I'm currently working on a school-based suicide intervention program in pursuing my PhD degree in Mexico. Eventhough the book
covers most areas of interest in youth suicide there are only two chapters (the last two) dedicated to discussing possible
empirical guidelines for treating suicide attempters. Naturally, it IS precisely treatment and outcome research with these
adolescents that falls behind with what we currently know about teen suicide. Nevertheless, among the significant contributions
of the book (profiling youth at-risk and reviewing proximal and distal riks factors for suicide behavior) are the references
of scientific journal articles which I'm sure will be of great use to practitioners and grad students in the clinical psychology
field. Finally, the case study vignettes offer rich insight on this complex phenomena within a psychosocial perspective.

Death is a very difficult subject for many of us to think about, let alone read an in-depth book about its existential meaning
and the spiritual issues involved. I recently lost a dear friend, and I found the chapter, "Construction of Meaning in the
Face of Mortality" by Gloria Nouel, PhD, very comforting. Although she writes about the bereavement of women who lost their
children, I was able to hear Dr. Nouel's words speaking to my grief-stricken heart over the loss of a 62-year-old woman who
was my self-less and kind friend. Dr. Nouel also opens the door to reflections on our relationship with loved ones after their
leaving this plane of existence. This book will help you work through your grief, and learn how to create meaning when all
you are feeling is meaninglessness.

Dr. Jurich provides ways to start communicating effectively with teenagers, and practical suggestions on how to "reach" them
when on the edge. This is a "must read" for all helping professionals (and a `MUST' for students). The book provides systemic,
cognitive, and behavioral interventions to bring about positive outcomes in your work with struggling adolescents. The highlight
is helping suicidal adolescents, but I think the techniques and expertise offered in the book could be very valuable when
working with adolescents struggling from other problems as well. Great contribution to working with adolescent at risk. Lastly,
it's a great start if you struggle understanding adolescents, yet it is complex enough that it provides great tips and insight
for professionals who might have experience working with adolescent. Highly recommended.

Written by a humanistic based clinician, this is the best conceptualization of how and why suicide bombing persists. Charny
begins with an indictment of the PC psychiatric community which gives everything political a pass. And his message is simple:
normal people want to live. He understands pathology even if it hides behind religion or politics and calls for a world wide
campaign for life. Makes Robert Pape's "its the occupation, stupid" look silly by comparison as Muslim on Muslim attacks continue.
--A good solid conceptualization.

This is my favorite book by Julian Thompson, even beating out Grounding of Group 6 for that honor! His characters are always
unique and eccentric, like most real teens in the real world. You can never look at life the same way again after reading
one of his titles. You won't be sorry if you buy this book-it's fantastic!

A Must-Read on the Dangers of Death Fundamentalism

This newly revised and updated edition of Forced Exit provides a gripping overview and analysis of the assisted suicide and
euthanasia movement and the threat it poses to human dignity and human equality. Author Wesley J. Smith lays out the chilling
intellectual underpinnings of a movement that asserts there is such a thing as human life unworthy of life--and that other
humans or "experts" should be called upon to determine whose life satisfies the criteria for continued existence. Smith gives
readers clear and straightforward analysis of the important issues at stake and the implications for the most vulnerable among
us.
Smith persuasively shows that he basic ideals that the assisted suicide/euthanasia movement hope to carve into federal and state laws through litigation and legislation are detrimental to the equality-of-life ethic that has long been recognized in this nation. In Forced Exit, Smith gives readers a strong defense of that important ethic. That ethic makes clear that the elderly, the sick and the disabled have as much importance, dignity, and worth than the young and the healthy.
Importantly, Smith provides solutions to the dilemmas faced by patients at life's so-called margins. Steps must be taken to educate doctors about how to recognize depression in patients and that depression must be treated. Current medical practice must place greater emphasis upon pain control, since palliative measures can significantly reduce--if not eliminate--the physical pain felt by many patients who have serious injuries or illness.
The false notion that assisted suicide somehow furthers patient autonomy is exploded by Smith. Through principled analysis and through countless concrete case studies, he demonstrates that the wishes of the sick, elderly, and disabled are all too often given short or ignored when it comes to important medical decisions. Smith describes the crucial distinction between the right to refuse unwanted life-saving medical procedures and the so-called "right to die"--proactive measures specifically intended to end life. Also, Smith deftly explains how administering food and water to patients is separate and distinct from medical measures.
Forced Exit receives my strongest recommendation.

to why this happen to your child. The author helped me realize that I was not alone in my feelings and thoughts. Very helpful
book.

The Chrysalis Education 'Saying Goodbye to ' series should be a cornerstone of any elementary-grade school library that includes
self-help titles: Saying Goodbye To A Friend answers common kids' questions on the bereavement process, and tailors its series
to specific events. Saying Goodbye To A Friend covers everything from illness and dying to the aftermath of feeling guilty,
scared, sad, and lonely. Tips on how to be a friend during an illness, and how to say goodbye and remember the friend after
death, are included along with plenty of color photos of kids. A touching tribute.

This book is awesome! My two year old is hearing impaired and I ordered most of the books in this series. I am impressed with
the the way the author and illustrators have put this book together. It is the easiest book I have found to teach not only
myself and my daughter sign, but also for my other school aged children to learn as well. I highly reccommend this book for
anyone who wishes to learn sign.
