I am an elementary school counselor. This is an excellent book to share with children who are (grieving) missing a parent because of divorce, deployment, or death. Wonderful pictures and text. A peaceful, gentle read.

IF YOU LISTEN...wow, that title get's attention. I have so much to share with/teach my child and this book's title is perfect to whisper to her and get her in the mood to LISTEN. "How do you know if someone far away is loving you?" a little girl asked her mother. Truth is, we all ask ourselves this with so many family/friends over the miles. The mother answers in a way that is very interesting and beautiful with simple, yet great descriptive writing that pulls the reader into the pictures and beyond..."You have to stop when you're lonely and listen," said her mother....If you listen hard you'll feel someone far away sending love to you." After listening to her mother's examples, the little girl sits outside under a clear blue sky. "One bird circled and circled overhead. She watched until he flew away." There is so much more I'd like to say but get this book and share it with your child and encourage them to become listeners. Listening is something that we never "graduate" from. It is a continuous learning experience and more importantly, a gift of love and respect to the speaker.

I AM NOT FINISH READING THIS EXCELLANT NOVEL, BUT I HAD TO MAKE A COMMENT. I LIKE THE BEGINNING OF THIS NOVEL WITH JANET IN THE SUICIDE WARD, THAT MAKE THE BOOK REALLY INTERESTING WONDERING HOW DID JANET GET TO THAT POINT IN HER LIFE. WITH THIS BEGINNING YOU CAN'T HELP BUT TO READ ON. THE AUTHOR MAKE YOU REALLY FEEL WHAT JANET IS FEELING AND MY HEART GOES OUT TO HER. EVERY CHANCE I GET I READ THIS NOVEL BECAUSE I CAN HARDLY WAIT TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS TO JANET AT THE END. JANET SEEM TO BE A SAD AND PITIFUL WOMAN AND I KEEP THINKING ABOUT HER AND I FEEL SO SORRY FOR HER. BOICE ALLEN CAN REALLY MAKE YOU FEEL WHAT THE CHARACTERS FEEL. BOICE ALLEN HAS DONE IT AGAIN. LIKE DAUGHTERS OF A MOTHER HE MAKES HIS READERS FEEL AS THOUGH THEY ARE INVOLVED SOME HOW WITH THE CHARACTERS.

The old saying "Don't judge a book by its cover" is definitely true in the case of "Job Search Bloopers" by Laura DeCarlo and Susan Guarneri. When I first viewed the book on the shelf, the cartoon cover and fun title led me to believe that I'd be reading fluffy, turn-the-page quickly anecdotes from a series of unfortunate job seekers--something like the "Darwin Awards" of the careers industry.

What I wasn't prepared for, was that this content-rich book was going to be a must read for all job seekers. Based on numerous true-to-life examples from professional resume writing members of Career Directors International, this book covers everything from cover letter casualties, resume writing roadblocks, interview inadequacies and more...in fact, every part of the job search experience where something can go wrong (and has) is covered.

Just pointing out mistakes made by job seekers is only part of the book and this is where the nuggets of gold can be found as the authors excel in creating new strategies so that job seekers can either overcome, or hopefully never have to face, these self-sabotaging stumbles.

The strategies are smart, intelligent and commonsense and you can either read from beginning-to-end or you can choose individual chapters to source information that suits your situation. If there is one thing I have learned in life, it is when one person has a disappointing experience, he or she is not the only one! You can learn from the mistakes of others in an entertaining way, while at the same time finding out what to do to resolve it, or do it better next time.

Truly a must-have in the library of job seekers globally.

Quick and fun read for job seekers!

This book offers practical advice for the job seeker. Whether you are a recent grad or more seasoned professional, you'll find tips to improve your resume, your interviewing, and your follow-up after the interview. So many of my clients struggle with the follow-up process. Should I call...should I email...use a handwritten note or a formal letter? Read the book to find the answer. :)

What makes the book fun is the authors first share an amusing blooper tale. They follow with straight-forward strategies for success.

As a professional resume writer with 9 years of experience, I recommend this book to my clients. I preview lots of books for my clients and this one compelled me to write a recommendation.

Last Rights is a comprehensive and insightful examination of the right to die movement in the United States and around the world. Filled with personal details not found in other books. Not concerned with merely repeating "politically correct" versions of events. It is a valuable new addition to "end-of-life" literature.

Unflinching, sympathetic, beautifully written

This detailed look at the right-to-die movement is as impressive for its compassion as it is for its scope. As medical advances offer the possibility of longer life even in the shadow of grave illness, questions about patients' choices and quality of life become more and more relevant to all of us. Woodman has done her homework and summarizes the principle viewpoints concisely -- and always with deep sympathy both for the dying and their care-givers.

This book is for anyone who wants to know what it like to die! I read this book and I am forever changed. The story is written from the prospective of a young man who committed suicide. After reading this, I feel what it may mean to be "dead". Michael has such a graceful way with his words, and phrases. He clearly is conveying his life on the other side.
It is such a life changing book.

