there is definitely a playfulness about this book, but its not without balance and perspective. Nothing here takes TONS of time, but everything DOES take focus, will, and good intention. I like the overall tone that honors our busy lifestyle while recognizing that many people want "a little more"...

Fun to read!

This little book definitely has an attitude. However, it's witty, light-hearted, and fun to read like a dirty little book. It touches on a variety of pagan topics but not into any tremendous detail...just right, just enough to spark your own creativity. It covers non-complicated oil combos, potpourri, incense & candle making, touch of divination, recipes, spells. One spell that intrigues me is the spell to keep negativity out of your workspace...keeping negative coworkers away! It's a great little book of inspiration.

Mama Elizabeti

While I enjoyed the entire Elizabeti series, this one stands out for its depiction of sibling love. While Elizabeti finds her young brother Obedi to be a handful, her love for him is apparent. The book is good-humored and presents a happy, loving family.

Reading Strategy and Multi Cultural

After reading Mama Elizabeti by Stephanie Stuve-Bodeen, it appears that in this book the author's shares her knowledge as well as her experience from her days in the Peace Corps. The author also demonstrates the connection with a reading strategy known as text to world. Using this strategy she shows that there are similarities from other cultures of the world to our own. I recommend that this book be used as an excellent example to demonstrate how children throughout the world help their parents and find that growing up is part of a continuing learning experience. The book explains to children that as they grow up and learn, they will find not only joy and gratification in helping their parents and siblings, but they will also become aware that they do not need to give up their childhood pleasures and experiences. The book gives the reader the feeling that each person will find the time to enjoy things from the past, present, and future. It is a book that might be shared between parent and child, or in a classroom setting. It is a wonderful example of multicultural reading. I would also highly recommend this book to be used to model as well as be a starting point for discussion of the reading strategy: text to world. It is often difficult to find books that help teachers teach both multicultural experiences and strategies, this book is an example of both.

When Senator Jeff Dylan passes away, Nick finds himself mourning not the memory of his father, but the knowledge of his father's lifelong disappointment in him, as well as the relationship they never had. Although he'd never been the son his mother wanted either, Nick still finds himself drawn to her side when he hears reports of brandy and sleeping pills. He moves back into his father's house to care for his mother, who had never gotten the fact that she was Jeff's housemaid until he got her pregnant. Then Nick learns that Jeff's will demands that his son marry for love within a year and live in the family home for the first year of the marriage.

The sight of the Atherton house at foot of his family's estate always produces pangs of helpless guilt in Nick. Derelict and forgotten, the Federation era house once known as The Oaks slowly decays. Jeff only bought the mortgage and closed on it to wound the Arthertons. It was Jeff's way to take vengeance on the man who'd married Sylvia Atherton, the only woman he had ever loved. Nick sees Sylvia's daughter at the way to right the past. In return for marriage, he'll give The Oaks back to Clair.

Their family history seems an insurmountable barrier between them. His father the Senator defines Nick's identity to their small town, and no one seems to understand that his name has nothing to do with who he really is. They can't talk about the things that really matter without inflicting pain. Coming from a loving family, Clair Atherton can't possibly understand how his existence embarrassed his mother Leota and father Jeff. Yet their shared pain in the past seems to connect Nick and Clair in the most unlikely way.

Leota and Clair are both strong, but neither seems to be able to use it to benefit others without Nick's delicate influence. His delicate determination to love them offers a bright future if only both women will accept themselves and the love he offers. Instead, it seems Leota is determined to get lost in her jealousy of the younger woman, to destroy rather than to build a future. She becomes a mother on a mission, determined to free her son from the Atherton woman. Nothing would hurt her more than to let Sylvia Artherton's daughter win.

Anna Adams skillfully writes in a distinctly crisp, sharp tone that uniquely reflects the tension between her characters, at times relaxing into a softer prose that reflects the emotions beneath the tension. The brittle tension periodically allows the glow of passion and love to shine through like sunlight on a cloudy day, lending Adams' prose a polish and sophistication quite rare in genre romance. Very highly recommended.

Strong, Crisp Writing Makes this Story Sparkle

Anna Adams has crafted a masterful story about human emotions in THE MARRIAGE CONTRACT.

