As an IT student, I occasionally run into material that I find stale, boring, and overwhelming. This book isn't like that. I am able to review study material that is not only useful, but fun to read! You can't go wrong with this book, it is a valuable resource to learning OSs and what makes them tick.

Excellent add on for the A+ study guide.

Looking for the A+ certification? As you know this certification has 2 exams, I for hardware and 1 for the Operating systems. This book is a great prep tool for the OS section as it covers several key operating systems and few that aren't on the exam.

The book starts off with a hardware overview, which is very helpful in the understanding of software. Then you deal with the older operating systems like Windows 3.X and DOS, this is a nice foundation to learn the roots of the operating system.

Then comes NT, 2000, XP and there is even section for the MAC OS and Linux group. What I liked about this book was the exercises and labs; they would prove to very helpful in understanding certain concepts.

About the only thing missing is cds with evaluation copies of the operating system(s), in case you don't have access to them. Overall this book is a great compliment to the Mike Meyers All in One A+ Study Guide. As an Instructor, this book becomes a valuable add on to the curriculum.

In this book, you learn how to install, configure and troubleshoot, and includes coverage of networking. Read this and you're on your way to an A+ certfication not to mention a desktop support or help desk position. It's a beautifully designed book.

Finally! A great book to help parents talk to kids. I bought copies for all my sisters with children! The book is nicely designed... it doesn't read like a textbook... and has practical knowledge and suggestions. It's really a great aid for parents - not a 'tell you how to raise your kids' lecture. The illustrated activities are a great way to break the ice with your kids!

Rarely do I make an effort to recommend a book, but this is one all parents should read. I have a teenage boy and I was having some difficulty communicating with him about what's been going on in the news...school shootings, hate crimes, etc. A friend told me about this book and it has really helped me find a constructive way to talk to my kid. Lots of great insight, lots of great scenarios, lots of useful tips on how I can be a more effective parent. I have already told a number of my friends about it and hope they will find it as useful as I did. Go get it now.

Step by step strategies in clear language that get to some essential practical techniques to carry on a dialog about violence. As a parent I know it can be difficult to understand how to start to talk with children to get through to them. This book offers useful variations. When all else fails, read the manual!

Thanks to Dominic Cappello for the cool coaster that came with my copy!

He has earned some of the top honors in all of journalism. If you want to learn how to report live, buy it. If you want to get better at live, buy it. There is no other book like it! It is an easy read that hits every nail right on the head.

This is a great resource for aspiring reporters and for those who have been in the business for just a couplle of years. Mr. Arya presents a straight forward - honest look at what it takes to be a good live reporter in a very difficult field. The tips are very valuable to students and those just starting out in this field. They are also good to those who are working in live television but who are uncomfortable with the live presentation. This is a nice resource for all live reporters - a reminder of what it takes to make it work successfully.

Exelente.

Business news is hot news!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-02
Once a stodgy and sleepy thing, today's business news media is anything but fueled by a national obsession for investing. Business news has become the hottest media sector in America and the world. Which is wonderful news for companies that can get their intended message across, and seriously bad news for those that can't. They risk being ignored, misrepresented, or-worst of all-left vulnerable to damaging hearsay and rumour.

The rise of the business news media, the emergence of the consumer-investor, and the technological developments that have opened up the world into a 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week superstore of information and opinion have occurred almost overnight. So swift are the changes that even companies considered to be leaders in communications are scrambling to keep up. Consumers of news, too, are overwhelmed with information overload, uncertain about what's reliable and what's not. And yes, even the media are having difficulty keeping up with its own growth in terms of finding talent to keep the big new media pipeline full of credible and useful information and insight. Everyone on all sides of the new media equation is struggling to keep pace.

This book is for those who want to understand more about the increasing dynamic relationship between companies and the news media that covers them. A company that blames the news media for creating or contributing to its problems is misleading itself. Similarly, a reporter who blames a company for trying to promote or protect itself through public relations-and thereby somehow "obscuring truth"-is failing to understand that a company's main reasons for being are to survive and succeed, not cater to the news media's agenda.

In between what a company wants and what a reporter wants lies the issue that is the focus of this book. It is, quite simply, a knowledge gap. Many companies, particularly young ones, don't know how to tell their stories to the media properly. Many reporters, particularly those new to the business beat, don't know enough about the complexities of business to make sense of information and give it meaningful insight for their audiences. Complicating the process is technology, which gives both sides the false impression that the ability to move more and more information around the world 24 hours a day is useful. Without context, this information overload is far from useful-it is downright confusing. Add to this a growing hunger for insight, not just information, from a new generation of consumer-investors who are taking more responsibility for their financial futures, and the knowledge gap becomes even wider.

