I have bought the other books in this series with Emerson, Whitman and Muir and this one by far is the best! I am not sure if I connected so much with Thoreau's writing style or if his thoughts just were more impactful to the soul but I loved this book. Each meditation is to be read and really pondered over to get its fully impact, this isn't just a book to read to kill time but to really reflect on the deaper issues under the surface of this thing we call life. Buy it and enjoy it!

Enjoy!

This a wonderful book. It certainly can be read very quickly, but why would you want to? Take your time and enjoy the words on the pages. See and feel the beauty in all things the way Thoreau did. After reading a selection from the book, I always came away with good feelings, very serene. I will likely read it again and again. I've just recently moved to Oregon where it is lush and beatiful. My change of scenery may have given me a somewhat, Thoreau, perspective, but then, that's the idea, isn't it? Judge for yourself.

This simple yet lovely small book is easy to pick up and read, whether before beginning the day or retiring at night. Everyone who delights in the outdoors and enjoys reading nature writers needs a copy of this book. And the price is right! Be immersed again in the wise words of Thoreau and other thoughtful spiritual teachers.

Excellent cookbook, with many "old standbye" claasics, but updated with a contemporary twist. Especailly delicious are Shrimp Enchiladas and Creme Brulee. I have tried MANY of the recipes, and not one has ever been less than what I hoped for.

Great for cooks of all abilities.

This cookbook was sent to me by a friend who knows the author. I've never had a bad result and each recipe is elegant and delicious. My very favorite dish is the rack of lamb. The pear tart is wonderful as well. This is also a nice "gift" book.

Memorable Meals has become my standby companion when entertaining for family and friends. Moorman's recipes reflect her european training infused with the unique flavors of the Southwest. The menu suggestions are both delicious and charming -- from the Christening Brunch of Tiny Cheese Tarts and Pear Tart to the Day of the Dead (Dia de las Muertes) menu featuring Poblanos Santa Fe and Strawberry Ice Peppers. Also helpful are the suggested wine parings and presentation suggestions.

What a wonderful book! My family loves being outdoors and watching wildlife; and this book tells a lovely story about a little duckling on the river and all the other animals he is seeing his first time out on the river. The photography is gorgeous and educational. It's better than an artist's rendering because you're seeing the real thing. My kids, my husband and I love the story and the pictures. This book has become the most frequently asked for story in our household. I highly recommend this book for young and old alike.

Correcting Deficiencies

The details are somewhat burdensome, HOWEVER they are a part of the book's strength. The 'scientific' approach lays a strong foundation for the conclusions reached vs. conclusions based on feelings and/or prejudices.
I sense that the writers were carefully chosen, so I trust that process and basically trust the writers. Thus the conclusion sections were valuable to me.
It is helpful to have the writers suggest how CWM composers could correct present deficiencies in current CWM.
John Witvliet's concluding chapter is meaty.

This well edited publication put into words what I had often felt: something was missing or awry in our contemporary church music. The best part is that each author offered constructive criticism and suggestions. This should be in the hands of worship leaders and pastors across the country in all types of churches. What a gift to the Christian community!

The Message in the Music: Studying Contemporary Praise and Worship
Brian Walrath and Robert Woods have brought together a series of essays on contemporary worship music. The ten essays are authored by knowledge-
able people from a variety of disciplines. The author of each section of the book gives a broad and honest appraisal of the history and the impact of contemporary Christian music.

The book gives the reader the feeling of attending a seminar on the subject of Christian music where the presenters deal with various aspects - both positive and negative - of contemporary Christian music and the influence of this music on the church.

The Message in the Music will be a great help to music students and to those who teach in the field of Christian music. Pastors, worship leaders, theologians, and writers and producers of Christian music will find this book a valuable resource. The book would also be very effective for small group discussion.

I found the book a very good read and most inspirational and informative.

Influential Mike Kelley Monograph

This was one of the first and best monographs of this most important of West Coast artists who is now enjoying a slight rennaissance. For years this was the only book available on Mike Kelley, other than thin catalogues of european shows. Luckily, with the advent of more writing on Kelley, we have come to find that indeed it was and is the best introduction to his work. We are introduced to Kelley's work via tons of lovely color photos, b & w personal photos of kelleys, lengthy interviews, and essays. Nothing is to hard to understand and the psychological subtexts of his work easily filters into the writing without confusion. His earliest collegiate work recieves just as good attention as his later sonic youth-era works, although I would have appreciated more discussion of his side project the influential noise band Destroy All Monsters. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in the west coast art scene, and should probably be recquired reading for anyone taking a class on the subject.

If you do not know Mike Kelley, with this book you will.

I have nothing but praise for Phaidon's publications. Each of their artist's books contain great documentations of the artwork, plus detailed writings by the artist and critics. If you are going to read a description of an artist's work, who better to explain it to you than the artist. This is especially true with Mike Kelley. He is well known for the writings he does for each of his works and he pulls no punches in his delivery.

Mike Kelley's excellent catalog from Phaidon may be the most definitive work to date concerning the merging of Elite and Popular culture. Kelley's use of his own astute observations about the world in which we live to "debunk belief systems" and deflate popular pretentions is nothing short of revelatory. His pathetic stance in sculpture, drawing, performance, sound, and banner-making constitute total war on austerity. All modes of his work are well-documented here with color photography of installations and descriptions and criticism by some of the best in their fields.

