home where her mother was a housekeeper accused of a theft that led to her suicide. Gwen has never believed her mother capable of theft and she doesn't want to believe her capable of suicide. An invitation to become a part of the Van Hise household for even a short time gives her the opportunity to try and get at the truth of what happened. What she doesn't expect is to fall in love with Hunter Van Hise, the son or to end up a suspect when Lawrence Van Hise is murdered while his guests are playing the game Gwen created for his birthday. Proving her innocence and untangling the past takes all of Gwen's skill. How she does it will keep you reading.

To see THE MURDER GAME finally in print is very satisfying. I started out writing a romantic suspense on spec for Harlequin. They really liked my idea of a story centered around a murder mystery game designer and the game she was working on. But in the end, they said they liked it but the hero wasn't Harlequin enough. I'm not quite sure what they meant, except perhaps that I found myself unable to write the usual syrupy romance with the typical Alpha male and lots of mad passion. What I ended up with was more realistic, more of a mystery, but with a strong relationship between a man and a woman. I also really enjoyed sharing the detail of writing a murder mystery game. The process is very different than writing a novel and yet just as difficult. I should know, I have two KILLER INTERNATIONAL murder mystery games at www.host-party.com, the Internet's largest source of downloadable mystery games. And I am working on a third that is drawn from the pages THE MURDER GAME and will be available early 2009. To find out more, check out my website www.playmurder.com. If you are looking for a romance on the more realistic side or a good old fashioned mystery, I think you will enjoy THE MURDER GAME, at least I hope so.

This is an intriguing amateur sleuth tale

Review Date: 2008-11-08
Gwen Wilson travels to Mt. Tamalpais just north of San Francisco to create a murder mystery game based on her literary detective Adam Long for Lawrence Van Hise on his seventieth birthday. Gwen knows Lawrence because her mom worked for him two decades ago at his home Hillside Cottage as his housekeeper until he accused her of stealing a valuable jade statue. Soon afterward she and her mother left allegedly to take care of an ailing aunt but soon after the accused committed suicide.

While working on the game, Gwen, who believes no one will recognize her as that tweener child with a different surname, also plans to investigate the cold case theft as she rejects the notion her mom took it; she also has doubts that her mom took her own life. As she considers what Long would do next she digs deeper into the pasts of her mom and her client, his son Hunter offers to help. When she was younger she was attracted to Hunter and to her chagrin still is. At the night of the event, the guest of honor is found dead with Gwen as the only suspect.

This is an intriguing amateur sleuth tale as the heroine seeks closure with her mother's death and finally after years has the opportunity to try to prove someone else stole the statue as Gwen rejects the premise of her mom being a thief. Her use of Long as her "mentor" guide has been done before, but is refreshed with Gwen's bumbling efforts that only enhance her as the number one suspect. Readers who appreciate an engaging whodunit will enjoy this fun cozy as Gwen wonders if history is about to repeat itself.
