Review of "A German Requiem"

Review Date: 2008-06-09
I have been a Robert Shaw fan for 47 years, and have attended several concerts he conducted. In addition, I have virtually EVERYTHING he ever recorded. I had the great good fortune to do a "sacred sing-a-long" under Shaw in which he did the German Requiem from an English score that he himself had adapted. I also sang the work under him in concert in Tallahassee in German. His English rendering of the German text is exact, yet not stilted. He marked scores like this for all the major works that the Chorale and the ASOC did. Unfortunately, he died about three weeks before he was to do this IN ENGLISH with the MTC. Knowing him, a world of work had already been done before his death, and Craig Jessop, who actually conducted the MTC in this recording was one of Shaw's students. Enunciation is tack-sharp, as are entrances and cut-offs. Craig Jessop worked under and learned well and much from Shaw. It shows in this sensitive interpretation of this glorious work that provides comfort for the grieving, rather than praying for the souls of the dead as in Catholic requiems. Get it, listen to it, and when your time of grief comes, listen and cry. It is heartachingly beautiful; it will help you grieve well. A beautiful masterpiece performed exquisitely, sung in English, and which should be in EVERY home.

A short but interesting article

Phyllis Chesler is a prominent feminist intellectual. So there ought to have been no problem when she addressed an audience of women at Barnard College in November, 2003 to discuss he book, "Women's Inhumanity to Women." Unfortunately, she wound up experiencing some of it herself; her speech went well, but she was heavily attacked in the question session afterwards. She was accused of being a defender of Israel. One of the women in the audience demanded that she denounce Ariel Sharon, but not Yasir Arafat, as a murderer. And in spite of her decades of work against racism, she was accused of being a racist herself, presumably for refusing to support Arab racism.

Well, is there a punch line? Yes. After Chesler gave her account of what happened to her, Barnard replied! The Director of Development Communications said that both she and those who shouted her down were out of line. This shows that Barnard has a more serious problem, and for that reason, I think this article is worth reading.

Awesome book by a provocative and diligent writer who remains the authority on stuff like this. This stuff he is an expert on, mostly. Dr. Holm- Hudson, who while an expert on stuff like this cannot find socks without holes, continues to amaze all his fans out there, mostly me and his family of a lovely wife, son and daughter, with gripping work like this, which he remains the ultimate expert of, providing you want to read stuff like this, of which Dr. Holm- Hudson is the pre- eminent authority.
Rock on!

Passionate defence of freedom
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-13
This riveting compilation of 26 essays includes contributions by Alan Greenspan, Nathaniel Branden and Robert Hessen. It is primarily a treatise on the moral aspects of capitalism. The themes revolve around human nature and mankind's relationship to existence. Capitalism is advocated because it is the only system compatible with the life of a rational being.

Rand claims that the classical defenders and modern apologists of capitalism are by default responsible for undermining it. In her view, they are unwilling or unable to fight the battle on moral-philosophical grounds.

The essays provide a plethora of gripping insights and novel angles. Rand detests the idea of using altruism to defend capitalism. She proposes rationality instead, with a ruling principle of justice.

I do not necessarily agree with her on this but I enjoy Rand's scathing criticism of conservatism's perceived fallacies. Her vitriolic dissection of the 3 conservative strains is highly amusing! She identifies and attacks the Religious and the Traditionalists but really unleashes the sharp edge of her scorn on those who defend capitalism from the argument of mankind's depravity.

In the essay Requiem For Man, she savages the encyclical Populorum Progressio by Pope Paul VI, in which she also rips apart the reactions to it by publications like the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Fortune magazine.

The book consists of two parts. The first is Theory And History, which includes essays on inter alia war, the persecution of big business, antitrust, gold and economic freedom, property status of the airwaves, and patents and copyrights.

Part two: Current State, includes essays on the anatomy of compromise, the art of smearing, rule by consensus as a form of fascism, and the student rebellion. The final two essays: Man's Rights and The Nature Of Government, appear in the appendix.

Whatever the flaws in Rand's Objectivist philosophy, this book remains a brilliant and unique defence of freedom and capitalism. Moreover, history has proved Rand a prescient thinker who was correct in many of her analyses.

Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal ranks among the very best of her non-fiction works. It is highly engaging, thought-provoking and often quite amusing. The book concludes with an index and a bibliography listing titles by Henry Hazlitt, Isabel Paterson and Ludwig von Mises, amongst others.
