A Still Timely Lesson on Prejudice

I was amazed to find out that this book has virtually disappeared from the Chicago Library System---that really oughta be remedied! This book was a Newberry Award winner and as such, contains lessons that possess lasting value for readers.

I read the book in the 7th grade and was looking for a copy for my daughter. I discovered that it has been allowed to lapse out of print! This is astonishng, since it is a priceless story about the entrenchment of bigotry in contemporary American life and how it is experienced through the eyes of a young boy.

The vehicle of mom's entry into real estate provided a plausible and realistic framework for lessons about prejudice and inequality in American life, and how much farther we all have to go. This book should be required reading in today's elementary and middle schools.

I read this book when I was 10, and still remember the lessons learned from the story of Berries, his mother's jaunt into real estate, his family's response, Sidney's accident, etc. The civil rights movement was in its heyday when I read Berries for the first time. Berries brought the true lessons of the time home in a timeless manner. Berries still lives with me. Its lessons were timely then and it's timely now. I am now buying a copy for my youngest daughter, and I expect for it to become a life-classic for her as it remains for me.

Neville at her best.

Berries Goodman is a book that I read in my youth and continue to remember well into my adulthood. It is a story about courage and growing up as a minority in a world that is troubled by difference. It is a wonderful book for people of all ages and one that I will have in my library for my children. Don't miss this treasure. You will be happy that you have read it.

This is quite an interesting guide for those seeking for innovation in newspaper design. What makes it so interesting is the fact that it's assembled with pages and pages of newspaper desing around the world.
Good choise if browing for a change in your paper.

Essential for any journalist or designer's bookshelf.

What's the matter with newspapers these days? Not enough creativity, put simply. blah, blah, blah. this is THE book that will get those creative juices going from the very first glance. Gorgeous format photography (the eager and well-sighted can even read the articles) encompassing designs from around the globe, gloss paper and well written guidelines consolidate a book that is a pleasure to view and a pride to own. In previous years I have found it is not wise to lend - it takes ages to get the blessed book back!! A genuine and completely worthy investment, and absolutely recommended.

I bought this book because I wanted to see the world's best newspaper designs. What I got is more than expected. Now I know what makes best newspapers. It's a combination of a lot of things. There are lessons to be learnt although the book is not a manual. Newspaper designers, editors, photographers and art directors better work together hand in hand to produce the highest quality newspaper or else.... I found that european newspapers are superb in the combination of news, art and design. What more can you ask if they can blend them so well in a newspaper. The American newspapers fares equally well with a combination of news and photos. For the Asian and the Pacific,... they had better catch up.

This is one of the very few books on men's mysteries that I can actually recommend to my friends and family. Firethorn has been immersed in the topic for over twenty years and has taken many young men and their older brothers into the depths of their souls. The exercises he presents in this book are excellent (if sometimes weird) and his insights are deep and meaningful. He presents the male soul out in the daylight, warts and all, and finds it valuable and worthy. This isn't just another fluffy "Iron John" spin-off, but a work of both intellect and heart that I found highly inspirational while writing my own book "The Pagan Man." Whether you are a teenaged male or a fully grown man (or a woman who loves one), this book will be a guiding voice while you're out there on that tightrope.

The best male spirituality book I've ever read!

This book is it! I've read IRON JOHN, KING WARRIOR MAGICIAN LOVER and some of FIRE IN THE BELLY and while those were all good, this book is better! If you're interested in the Men's Movement, Men's Spirituality, Masculine Psychology or whatever you want to call it, this book is a must read! I found IRON JOHN too vague and I had this sense that I was supposed to be wild or something, but didn't know how. KING WARRIOR MAGICIAN LOVER provided me with a map of the soul that a mature man is supposed to have, but didn't tell me how to bring about maturity in my own soul.

BLIND FOLD ON A TIGHTROPE is full of excercises and with every word, Firethorn encourages you to go off into Male Mystery while at the same time barraging you with profound questions to mull over before you go out. And, Firethorn has been doing this for the past 15 years! He's out there initiating boys into manhood and leading male rituals. The other thing I like about it is that he's not TELLING you what to believe. He's just giving you suggestions. It's ultimately up to you to find out for yourself what it means to be a man to you. This is bar none the most helpful book I've ever read about male spirituality! I highly recommend doing all of the excercises, too, no matter how weird they get. They really helped me grow.

A definite must read

Bruchac's autobiography holds the reader's interest to the end. It's a well told story that could be read and enjoyed by young adults, as well as their parents.

