An outstanding collection of vignettes that can be read not only by those in the health care professions, but also by those who just have questions about how physicians and clients can communicate around sensitive issues. I have used it as a text for nursing students with great success and shared it with friends diagnosed with a serious illness. I strongly recommend it for anyone who is concerned about quality of life at the end of life

Dr. Quill is best known for his infamous "Diane" who chose to end her life in a unorthodox way. Dr. Quill does not agree with physician assisted suicide, however, he does believe that compassion in dying and allowing one to make their own destiny in the face of uncontrollable pain will alleviate much suffering. The most common reason for suicide in those with medical conditions that are incurable are is they want to die in control and without pain. It is possible with the right medical care and if it results in hastening ones death...so be it. Dr. Kevorkian uses an unorthodox procedure that at times is barbaric. Dr. Quill is one who will help you and make you comfortable. He shares his experiences with several of his patients in a way that is humane and loving.

This book is compassionately and sensitively written. It is clear and concise, especially for a woman who is grieving the loss of a baby through miscarriage. It has been an instrument of healing for hundreds of women I have cared for and counseled. It also is a wonderful information guide for those who desire to know about miscarriage.

This book helped me so much when my Grandmother died. It gave me an understanding of the grief process and the stages of grief in an easy to read manner. It helped me know that what I was feeling was part of the normal healing process. After reading this book I have been able to have more compassion and insight into others who are grieving from the loss of someone or something they loved. Everyone should get a chance to read this book for we all grieve at sometime in our lives and have people close to us who we want to support with their grief.

This book describes the process of caring for dying family and/or friends - something that more of us are likely to do in the future for various reasons. Every story is unique and gripping. This book is really helpful to those of us to have to deal with the physical and emotional needs of our loved ones, and have to take care of the healthy at the same time.

This book is full if insights and important information for those of us experiencing the deterioration of loved ones. Before I read it, I was feeling pangs of guilt for not becoming my parents' full-time caregiver. From the the book's accounts of this, I realized that I didn't have the physical or emotional energy or the resources necessary to care for them at home. The guilt pangs for not doing more are much farther apart and less compelling. Now I'm hoping for a sequel about trying to manage professional health care for a loved one...

An absolute MUST for every person. When we think of loss, we can tend to limit it to the loss of a loved one. However we may have lost our lifestyle which we were so comfortable with, our home, lost our dreams, our passions, our motivation for life, our job, forcing us too accept realities that are painful, which paralyse us from moving forward, bringing out anger, frustration and depression. Unless these losses are effectively dealt with, it will be hard to move forward and embrace the new things that lie before us. This book is an excellent tool in equiping a person through the grieving process towards wholeness and new strength. A book for life!

Sacred Trust does an excellent job of describing Dr. Hollenbeck's experiences and lessons, and more importantly their importance in medicine. It blends humor and serious topics fluidly. Afterwards I had a better understanding of what to expect from the medical profession, and it gave me the confidence to demand it. I wish all my doctors (past, present, and future) would read this. I intend on purhasing this book for all my friends in med school.

I bought this book for my daughter who is almost 12yrs old. It looks like a young child's book, but the words are meant for all! Must read for all child survivors of suicide. The book explains that what happened is not the child's fault. Which many children go through a stage of feeling the suicide was their fault. Children need to know from other sources than the ones who love them that it's not their fault - this book does that

As a trained psychologist and former Children's Program Coordinator at a local Hospice, I was very pleased to discover this compassionate and supportive book for children who have experienced the loss of a loved one due to suicide. The issue is sensitively handled, and practical and healthy ways of coping are facilitated. A helpful support for families faced with this loss and an INVALUABLE tool for all professionals who work with children and loss. A great resource for school personnel to have on hand as well!

One of the few books totally dedicated to the subject of stillbirth. Many couples who have experienced stillbirth share their pain, emotions, fears, making the necessary arrangements, how they dealt with life afterwards and the next pregnancy. This book shared many statistics on stillbirth and how it affects the family. A very comprehensive book. This book also included information on support groups, giving the reader a chance to understand what is said and done at support group meetings. A great book for those who wonder how they will ever survive the stillbirth of their child.

The author describes in gret detail his struggles and satisfactions working with AIDS patients in New York. As he continues his work he finds need to look into his own background and discovers the details of his father's death when he was a child. A heartwarming portrayal of how life experiences often unrecognized motivate us in our choice of profession and the way we carry out our responsibilities. A heart warming book. Morris Wessel, M.D.
