I read this book for the first time more than 7 years ago, and loss count of how many times I read it again. It is an enlightening, inspiring, uplifting story that happened to a quite ordinary man and that will make you eager to read more of this subject. It was my first NDE book reading and I am bordering 20 now. I can't begin to describe the emotions it provoked in me and the learning and inspiration to live a good life and love my fellow men.
I strongly advise the reader to pray in order to develop the spiritual gift of discernment so that you can know for yourself whether these accounts are true (there are false stories out there) and also how you should position them in the whole scheme of spiritual learning. You will need humility, openess, love for the truth and trust in God.

As a Mormon, I was inspired by this man's experiences. They follow our beliefs and provide clear descriptions of what happened when Mr. Tooley crossed the veil into the Spirit World. I highly recommend this book for all those with an honest curiosity. I have given several to people who asked what I believe about life after death.

Great for mormons

This is a great book if you are mormon. I think we see what we believe we will see when we get to heaven. I didn't buy all of this man's story. If you are really searching for answers I recommend reading the Neale Donald Walsch books. I found those book life changing for me.

Denise Linn is a remarkable teacher. This book gives clear guidance and explanation about why and how you would explore your past life experiences. Her description of how time works is worth committing to memory!

I bought this book, based on other reviews I read. I was expecting more of a "how-to" manual, but it was really just a series of little stories given as examples of proof of reincarnation. Very disappointing.

Like the tagline says, this IS one of the most empowering books on reincarnation you will read in this lifetime! This book was previously released under the name Past Lives Present Dreams, but Denise had added new parts and revised some others, so if you are a Denise Linn fan, it is worth buying the new one (plus the cover is pretty!). If you are new to your study of past lives OR deepening your study, then this book is a must have.

Denise shares her story of her Near Death Experience and how it relates to past life exploration. She then shares tips, techniques and more for delving into your own past lives. Not only does tell you how to discover your past lives, she teaches you how to change them.

Yes, you can change the past...grab this book and learn how. This truly is one of those books that will bring you so much peace...

It's a book that tells you what you have to do after you die. It's a preparation guide for the last trip. Most of what she writes is not from her near death experience, but from a mix of other sources on what you meet after death. I was very disappointed.

Diane will receive incalculable blessings for these truths.

This wonderful little paperback is a "how to" on dying. It not only tells you clearly & concisely what will happen at death, it tells you what you can do (for yourself or a loved one) to make the experience less fearful--even beautiful. It's a "must read" for caregivers, hospice workers, & nurses and anyone who has lost a loved one.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

I can't begin to tell you how helpful your book was to our family when our mother was dying from cancer. She was sent home from the hospital to die and we fixed up her room using some of your suggestions. We read your book to her and together we wrote our own words for the Traveler's Guide. We helped her practice "going to the light" while she was still able to and in her last days we took turns reading the Guide to her. Her death was such a beautiful, moving experience, we all felt we were helping her. As she took her last breath, my sister and I both believe we saw her soul leave her body and hover over her bed, and we were able to lovingly say good-bye. The memorial service she helped us plan was also very beautiful and we are sure she was there. The information in your book was so helpful to us, even now we are sure she is enjoying her new life and comes to us when we get together and remember her life with us. Thank you for sharing this information and helping us through this. God bless you.

Why is a 200-page book, which is basically just historical research, list for $65? This makes this book unappealing to anyone but Buddhist scholars, who have the least to gain from it! Shameful.

Scholars of Tibetan Buddhism typically focus on doctrine and rituals; Tibetan enthusiasts typically romanticizes Tibetan Buddhism to be a religion of peace and otherness. This book is a refreshing history of how the Tibetans actually conceived of their own worlds (living and the dead), how they lived their lives, and how the rich lore about the world of the dead was transmitted. The mastery of primary sources used for the research of this book is impressive. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in Tibetan culture, and specifically the religious praxis. The book is well worth the investment!

This book rocks. It's a fast-paced narrative about journeys to the netherworld and back: the stories of a Tibetan housewife, a young lama, a noble and a Buddhist monk. The beauty of this book is that it is both a lasting contribution to our understanding of Tibetan Buddhism and yet completely accessible to a wide audience. Cuevas writes with verve. Five stars!

