Giselle Steele covers desertification comprehensively, and puts a great deal of energy and insight into the causes and concerns of desertification. I've used this article consistently with my college students to bring attention to this alarming global problem. Articles like this one are hard to find. Highly recommended reading!

Lossing is directly responsible for the kindly view that the Shakers came to have in the eyes of America. This was the original article along with his sketches and illustrations which were finished out in water color before the wood engravers went to work. Absolutely astonishing details.

I highly recommend this book! It is Poe in his own words. This book is a brilliant answer to many off-the-wall interpretations of his theories and life. This book is essential to any serious study of Poe, and certainly for any journalist or writer who wants to read a master at work! Poe was not just a fiction writer. He was the first artist as critic in America's history. This book will allow you to see Poe as a man.

Patron Saint of Education?

Review Date: 2007-11-30
Edmondson's book is very well researched and very well cited and is in no way cherry picked so to speak in order to make his argument. Edmondson has used over a dozen of Dewey's most acclaimed writings to back up each of his claims. This book should be read everyone associated with education at all levels. The task involved to produce scholarship in which you challenge the father of American education makes for a very good read and urges greater debate on the subject of John Dewey. At the conclusion of reading Edmondson's book, two underlying themes appear to compel his criticism of John Dewey and his educational philosophy. The first theme is more theological than philosophical; Edmondson argues and incessantly reminds the reader that Dewey was adamant about keeping religion out of the public school because of its negative effects onfree thinking and discovery which hampers the development of a definitive socialist progressive laboratory. The second theme is an argument that Dewey's influence and subsequent philosophical domination over the public education system was a covert plan to governmentalize education with the purpose of correcting the social and political inadequacies of society, however, I would argue that laying the entire blame for the ills of education solely at the door step of John Dewey is the equivalent of laying blame to Martin Luther for the ills of Protestantism. Dewey's philosophy when placed into this historical context fits quite well and this is where I question Edmondson, I wish he would have placed more emphasis on the events which influenced Dewey and given the reader some sense of the historical context of that time.

La paradoja de la pena de muerte ¡extraordinario!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-22

'Colossus ' in a nutshell

Review Date: 2006-09-10
This article contains the major thesis of Ferguson's work, 'Colossus'. It argues that the United States is an Empire in denial of its historical role and responsibility. He argues that the United States should be more, and not less involved in the world , especially in economic and cultural ventures which aim at bringing greater freedom to the world.
In opposition to those who criticize the US for being over- extended and interfering, he argues that the U.S. needs to recognize its unique position and power and use it appropriately.
