Dr. Wood places his own spin on everyday living through stories that everyone can relate to. Some of these stories will make you laugh and some will make you cry but they will all touch you on some emotional and spiritual level. Dr Wood's gift for subtle illustration through storytelling will cause you to look at everyday situations from a different angle. Living the Good Life is a 21st century guidebook for christian living based on very old original values and morals. Whether you read this book in one sitting or chapter by chapter, read this book. You won't be disappointed.

This is a good nightstand book that you can pick up for a few minutes every evening and still find something warm and interesting to absorb. Each chapter is different and covers another aspect of life. It kept my attention and I can't wait for Dr. Wood to have a sequel. Not only have I learned a great deal; I have also passed my copy among my family members -- this is a very good book. I highly reccommend it. It's funny, touching, and down to earth.

I was pleasantly surprised at the content of this book. Each chapter is a stand-alone; and it seems like Dr. Wood has a unique perspective on life and way of expressing his thoughts, and teaching valuable life lessons, that remind me of the writings of great authors such as Max Lucado or Dr. James Dobson. Maybe he's a healthy mixture of both. I found the book to be intelligent, without being preachy or legalistic. It also includes sound psychological foundations in which to rely on, in a variety of real-life issues. It has helped me tremendously on day-to-day living. Bravo, Dr. Wood. Your book is a winner!

Here is a "no holds barred" approach to describing "real life" shortcomings in handling public finances, and then providing tips to local government policy makers and managers on how to avoid a similiar circumstance.

Len Wood writes from first hand knowledge and experience. He describes the situation; outlines the facts; details the results; and provides the reader with suggestions to lessen financial risk and/or failure in the expenditure of public funds.

While the author's primary target is the newly elected official, the importance of this work to experienced elected and appointed public officals cannot be overstated. No one who has worked in the public sector can peruse this book without saying, "There, but for the grace of God, go I!"

An excellent budget, financial and treasury primer.

As an elected Treasurer and local government finance director for the past several years, I found this book to be an excellent primer for all elected and appointed officials. The practical advice offered by Mr. Wood is based on his experience and input from his peers and is extremely valuable. The book is written in a very informal and concise way and should be required reading for all elected officials. In fact, I gave this book to each City Council member and they have all indicated that this book provided excellent financial advice.

Great book for people interested in local government.

What a delightful book. The author has presented his subject in an understandable and capitivating manner. He does this by using lots of real life vignettes to make his points. People who want to know what their local officials should and should not be doing will want to read this book.

Superb book on several fronts...

Earley was trying to write a history of turpentining. What he ended up with was a spectacular essay on the natural history of longleaf pine forests, the human history of the forested south, an essay on conflicting views in forestry, and....oh yes...turpentine!

Reading this as an ecologist, I found everything I wanted with just enough of the human element to flesh it out without boring me. Oddly enough, I suspect those reading this from an anthropological view have the same opinion about the natural history aspect of the book. Earley is that good in weaving his tale.

It flows well, is well organized, and the research and references are stunning. Twenty-three pages of references make me wonder how he ever finished the book. (In his acknowledgements he seems to wonder the same thing himself!)

This book belongs on the shelf of every forester, ecologist, and southern historian. I'm just thankful I stumbled across it on a rainy day in Congaree National Park.

mr. earley goes deep into everything you could want to know about this native tree species,a cornerstone to both the natural world of the southeastern united states and the economic growth and development of the country as a whole.......he tells all about the past history, present day status, and projected outlook of the longleaf pine tree:it's one-time dominance of the coastal plain landscape, compared to it's present day status;all about the naval stores and timber industries, and their heavy dependence upon it that led to it's near demise and current numbers;and the changes in land management of the longleaf forest and it's various ecosystems, with much insight to the controlled burning philosophy that has gained in popularity during the last 50 years or so.....with photos, including some impressive shots of long-gone virgin growth trees dwarfing the grown men standing among them.

America's Rain Forest

Review Date: 2004-11-22

For years I have been concerned about the disappearance of the South American Rain Forest. What was shocking from Earley's book is how we had our own expansive Forest with it's own ecosystem and let it disappear before our very eyes without anyone noticing.

It is not only a wonderfully told story of the Longleaf pine but it is a genuine history of how the South's economic development between the time of the settlers and up until today nearly destroyed it's most valuable resource and the ecology that was a part of it.

The only problem with this book was not being able to put it down after I started reading it.

Best book on longleaf yet.

The Best Bedtime Book Ever Written

THE MIDNIGHT FARM, which is inexplicably now out of print, is the best bedtime book ever written. With a sleepy, repetitive, poetic cadence, Reeve Lindberg not only gives a lesson about not being afraid of the dark, but also subtly includes 1-10 counting and 10 different kinds of animals. Susan Jeffers' illustrations are beautiful, encouraging the child (and the parent) to appreciate the warmth and beauty of the animals, safe and warm in the dark. I love GOOD NIGHT, MOON, but THE MIDNIGHT FARM is even better and richer, and I can't imagine why it's out of print.