This is definitely NOT the best book from dr. Ian Stevenson. The author has lost his skepticism and most of his scientific impartiality. The majority of cases included in this book lacks strong evidence sugestive of reincarnation, with the exception of a few very good cases. Because of these good cases, the book is still worth its value, but overall it is not a great work. "Children who remember previous lives" is a much better book from the same author.

Another winner from Dr. Stevenson

This is basically the "Reader's Digest" version of a much longer, more technical work. Thus, the descriptions of some of the cases are very sketchy. Nevertheless, Stevenson's reputation is impeccable after something like 40 years in this field, and you can be pretty confident that he isn't seriously skewing the facts. He seems to be more up-front than in earlier works in acknowledging that reincarnation is really the only plausible explanation for many of these cases. The book focuses primarily on cases where birthmarks and other physical anomalies match up with injuries suffered in the prior life. The book is well-illustrated with photographs, and some of the cases are truly weird. Put this book together with something like his Twenty Cases Suggestive of Reincarnation, and your theology will be sorely challenged if it denies the reality of reincarnation.

Interesting but . . .

This is an interesting book. Much of it dove-tails with what Rabbi Yonassan Gershom has written about those who died during the Holocaust and have been reborn as blond haired-blue eyed Gentiles. Except that Dr. Stevenson's cases seem to lose their memories of the events in their previous lives at about age 7 or 8 and Rabbi Gershom's cases seem to be forever haunted by their experiences. One other thing I found disturbing about Dr. Stevenson's work is that the majority of his cases are from India, Burma, and Thailand, where reincarnation has been acceptable many centuries longer than it has been acceptable in our Western culture. It makes it much easier to doubt his cases than if the majority of his cases were from a culture that was less accedpting of the theory.

Reincarnation enters academia

Ian Stevensons book is a superb scientific exploration into the generally more esoteric realm of reincarnation. He has collected over 2600 reported cases of past-life memories of which 65 detailed reports have been published. It is correct, as one reviewer claims, that these reported cases are primarily from Buddhist, Hindu, African or Native American cultures where such phenomenons are more widely accepted than in the West. But this is natural, says Stevenson, as these cultures more openly will allow a child to speak about a previous life without being disbelieved or rebuked as they may be in the Christian West. Young children are very impressionable and will generally suppress whatever his or her parent or the culture does not permit them to believe in. Thus, it is reasonable to assume that there will be more such claims in these non-Western cultures to conduct such studies. One cannot accuse Stevenson of not following a scientific approach (instrumental injunction, direct apprehension, communal confirmation), his book brims with extremly detailed reports from children whose memories have been carefully collected and matched with the data of their former identity, profession, residence, and the way they died. If this is not believable science, what is? If reincarnation is a new concept to you, read and judge for yourself. If you already believe in reincarnation, read and get more rational reason to state your case.

I must say that I was a bit disappointed with this book. Perhaps I was looking for more real life experiences vs. statistical data comparison. Nonetheless it is a good book, giving you an idea what happens to people in their last moments on earth. But it doesn't really tell you what they see as in "how does the other world (if it exists) look", or can they hear the loved ones as they're "floating" away. I guess realistically, it's probably not possible to know those things but I guess that's what I was looking for in this book.

Exhaustive research, murky conclusion

Anyone interest in near death experiences or life after death should strongly consider reading this book. The research involved here is some of the most extensive, albeit exhausing I have ever read on any subject.

The authors, all MD's, have exercised the utmost diligence and honesty in researching, compiling, and analyzing data from both India and the U.S. on this very vital, but often abused subject.

The reading can be tedious at times and very much text book in nature. Also, don't expect any profound conclusions or revelations about the research from the authors either. They have opted for a very conservative and non-commital conclusion to their vast research. The reader must draw his or her own conclusions.

For those who desire a well-researched and documented book where the author expresses an opinion in no uncertain terms, read Tom Harpur's outstanding "Life After Death" ... .

This isn't a bad introduction to the subject for those with little previous exposure to it. It's based on the teachings of Edgar Cayce, which might have been a serious problem: Cayce was an extraordinary medical clairvoyant, but a lot of his predictions haven't come true and his historical pronouncements on Atlantis have to be taken on faith. He spoke in a kind of pseudo-Biblical gibberish which I find irritating and which poor Ms. Sparrow must constantly "interpret."

Nevertheless, the ideas discussed by the author generally accord with those of mediums, theosophists, and some psychical researchers. She clearly links reincarnation with the concepts of karma and divine grace, and makes a good case that they must be understood if the principle of reincarnation is to be grasped.

