Kurt provides all the details to make identification possible: clear photos, description of habitat, and the time when a species is active. In addition, the chapters at the front of the book spark your interest in this fierce predator: What is a Dragonfly, Dragonfly Biology 101, Behavior of the "Winged Dragons" and Dragonfly Observation.

This fine book is well-written, sharply-designed, and full of interesting facts about dragonfly life, as well as what you need to identify the species in the area covered. The author's obviously extensive experience shines through in the text.

No wonder "The Code" was created, EC was censored, and went out of business

Shock SuspenStories, The EC Archives, Volume 2 contains full color glossy reprints of issues 7-12 of Shock SuspenStories. Now that Gemstone is publishing these stories, one can see why "The Code" was created, EC was censored, and went out of business. The only thing missing from these reprints are the advertisements. I wanna send away from my X-Ray specs!

Issue 7's last story, "The Small Assassin," is an adaptation of a Ray Bradbury story. Issue 9's first story, "The October Game" is also an adaptation of a Ray Bradbury tale.

The story "In Gratitude..." deals with racism and the small town mindset. It is stories like these that offer a glimpse into how life was back years ago. Taking into account the final message of this story, the moral lesson, one can see how it conflicted with an agenda of racism. I will not give you the particulars and details because the story presents the realities of war, two heroes' homecomings, and how different they were. For children and teenagers to read comic books with such social commentary rebuking the establishment, EC branded themselves.

Great stories and a great glimpse into the history of comics!

My Viper is the most amazing axe I've ever experienced. When I first heard Voodoo Violince so long ago, I never dreamed that someday I would hold the ULTIMATE INSTRUMENT in my hands. Let alone that I would get to share the stage with Mark Wood himself. And to top it all off, now I get to study every jaw-dropping technique and blistering lick whenever I want with the Electrify Your Strings book. I'm a pro violinist and have been improvising for well over ten years now, but Mark's method is taking me to a whole new level. I cannot get enough! With all due respect to my classical training, I wish I could put a copy into the hands of every kid who's slaving over his music stand regurgitating the same tired old scales and etudes and begging for sweet, sweet death. God bless Mark Wood and everyone in the Wood Violins Family! Rock On!!!

This was emailed directly to Mark Wood from a new Viper owner named Amy, who purchased "Electrify Your Strings" to help her get started!

"Got my Viper strapped on and was working on Exercise 3 (arpeggios) of Mark's method book and I had to write and tell you how much I LOVE it. I read all the text first, then came upstairs to my private room to practice the notes. This is exactly what I've been needing! I have a bunch of method books by various people trying to teach improvisation (or jazz and blues styles) but I lost interest immediately after trying them the first times. So I basically gave up entirely and went back to notes (it's been a year now). Which I hate, because being a read-notes-only type totally cripples me in the rock and blues world. This book of his speaks to me in a way I understand, somehow. I can't really explain it. I've already learned enough in the first three exercises to try out some new things tomorrow night at band rehearsal. It hasn't even been an hour! With his explanation of the octave hand position with root notes and pentatonics, this alone gives me tons of ammunition with which to fire a little something away on my own in any song we rehearse. None of the other books explained that to me. So in short, after just a couple of Mark's pages, I'M FINALLY GETTING THIS!!! Something has clicked in my mind (and therefore my hands!). A totally awesome, inspiring beginning for me.

Please tell Mark how pleased I am. I wish you could see how excited I am, here with my beloved Viper strapped on, tapping away hurriedly on the keyboard so I can get back to practicing with this book.

My Viper goes with me to work every day and I show all of my clients. Everybody's jaws just drop open when they see it. "THAT'S a violin?!" they all gasp. It's so cool. I feel like a rock star!

Peace & Love and all nice things to you!

Amy"

My favorite source of information about perennials!

Anyone who loves perennial plants should own at least one perennial plant encyclopedia. I highly recommend this 'Encyclopedia of Perennials' by Christopher Woods. This book does not concentrate on pictures, although there are enough photographs to give you an idea of what at least one plant species in each genus looks like.

The listing for each plant genus includes information about cultivation, landscape use, and propagation. After each genus listing, the book offers a wealth of information about the many plant species within each genus of plants. Information for each species includes the common name, the plant's origin, height and spread, description, and zone hardiness. Many cultivars (cultivated varieties of a species of plant) are also listed and described.