'Bowman's Store' resonated with me because of my own history. I was told that my great-grandmother was French Canadian. I never saw a photograph of her - or even knew one existed - until a cousin showed me a picture from one of her own family albums. There is no mistaking the ethnic background of the woman with the intricately beaded collar and sober mien; no doubt about that of the unknown child at her side. This discovery came long after my mother's death. There was no one left to whom I could address my many questions - no answers to be had.

The silence seems impenetrable. What were my great-grandmother's origins - and by extension - mine? I can't reach her. She's carefully hidden from view by the traditions of shame that were felt by later generations. The same kind of silence experienced by Joseph Bruchac.

Bowman's Store - the rememberances, of today and yesterday in an Abenaki life. The discovery of whispers in the blood and the path of discovery in the recovery and claiming of heritage. Circles are begun, completed, and heralded. This story will echo, for anyone who remembers family and celebrates their own. For Jr. High School readers and up. It should be in every library that wishes to have books by and for Indian people. John D. Berry, Native American Studies Librarian, U.C. Berkeley

Bruchac does a wonderful job of mixing Indian tales and legends with the stories of his life. I found myself asking questions about events in one chapter, only to have them answered in a later chapter. Bruchac gives you enough detail to put you in the story, but doesn't inundate you with it. I hope someday to attend a storytelling festival where he is featured. His ease with the language and his experiences in life make Bruchac a fabulous storyteller. Thank you for sharing your memories and those of a great people.

A moving account of one man's recovery of his heritage.

Joseph Bruchac lived through a childhood few would envy. His parents used him as a weapon in their own endless battle. However, he lived with his warm and loving grandparents, and this story retells his life with them. His grandfather, the "Bowman" who owned the store, claimed to be "French Canadian" to his Indian-hating neighbors. Forced to hide his heritage, Bowman still taught his grandson how to grow up strong and proud of himself and his achievements. Now that Bruchac has recovered his Indian heritage, and become a well-known writer and editor of Indian works, this biography shows both the power of that heritage, and the need contemporary Indians feel to recover it.

From the ins and outs of a "regular" television station and the handling of office politics. My experiences have only been enhanced from page one to the end.I'm not just a reporter. I'm a college student and wanted to get into broadcasting but didn't know exactally how. This book not only pointed me in the right direction, but I believe it helped me land my fist on-air job. (in a top 20 market)... I just want to thank both of the writers for all the information and knowledge!!!!

Simply the best roadmap to an on-air television career

This book reads like a personal conversation from a couple guys who started at the bottom and worked their way to the top of the world in on-air television broadcasting in a short period of time. All 11 chapters are relevant, interesting, funny, and above all motivating. I did not want to put this book down. It simply laid out a sure fire plan that anyone with a fair amount of passion, drive, talent and ambition can follow to a successful on-air career in television. The book never comes across as preachy, or makes it seem like a career in television is too difficult or unrealistically easy. It was a joy to read such a current, and fresh perspective from two guys who have a message to share and do it as well as I've ever seen. It was also nice to hear it from someone who has been through all the trials and tribulations of getting an internship, putting together a resume tape, landing a first job and building their careers to the top markets in the country. It is simply a must read for anybody in high school, college, in the television industry currently or dreaming about entering it. Because of it's motivational and inspirational tone, I recommend it to anyone entering the work force in any field.

I checked this book out from the library for my 15 month-old. She and my 3 year-old son both love this book and ask me to read it every night. I kind of expand on the pages (I just repeat the phrases a few more times and speed up/slow down, etc.) because they like to act out the movements. It has gotten to the point where my 15-month old daughter will open the book on the floor and either march in place or raise her arms up in the air to "make a star" and then she collapses into giggles. It looks like I'm going to have to buy this one for their permanent library!

I bought this book for my daughter when she was about eight months old. She's now fifteen months old and she still loves to have it read to her. It has nice bright colors, words that rhyme, and it's made really well. It's just the right size for her little hands to hold. The padded cover and board pages are easy to clean, too.

She LOVES it!

R U kiddign me!? This is one of my daughters favorite books! She's been saying what's coming on the next page after a few times reading it. It rhymes nicely and I made up 'actions' to go with the words in the books 'whirling, swirling, twirling, whizzing round and round' (while I make cicles on her belly!). We still get smiles and giggles everytime we read it (she's 18 months now and was a year old when we purchased the book). If your child likes BoohBah this is a good book to invest in!

"Edutainment" - But Definitely Not the Worst

Based on the "Arthur" episode by the same name, "Buster Baxter, Cat Saver" teaches a lesson, but at the same time includes humor that escalates to greater and greater levels throughout the story. When Buster "rescues" a cat from a tree, he at first denies that it was an act of heroism; he just happened to be in the right place at the right time. As more and more attention starts be heaped on him, he starts to really get into being a hero, even starting a script for his own television series, which he states will be "edutainment." ("It's supposed to be a combination of entertainment and education, but often ends up being the worst of both.") When he starts trying to get the Brain to do his homework and being otherwise pompous, his friends start hatching schemes to try to bring his eager down to size. This is one bunny, though, who isn't so easily swayed.

