My wife and I purchased this book to search for a ranch vacation. It has been on our coffee table ever since. There are about 200 pages worth of color pictures. Some of these resorts are just beautiful. We can't wait to actually go on our vacation. This book has been great in helping us plan our trip.

Fantastic, realistic guide for ranch vacationing!

Gift of Wings is perhaps the most powerful and inspiring of the hundreds of books I've read. The fascinating story of a wheelchair traded for wings on 5000 miles journey across Canada. Breathtaking and surprisingly original aerial photographs of a stunningly diversified landscape . Beautiful, philosophical, witty, poetic and joyful. A book with a soul that is sure to touch yours.

Carl Hiebert has freed not only himself but all those who feel the handicap of wingless birth, to soar and glide through the beautiful spaciousness of Canada. The fascinating story of his injury and recovery of spirit to leave the wheel chair behind as he climbed into the skys of Canada with camera in hand, will forever challenge and delight me, an aviator and current healer of injured bodies and minds. "Breathtaking" is a real understatement for this story of beauty

Unbelievable, a great gift!!!

Long recognized as the master teacher to all the teachers who are now so famous on tv, Jacobs here has a mighty instruction book.

Based on his revolutionary idea of ball flight feedback, one can easily find what pattern one's shots are taking, then apply the remedies listed for that ailment.

His two turns and a swing is so simple, but profound. If there is one swing thought I fall back on, this is it. Jacobs concepts are so easy to follow and apply. Soon it will seem as though one can diagnose on the spot and correct.

Monumental classic which more golfers could benefit from using.

Excellent book! As an avid golfer, I've always had to tinker with my swing mechanics on an almost weekly basis to maintain my game. One quick lesson from this book, which simply suggested changing ball position (and offering an explanation of why) was the perfect fix. Now I am long and straight and loving it! I've been loaning the book to friends and telling them to quit paying for worthless lessons.

Tips for Jacobs' fans

After knowing about Jacobs, I searched the web for some material. I ordered Golf Doctor,Practical Golf and all the video series. Jacobs' main concept is that, whatever you think or do, the main reality of golf is the effect and trajectory you give the ball when you hit it with the face of your club. Thus, analising the flight of the ball, you should be able to know what you did wrong. Beatiful concept! No wonder Jacobs' approach to golf has granted him a legion of followers. Not too silly, nor too technical, it's effective!

Here is my advise:

-BUY BOTH.- To get the core concepts from Jacobs, you can avoid buyin the new "50 lessons" book if you prefer so, but I suggest you to buy Practical Golf together with Golf Doctor, so that you have a general reference book (Practical golf), and a guide for any ball flight (Golf Doctor).
-TRY TO GET THE VIDEOS.- They will save you throusands of dollars in lessons! They are simple and wise and you can feel the teaching approach of the master himself! I do not find the "short game" video as good as the Wfull swing" one, wich is a masterpiece. Get as well the faults and correction ones.

From the very first page Luard captivates the reader with his vivid and passionate portrayal of royal intrigue and sheer adventure. The tale begins in ancient Abyssinia where the queen of the nile is impregnated via sinister and mysterious means. She lives in affluent splendour among lust and savagery. In a neighbouring kingdom, the author invites us to witness the kidnapping of the royal twins Toomi and Mamkinga. As Luard's intricate tapestry unfolds, we follow the twins' separation and painfully unjust descent into slavery. Their journeys are wrought with countless horrific events embedded in the constant longing each twin feels for being reunited with the other half of their being. Powerful and viscious figures forever loom in the shadows of this richly depicited tale, including the brutal arab Acab Saat, who is to be the dagger that attempts to shred the very fabric of Africa's kingdoms. Throughout Luard's epic we also delve into the faraway shores of Ireland, where Jamie Oran surpasses his devastating past to venture into Africa, and finds his destiny at the source of the nile.

Luard has a talent for relentlessly drawing the reader into the story until they gasp for breath, eyes bulging in wonderment at the brutality humankind is capable of in the context of this historical and cultural landscape. At times i was convinced that Luard must have lived in Africa to write with such vision and complexity about this exotic realm. Although the journey extends from Africa to the United Kingdom, Luard is consistent in the integrity and resilience that is found in our heroes, and the same demonic cruelty in our villains. His statements about human nature are constant: insecurity and lust make for a dangerous combination. The characters' heartwrenching struggles are upsetting in their realism, yet are essential components of Luard's image of an epic battle for freedom and love.