As an example, after the general information about Penstemon, seven species are listed and described. One of the species entries reads:
"P. digitalis. Eastern United States. Height 3 ft; spread 2 ft (90 x 60 cm). An erect, clump-forming plant native to open meadows, with elliptic to broadly lance-shaped basal leaves becoming narrower and smaller up on the flower stem. Spikes of bell-shaped, white flowers sometimes flushed pink are produced in early summer. This is a variable species. 'Husker Red' has purple-red leaves, red stems, and white-flushed purple flowers and is a highly desirable cultivar. In general, this species and its cultivar are far easier to grow in hot and humid climates than their western relatives. Zones 3 - 9."

I enjoy the author's style. Christopher Woods provides no-nonsense descriptions, such as his warning about the Houttuynia: "An effective but sometimes ugly groundcover for wet sites, where it can become almost impossible to eradicate. Be warned!"

I have found 'Encyclopedia of Perennials' to be an excellent source of information. More than once, it has prevented me from purchasing a plant with which I would not be happy, and it has also encouraged me to seek out plants that otherwise, I would have passed by!

This book has information on seemingly every perennial

Each time I need information about a perennial, I find this book has a listing for that plant. I can't say that about any other perennial reference book that I have used.

SOA - reality today!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-02
Being a student of business and information management, I had heard about SOA before, both from a technical perspective (XML, Web services) and from a business standpoint (shiny visions of flexible processes). This book is like the missing link between the two areas! It does not only tell you that SOA will change organizations but it also shows *how* exactly this is going to happen. The authors describe all relevenat aspects, starting from organizational change down to the SAP tools that can be used to model processes and to create your own service-oriented applications.
What surprised me most was that ESA - SAP's flavour of SOA - is business-ready today! This is illustrated with numerous real-world examples from a wide range of corporations. The case studies give a good idea of useful ESA applications and show how the transition to a service-oriented infrastructure could take place.
"Enterprise SOA" is suited for everybody interested in information management, even without any previous knowledge in the SOA field. After reading through the book, you'll finally know how SOA is changing the business environment and how SAP is bringing the concepts to life based on open standards. Although you won't know every technical detail, you'll have learned enough to plan your organization's future in a service-oriented world.

Very Helpful Book on SOA

This is a very helpful book on SOA because it provides the business case for SOA, an excellent technical overview, and real-life examples of how to use it.

While it is written from an SAP perspective, any IT group that is investigating SOA will find value in this book -- as it describes how SOA impacts different layers of the IT stack (from persistence to business objects, to process orchestration, and uesr interfaces). It also provides actual case studies.

I loved this Maine author! Our book club found many issues to discuss. Monica Wood has a deep understanding of Maine communities. This collection of stories weaves a fantastic tale about a mill community torn apart by a strike and the healing process that ensues. Her characters are appealing and her sense of humor is awesome.

I am a Jewish believer in Messiah from Long Island NY. I have been priviledged to witness the tremendous success that comes from the faithful following of the principles of Jim and Susan Wood's book. I have seen this, up to now, unbelivable success at the ranch in Tennessee as well as with my own children ages twenty-one and six at home in New York. Every Child Deserves Straight A's deserves an A plus itself for sharing with it's readers the basic keys to a child's education in easy to understand, clear and loving language (and please note that according to the Wood's, education takes place all day and every day). This book brings to life the all important point that in order to be good parents and role models to our children, we as parents must first submit our will to God and follow biblical principles ourselves. It is the total dedication by Jim and Susan Wood to these biblical principles and to serving God by investing their lives in the lives of children, that I am privileged to witness through their writing and when visiting Wears Valley Ranch in Tennessee.

The stories are true and it has affected my life profoundly to see how God's love can change a person's life so dramatically. This book can change the lives of the children in your life too.

When the Dr. told me she thought I had Endo, I went out and got a book to explain what endo was. This book is really wonderful, it is very easy to read and taught me a lot about what endo was and what the different ways to treat it are. I found this book to be really informative.

The painful mystery of endometriosis
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-23
Endometriosis is the type of gynaecological disease that many women will only hear of when they are diagnosed with it. Some women will experience relatively few symptoms, others will be extremely unwell much of the time. For some women, though, the disease can impact on fertility.

Ros Wood and Lorraine Henderson have written a great book (this is the second edition) which provides a wealth of information to both sufferers of the disease and their families and friends as well as to health carers.

Back in 1980, when I had my first definitive diagnosis of this disease, there was very little 'plain English' information available to sufferers. This book is amongst the best I have read on this topic.

Highly recommended to all who either suffer from endometriosis or know someone who does. It would also make a useful inclusion on the bookshelves of groups concerned with women's health.
