STRONG MEDICINE AND MANUAL FOR LOVING COMPASSIONATE FORGIVING ACTION IN OUR WORLD OF WAR AND SUSPICION

Review Date: 2007-05-23
Please read carefully in prayer this excellent account of strong loving action stemming from the time of the Vietnam War and continuing today, as the author also speaks of healing the veterans of that war. This healing power we will need mor and more in our own naiton as thousands of deeply damaged young people return from Iraq and Afghanistan.

We need this book now in our lonely search for peace in a time of ovrwhelming and unavoidable warmongering, to read of the courageous and true spirit of peace in time of the Vietnam War, standing for peace despite all the madness around. Read this book carefully and find a true friend, a guide, a good soul, and hope for real and lasting peace through love in action.

The introduction by the Reverend Father Daniel Berrigan sets the context and ambience for the true poetry which follows. Thich Nhat Hanh in turn wrote a few pages for Father Berrigan's great Uncommon prayer: A book of Psalms. This author also wrote the famous The Raft Is Not the Shore: Conversations Toward a Buddhist/Christian Awareness, A Guide To Walking Meditation and several other spiritual guides as a quick search here of the amazon reveals.

Highly recommended and may your personal and spiritual library of this author open widely with this beginning book.

Ven. Thich Nhat Hanh is one of the planets greatest resources. He has given his life to teaching and the eradication of suffering[or perhaps the transformation of suffering]. I first encounterd Nhat hanh in a jewel of a book, THE RAFT IS NOT THE SHORE,a dialogue with Daniel Berrigan,S.J.[soon to be reprinted]Sine then, i have read as much of Thich hat hanh as I can. This book is a group of essays and statements to the press covering a period form early in the vietnam war{Nhat Hanh has been in exile since the mid 1960's]up to the gulf war. The opening is a play {a short one] that takes place in vietnam. The other essays[very well written] cover like minded subjects: Buddhism in Vietnam, on simplicity, refugees{boat people, specifically] and the title piece.Along with Maha Ghosananda,{called the Gandhi of cambodia, the patriarch of Cambodian buddhism] nhat hanh is a boddhitsatva,a living saint. we are graced by his presence, and his writings.

A bringer of peace to the modern world...

This collection of writings by Thich Nhat Hanh spans over two decades of his reflections on nonviolence, peace, and reconciliation. The voice of a poet is mixed with the inner strength found in the works of Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and the Dalai Lama. It is an important resource for anyone working for social change, or searching for strength from within.

Of Thich Nhat Hanh's more than sixty books, this one would be one of my picks of his "top ten," following closely behing PEACE IS EVERY STEP and BEING PEACE. Highly recommended.

I was lucky enough to get a copy last month and read it straight through in one evening. It was recommended to me by a friend who had read it and was amazed at what insights into healing the Native American Culture has to offer. Above all, it was very informative to the non-native American. I grew up trusting in doctor's and hospitals, not knowing about any other alternatives. Native American's treat illnesses in a holistic way, healing the mind, body, and spirit. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in how other cultures approach the healing process. Especially to non-native American's such as myself who grew up without a clue to alternative medecine.!

This book is one of my student's favorite books. Check out his review below:

The Giant Germ

This book is about Ms. Frizzle's class going in Keesha's sandwich. The fifth graders find the sandwich on the floor and they put it in the garbage. They see microbes in the sandwich. The Giant Germ teaches you about germs.

My first piece of evidence is it teaches you how germs make you sick if there is green fungi in the food you eat. This teaches you about germs because it tells you how it can maek you sick.

My second piece of evidence is it teaches you how long germs lived on on earth. Microbes have been on earth for at least 3.5 billion years. That's longer than plants, dinosaurs, or any other living thing on the plante. Human beings didn't appear untli just 2 million years ago.

My last piece of evidence is it teaches you what forms germs. These are microbes fungi, bacteria, protoa, and viruses. This teaches you about germs because it tells you what forms germs.

The Giant Germ teaches you about germs. If you want to learn about germs READ THIS BOOK TODAY!

Good for Microbiology, weak on Bio-Chem

Ms. Capeci explains the basics of microbiology and the structure and behavior of bacteria, but she entirely neglects RNA recombination. This is a shame, because RNA recombination is the most interesting part of microbiology.