Companies that understand the knowledge gap and take steps to close it will see benefits. Most established companies that have been around the media for some time get the point. But many young, small companies, particularly those that are newly public, may not have caught on the issue. They haven't learned how to promote or protect themselves. It is these companies, especially, and the executives who run them, that this book is directed.

If you manage a company, whether small, medium, or large, there are a couple of things you need to do to make sure the gap between what you do know and what you don't know doesn't get wider. Because if it does, the consequences can be serious. And in an environment where the media are a determining factor in the success or failure of your company's reputation, you cannot afford to ignore what's going on.

First, make sure you incorporate communications, particularly media relations, into your strategic business plan. Communications should be as important as manufacturing, sales, and distribution. Through communications, including many of the aspects covered in this book, you can stay plugged in. When done properly, communications can be an excellent way to get your messages out and to receive information and insight from the environment in which you do business. A communications effort does not need to be elaborate. But you must get started. You must be part of this new environment. Every day you lose, you fall further behind.

Second, get professional communications help if you don't already have it. Consider good communications and relationships with the media to be as serious an issue as any other in your business. Just as you wouldn't think of attempting a merger or acquisition without an investment bank, or making a substantial investment for your company without a financial advisor, or tackle a serious legal issue without lawyers, you cannot face the media without the help of Public Relations professionals. The media is a specialized world that requires specialists to manage on your behalf. A reliable public relations agency or consultant can put together an effective plan, including proactive, reactive, and crisis elements, at a relatively modest cost.

In a nutshell, Total Exposure is the first book to offer senior executives and Public Relations professionals both a clear understanding of the transformation of business journalism and practical guidelines on strategically managing their company's image in this new environment. It explains how to:

* avoid overexposure by targeting credible journalists and media forums * find the right spokespeople and train them to say the right things * think like a reporter, understanding story angles and agendas, and more

With the exception of the introductory chapter, each of the 12 chapters of this book is summarized in bullet form at the end in a `Summary of Trends' section and a `Lessons for Companies' section.

"Touch the Ocean" has been a wonderful book to introduce my clients to the craniosacral work I practice. I truly believe the key to living a happier life is being able to release the emotional trauma that gets locked into our body. There is always a copy of "Touch the Ocean" to share with all my clients. It is a powerful testimonial to how powerful this work can be.

An intimate look into the life of the author and how healing became his life's work. Some profound observations about the strength of our emotions and their impact on the world around us. Not everyone will embrace James' conclusions. But many original thinkers have been dismissed by their peers only to be validated by subsequent generations.

James Nemec gives us a comprehensive portrayal of how our emotions both individually and collectively affect our bodies and that of nature around the world. Mr. Nemec dicusses his methods during craniosacral therapy sessions which help us as individuals release our emotions physically. He also teaches us how our actions and reactions to world events can also cause an effect in nature and its behavior to our world environment.
I believe this book, in all its simplicity, serves as a guide and as a gentle reminder to all of us on how the principles of thought and emotion can manifest.

Excellent classic that is still insightful in 2004
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-05
This book is a classic. In the foreword to the 1986 edition, psychiatrist Jean Baker Miller mentioned her reasons for writing this groundbreaking book that was first published in 1976. First, in her work with women, she noticed that women had psychological strengths that they didn't seem to recognize or appreciate. Second, she was concerned that the model of the "new" woman seemed to be based on a male model, as if that were the only model of a complete person. Miller's goal was to "recognize, re-define and understand the day-to-day experience of women and to show how the mental and emotional lives of individual women reflect the social and political system" (back cover). She highlighted the need for change by describing the psychological damage that can result from unequal status and power in relationships. Although Miller focused on male and female relationships, the same outcome occurs whenever one or more groups are considered subordinate to the dominant group(s) because of such differences as race, sex, class, nationality, or religion; everyone involved is hurt by the inability to be authentic and complete. I appreciated her even-handed and realistic approach to differences: "Differences are a source of strength for each of us-so long as they are not used against us" (p. 136). Almost 30 years later, this landmark work continues to illuminate the problems caused by unequal relationships and opportunities for growth, which could explain why it can still be found in most bookstores.

Allowed more insights into myself than any other book.

Jean Baker Miller has done a magnificient job of illustrating major developmental issues for men and women. The title is deceiving, because it doesn't express the power and depth of her thinking as it applies to both genders.

A major contribution, by the author, is her recognition of the roles of dominants and subordinates. This phenomenon appears in almost all aspects of our lives. People in either role learn, the important concept is to understand what they learn. Jean Baker Miller focused on the role of men and women as they fulfill this dominant, subordinate relationship and the learning that stems from these roles.

