If you are at all interested in Jack Nicklaus and can't, by time or distance, visit his museum in Columbus, Ohio (on the campus of Ohio State University), then this book will be a nice visual replacement. Well organized, this book follows Jack's entire career as well as his relationships with his teacher, Jack Grout, his parents Charlie and Helen Nicklaus and his wife Barbara. Especially nice are several pages of reproduced "mementos" in cellophaned envelopes for easy retrival and review.

I would recommend this book highly to all golfers who have any admiration for the Golden Bear.

A "Must" for Those Who Admire The Golden Bear

It sounds "trite" and simple to say it, but this book is a "must" for those who love golf and admire the qualities Jack Nicklaus brought to the game, talent, work ethic, competitiveness, success, and class. The epitome of what the game is meant to be.

There are other, more indepth, books on Jack Nicklaus, but this one has it all, enough to appreciate the man, who is, what he stands for and his journey, a journey that has been a credit to the game of golf and has inspired many of us who have followed his career and the values and principles he has demonstrated so effectivly.

There are many replica mementos, a letter from Tiger Woods, copies of his scorecards, Masters invitations and such that give this book a nice touch, a nice feel. Overall it is a comprehensive keepsake album of Jack, his career and the game of golf in his day.

Simply put: "A must" for those who love golf and admire the Golden Bear.

Review of Rebecca Woods guide to hiking in Jackson, WY area

Of the four books I read on the subject, this one was by far the best. It describes hikes that are "family friendly" as well as those which are more advanced and appropriate for hikers with experience in the high country. There are many hikes mentioned which are relatively unknown, and not on the popular "maintained" trails of the Tetons. Of the few which I had time to take, her directions were quite accurate. For someone visiting the Jackson Hole area who loves to hike, especially in the high country, this book is excellent.

The new edition (1999) of this book includes more hikes than before and covers the entire area surrounding Jackson. The descriptions and directions are easy to read and understand. The author also includes the elevation changes and difficulty of the hikes. I like this book because it covers a wide area and many popular and less popular hikes in and around Jackson Hole. The index also includes more place names and destinations than the table of contents, which is great. I recommend this book because, unlike many others, it includes hikes in Grand Teton National Park as well as those outside the park.

Opening Volume I of "21st" places the viewer in a world of quiet contemplation, made possible by the rich, luxurious photographic reproductions and insightful commentary found throughout. The tactile beauty of each page invites us to keep turning, while the content only makes us wish for more. Further volumes will answer this wish, incorporating the same attention to detail that is sorely lacking in other photographic publications. The annual publication of "21st" is the antithesis to a society dominated by consumables, `dot coms', and digitalization. Great art takes time and "21st" is no exception; the tri-tone reproductions inside are breathtaking, while cover photographs by Keith Carter and John Dugdale(Vol. II) are worthy of display. Add to this some of the finest writers on the subject of photography, and it is clear why a lavish publication such as "21st" takes time. This is a book to be opened again and again, much like the finest photograph demands repeated viewing. One will never tire of "21st The Journal of Contemporary Photography" because it is not only meant to be looked at and read but more importantly, to be savored and treasured.

Great Psychoanalytical Book about Kate's Roles
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-04-19
This book is probably one of the only books on Kate to not focus on her life, but on her movies. The author analyzes each one so intricately and finds how Hepburn was a premiere feminist in each one. It's interesting when you read about his analysis of several Tracy/Hepburn movies, as well as "The Philadelphia Story." The movies, according to the author, try to teach Hepburn a lesson and make her conform to the standards of the patriarchy. Interesting to note, the author also compares and contrasts several films of Bette Davis, Bacall/Bogart, and Astaire/Rogers with Hepburn's films as well. Excellent read- very professional. The best part about this book probably is that it's loaded with glossy, beautiful pictures from almost every movie Kate made.

A sharp and thought-provoking marvel!

Review Date: 2001-06-19
This is a superb critical evaluation of all of Hepburn's film roles until 1984. It is the only book about Hepburn that did not disappoint me. Hepburn biographies and studies have often tended to "normalize" Hepburn (eg. Kate - Charles Higham) or rationalize some contradictory aspects of her personality (eg. A Remarkable Woman - Anne Edwards) based on *conclusions drawn from* material that is in media circulation. Andrew Britton, in refreshing contrast, meticulously examines the implied beliefs and thought processes *behind* such material. Hepburn, through Britton's book, emerges in an arena all her own, resisting all attempts at conventional compartmentalization.

I absolutely agree with his views on many movies, say, "Woman of the Year", where Hepburn's presence in the title role suggests an independence and authority which the film's contrived, though expertly acted, ending, tries (unsuccessfully) to suppress. His views on the "violence of the performance" in "Summertime", which makes "the film's project untenable", are also very apt.

Apart from a thorough examination of Hepburn's roles with Tracy, Grant and others, this book makes pointed comparisons between the spinster roles of Bette Davis and Hepburn. It also has a very original discussion on The Philadelphia Story (Hepburn), Ninotchka (Greta Garbo), and Destry Rides Again (Marlene Dietrich), which according to Britton, were attempts to humanize (and hence compromise) its three female stars, who had previously been labelled "box-office poison".

For fans of Hepburn, for serious followers of films, and for all those who are concerned about the hidden ideas that films (sometimes inadvertently) propagate into the filmgoer's mind, this is an objective, insightful book which should not be missed.