This story caught my interest in the first few paragraphs and I simply could not put it down until I finished it. It is very evocative of the era and the references to the aftereffects of "The Great War" are very similar to the stories I was told by my great uncles who lived through it.
The characters are well developed and very believable and sympathetic.
This book is as good as any from the masters of the genre.

entertaining historical mystery

Review Date: 2008-07-03
In 1923, mystery writer Jack Haldean attends the Silver Wedding Anniversary gala of his Aunt Alice and Uncle Philip at their country manor Hesperus. However the fete is dampened by the apparent suicide of Jack's friend Tim Preston. In financial trouble Tim served as secretary to detestable haughty Lord Lyvenden; a nouveau riche who paid for his peerage and a proper wife from his humongous munitions manufacturing profits although business has slowed since the war ended.

Although everyone else assumes suicide, Jack has doubts that quickly become validated when Lyvenden is found dead with Jack's friend Arthur Stanton standing by the corpse. Jack investigates, but Stanton is gone. Meanwhile Jack's cousin Isabelle, engaged to wealthy banker Malcolm Smith-Fennimore, insists her beloved Stanton is innocent; and Lyvenden's wife Lady Harriet relishes her new status of wealthy widow. Throw in some angry Russians seeking stolen Czarist gold and Jack knows Superintendent Ashley has a difficult murder investigation to conduct.

Jack's back (see A FETE WORSE THAN DEATH) in this entertaining historical mystery. The story line is fun to follow as the manor murder mystery is a combination investigative tale and a deep somewhat comedic (the humor feels flat and out of place) look at the post WWI fall of the aristocracy still cling to their estates even if they cannot afford them. The hero is terrific as he makes inquiries as if he is writing a novel, but alienates everyone. Readers will enjoy this fine period piece reminiscent of Carola Dunn's Daisy Dalrymple mysteries.

As a clinican and also a short-term learner in Barlow's center, I've witnessed how the panic control therapy has been tested vigorously in the centre, and also saw how the client had been benefitted from the panic control therapy. This workbook, together with the therapist's handbook, can give the reader essential guideline in using PCT for panic patients. I've made a lot of reference to this in treating panic patients in my clinical setting.

An outstanding collection of vignettes that can be read not only by those in the health care professions, but also by those who just have questions about how physicians and clients can communicate around sensitive issues. I have used it as a text for nursing students with great success and shared it with friends diagnosed with a serious illness. I strongly recommend it for anyone who is concerned about quality of life at the end of life

Excellent series of vignettes about compassion for the dying

Review Date: 1998-07-22
Dr. Quill is best known for his infamous "Diane" who chose to end her life in a unorthodox way. Dr. Quill does not agree with physician assisted suicide, however, he does believe that compassion in dying and allowing one to make their own destiny in the face of uncontrollable pain will alleviate much suffering. The most common reason for suicide in those with medical conditions that are incurable are is they want to die in control and without pain. It is possible with the right medical care and if it results in hastening ones death...so be it. Dr. Kevorkian uses an unorthodox procedure that at times is barbaric. Dr. Quill is one who will help you and make you comfortable. He shares his experiences with several of his patients in a way that is humane and loving.

Complex Human Characters
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-05-26
This novel should be getting a lot of attention. I don't understand why it isn't. Unlike so many novels, the characters in this book are as complex as anyone you might know. The past and the present sit on the characters' shoulders, each pressing powerfully - often in opposite directions. This is a remarkable book, understated and yet somehow lush. In the hands of most authors it would turn sentimental, but Hammond scrupulously avoids sentimentality and finds instead a dark, compelling, and powerfully human reality.

I'm quite surprised there are no other reviews of this book. I stumbled upon this book accidentally and after opening to the first page, voraciously read it, in record speed. Hammond leads you through this troubled and profound time for Theo with great skill. The writing is fluid and descriptive and often humorous, yet leaves you wondering at the same time. The book is not ABOUT suicide, but rather the aftermath of a difficult, but not insurmountable, childhood. It is not a "Poor-me,-I-had-a-bad-childhood" book, but rather a success story of discovering, understanding and then attempting to overcome "bad things" in your past. As with a lot of books, the end came too quickly and I wanted more.

I thought the book was wonderful. It dealt with suicide in a way that allowed children to read and understand it. It was also interesting to read for a person of my age, and I am a high school senior. I still love the book. I've had it since I was 8 years old. I love it and would recomend it to anyone.

Not just for children

Review Date: 2001-06-10
While this is marketed as a book for children, it is a brilliant study in friendship, suicide and art - a book that easily enjoyed by adults as well. The premise is that an eleven year old boy finds his adult friend dead - he hears/has heard from his friends tales of political imprisonment, of a refound first love, and of art. Out of this he tries to sort out the "why" of his "Friend the Artist's" death.

This exploration is carried out with brillant images - images of the emotional content of colors, dream images of three people sharing a continuous costume, and the boy's litany of "why's". This exploration has no missteps - it is an excellent piece of writing.
