SOA - reality today!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-02
Being a student of business and information management, I had heard about SOA before, both from a technical perspective (XML, Web services) and from a business standpoint (shiny visions of flexible processes). This book is like the missing link between the two areas! It does not only tell you that SOA will change organizations but it also shows *how* exactly this is going to happen. The authors describe all relevenat aspects, starting from organizational change down to the SAP tools that can be used to model processes and to create your own service-oriented applications.
What surprised me most was that ESA - SAP's flavour of SOA - is business-ready today! This is illustrated with numerous real-world examples from a wide range of corporations. The case studies give a good idea of useful ESA applications and show how the transition to a service-oriented infrastructure could take place.
"Enterprise SOA" is suited for everybody interested in information management, even without any previous knowledge in the SOA field. After reading through the book, you'll finally know how SOA is changing the business environment and how SAP is bringing the concepts to life based on open standards. Although you won't know every technical detail, you'll have learned enough to plan your organization's future in a service-oriented world.

Very Helpful Book on SOA

This is a very helpful book on SOA because it provides the business case for SOA, an excellent technical overview, and real-life examples of how to use it.

While it is written from an SAP perspective, any IT group that is investigating SOA will find value in this book -- as it describes how SOA impacts different layers of the IT stack (from persistence to business objects, to process orchestration, and uesr interfaces). It also provides actual case studies.

Monica Wood's story is set in a small town which is affected by the closure of a local paper mill. Wood follows several characters, each with a unique and touching perspective. I cherished this book and often give it as a gift to other readers.

I loved this Maine author! Our book club found many issues to discuss. Monica Wood has a deep understanding of Maine communities. This collection of stories weaves a fantastic tale about a mill community torn apart by a strike and the healing process that ensues. Her characters are appealing and her sense of humor is awesome.

I am a Jewish believer in Messiah from Long Island NY. I have been priviledged to witness the tremendous success that comes from the faithful following of the principles of Jim and Susan Wood's book. I have seen this, up to now, unbelivable success at the ranch in Tennessee as well as with my own children ages twenty-one and six at home in New York. Every Child Deserves Straight A's deserves an A plus itself for sharing with it's readers the basic keys to a child's education in easy to understand, clear and loving language (and please note that according to the Wood's, education takes place all day and every day). This book brings to life the all important point that in order to be good parents and role models to our children, we as parents must first submit our will to God and follow biblical principles ourselves. It is the total dedication by Jim and Susan Wood to these biblical principles and to serving God by investing their lives in the lives of children, that I am privileged to witness through their writing and when visiting Wears Valley Ranch in Tennessee.

I know Jim and Susan Wood personally and have seen the effects of the principles described in this book on the lives of the children they work with. The stories are true and it has affected my life profoundly to see how God's love can change a person's life so dramatically. This book can change the lives of the children in your life too.

When the Dr. told me she thought I had Endo, I went out and got a book to explain what endo was. This book is really wonderful, it is very easy to read and taught me a lot about what endo was and what the different ways to treat it are. I found this book to be really informative.

The painful mystery of endometriosis

Endometriosis is the type of gynaecological disease that many women will only hear of when they are diagnosed with it. Some women will experience relatively few symptoms, others will be extremely unwell much of the time. For some women, though, the disease can impact on fertility.

Ros Wood and Lorraine Henderson have written a great book (this is the second edition) which provides a wealth of information to both sufferers of the disease and their families and friends as well as to health carers.

Back in 1980, when I had my first definitive diagnosis of this disease, there was very little 'plain English' information available to sufferers. This book is amongst the best I have read on this topic.

Highly recommended to all who either suffer from endometriosis or know someone who does. It would also make a useful inclusion on the bookshelves of groups concerned with women's health.

While not a complete book for a serious mushroom collector this book introduces the reader to the wonderful world of fungi. The artwork in awesome, and the amount of information on the selected species of mushrooms is great considering the size of the book. It would be a great companion for a walk in the north woods in late summer!!!

If you like earthy grimy narrative poetry

Review Date: 2000-07-13
David Lee has created for himself a solid niche in the literary scene: who else writes narrative poetry set in grimy, failure, male domination .... and makes of it a wise observation of the universal human story? David Lee succeeds in this again and again.

In the case of The Fish, hubbie cuts out on chores to go fishing and get drunk, only to find his wife won't clean the fish, make coffee ... until it becomes a contest of determination ... at the end you'll even feel a bit fond of him even if admitting he's wrong is beyond his capability - sort of.

David Lee may not appeal to everyone but his sense of oral language and of narrative give him a large audience.

I heard Mr. Lee read this narrative poem in April at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. It was absolutely beyond awesome. I highly recommend it to anyone who has ever fought with a spouse or significant other.

This book is excellent for a beginner, speaking as a beginner. I have carved Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus without any complications. Illustrations are perfect along with well written instructions. If you desire to carve a nativity set but shy away due to the appeared difficulty, this is book will remove any hesitations. Flat plane carving does not have quite a much detail, but is similar to the Willow Tree style of carving. This will definitly allow you to produce a quality nativity set that can become a family heirloom.

A practical guide to understanding problem behavior
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 1998-02-26
Many people, including new and prospective foster and adoptive parents, presume that "replacing" a "bad" family with a "good" one will normalize children who've been neglected or abused. It's suprising when these kids, who "should" be bending over backwards to please their new parents, repeatedly lie, despite being caught red-handed; pick fights when things appear to be going smoothly; and set up their "replacement" moms and dads to play the role of bully.

Fostering Changes provides a framework for understanding why so many foster kids engage in anti-social, self-defeating behavior despite months, and even years, in healthy, loving foster homes. It also describes the dynamics which can result in disrupted placements, even in families where seasoned and highly capable foster parents feel well-equipped to handle children with "special needs."

This book, written as a practical guide for both professional and lay persons, is easy to read, with a minimum of jargon, numerous case examples, and charts summarizing key points. It's clear that Dr. Delaney, a psychologist, has a great deal of experience with emotionally disturbed children and a wealth of compassion for the pain of foster parents seeking to be healers. As a foster parent, I "saw" myself in these pages and "heard" Dr. Delaney telling me, "No, it's not just you," "There is hope," and, "You're not alone."

My only major criticism is that Delaney uses most of the book to explain "the problem" and says relatively little about what to do about it. His follow-up book, Troubled Transplants, is a helpful sequel which emphasizes therapeutic intervention.

A Theosophical Look at Four Religions

Review Date: 2006-07-26
Four Great Religions contains lectures delivered in 1906 by social reformer Annie Besant. A Theosophist, she seeks to find the universal truth in Hinduism, Zoroastrianism, Buddhism and Christianity.

Written for ordinary readers, each lecture emphasizes the value and beauty of each faith while underscoring their unity. Even a century after they were first delivered, the lectures are passionate, insightful and enlightening.