This book was a favorite of my son many years ago (he's now 12) and is now a favorite of my daughter (2). Both love/d the idea of the mother taking her child out of bed to visit everything in the dark -- the dog sleeping in the chair, the geese milling outside the barn, the horses dozing in their stalls, the mice sleeping in the old stone wall, etc. Miss Lindbergh's prose is comforting and lulling: "Here is the dark of the midnight farm, safe and still and full and warm, deep in the dark and free from harm, in the dark of the midnight farm..." A great book.

Great book for quelling fears of the dark night

Really the title should have been "here is the dark" as this is the repetitive line on every page that is such a great line!

The book starts off in the bedroom of a little boy whose mother is telling him of what is happening in the darkness. She talks of the darkness in the room. Then they move out into the hall and outside, each step along the way she is pointing out what is in the darkness (the same things as were there when it was light). When they go outdoors they see both wild animals and farm animals and they see what they are doing in the dark. In the beginning the rhyme points to one item, then goes up to ten as the pages are turned. The last page summarizes that all the animals are "safe and still and warm, deep in the dark and free from harm, in the dark of the midnight farm".

The text does not say so but it is apparent that the little boy was afraid of the dark and that this is the mothers' creative way to show him what is happening in the dark and that "life goes on" in the dark and that everyone and everything is safe in the dark. The last image is of the boy sleeping in his bedroom alone while mother looks over him.

The illustrations are beautiful. My children and I loved the rhyme and the repetitive nature, along with the counting up from one to ten.

Despite the publisher's age range, I feel this is fine for two year old's.

Beautiful story, beautifully told

This lovely story is so soft and lyrical, it is a joy to read and a pleasure to listen to. As night falls, a mother and child visit all of the animals on the farm, settling down for the night.

Expert scripture application!

Sometimes it's hard to know how to apply scriptures to our lives. But this is a book that does it so well. Not only do you receive the treasure of Debra Woods' many scriptural insights but you also learn how to apply new passages yourself just by seeing how it's done. I especially enjoyed the author's insights about prioritizing. She made me realize that I don't have to worry so much about making it through my to do list. Instead, by following King Benjamin's advice to do things in wisdom and order, I could instead just focus on meeting my childrens' emotional, spiritual, and physical needs for nurturing and the rest would take care of itself. It's easy to get things exactly backwards--crowding out the essential for the urgent.

Debra Woods truly has a gift of bringing clarity and insight to everyday problems through her writing and experiences. I highly recommend this book for anyone in any stage of mothering, even grandmothers.

I originally purchased Mothering with Spiritual Power because I wanted to support the author. I didn't think I would really identify with the book since I'm not a mom; however, I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was something that I could identify with in every single chapter. The book was both entertaining and uplifting/motivating. It's full of principles that we can apply in our lives to make our families better starting with ourselves. I especially enjoyed how real life examples were woven with Book of Mormon scripture. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to moms (I think it would make a great gift), but I would also recommend it to any woman.

One can understand why "Mothering with Spiritual Power" became the editor's pick for LDS Living Magazine. It gives hope and power to mothers in a world where too little recognition is given to this sacred calling. It is a perfect gift book for mothers at any stage of their parenting journey, as it shows how to glean strength and wisdom from the Book of Mormon in our mothering stewardship.

Debra Woods has poured her heart and soul into "Mothering's" pages, without ever slipping off the rock of the gospel Jesus Christ. The examples are true, the writing is smooth, and mothers everywhere will nod their heads in recognition to the scenarios described, as well as feel enlightened and uplifted by its spiritual core. Speaking as one mother to another, she gets to the essence of so many issues facing mothers today.

I want to emphasize that "Mothering with Spiritual Power" is a ray of HOPE (written in a can-do spirit), not an impossibly elevated standard for self-critical mothers to feel out-shone by. It truly is an asset and will help deepen one's study and appreciation of the Book of Mormon. Purchase it today, and you won't regret it!

Music Theory and Arranging Techniques for Folk Harps by Sylvia Woods.

If you ever had to take a class in music theory in school maybe you are more fortunate than I in that and you can remember and apply some of what you learned. For the rest of you I highly recommend buying this book of Sylvia's titled; Music Theory and Arranging Techniques for Folk Harps. Written before the "..... for Dummies" series became so popular, this book takes you easily and with lots of examples and illustrations from major chords to transposing... and everywhere in between! In the introduction Sylvia urges the reader to " Have fun with this book. Just go at your own pace, and take it step by step." Presenting concepts and theory step-by-step is another thing Sylvia does best!!!

