If you are interested in what "real" economics is all about--and by real I mean those economic thoughts that are proven by experiments rather than just theories--this is a must book for you. I found nearly all of the articles very useful and well written. I recommend that you start with the chapter of 1989 written by Reinhard Selten, because it explain economics in a very pleasantly humor-driven way and continue with 1990, written by Vernon L. Smith. After these two chapters, read any of the others in any order you see it fit.

I loved the book! When I finish my PhD (soon, actually), this book will be a required reading for my students!

This book was designed to provide the whole poems or literary statements that were either read in a movie or at the funeral of someone famous. Because it is so neatly compiled it is very easy to find one or several that will suit one's needs.

This book provides the undergraduate as well as the graduate student with an introduction to fundamental problem solving in gas reservoir engineering through practical equations and methods. Although much oilwell technology applies to gas wells, many differences exist. This book helps students understand and recognize these differences to enable handling gas reservoir problems appropriately

Along with the images of young soldiers staring at us through the veil of time we are given images of monuments and cemeteries when they, like the soldiers they honor, were young. Most of these statues and obelisks are still standing, still honoring the Confederate soldier, though now aged with a patina that only time can create. Dr. Wiggins has gone to enormous lengths to capture for all time the unique tributes Georgia has made to its soldiers of long ago.

Excellent Overview of the problems facing the World
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-18
This little book is a series of reflections on the broblems of all of us getting along in the world as the world shrinks because of communications, transport, international companies -- i.e. Globalization. It is an excellent analysis of the seemingly unending religious friction goin on in the world.

Rupp concentrates on problems that are immense: religion, refugees, education, medical care. Then in a surprising turn he asks a series of other thinkers to comment on his views. They are likewise concerned withese big issues, but have somewhat differing views on the problems and on his proposed solutions.

One very interesting point, it has appeared to me that the Christians have become more tolerant of other religions. That is to say, we don't see Methodists killing Baptists. Rupp points out that this is an American view, and Christians against whatever in other parts of the world are not difficult to find.

The downside I see in the book is that it does not look at the future enough. For instance there is no entry for any of these words in the index: AIDS, Energy, Oil, Malaria, TB.

This is a fantastic book. It has excellent insights to the private lives of Grace and Calvin Coolidge and their family. While it does touch upon the political, the focus is on the personal family life. Learn about their personal likes, dislikes, quirks, clothing, past times and more. If you don't like politics you will enjoy this book for while world events are mentioned in passing they are only mentioned as time lines in relationship to what was going on in the Coolidge's lives at the time. Well written, easy to read and hard to put down. I came away with many great insights as to who the Coolidge's were as people, not politicians. 5 stars.

I gave this book to my girlfriend, now my wife, in the early eighties.

Recently my in-laws found it in their bookshelves and returned it to us.

I reread it and realized it is an extremely well written book by a slightly odd character who has a great eye.

Most amazingly I realized that the book had been the source for a few stories that I still fondly remembered, but for which I had long forgotten the source.

Now over twenty years later I actually visited some of the places Mr. Stinnett described and realize his descriptions were dead on.

This book lists all the various models of Porter locomotives made from the earliest days. It also gives information on where various locomotives were sold and to whom. The later and recent locations of many of them are also listed.
I recommend this book to anyone doing research on railroad locomotives in general, or specifically on Porter locomotives. It is an interesting resource book on this subject and should hold an important place in anyone's library.

What a wonderful book! What the men of WW II or any war for that matter faced!. this book gives GREAT detail! IT is based around Richard Lewis' experience as an Airforce man that gets shot down and travels his way through the underground with help from the people and finally gets caught and gets taken to one of Hitler's camps and tells of his fear and what psychological games were played with them- from wearing old bloody airforceman uniforms- to no heat or blasting them with it! THe details are wonderful in this book.. you can invision each and every phase this brave man - along with many others faced and lived to tell about it and share with his family and the rest of the world! Definitley recommend it!

Henry Adams as a critic of southern culture
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-10
In his "Education," Henry Adams declared: "Strictly, the Southerner had no mind; he had temperament. He was not a scholar; he had no intellectual training; he could not analyze an idea, and he could not even conceive of admitting two." It is this "slur" which Professor O'Brien (author of the awesome "Conjectures of Order" and other tomes on Southern intellectual history) posits at the center of this most interesting volume. So,upon what experiences did Adams base his rather pessimistic assessment? One source of contact with the South was his grandmother Louisa Catherine Johnson Adams, originally from Maryland, wife of John Quincy Adams. Much space is devoted to Louisa, perhaps too much, but this chapter does afford an interesting perspective on the formative stages of young Henry. More pertinent is the chapter on Henry Adams period of living in Washington and how this afforded him first-hand opportunities to encounter Southern traditions and attitudes. Any student of Adams will find this chapter irresistible. Another chapter ("American Types") focuses upon Charles Francis Adams, Jr., Henry's elder brother, who served extensively in the Civil War, and his potential influence. However, there is much fascinating information in this chapter aside from CFA, Jr., including a discussion of some of Henry's earlier writings which related to the South (the Randolph biography, e.g.) and his two novels. Finally, the author focuses upon Adams' later works (Mont-Saint-Michel and Chartres and the Education) to probe the mature Adams view on Southern culture. Along the way there are interesting detours, such as some comments about W.J. Cash's "Mind of the South" and why there is definitely some sensitivity and defensiveness on this topic which linger even until today. Many interesting illustrations are included, among them some fine pictures taken by Clover Adams. The notes are extremely valuable. I don't know if we ever get to the point of completely understanding what causative factors shaped Adams' views of the South, or even if we are exposed to the entire range of his views, but this book is absolutely essential for gaining an invaluable insight into Adams.