The bio-chem is a little weak.

I will say, however, that I have cribbed bits of this book for my thesis.

Great introduction to Microbiology

It uses the common language to explain what is a germ. I think it is a great introductory book for young reader on the subject of microbiology. It does have all the latin names and need some help with adults (or dictionary) for proper pronounciation. The only little disappointment I feel about this one is the note for proper pronounciation of those scientific names of microbes and taxonomy (only a few).

As a working woman that has raised 3 children, I can relate to the dilema that we as parents have in leaving our most precious possesions with someone whom we barely know, at least at first. We try our hardest to make smart, thorough and well researched choices so that we can go about our responsibilities guilt free and with comfort. Making Childcare Choices, guides us through all of the questions and organizing involved in hiring the appropriate care taker.

What a cool book! Very awesome indeed. The whole thing at the hot teen magazine is really sort of a school newspaper run by a former magazine person, but it's still a cool story about Mary Kate's scheming co-worker. It's fun to watch Mary Kate bust her! And Ashley has started a dating service at the coffee place and comes across a Mystery Man who is looking for THE perfect girl. You'll be surprised at who the man is, and who the girl is! A great read for both people who do and don't like books!

I really like the book, because I think it's really cool that Michelle met a Movie Star on the beach and didn't even recognize her until she got home. It shows that movie stars are real people just like the rest of us. I would love to be a movie star.

I enjoy the Full House Michelle books very much and own many and check many out from the local libary. Keep writing them Ms. Dubowski. I look forward to my summer vacation so I will have more time to read them. I am sorry they took new shows of Full House of the air on TV. Megan

My daughter received this book last Christmas when she was 18 months old, and within days she was "reading" each page and identifying all of the Blue's Clues characters. She loves the Blue's birthday party scene where she receives turquoise the turtle as a present, and happily recites how she is taken care of each day. This book still holds my 23 month old daughters' attention from beginnig to end, and she asks to have it read to her several times a day. Highly recommended if your child is a Blue's Clues fan like mine!

"Halleluya!  On this 26th day of May, 2004, the New York Times confessed to having helped promote the lies that got us into war with Iraq."

"We should fire Rumsfeld, and Cheney, and Bush, and the whole pack of warmakers today -- not tomorrow or next month -- today. "

"Politicians hire brains.  Telling them what to say and how to say it is a big business and getting bigger all the time."

"People who are under the illusion that the Times is a liberal paper should read its editorial today. It says moving good jobs abroad is 'freeing up American capital, labor and other resources for more efficient, high-value uses.' "

----John Hess, from wbai.org

I consider John Hess one of the most important voices in contemporary America. His words and what we are able to learn from them, should motivate us to open our eyes to the corruption and hypocrisy in our nation. The realization that more people recognize the name of a hate monger like Rush Limbaugh than the name of John Hess, illustrates the manufactured ignorance that those in power would prefer. Only through education will we effectively address what is wrong in the U.S. I find John Hess to be an educator who is informed, passionate and motivating!

A Great Writer About The NY Times And His Times

I bought Mr. Hess' book out of curiosity. I knew Mr. Hess from the days when he was a commentator on a local TV station before Rupert Murdoch bought the station and destroyed it. I expected to try the book and give up after 50 or so pages. Well, I couldn't put it down! Mr. Hess is a very good writer who never bores you.

I lived through the years that he writes about. He explains for me many of the things that I felt were not right about those years as well as the lack of reporting by The New York Times. I have to ask myself where my head was during that period.

I highly recommend this book. It gave me an eye-opening view of The New York Times, politicians, and the sad level of reporting in the United States. It should be required reading by reporters and would-be reporters.

Stripping the Times Bare

With a diamond-hard honesty rare, if not unique, among today's journalists, John L. Hess has written a memoir that deflates the gas-filled balloon that is the New York Times. A reporter and editor for the Times for 24 years, Hess shows how from the moment Adolph Ochs purchased the newspaper in 1896 it has cozied up to corrupt politicans and wealthy businessmen. In a blurb on the jacket, Kurt Vonnegut terms the newspaper a "mighty crowd-control engine," and indeed Hess provides many examples of the Times leading the way in suppressing news and information that might educate the public as to how they are being bilked. No one could read this book and still think that the Times is a liberal, much less an honest, newspaper.