Fruit soup. Yes, I said fruit soup. Author and former chef David Woods has put together a cookbook devoted totally to the art of making delicious soups from fruit. And one must agree with the statement he states in his introduction, these are one of the stranger culinary treats. Mr. Woods also points out that fruit soups are popular in Northern and Central Europe and are just starting to catch on in the United States. Based on what I see, let's hope so.

After looking at some of the recipes I must admit are a few that pique my interest. For instance, The Fire and Ice Melon Soup. Watermelon, cantaloupe, zucchini, honey are all ingredients that one wouldn't first think of when making a soup. But this chilled soup blends these flavors to create a refreshingly good, versatile, and quick dish which can be served as an appetizer, light lunch, or even a dessert.

The book starts with a rundown on the ingredients used in the recipes. There are some exotic fruits used in some of the recipes so this is a nice touch. In addition to two stock recipes to be used as bases for some of the recipes, he also provides several ideas for easy to make croutons for use as a garnish.

Mr. Woods serves up over 90 recipe for fruit soups in his paperback book. Many are chilled soups that appear to be fast to assemble, perfect for summer when everyone is on the go. Who says soup is a cold weather dish? Not David Woods, and he proves it in this excellent, well laid out book.

A superb, one-of-a-kind cookbook for any dining occasion.

This is an outstanding 1940's-50's era cookbook with recipes for exceptionally tasty meals (from appetizers to desserts) that are pretty simple to prepare with easy to obtain ingredients. The recipes and accompanying text are also fun to read as they provide an interesting background on each dish. The author (Morrison Wood) wrote a widely read column in the old Chicago Daily News, and one of the most delightful features of the book is the insight he provides on the social and restaurant scene of that time period in Chicago and nationally. Long shuttered restaurants as well as the prominent personalities of the day are discussed by an author who is both witty and obviously knowledgeable.

Paisner is consistently good. Whether he is writing one of his numerous celebrity biographies or a novel, his style and story keep you interested from page one. The characters in Mourning Wood are so innovative and interesting; they are a breath of fresh air from your standard pop culture fare. I believe this is the second novel of Paisner's and I can only hope that he turns more of his attention to fiction as both of these have been treats.

Funny, perceptive and highly entertaining!!

This is a great book. A real surprise. What a treat.
On the one hand, this is a tale of reinvention. It's a story about having (or having had) everything you wanted - and then still wanting to call a do-over.
On the other hand, it is hysterical. Sometimes it's hysterical in a laugh-out-loud sort of a way. Sometimes in a sneak-up-on-you-the-next-day-in-the-shower sort of a way. It is a biting, insightful look at pop culture through the lens of a one-time A-list Hollywood leading man who sees the opportunity to make himself relevant again - to himself and to the world, by dying. Sort of.

From the writer's bio it seems that he has written a number of books with celebrities. And that inside feel really comes across when you read this book. You have the feeling of getting into the mind and culture of someone who has lived his life under the watchful eye of the media and his adoring public. There's a kind of Being John Malkovich thing going here - as the writer brings you into the head of a Jack Nicholson kind of guy, and he's got the street cred and the chops to really pull it off. On the other side of the story is this kind of hapless, deadbeat newspaper obit writer - and the vivid accounts of his life and perspective, to often bitingly hilarious result.
I highly recommend this book.

I've looked for this book for ten years, and can't believe I finally located it! I loved the story when I read it (circa 1975) but then lost track of the title. I knew it was about a bat and a flying squirrel, and it was called 'something...In the Night Woods.' A great mystery book for kids. Can't wait to read it again.

This is a how-to book about running a d20 campaign in the `Biblical Era'

It includes alternative base classes, prestige classes, spells, monsters and a wealth of information about culture, history and religion of the major powers in the region. Does give a bit more space to the Israelites, but Egyptian, Babylonian and Cannite societies are all discussed in detail. A new tactical battle system is also introduced to run Biblical style wars. (aka. where the actions of a single hero or miracle will determine the course of the battle.)

Players need to be a little more mature than most d20 games to enjoy TESTAMENT. Not because the content is questionable. (although the discussion of Temple Prostitutes may cause snickering in some groups) There is a heavy emphasis on role playing in TESTAMENT. Protecting your tribe, surviving history and maintaining piety are very important concerns in the setting. If your players are looking for a `kill monsters and take their stuff' kind of game, than a lot of info in this book is going to go to waste.

Looking for an alternative to the LOTR/Conan/Magic Medieval setting? Try TESTAMENT. It's Better than you think.

This is an example for any 'historical' or 'literary' RPG supplement. It gives a good overview of the historical and literary inspirations, makes complete and coherent rules for role playing in that setting, addresses fairly the limits and opportunities in taking a setting familiar through history or fiction and making the shift to a role playing setting. Not only did they think up cool and useful feats, spells, etc. they are integrated deeply into the setting & vice versa. There are good gaming products out there, but few that can serve as an example of how to make a good gaming product as well. Some may say it isn't perfect, but until we find something that is, this will serve as something to measure other products against.

Excellent roleplaying guide for any Old Testament story. Covers play as any of the ancient peoples of the Bible and during any period, although there is an emphasis on Israelites and King David. Detailed events system makes village and farming life interesting. Bronze age army combat resolution captures the feel of the ancient ballads. Heroes dominate the ancient battlefield like champions from the Trojan War. Very, very well done and worthwhile for anyone interested in roleplaying the Ancient World.
