The genre of this book is historical fiction it tells thing that happened in history. the theme of this story is about a family who dad had a friend who lets them pick out a chrismas tree, so a little boy named mike picked the perfect tree, when he went to school he told his friends all about it, but his dad said they had to wait because where were they going to put it if they took it home, so they waited a few days later and when they came back someone had stole it. the setting is at the woods, at home, and school. the problem is that someone else spotted the tree and they took it and mike was so upset he didnt talk for a few day .

This book is a little slow to start, but as you continue reading you just may find yourself wanting to know what happens to each of the family members. It was an eye opening story for me in learning about the Japanese internment camps and just how the Japanese people were treated even when many of them had nothing to do with the events in the world at that time. I would definitely recommend this book to middle school students as well as adults.

This was the greatest book i have read so far this year! It is in the time of World War 2 which would be a pretty hard time for a teenager. Joe Hanada has lots of friends and plays basketball and marbles all the time. His country is starting to go into war and him and all his jap friends get treated badly and rude and they get commented on all the time. Joe starts loosing a whole bunch of friends by then. He also starts hearing a lot of information on the news and on the radio. His whole neighborhood got turned against them and he did have a ton of friends and now he only has like 5 friends. Joe makes a lot more though as time goes on. FBI comes and takes Joe's father to Mexico and to a lot of other places in only a few months. They take Joe and the rest of the family, like his brother and his mom and grandma to a Concentration camp. When they go to concentration camp it really hurts them and everyone else. They don't get to do anything they are locked up behind bars or a barbed wire fence. This was a great book and if you want to find out more then you should buy this book and read it. If i loved it then you can love it too. I read this book three times and i still read it. So that'll tell ya it is the best book ever and it teaches us that we should be proud that we have family and people that love us, because they didn't have many people that liked them or have many family members that lived around them. So it would be hard to be a teenager during World War 2. So think about it buy this book!

I love historical fiction, though usually not pieces set in the 20th century. This book however was an exception. I learned much about a shameful episode in our country's history and am planning on further study because this book has really picqued my interest.

The members of the fictional Hanada family consist of a range of character types that the author has deftly crafted to introduce readers to a range of internment camp experiences. This book is emotionally satisfying. It is a perfect tool to teach young people about the internment camp debacle.

Have you ever imagined a book that covers the vast space between Architects, engineers and joiners? Well, this is the one. The details are very helpful and are always accompanied by photos of real time buildings. At the same time there is an indepth description of timber technology, regarding most types of timber in terms of Structure, Construction etc. With this book you need not search any futher...definitely worth the money spent.

It's simply great. Any book cannot include everything. But, the editor of this book did a decent job. For the comprehensive references on timber construction, this is the best book. For more contemporary examples, this may not be for you although it does include some. But, that's why there are magazines. It's a kind of encyclopedia. It's good. Recommended!

The manual is a very complete study of construction with wood. The book is worth every penny if you want to understand the assembly of a building with timber. The details of facades are extremely useful, is shame that almost all case studies are European (of course the book is from a German publisher; and they totally mastered the construction and techniques).

The introductory history section is much briefer than the others in this series, almost nonexistent, a real disappointment. Maybe there's just not as much to say about wood compared to steel, glass, concrete or masonry; maybe the technology is not as extensive.

The structural section makes no effort to tutor, so will only be understandable by engineers. But if you want, you'll easily be able to build a wooden railroad bridge using the information here, so sophisticated and exhaustive is the coverage. (It has nothing in particular to say about residential construction, by the way, although several houses appear in the examples, which represent about half the book.)

The wood science section is good but too short; there's no building science section at all. The presentation is like others in the series, but adds color to the examples, unlike them. Some complaints, but overall an excellent book.

Jonathan Day's book is excellent. Not only does it showcase some of the most talented artists of Hopi, but it brings light to the new traditional way of carving. Sounds like an oxymoron, however, the traditional styles are beautiful and a more accurate representation of the kachina. I have had the privilege of meeting a few of the artists in the book. The book does a nice job highlighting these wonderful people who are so rich in culture.

