Solid Introduction to Tarot (and Very Affordable, Too!)Review Date: 2008-10-28
Written by New Age author Skye Alexander, The Only Tarot Book You'll Ever Need presents Tarot fundamentals in an engaging, immensely readable format. From suit explanations to numerology, color symbolism to court cards, this 184-page soft cover book published by Adams Media (2008) serves as an excellent introduction to Tarot.
The Only Tarot Book You'll Ever Need contains material adopted and abridged from The Everything® Tarot Book (2nd Edition 2006), also written by the author, providing the core tenets from that book delivered with tighter writing and a more accessible layout.
Here are some of the topics admirably covered by Ms. Alexander:
* Brief Tarot history
* Explanation of the Major and Minor Arcanas
* Thorough treatment of Tarot and universal symbolism
* Tracking reading progress with a journal
* Upright and reversed card meanings
* Grayscale reproductions of every Rider-Waite® card
* Numerous "Tricks of Tarot" sidebars, providing additional practical and esoteric insights
* Seven important spreads, including the Celtic Cross, Horoscope and Feng Shui Spreads
* Using Tarot for personal growth, meditation and contemplation
* Accessing intuition
* Traveling between the conscious and the unconscious with the cards
* Finding the right Tarot deck and creating your own
Even for experienced Tarot enthusiasts, The Only Tarot Book You'll Ever Need offers interesting tidbits about the cards. For example:
* "The Emperor is related to Zeus, the father-god of the Greek pantheon. The Romans called him Jupiter; the Norse called him Thor. All these deities were known for throwing thunderbolts, or lightning. In some decks The Emperor carries lightning instead of the ankh."
* "A spiritual teacher whose task is to connect the world of humans with that of the gods, to forge a link between the material and spiritual worlds, The Hierophant is a pontifex, an ancient word that meant maker of bridges, and that is used to designate a priest."
* "The Wheel of Fortune is linked to the three Fates. One spins the thread of life, the second weaves it, and the third cuts it. Thus, The Wheel of Fortune is a reminder of the mysterious cycle of life, death, and rebirth and of the invisible forces that measure them out to each of us."
* "The world temperance is derived from the Latin temperare, which means to moderate, blend, or mix together harmoniously. Interestingly, this card was earlier named Time, which is a key to its underlying message."
Concise, uncomplicated and affordable (it retails for under $10!), The Only Tarot Book You'll Ever Need provides a solid foundation for those wanting to dip their toes in the deep waters of Tarot but aren't quite sure where to start, as well as offering seasoned Tarotists a few fresh perspectives to consider and apply.

Excellent Analysis and GREAT writerReview Date: 2008-07-20
This book details out how suburban gay culture co-exists and the habits and behaviors as well as the background of how and why things happen the way they do.
It's a very fast read and is written with a general audience in mind. Another great book from a Missouri author!
Peacocks, Chameleons, Centaurs Review Date: 2007-05-06
Exploring the other Gay AmericaReview Date: 2003-09-19
What Brekhus has done, very effectively, in this book is expose the world of a very different gay America, that of the suburban gay male. The peacocks, chameleons and centaurs referred to in the title denote three broad categories of gay men and the way in which they choose to live their lives. Peacocks are used as a reference point to begin discussion. They are those seen as "typically gay" in much of America, living in enclaves in urban centers and viewing gay or queer as a noun, something they are at an essential level. Chameleons treat gay as more of a verb and are sometimes referred to as "lifestyle commuters." They live in predominantly straight suburban areas and blend in with the local culture, traveling elsewhere to "be gay." This may include weekend trips to the city or further removed events where gay men gather. Their behavior is very different in environments where they are surrounded by other gay men than it is in their suburban communities. For centaurs, gay is an adjective, one of many which describe them and perhaps not terribly important in the overall scheme of things. They might see themselves for example, as a white suburban accountant, active in their local community, who also happens to be gay.
What I find most refreshing about this book is the way in which it breaks beyond the boundaries of the urban gay community, to explore a suburban gay life you don't hear much about, while still recognizing the significance of the interrelation between these worlds. Brekhus explores both the intersections of and conflicts between people who share one particular trait in common, but choose to express it in very different ways. I think it will be an eye-opening read for those who see gay culture as monolithic. This books helps open a window on the sometimes conflictual question of what it means to be gay in America and offers some valuable insights. I was particularly impressed with the way in which the author manages to communicate the opinions and attitudes of the individuals he interviewed in the writing of this book. This, like any good work of sociology, benefits from conveying the humanity of the subjects.
I highly recommend this book for anyone seeking a broader understanding of gay culture.