The Kennedy Assassination (Representing American Events)

The Kennedy assassination has spawned its own conspiracy industry. Aptly described as a "bottomless pit", it is equally a many-headed hydra, with each claim and counterclaim giving birth to dozens of others. And yet among the mountains of material there are few--if any--books that examine the event with the clarity of Peter Knight's book. Knight addresses both the official and unofficial versions, the significance of the assassination in US history, and its impact on American culture, in calm, rational prose that doesn't get bogged down in the excessive detail that threatens to capsize so much writing on the subject. This concise and extremely readable book contains probably all you need to know about the Kennedy assassination. Highly recommended.

A comprehensive history of the event and its enduring legacy
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-24
Peter Knight's scholarly book is surprisingly comprehensive given that it's a relatively short work. It succeeds in being both a fine introduction to the case and in being an incisive and fascinating history of the assassination in both American and World history and indeed in popular culture. The book provides an interesting and very reasonable and balanced assessment of most of the key aspects of the case - a summary of the Warren Report and all other official investigations, the major conspiracy theories, the problems with eye witness reliability, the so called problems with the Single Bullet Theory, the fatal head shot and issues with the flawed autopsy and so on.

But the book goes much further than providing a brief but very succinct history of the case, it also provides an excellent record of key works on the assassination together with some highly interesting observations regarding the event in news, fiction, film and even art. More over the author also finds the space to explain how and why the event has had such an impact on modern America and suggests that actually some degree of exaggeration has occurred in respect of the events true impact at the time. The book also examines the concept of the "conspiracy theory" in principle and asks if the Kennedy assassination has in fact changed the nature of conspiracy thinking giving some considerable thought to Oliver Stone's film JFK and the unfortunate effect that that film has had - that a significant percentage of the American public believe Oliver Stones work to be an accurate rendition of the event, which it clearly is not.

It is actually quite rare to get a book on this subject that is essentially neutral, but still maintains a tantalizing glimpse into what author Vincent Bugliosi calls a "bottomless pit". When you consider that Peter Knight covers just about every angle on this case in some 180 pages, it is quite an achievement. If you are conspiracy buff I'd recommend this book as a dose of common sense. Peter Knight doesn't offer a personal conclusion in terms of was there or was there not a conspiracy, but its clear the author's intention was to provide a thorough assessment of the event and its place in history from 1963 to date in a resoundingly non sensationalist manner - frankly a breath of fresh air when you consider the utter none sense that has been written about the case.

Whilst the author is critical of the Warren Commission in respect of its failure to clarify and set to rest a good many of what would become perceived "unanswered questions", I rather suspect he believes Oswald acted alone, but that conclusion is not the aim of the book, its rather to educate the reader and bring some degree of common sense into a subject that has now been somehow lost into such a huge body of work that its almost impossible for any one, bar the dedicated student of the case, to make some degree of semblance as to what happened when Kennedy was shot and to understand the difference between the event itself and what it has become in popular culture - something far greater, far more reaching than it was. The style of writing is engaging and almost humerous at times. A resounding accomplishment - it joins some four hundred books on the subject in my collection and I would place it high high on the my list of recommended reading.

The instructions for the 25 projects are well written and illustrated for the beginner as well as those how have done needlepoint for years. The color photographs are of high quality, making the finished projects extremely enticing to make. Each project not only has a description of the item, but also a well written brief history of the origin of the specific item to be stitched. The color charts was well illustrated and easy to follow. Thirteen pages are dedicated to materials and techniques from how to make the first needlepoint stitch to framing, hanging, finishing, making knotted fringes and tassels. This area of the book is a Big Plus! One last comment, This is truly a great needlepoint book!

I recently read KNDU187 and found it to be an exciting science fiction novel. It is not like all the other books on the market. It challenges you to think about the story line and where it may be headed. Even though it is set in the future, the people are real and feel like they could be your neighbors. Dr. White and his wife manage to communicate thru the gaming machines in a casino. See if you can figure out how they did this.

The story also involves the politics of the nation relative to the people as it always seems to do. It becomes clear that we are not all created equal. See who makes the final decision and who gets the benefits.

The book was written before NASA sent out their press release about the Sun. Make sure to read the NASA web sit as listed on the back cover of the book as it details the current thinking about the Sun and what may happen to it.

Candice Bergen has always handled herself with style. She is very much her father's daughter. Both of whom had reserved mannerisms, had difficulty of expression; yet had great admiration of one another.
Her bearing and appearance indicates that she is a lady. She has always been a rugged individualist with a sense of humor that could make one blush, Candice has a little-seen side that the public isn't privy to.
As I read her autobiography, although she is of my mother's generation, and I younger. Despite her father's vocation, although he was very, very accomplished, he was conservative. Which, is how he raised his two children. Like my life, she grew up privy of privileged. Attending Westlake School for Girls in Bel Air at a time when it still had a boarding school, which was abandoned not long after she graduated. Yet with many changes long ago, propriety still matters there. She went east to college. To my great surprise experienced the same thing as I did not very long ago. She studied art history, and had a passion for photography. She is infinitely sophisticated and is extremely knowledgeable about art and comedy. As she wrestled with the dilemma of leaving college without a degree. Candice has proven that having a college degree doesn't automatically mean a girl can step right into the job of her dreams.
To open the right doors, often what's needed is a business skill your prospective boss can use. And, as her motto of life is the old legend: "follow your bliss." Which, is great advice whatever someone chooses to do in life. One should never say, 'I might have, when they never even tried.' Candice appreciates life.