Even though I never actually visited the Adirondack State Park, after reading Larry Beahan's new book, "My Grampa's Woods: The Adirondacks," I feel that I enjoyed a wonderful trip to the woods of long ago. Larry Describes life in a lumber camp in the Adirondack woods of 1900 in an honest an intimate way, so that you hear the noise of the loggers talking at breakfast, taste the hot cakes covered with maple syrup, and smell the horses as they sweat and strain at pulling the logs across the snow-ccovered forest floor. Life was hard then, and Larry doesn't cover over the hard part. There was loneliness and poverty. A dollar was always hard to find. Sometimes someone had to sell their horse to get the fixens to visit relatives at Christmas. And this was in the dayswhen some people depended on the horse not only for transportation, but needed the horse to help them earn money. Mr. Beahan writes about all of these events. There are no kings or queens in Larry's stories of the 1900's, just a lot of average folks struggling to make a living. When I was a boy I saw a two-man crosscut saw, and I also saw a two-bitted axe. Larry's descriptions of real men using real saws and real axes to felll real trees brought these humble tools to life. These wern't just decorative antiques. Real people, often young people, used these tools every day, scratching a living in the woods. Last weekend I read Mr. Beahan's book straight through, non-stop, until I was done. Afterwards, I felt that my trip to the Adirondacks of 1900 had ended too soon. I wanted to hear more about the loggers, their wives and girlfriends, and their life in the woods. It was a fascinating world to me, and now it's gone.

The New Bible Dictionary first appeared in 1962. It is one of many great books that was written, to a large degree, in Tyndale House, Cambridge. It has been updated several times to include new discoveries and to improve the already terrific original dictionary. The scholars who wrote the articles are some of the best-known, most-respected evangelical scholars today.

Highly recommended.

The New Bible Dictionary is more like an encyclopaedia than simply a dictionary. The scholarship is first-rate and the book is an almost essential resource for those who are conducting more in-depth study of the Bible.

It contains a number of articles from a range of good Christian scholars on pretty much every person, place, book and other thing in the Bible. For example, when discussing a book of the Bible, the article would contain information about the author, the date of writing, some of the scholarly issues concerning that book and would give a broad overview of the purpose and theology of the book.

This book is an invaluable resource for both lay person and Ministers, and would be useful to anyone who is involved in writing Bible studies or talks on the Bible, or who is undertaking formal study of the Bible or who is simply serious about examining more closely what the Bible really says.

If you fit one of these categories, you should definitely buy this book.

I almost hate to share one of the best kept secrets regarding a piece of heaven here on Earth, that being the North Maine Woods. Luckily I have found this place! Many of my friends know that I have enjoyed this amazing spot so for Christmas this past year I received a first edition copy of Nine Mile Bridge. In it, Helen Hamlim writes such a wonderful narrative of her three years living in these woods.

As a reader it was so good to be able to visualize what she wrote about as I have experienced, albeit in a VERY small way, some of it too. Her writing is folksy, campy, but most importantly genuine. What a gutsy woman she must have been!

I know that my next trip into the "woods" will be even more profound having read this novel.

READ IT TOO-- and don't be afraid to visit the "woods". I know you'll feel the same way I do about them-- a piece of heaven here on Earth.

Living in the 'wilderness' early in this century was a daily adventure. Much different from 'backpacking' as we know it. Folks like Helen Hamlin set up camp and lived and worked miles from any sizable town, with only a small number of neighbors, if any. Life was difficult and hard, but never dangerous, if you prepared properly. Ms. Hamlin is a first time author and, as such, is not to be compared with modern, well practiced authors of our time. Still, her story is fascinating reading of a life and times that is part of the wonderful fabric of our country. Highly recommended for those with a bent for real-life perspectives of a different America.

This is a time capsule of life in the Northern Maine woods through the 1920's-30's and into the early 1940's. My grandparents (briefly mentioned in the book) were French Canadian lumber workers who lived and worked the woods in the operations based around Jackman, Maine. (The Jeans and the Veillieuxs, respectively, my grandfather and grandmothers family).

A great read for people curious about the lives of those who worked in the lumber camps of Northern Maine in the early 20th Century. I've heard countless stories my late grandmother told of those days, and this book adds immensely to that rich experience.

This is a part of American History that will never occur again, the way of life in such remote locations, the teamwork, effort and work ethic and fun ethic of these folks was astounding. A true Gem worth buying.

This is a mystery within a mystery as Leadbeater and Besant take you on a journey down to the atomic level of matter. I was stunned and amazed. Fascinating read.

I read this book years ago and was stunned and amazed with the patterns that evolved through the Periodic Table. Peter Tompkins wrote about this book in Secret Life of Nature yet never gave the reader a picture or image of the concept and how it evolved ones thinking. For those who research and explore through different eyes will find this book a stunning journey. It links to string theory are facinating as I watched on Nova the other day I felt like I was stepping back in time to the 1900's not into a new universe. Sue www.dowsingcoach.com