The author, Jonathan S. Day has written a great book filled with interesting knowledge and history of the young carvers. With beautifully laid out color photos of their work. The author is a second generation trader and is knowledgeable of Hopi art and tradition. I recently visited The Jonathan S. Day Collection shop in Flagstaff, Arizona. It is filled with Kachinas and other Hopi artifacts for show and purchase similar to the items in the book. I highly recommend this book.

Author, Jonathan Day has created a feast for the eyes as well as the mind. Day, a second generation Indian trader, shares his love and respect for the Hopi people while introducing the reader to the traditional Hopi katsina (kachina)through a new generation of carvers. Most people are familiar with the "action" dolls, however, traditional katsinas are usually hung on the wall and have an "antique" look to them. As this is my favorite form of katsina I was immediately drawn to this book. JD shares his experiences with the 19 featured carvers and provides a wonderful insight to what guides them in their carving...many of the stories will touch your heart. An essential book to anyone who collects or has dreamed of collecting Hopi katsina dolls.

On a recent trip to Arizona -Sedona and Flagstaff, I was lucky to stumble upon a Hopi Marketplace, meet Jonathan Day and a number of the carvers in his book. This book is a wonderful beginning to the understanding the culture of the Hopi and the direction in which the creation of Kachinas is moving--a return to an art form that is based upon the teachings of the Hopi--a truer sense of the meaning of the kachina as a spirit which teaches and guides. Written with sensitivity and humour, Jonathan Day's book imparts the direction and meaning of the kachina, the Hopi culture and the artists behind the work. His commitment to the trust given to him by many of the artists interviewed along with his knowledge of the Hopi culture is invaluable to those of us of wish to understand more with respect and honor. His advice and recommended reading is invaluable.

A very good book!

This book deals with the "new" style of katsina doll carving that is in fact a revival of what is termed "traditional" style, the style found before the advent of "action" katsinas of the 1950's. The author has termed this new/old style "New Traditional", and has devoted this book to the carvers themselves, as well as the dolls they make. These katsinas are identified by their more simplistic style, with emphasis on the faces and body paint and costume, much different than the very elaborately carved and detailed "Modern Contemporary" dolls. Many of the Hopi artists in this book have been carving katsinas for years, but have only recently begun to carve in the old style of their grandfathers. The book describes what the categories of katsinas are, gives a biography of the featured carvers, the locations where their awesome dolls may be purchased, and even has an introduction on how to behave yourself if you are ever privileged enough to visit the Hopi mesas in Arizona (sadly, many of the Hopi ceremonies have been closed to outsiders because of rude, obnoxious behavior of tourists who think that these important religious rites are just shows put on for entertainment). This is a good book for collectors of katsina dolls, and even if this style of katsina carving isn't quite your cup of tea, I recommend this book very highly!

This was great! It was a great follow up from The Man who loved Clowns. Delrita has been mourning for her parents, her uncle, and her home. Then Aunt Queenie's father tells Delrita that she's like a turtle on the fence post who needs help. Later, Delrita finally finds enough courage to talk to someone. Can you guess who it was? If you have read The Man who loved Clowns, you should read Turtle on a Fence Post. I recommend it to anyone.

For those of you that didn't know, Turtle on a Fence Post is the follow up to The Man Who Loved Clowns. The Man Who Loved Clowns has been my favorite book for years. When I came upon Turtle on a Fence Post, I thought there is no way this can be as good as the first one. I was so wrong. The book takes up where The Man Who Loved Clowns left off. Although both books are fictional, some of the characters are based on real people. It is so wonderfully written, I cried when I read it. It portrays the emotions one might feel after experiencing a great loss excellently. I thought it was a great book and I would encourage everyone to read it.

The blurb is right--I could not put WOLF'S CUB down. I found this medieval world completely believable, and I rapidly became attached to the characters, especially the hero, Herric. He is everything a fantasy hero should be, but deeply human, too. The climax is heart-pounding, moving, and real. This is the best kind of fantasy because, while it's an epic adventure, resonant with dangerous magic, subtle intrigue, and age-old prophecies, it reflects our world's joys and difficulties, and what it says feels true. I guess this is a small publishing house, and that's too bad, because WOLF'S CUB will get less attention that way, and it deserves a LOT. This is a fabulous read. Buy it. You'll be glad you did.