Nick Dylan weds Clair Atherton in a marriage of convenience--he fulfills a stipulation in his father's will, and Clair gets her beloved Federal era house back. All they have to do is look convincingly married for one year. Trouble is, Nick's father was the one who who repossessed Clair's parents' home.

Nick is not like his father, but can he make prickly Clair understand? And can he make his vengeful mother love him as a son?

Strong emotions and strong reasons for those emotions are at the heart of this complex story about two needy people. Well-drawn characters and a great page-turning plot make this a book not to be missed.

TEN out of TEN! A FANTASTIC ESCAPADE FROM DAVE STONE

First off, the book is by Dave Stone. If you're really curious to know, Kate Orman came up with the title. And the cover shown here is not the cover that made it onto the book. Besides not having Kate's name on it. Anyway the book is a *joy* after some pretty turgid recent entries in the New Adventure series. Stone's at his most insane, while managing to keep a tentacle or two on solid ground: basically throwing in all the nuttiness and irrelevance we've come to expect, but giving us a straightforward adventure yarn which twists one's brain in directions previously unexplored. Pure brain candy! Magical! Tons o' fun! But Wolesey fans remember, Dave Stone hates cats!

This is a downright clever book. To appreciate it more, if you aren't familiar with the term "Mary-Sue," search the Internet for "Mary-Sue Litmus Test." Then consider the nameless first-person narrator. Writer-to-writer meta-humor aside, if you enjoyed The Hitchhiker's Guide... or Bill, the Galactic Hero, you'll enjoy this book too. And, no, it may be a "New Adventures" book, but it's pretty much Dr. Who free, which is fine by me. :)

This is another fine book from Sharon Harlow. She has such a way for romance. This story opens when Jessie Monroe is on her way (with her children) to see her brother, at McKinnon Ranch, where he works. She is widowed and coming to him for some help. When she gets there she finds that her brother has been fired but Ty McKinnon said he thought his brother Cade was looking for a cook/housekeeper. She decides to take the job. The moment that Cade and Jessie meet they are attracted. You later find out why her brother was fired. It has to do with cattle rustling and a couple of shady characters. I won't say anymore because I don't want to give it away. If you like a good old fashioned romantic page turner... this is the book for you. I would give it more than 5 stars if I could. Sharon's characters are moral yet not unbelievable. Sharon...another GREAT book. I can't wait for the next one. This is staying on my shelf for a re-read. Another great one by Sharon is For Love of Anna.

The Lee Kwan Yew that very few Singaporeans know about!
Helpful Votes: 19 out of 21 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-23
I was fortunate enough to locate the Malaysian edition of this fascinating book while I was visiting Malacca, Malaysia this past summer. Francis Seow's 'The Media Enthralled : Singapore Revisited' paints a very bleak picture of the government controlled press and the media in this authoritarian island-state. While on a trip to Singapore, I made enquiries about purchasing a copy of this book, but I was told by all the book-stores in Singapore that it was unavailable for sale or special order! Today, Lee Kwan Yew is a leader that is still feared by the state, and bookstores in Singapore do not want to risk incurring the wrath of Harry by carrying books that are highly critical of him. The fact that I had to purchase this book from Malaysia, is a good case in point of how tightly controlled this country has become. This excellent book chronicles the Singapore press from it's humble but independent beginnings to how Lee Kwan Yew turned it into the rag of his People's Action Party. A fascinating read for anyone interested in Singapore, Lee Kwan Yew, and the secret behind this Asian Miracle! One of Lee's 'secret-ingredients' for Singapore's success is to suppress the press!

A case study of tyranny

Mr Seow's book is to date the only piece of research that I know which does an indepth study of a much misunderstood state apparatus. The singaporean government to date has been lavished with praise from most quarters, mainly due to misinformation on their part. Seow's book shows how Lee Kuan Yew pseudo-democratic state hides behind a veneer of democratic respectability. How the press and media is controlled by the state and how all independent avenues are banned. He also shows how government instrumentalities are used to police its hegemony on its behalf. An excellent study of deceit. A great study of Lee Kuan Yew.