When I read her book it was like I was standing in front of a full-length mirror that reflected a picture of my emotional state. I was able to see that my emotional state was half empty. My feminine qualities had been forced from my being, and I was unhappily overrun by my masculine self. Her book allowed me a map from which to start to reintegrate the feminine into my being. It allowed me to cry for the isolation of my masculine self and welcome the strength of my feminine. The reflections I received helped me rearrange my values to allow myself to be both empathetic and strong. In one sense it allowed me to understand my own intelligence. I defined my intelligence as the energy created by the unbroken path between my heart and mind. Intelligence is the product of this synergistic connection. When this connection is blocked or broken my intelligence is not in force.

My work with leaders in organizations is strongly influenced by the discoveries I made will reading this book. I hope you take the time to reflect on these difficult, but crucial issues.

a timeless classic about dominant/subordinate relationships
Helpful Votes: 27 out of 28 total.
Review Date: 1998-08-06
This small and important book gives a timeless and cogent description of the dynamics between dominants and subordinates. Though the examples are specific to the relationships between men and women, the model offered stands up in an examination of dominant/subordinate relationships between any two groups or individuals. I discovered my own relationship with my sister (and vestiges of the dominant/subordinate in our relationship continue well into our adulthood). Continuously in print since 1976, Miller's little book is destined to remain in print as a classic, yet with a tiny bit of promotion from the publisher, it could easily become a current bestseller.

reprints issues 7-12, this is volume 2 of 14 that reprints all 80 issues of the Marvel comics transformers comic from the 80's.

I'm not going to bother explaining the story since amazon has it right there already, but what I can do is explain that this book has held up exteremly well over the years, so many books feel dated and there are little things here that are very 80's but the stories hold up, and i might say they may be better than the cartoons, much liek the G.I Joe comics of the same time and publisher, they were not held back as badly as TV shows were, not to say there is sex and lots of blood here, no these are very child safe issues, but they just seem a little better written, and that's saying something since i loved the old cartoon and toys.

I wish i could have got the original issues but they cost $10 or more for many issues, the cost of one trade here, it's a real good deal and i think old fans will love it, i did, but also new fans could be made, this is the best way to hook a new fan, while cartoon animation can suffer more over time these don't, so maybe you will want to grab a copy for yourself and maybe your kid or a friend, and i bet you will be buying all 14 volumes before it's over...with these stories, there is more than meets the eye.

My own reason why I think that The Wiggles: A Very Wiggly Christms is just like the DVD, Yule Be Wiggling, is because Santa Claus, needed help from The Wiggles. Since one of Santa's reindeer was sick and couldn't pull the slaigh, The Big Red Car was The Wiggles only hope-and delivering presents to children from around the world worked so magically well.
All I have to say now is that today, I've already read this new book. I'll wish The Wiggles my very own Wiggly Christmas to them, in December.

With so many specialized dictionaries abounding, it's a pleasure to report that Weiner's is truly useful for today's communicator. As an advertising/public relations practitioner with a deep interest in the graphic arts, I actually enjoyed finding so many technical terms accurately and often wittily defined. If you're looking for a minibrute to do your bidding, need an Oxberry unit, a Goudy other than Curt, or need a few minutes with a goyu, you're in luck here. You'll even find a goon stand or two, plus a much needed puncheon. All in all, a very valuable and solid book. It is now on my desk permanently, along with Skeat's Etymological Dictionary (1910) and the American Heritage Dictionary (1992). I've been using it daily for the past three months. Highly recommended.

"Webster's New World Dictionary of Media and Communications" By Richard Weiner, Macmillan Publishing ISBN 0-02-860611-6 The glossaries that are on web sites usually are too skimpy, in number and length of the definitions. That's why most of us still use dictionaries and other reference books. One of the most useful specialized dictionaries is Webster's New World Dictionary of Media and Communications, recently published by Macmillan. The 678-page paperback is the most comprehensive collection ever published of technical and slang terms in 28 fields, including advertising, computer, film, journalism, marketing, printing, public relations, radio, telecommunications, television and theater. Written by Richard Weiner, a renowned public relations counselor, the book combines easy-to-read definitions with useful information for students and experts. The 35,000 "base entries" and related terms are more than in any advertising, film, literacy, television or theater dictionary. Several hundred definitions are not in any other dictionary. Another unique feature is the global orientation, with hundreds of British, Canadian, French, German and Japanese words used by film buffs and business people. Listings include abbreviations, acronyms, associations, awards, biographical dates and several hundred major companies in the media and communications fields, including headquarters cities. Current jargon, nicknames and slang are supplemented with historical information, particularly 19th century printing and publishing terms that are still used. Pithy comments call attention to words that are commonly used incorrectly, misspelled or mispronounced. The book will be useful to the many millions of people who are employed in the broadcasting, postal, promotion, telephone and other communications fields, as well as to freelancers, students, writers and computer users, and the many people who are media buffs.