A Book Worth Reading...Review Date: 2008-05-31
The book never made the journey.
Once I sat down and started reading it, I couldn't put it down. Tom is a great writer, integrating sound biblical principles with excellent real life examples and scenarios. He is liberal in using stories from his own life that are insightful into both the content of the book, but also into the author himself. Those are the kind of books I enjoy the most.
This is a great book I would recommend as a gift to a book lover who has "read everything out there" because it has a different angle that is refreshing. And Tom doesn't shy away from butchering sacred cows that impede true spiritual growth in Christ. I can attest to this from my own experience with him as I've watched him minister and through my interactions with him.
I must also add that Tom is a man of great gifting, but more importantly, of exceedingly great character. He's a person I trust. Hence, I highly recommend his book, Praying Faith!

A multifaceted study of a little known aspect of the Civil Rights MovementReview Date: 2008-07-29
Ward explores the myriad ways network and local radio were used to advance the cause of Civil Rights and racial uplift, from obvious uses such as announcements of protests and rallies, to more subtle image enhancing programs such as "homemaker shows" (which might have served double duty by helping to create the collective female consciousness so crucial to the movement.)
Ward neither presents nor defends a monolithic image of black vs white radio owners, producers, on-air personalities or even consumers. Throughout the book, in various towns and sometimes even at the same station, we meet some professionals of both races dedicated to the cause, and others dedicated to the bottom line. We meet listeners who are tuning in for news of the struggle and others who just want to be entertained. Sometimes they got both at the same time.
It's rare to find a book which is both exhaustively researched AND enjoyable to read. I can obviously recommend it to anyone interested in African American Studies but I go a step further and recommend it to "old time radio" buffs as well. As one with an interest in both areas, I feel like I got 2 books for the price of one!

great advice on how to read more productively with your kidsReview Date: 1998-04-22
This book has valuable suggestions for
parents and grandparents and teachers of very young readers (and listeners), and older, more sophisticated readers, too.
Plus, reading Really Reading! is not a major undertaking; you can read it in an afternoon and use its techniques with your
kids that evening!
I've found that my kids enjoy the time we spend reading together more now that I'm using the things I learned from this book; and I'm enjoying reading with them more, too.

Great tool for meditative results!Review Date: 2006-07-13
I picked up the CD set last week, and was blown away. Sound quality is amazing, and Robert's rich voice really adds to the directed meditations. There's a "real world" feeling to Robert Morgen's set that is missing in a lot of the other meditation CDs available. Those often seem to be the host just reading into a microphone while playing canned environmental tracks.
The techniques are simple, free of cultural or religious flavor, and build on each other to develop a full TM experience.
I also found time management on the CD's to be well thought out, letting me listen while driving or during shorter break periods.

Lasting lessons from a journalism greatReview Date: 2003-09-01
Throughout the Vietnam and Watergate era of the 60s and 70s, the lawyer-turned-news executive was credited with standing up for his news people in conflicts with the government and business interests. In this volume of memoirs, organized very well by Susan and Bill Buzenberg, readers also see that he was just as tough with his own staff when it came to issues of balance and accuracy.
Readers will also be intrigued by Salant's explanation of why he approved "60 Minutes" several
years after it was proposed; his written battle of wits with Charles Crutchfield, the conservative chief executive of a CBS
Television affiliate;
why he didn't like music on CBS news shows; and why he felt himself a stranger in strange lands during
his post-CBS years at NBC and the National News Council.
This book will be enjoyed by those interested in the issues behind newsgathering. And even though the business has changed markedly (to many, for the worse) since Salant's days, the Salant memoirs show the intelligence, thought and love of humanity he brought to his work -- qualities that are always needed in the exercise of news judgement.
It's been a quarter century after Dick Salant's left the stage of broadcast journalism. But thanks to this excellent book, his wisdom and intellect can benefit generations of young journalists.