She meets head-on the main objections to the possibility of reincarnation, and although she doesn't disprove them, which could hardly be expected from anyone, she weighs them intelligently. Sparrow avoids extravagant New Age pronouncements, and her tone is straightforward, logical and full of common sense (if it is possible to speak of common sense in connection with reincarnation).

Readers who are already acquainted with the essential ideas about how reincarnation is said to work and would like a more pragmatic approach are directed to the books of Helen Wambach, who has done extraordinary research in subjecting many individuals' hypnotically induced recollections of previous lives to statistical and historical analysis.

There is a reason why two-thirds of our planet's population believes in and embraces reincarnation. Although it's been centuries in coming, Westerners are beginning to accept this "philosophy" as truth, as well.

If you've ever been curious about reincarnation on any level, this book will serve as an excellent introduction to this phenomenon. Elwell Sparrow's clearly-written book is based upon the readings and teachings of world-reknown psychic Edgar Cayce, himself a Christian. However, if you are of a different faith or spiritual belief, do not let that disuade you from reading this book!

After reading this moving, exciting book, many of your questions will be answered. This is a highly informative book, and at its conclusion, you may find that reincarnation (at its most fundamental level) is the fascinating commonality among the world's religions and peoples.

I highly recommend it! It changed my outlook on life forever.

This was the first book on reincarnation I have ever read and it was a great start. Edgar Cayce was the founding father of metaphysics in the West and, therefore, a perfect basis for a beginner. I learned the facts I needed to know and the places I needed to go next in order to explore my interests and beliefs.

i have just finished reading, sweet reverence by lyn valverde. i picked it up saturday morning, was going to read a few pages, after about half the book i had to stop. i had other things i need to do. sunday i did the same thing, i left my self the last chapter for today.
the book is very well written and it is from the heart. you go on a journey with lyn and you understand her heart. you are with her as she helps some one go home. what it is like to be with some one as they go through the dying process. you see it is not to be feared, the love that is brought out and how this helps them heal. it also gives you a little back ground on lyn so you can see where she came from. it would be a great book for people with a hospice heart and those who might die some day.

At some time in our lives a sister, brother, mother, father, child, best friend or someone we know will die. We all know this and/or have even experienced this but what do we do and how do we handle this huge fear of dying? Those questions and Lyn's personal experience of sitting with a special dying friend are brought to life on the pages of her book "Sweet Reverence". The true story begins with Lyn's remarkable spiritual experience that changed her life and set her on the path of helping the dying and their families. With the work of her angels, Lyn is taught to perfect a breathing technique that helps ease the fears of those who are dying and provides hope in understanding that life continues after death. The story also shows how important it is to try to bring peaceful closure to all involved. After reading this book I found myself sitting with my dad at the bedside of my step-mother. I was able to see that my dad needed hope that life continues after death. It was at this point I was able to reach out to my father and help him realize we truly are eternal. If you are looking to gain some insight about fears of dying, finding hope in life after death, and how to be and what to do as your loved one passes I highly recommend "Sweet Reverence".

This is one of the really excellent modern works in this field. I can't believe no one else has reviewed it. It is light years ahead of the New Age silliness which dominates modern writing on life after death. The author is a professor with excellent credentials, and this is a serious and balanced study of the evidence for personal survival. He focuses on the best evidence in each of several different areas (reincarnation, apparitions, etc.) and considers alternative (i.e., skeptical) interpretations. He finds some of the evidence compelling and some of it not-so-compelling, but the book as a whole is very pro-survival. This book is frequently cited and seems to have become pretty much a standard reference. If you have any interest in the possibility of life after death, this belongs in your library.

A review of other's work

Review Date: 2000-12-16
This book is divided into several sections: Reincarnation, Out of Body Experiences, Apparations of the Dead, and a few others. In each section, the author provides some leading cases (although not enough NEW cases) and research of others as evidence for something existing. Then he presents the critics arguments, and he attempts to review both sides of the case.

One thing that I found disappointing about the book is that the author has done zero research on his own. He has read widely on the subjects at hand, but the book is essentially his opinion of the arguments. He trys to use logical arguments to destroy the critics position, and for the most part, he succeeds. It seems he was more critical of the critics than of the researchers such as Ian Stevenson to the point I question his impartiality on the subject.

The book has value in that he provides the user with a wide range of arguments against the various claims.