"Henry hears the honking first. He circles the pond, around and a half, sending up splashes of warm spring mud all over his winter coat. Henry knows the geese are coming. And then I know it, too..." This is the best time of year for our young narrator, as the Canada geese arrive back at her family's pond, each spring. But this year she notices one of the geese has a badly injured foot, and when she visits the pond the next day, the goose's foot is gone. There she stands all alone, separated from the rest of the flock. The other geese have shunned her. "I never thought geese could be so mean." The little girl wants to take care of the poor footless goose, feed her, pet her, be her friend, but her mother and father warn her not to. "A wild goose has to learn to live with her weakness. Or she won't live at all." As the summer slides towards autumn, the little girl notices that the goose has grown stronger and more capable. It can balance and hobble on its stump, search for food, and swim. But she still worries that the goose won't be strong enough to push off and fly south for the winter, and will be left behind to die. And then one day when she comes home from school, all the geese are gone, and so is her little crippled friend. The winter months pass and the girl thinks often of the goose, and then one spring day, soon after she spots the first robin, she hears the familiar honking. "They land together. A couple of geese. Honking and flapping. Drinking and bathing. Combing each other's feathers. One is larger than the other, his neck as thick as a fire hose when he stretches it out to protect her-the goose with one foot..." Inspired by an actual event, Cari Best's touching and captivating story, as seen through the eyes of a grade school girl, is filled with drama, courage, determination, and triumph. Her engaging and evocative text is complemented by Holly Meade's bold and vibrant paper collage illustrations, that bring the wonders and wildness of nature to life. And together, word and art paint a vivid, empathetic, and uplifting portrait of an unlikely and endearing heroine. Perfect for youngsters 4-8, Goose's Story is a heartwarming tale of nature and survival, and is definitely one of the best new picture books of 2002.

After watching the PBS series in July, I decided to buy the book. (I already own Great Lodges of the National Parks.) Not only are all of the spots in the series here, but MANY more. They all have wonderful photos and even better stories. It was touching to hear once more about Ken Jones (the first show of the series is in his memory).

Anyone who loves spectacular mountain scenery and historic lodges should grab this book! Not only does the book contain the well-known spots (Banff Springs Hotel, Chateau Lake Louise and Jasper Park Lodge) but there's an entire section on lodges you can ONLY hike or ride horseback to. Barnes other books all feature American lodges, so this trip into the Canadian Rockies is a special visual treat full of history and plenty of sentiment. There are fold-out pages for real panoramic shots and a neat little guide in the back.

Great pictures, informative text, and a tempting vacation guide (the book comes with a pocket guide showing prices, phone numbers, directions, photography tips, and other information). Describes the architectural and cultural evolution of the greatest lodges in Canada - most are those lodges built by the railways or by early 20th century mountaineers. All your guests will pick it up.

These stories of the North American prairie lands provide a rich blend of generations of voices and stories of natural history and the land, blending poems, stories and essays with insights on both native peoples, geography and wildlife. The result is a multi-faceted collection which doesn't neatly fit into singular categories of natural history, geography or culture; but which embraces them all.

A Masterpiece on Man and Nature

Beautifully -- in places lyrically -- written, this small volume makes a compelling case for preservation of the natural beauty that once prevailed throughout North America, and which now has become all too rare. Never straying far from her main theme (the life of Grey Owl), Jane Billinghurst draws us into the passion and dedication of her subject, leading us reflect on environmental questions not as dry policy issues, but as ones that can relate to an almost spiritual connection between the individual and his natural surroundings. Must reading for historians, environmentalists, and those with an interest in Canada, this insightful book is thoroughly rewarding for the general reader as well. Very highly recommended.

It has been said, "one cannot judge a book by it's cover", however, we must also keep in mind that there are no absolutes as this book is a story which is depicted, in large measure, by the cover. Sensitive, warm, and poetic presentation of the life and contributions of Grey Owl. The photos exceptional in quality, and accurate as to life and times of the era. These are real people, places, and times that were a part of North American history. The manner in which sayings and aspects of Grey Owl are available as the story unfolds are done in such a manner I think you get two books for the price of one. I read the book from cover to cover the first time then re-read the white pages only, and then followed by reading the tan colored pages. Either way it is easy, fast, and enjoyable. I think the author did an excellent job in demonstrating the efforts of Grey Owl. He was an interesting fellow who had a vision and purpose in life which is so unique that a major moving picture has been make about him as well as four documantaries. Jane Billinghurst has created a work which makes possible an interpretation of the content, by the reader, as it is a factual and well documented treatise. There have been several books published about Grey Owl, in my opinion this is, like the Land of Shadows (Don Smith), is a must read for a deeper appreciation of this most remarkable fellow, Grey Owl.

During a recent trip to Alaska where I was photographing Grizzly bears, I wanted to acquire a book or two that would be good representations of professional bear photography. I looked at many (and there are many good ones). Of the outstanding books I previewed, none were more professional and complete than Ward's. He is the consummate naturalist, always getting his pictures, but never to the detriment of the animal. He has many interesting stories to tell, and he tells them well. The cover photo is fantastic, and it is rivaled by many more inside the book. I have looked through this book several times since I returned from my trip, and it is a fine reminder of the Great Land... and a great animal. Thank you Mr. Ward.

Kennan Ward: "Grizzlies in the wild":This is the stuff that gets a "couch potato" out to the campsites! Nature at it's extreme, Indian legend, bears so huge and unique that they are known far and wide by their names alone, Carniverous and dangerous, the author respects them all. The tenacity of ward's pursuits and his dedication as a photographer, brings us one of the most informative, entertaining, inspiring and picturesque books that I've read in a very long time.
