The Higher Truths in Life through "Re-creation"Review Date: 2008-08-14
An Engaging Gem for the Athlete and Non-Athlete. Review Date: 2008-06-27
"Explorers of the Extreme" is perhaps one of the first really credible, readable and entertaining examinations of the endurance athlete's psyche, motives, mindset and even "spirituality". Coffey is apparently not an endurance athlete herself but treats our kind with loving adoration. If you are a marathon runner, triathlete, surfer, cyclist or other "extreme" or endurance sport athlete you'll appreciate the insights and feel some of the pages in Coffey's book become an interesting mirror. This is also a fantastic read for an athlete's spouse who may have questions about why a person would ever subject themselves to the rigors of preparation and participation in endurance/extreme/risk sports.
Coffey explores the extreme athlete mentality from mountaineering to ultra-running to the Tour de France and even more amazing feats like free diving and extreme skydiving. It is refreshing to read a respectful treatment of our sub-species, the endruance/extreme athlete. Other books I've read on the motives and inner realm of us freaks treat us with a sort of detached disdain and label our motives as self-destructive and self grandizing. Coffey sees other inspirations as told to her by the people in the sports themselves.
There is also a readable and engaging thread throughout the book of the sociological theories behind risk and endurance sports, a particularly fascinating one pertaining to surfing.
This book is a delight and makes you feel good about being an endurance athlete, a rare breed, a risk taker. It is interesting to read about the ideas that may shape our motives. Highly recommended- great read. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Critical Examination that Diffuses the Near Death ExperienceReview Date: 2004-06-12
Biblical and medical truth about near-death experiencesReview Date: 1997-11-24
Section one defines NDE, reviews popular books, and answers major questions. Part two summarizes medical knowledge relating to the NDE, focusing on central nervous and cardiovascular systems. This portion may be of most interest to medical scholars. Part three examines biblical examples of death, resuscitation, and resurrection to expose the spiritual deception of the NDE philosophy and guide readers to embrace the truth. Included are extensive documentation and bibliography, Scripture and general indices.

Excellent intro to religions and life after deathReview Date: 1998-04-02
So for arguments sake, you're alive and you know someday you won't be. You would like to know what's on the other side. This book by Farnaz Ma'Sumian can provide you details on the beliefs of all the major religions in the world. The book offers an introductory overview of Hinduism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Buddhism, Christianity, Islam and Bahai.
Additionaly Ma'Sumian has researched Near-Death Experiences (NDE) quite well and offers a broad explanation of current theories to these experiences.
The book is fair, impartial and well written. For those seeking theological information on the subject of life after death this is a wonderful introduction.
Life After DeathReview Date: 2002-10-26
One of the most important features of the book is that, in discussing afterlife, she quotes "chapter and verse" from the sacred texts of each religion. Each chapter focusing on a religion includes the major writings of the religion, the primary concepts that relate to afterlife, the influence and/or similarities of that religion in relationship to other religions.
The big difference between religions of the East and West involves the concepts of reincarnation and transmigration which form the cornerstone of Eastern belief about afterlife but remain a minority position and esoteric idea in the West. The chapter on the Near-Death Experience (NDE) provides a standard and basic overview. She concludes that the most plausible explanation for NDE's is that they are, "universally available mystical experiences". The final chapter, "Religion and the NDE Phenomenon", is an excellent integration of the NDE into the literature of the world's religions.
All-in-all, Life After Death by Farnaz Masumian is an outstanding book. Having the Scripture and verse quotations from the world's religions alone is worth the price of the book. Added to this is her careful analysis of the concepts and contradictions both within and between the various religions. This book is a "must" for all students of life after death in general and the NDE in particular.

A valuable reference bookReview Date: 1999-07-20
However, don't expect this section of the book to be an inspiring bedtime read. The style is more like a thesis, with copious footnotes and language leaning heavily toward academe. The author's two previous works were annotated bibliographies, and her skill in that area is evident here, too.
Those who prefer more human interest may want to read the second half of the book first. In the second half, there are 11 interviews with lesbians and gay males who believe in reincarnation, and who express a wide range of beliefs about how that is connected to their sexuality and their lives in general. Not surprizingly, the gay perspectives on reincarnation are just as varied as those in the non-gay world.
In the conclusion, the author, herself a lesbian, explores what this study meant to her own spiritual search. Although she is not totally convinced of the reality of reincarnation, she finds it a fascinating topic as one of the many ways that spirituality expresses itself.
My main complaint about the book is that the typsetting layout in the first half leaves much to be desired. It follows the indentation format of an academic thesis, which works on a typewritten page, but is difficult to read in the smaller font of a printed book. Inserting a space above and below the quoted-indent paragraphs would have made it much easier on the eyes.
Still, this is a relatively minor point compared to the value of the information this book contains. I highly recommend it for both gay and reincarnation studies.

90 Minutes in HeavenReview Date: 2008-08-15
There were a few descriptions involving his time in heaven but the book focused more on Don Piper's recovery. I'm amazed at how much pain and suffering Don went through during his long recovery. He also experienced severe depression during the first part of his recovery. I could relate to some parts of his experience since I was on dialysis for four years and was fortunate enough to have a kidney transplant January of this year. I thought I experienced pain when I was on dialysis but it was nothing compared to the pain Don experienced during his recovery. As Don pointed out, he experienced excruciating pain and suffering, but it's was nothing compared to the pain and suffering Jesus Christ went through for us.
I recommend reading this book by those that are curious about heaven, however I think it would make an excellent gift for anyone going through a long recovery or some sort of trial with your health

This is not ChristianityReview Date: 2008-08-01
Believe what you want about Jesus, but understand that Embraced By The Light is not talking about the same Jesus described in the Bible.
clichesReview Date: 2008-06-20
Most of the story on her early struggles with faith, her near death experience, visions, etc are no different than any other near death account from a devoted Christian. Her vision seems to me to be something similar to an acid-trip, as the vividness and 'knowledge' she discovered is much like that of one using psychedelics.
The authors style is one of cheap religious inspiration...no wonder this was a bestseller. It preys on our desire to find deeper meaning in the world and to affirm existing faiths as truths.

A book which will touch your heart and help give you peace for loved ones who have passedReview Date: 2008-06-04
This book is very touching to the heart, mind, and spirit. It will give you hope and faith while grieving your loved one who passed. This book Embraced by the Light is inspiring and uplifted. It suggests when we die our spirits go to a much better place. It suggests to live spiritually with God, To know that in the end we will be with God and our loved ones experiencing incredible joy, love, and peace. I higly recommend this book it will touch your heart.
I am the author of Embrace the Light-a womans story through poetry to touch your heart. I had a vision of Mother Mary at the age of seven. I was crying at the time for the abuse I was suffering from my mother and father. Mother Mary told me it was all for a purpose and that I would touch children. Incidently, I have worked with children for twenty years and miracously many of these children and young adults have turned their lives around. Like this book suggests God does exist and when we die God and our loved ones are all waiting for us with open arms. Treat others kind, trust God, live a spiritual life and Embrace the Light!

I have often wondered why I only felt the connection to something bigger than me when out in nature or pushing myself to my limits. This book actually goes into the science & spirituality of it all.
"He advocated going into nature, for an experience of the sacred...to reestablish your contact with the core of things, where it's really at...
The way back to the meaning is to go out into the wilderness with an open heart, "to feel it as a mystery...something totally outside your ordinary thought patterns. The Holy Other."
In other words, push yourself beyond what you think you are capable of and share the real rawness of the outdoors and there is no doubt you will come back a richer person.
