For a slim volume, this book is one of the most lucid and thorough discussions of poetry and the issues surrounding the writing of poetry that a person can buy. Direct and insightful, it's a quick read and worth the while of any writer, reader, or poetic dabbler.

An Alternative to Irish Tunes for the Folk Harper
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-20
Yes, there are OTHER tunes a folk harper can play! While the focus of the past ten years has been on Irish music, Sylvia Woods reminds us that celtic-type harps originated in Scotland and were played there in antiquity.

The book has about 50 tunes, each one arranged for a beginner and also for more experienced players. So, you can choose the level at which you are most comfortable without worrying that the knowledge and technique required to play the tune (slides, glissandos, cross-overs/unders, etc) will prevent you from playing it well.

My goal is to learn all of the easy arrangements and then progress to the more difficult ones.

Sylvia Woods has ferreted out a great selection of old tunes from Scotland (many from Robert Burns) as an alterative to Irish music. A great book to have, if only to remind yourself that the harp has been played for hundreds of years in other countries as well as Ireland! Also, it's nice to be able to play something unexpected, if you play for others.

76 Disney Songs for the Harp by Sylvia Woods.

Lever and pedal harp players will find many favorites in this book of Disney Songs by Sylvia Woods. I have been playing the harp for 14 years and find these pieces challenging and very rewarding once mastered. As I reviewed the 76 titles included in the book it brought back memories of my childhood. The songs are grouped by decade starting with beautifully arranged pieces from Snow White ( the 30's) and concluding with Beauty and the Beast ( the 90"s). I have yet to find a book of harp pieces arranged by Sylvia Woods that does not touch the heart.

Gayest Doctor Who moments. The Cartmel Plan. Etc., etc., etc.

If you want a guidebook, or even just a set of essays and opinions, about the sixth and seven doctors episodes, then you need this book. Obsessive doesn't even begin to describe the coverage. Heck, get all of the "About Time" books for the complete Dr. Who fandom experience.

The great mercy of God gave me a significant amaount of time to study and devour a number of works on the topic of "entire sanctification." This book is a great starting point for examining the issue in the light of the scriptures.

The Textbook of Acupuncture Therapy

This is the first truly comprehensive textbook of Chinese acupuncture in the English language.

The author, who practices acupuncture and osteopathy, describes in a clear and straightforward manner the complete range of acupuncture techniques, with anatomical references to the structure of the human body.

Dr. Austin presents through text and many detailed illustrations the precise locations of all acupuncture points along the 12 organ meridians (or pathways of energy), as well as the points on the two major vessel meridians. When manipulated by needle, massage, percussion, or Moxa, these points can help balance deficiencies and excesses within the body.

The text is well suited for doctors, nurses, students, and others interested in understanding this art and science of healing.

My kids love this book! We have to read it everyday at nap time. I think it is a wonderful parable about how as long as we have God with us we don't need anything else. It has been good stepping stone for futher converstions with my 4 and 3 year old.

I was there when this book had it's lauch. My grandfather's picture is prominently displayed on one of the pages and a few of his quotes as well as mention of my great grandmother singing.

The tales bring me back to the greatest generation and the life my grandparents endured. A majority of the memories are from one Adirondack Woodsmen but many of their stories and songs are fantastic. Straight from the early 1900's and taken shortly before most of these men passed on.

If the author is still alive and reads this thank you. Do you still have the tapes from your interviews? I'd love to hear my grandfather on tape!
