excellent, reveals the significant role of the 19thC. patron
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1999-10-16
This well researched interdisciplinary study shows the somewhat complex relationship between the `artist' and the 19th century marketplace. The importance of patronage and the idiosyncracies of inidividual taste and control are carefully revealed. The north/south divide in terms of taste and preference for subject matter proves another interesting dimension in this fascinatingly detailed study. In short, there is so much, it is an excellent reference manual for anyone interested in this period of art history. You will want to return time and time again. It is just a shame, that although the quality of research, writing and production justifies its price, it will neverthesless be beyond the pocket of most students and enthusiasts of this important period of art history.

a credible book to credit great artwork
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-08
I found this book ot be an excellent asset to my collection of modern british art. I thought that the large amount of content was covered thouroghly, but not drawn out to get stale(just like the artwork itself, discussed). This is a very important book because it recaps all of what is happening with the yBa movement in the artworld. This book is for anyone who wants to be on top of the world of modern art.

This text provides a theoretical framework for good practice in the art of dance in education in which the processes of creating, performing and appreciating dances develop skills, knowledge and understanding in dance and contribute towards artistic, aesthetic and cultural education. The first section of the book looks at a combination of old models and new practice - referred to as the "mid-way" approach - and gives the theoretical basis. The second, third and fourth sections describe the theoretical framework of good practice in dance education in primary, secondary and higher education. The fifth section contains further lesson plans, schemes of work, lecture programmes and criteria of assessment across the sectors.

good history, beautiful book
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-28
My personal interest in reading this book was the Elizabethan period; but the book pulls one into all its eras with descriptive, memorable writing and beautiful layout -- paintings, photos, and drawings that explain and enliven its words. I'm not sure I would recommend it as a cookbook (the book is huge, like a heavy coffee table book, and there aren't many recipes); but there are recipes to try if the cooking descriptions get your mouth watering. A great book that's worth buying.

Reveals Doyle's many other accomplishments
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-12-10
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) is best known as the creator of the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes. This outstanding biography by Hesketh Pearson (and wonderfully narrated by Tim Pigott-Smith) reveals Doyle's many other accomplishments, including how he came to the profession of medicine, his activities as a war correspondent, his eventual interest in spiritualism, as well as his many other writings. Ironically, Doyle felt his Sherlock Holmes stories to be the least of his literary works while prizing his now largely forgotten major historical novels. Here too is the story of Doyle as a husband, including the death of his first wife and the enduring affection of his second marriage. A true "rags to riches" tale, Arthur Conan Doyle: A Life is a technically flawless production with musical interludes and cues that is a "must" for anyone who has ever thrilled at one of his immortal stories.

Arthur The King: The Theme Behind the Legends
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-06-07
From the DJ back cover: "Who was King Arthur? Variously depicted as the boy who drew the sword from the stone, Celtic freedom fighter pitted against the invading Saxons, and refined and noble monarch married to the beautiful Queen Guenever [sic], he has for centuries inspired storytellers of Europe.

Graeme Fife traces the development of Arthurian literature from its emergence in the mist-filled valleys of the Celtic heartlands of Britain to the candle-lit-banqueting halls of the court of Eleanor of Aquitaine. He examines the great Arthurian themes of chivalry, courtly love, hunting, heraldry and pageantry, magic and the Holy Grail and argues convincingly that the rise of the romances was inextricably linked to the development of the Christian Crusading movement. Ever present is the immortal figure of Arthur himself, once and future king.

Just thought you should know something about the book you are thinking about buying.
Actually a very interesting book.