My class of first graders loved this story. This story hasfunny things happen to the characters. Arthur is upset because Busterthinks he is better than everyone. This story has many plots and mysteries as Buster's friends try to show him that he is not as brave as he thinks. It is easy to read and easy to follow, but NOT BORING!

My 7-year old daughter (2nd grade) loves this entire series of books. When she was younger (up to kindergarten) she loved the "adventure" series of Arthur books. We made the transition to the chapter books because they have so much more story to them. They were perfect at the age where I would just read them to her, and by now we're at the point where she reads them to me. We have LOTS of books, but no others have held her interest as well across these stages. Fantastic value for the money. I automatically buy each new chapter book as they're released.

I wish I could give this author, and this book a 5 plus rating.
I had the pleasure of joining colleague and Nationally Known Psychic/Astrologer Joyce Keller on her radio broadcast from Long Island New York shortly after the attacks of Sept. 11th, 2001.

I found Joyce to be one of the most personable, down to Earth, and concise colleagues I have ever had the pleasure of working beside.

Calling All Angels openly bears the same traits as this beautiful author.

You can actually understand and comprehend the techniques suggested for connecting with your Angels.

You will most certainly feel the warm persona of the author through her written words.

Years ago I used to feel guilty about "asking" my Angels to intervene and assist me through daily grinds. I thought this was selfish. This book assures you that this is why they have been placed with us. Not just to always pave the way with roses and sunshine, but to give us the feeling that we are not alone in the hard times.

The book shares simple instructions on inviting your Angels in.

I found CALLING ALL ANGELS appropriate for a wide age range as well.
I have mailed copies to several friends and clients aging from 17 to 84.
From one end of the spectrum to the other found the book inspiring as well as insightful.

Most of all, it IS UNDERSTANDABLE...
I could not tell you how many times I have picked up
books that I cannot maintain focus on because of all the
psychological terms and metamorphis extreme life changes the author takes us through to get their point across.
By the time you actually get to techniques that you can utilize on your own...you are brain dead from trying to follow!
Not that I don't "sometimes" enjoy a trip through Tibet, 5 dear death experiences, and listening to the author tell of tremendous life decisions and feats. I have and will "enjoy" that type of writing.
However there are times when I just want to settle in,
get to the point, relax, and learn with a smile and simplicity about all these amazing gifts that life holds.
Calling All Angels is perfect for those times.

Best book I have ever read.
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.

Calling All Angels is by far the best self-help, spiritual or angel book I have ever read. Ms. Keller is readable and positive, and gives concise, simple techniques on bringing angelic, or divine help into your life. I have found her techniques to work much more effectively than any offered by the myriad of "self-help" gurus floating around today.

Old Badger may not be able to jump, roll, or climb like he used to, but there are still some tricks he can teach Little Badger, and he's delighted to do so. Warm, patient, and caring, Old Badger takes the time to be with Little Badger and to share his years of experience. A heartwarming, father/child relationship is explored through Bunting's splendid use of dialogue and modeling. A young child's version of Eve's The Man Who Could Call Down Owls or Kristine Franklin's The Old, Old Man and the Very Little Boy.

The perfect father's day story.

The tenderness shared between the two is skillfully rendered in the detailed works of first-time illustrator LeUyen Pham. This book is highly recommended for sons and fathers, grandsons and grandfathers or anyone of us who has ever learned a trick or two from an "Old Badger."

I thought this book was totaly excelent. This book was mostly about Miko acting different and hanging out with a very popular boy named Cleve who hangs out with the Ones. The CSGs see Miko acting this way and get worried and decide to throw a party for Miko to make her feel better. Miko decides to totaly change her image and asks Rockett to help her but Rockett isn't so sure this is a good idea. I thought the ending of this book was excellent, I recomend this book to everyone. But make sure the read the 3 books before this one so you kind of know whats going on with the people at Whistling Pines Junior High.To find out what's wrong with Miko read this totally phat book.

The storyline was captivating and it was great to see a character go through a major change. THe final climax was sorta unexpected, but so was the whole story! Find out why Cleve and Miko start hanging out and also find out why Rockett is spending so much time with Nakili and Dana, and actually getting along with Dana! This is a great book in the Rockett Series and i loved it!

I like this book because it portrays the problems that pre-teens go through and how they try to solve them.