All teenage Prince Herric wants out of life is to be a scholar and to marry his beloved Gwyneth. As the third and youngest son of Athgar's Wolf King Alric, Herric's idyllic life seems to be a sure shot. However, his oldest brother is killed and the middle sibling is incarcerated for dabbling with forbidden powers. As the heir, Herric has become a political pawn and no longer controls his life.

Alric arranges a marriage between Herric and Princess Elaine. This arrangement leaves Herric with a powerful enemy in Gwyneth's family, but he does what he believes is the right thing for his kingdom. Even though he and his spouse Elaine(a latent but powerful magician just coming into her own) are forced into war , Herric seeks peace with the barbarians at the gates of his kingdom. Unbeknownst to the young prince is that his true enemy remains hidden, manipulating events like a Machiavelli form the side lines.

Readers of fantasy who enjoy their novel to occur in a realistic plane in which magic is another aspect of physics need to read the charming WOLF'S CUB. The story line is filled with magic and legendary fighting, but what makes this reviewer believe that this novel is the right way to go with fantasy is the depth into the political side of the prime characters and the bleak impact of war on even the mightiest of rulers, warriors and wizards. Mackay Wood proves a fresh face that makes Athgar feel both magical and mundane as if it is a land located on our planet.

Wolf's Cub rises several tiers above typical fantasy fare. The plot is driven by the diverse forces of historical precedent, cultural predjudice, politics and the personalities of the protagonists. Young Prince Herric's finds his desires thwarted and his destiny tangled in an war rooted in age old hatreds, a deep mire of distrust which grows ever more treacherous with each drop of spilled blood. Trying to extract himself and his kingdom from this fatal bog, Herric learns that swords on make grudges stronger, and making peace is harder than making war.

At first glance Wolf's Cub is a typical "Sword 'n Sorcery" tale, with kings, princes and princesses, knights and warlords, much sword play, and evil magicians. However, a deeper look into this tale of the forced growth of a teen-aged prince into a powerful and beloved warrior king, and the prices he pays to reach this, reveals a detail of character and humanity and level of complexity uncommon to most "S'nS" books. The characters of Prince Herric, his arranged marriage bride, Princess Elaine, and the courtiers, lords and ministers, ladies in waiting, and even down to the churls in a hut where Herric takes shelter from the rain after battle, are sharply drawn, human, and ultimately can be identified with by any reader. One does regret that the characters of the "bad guys" are not so equally balanced and human. This is a story and saga that will suck you in to a story at first fanciful and escapist, but eventually as frustrating and real as life. The reader shares every blow in battle, every fatigue and disappointment in politics, every frustration with a willful and egocentric father, and every day's despair of the war-racked populace. Consequently, you are engrossed in the events of Herric's struggle. But there's another reason besides good writing and a great read, to buy this book. The reader will realize by book's end that he's also just read an allegory about many of the ills we live with today--acid rain, drought and flood, natural disasters, strange, unpredictable weather, and inexplicable enemies, for the world of high Athgar suffers from many of the same. Through the story a theme can be discerned, the theme of the Pattern of the World and its growing imbalance. Then the story becomes one of attempted reconciliation of two long-alienated parts of humanity, the human, practical, logical side, and the magickal, intuitive, psychic side. Then it becomes the story of the new millennium, and the attempts to put those two parts together again. In Wolf's Cub there are two magickal kingdoms: black magic Zalkyrth, and white magic Melgorna. But magic is found in Athgar, too, despite the cultural prejudice against it. So we have the A of Athgar set against the Z of Zalkyrth, with the M of Melgorna balanced between them in allegorical style, and the author's solution is not that one defeat the other, but that like long-separated siblings, they come together to create a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.

It's a big and invigorating book. If you like earth art this book (and there are others) offers some of the best of Goldsworthy. The concepts and execution are as inventive as they are cerebral. While I've never seen his work in person the photos and narrative of this book really feel like they capture the detail. In other ways the book itself is as well presented and printed as any book of art I've seen. If you can't afford it (it was expensive for me) try and get your local library to invest. It would be a great contribution to your local enclave.

Andy Goldsworthy creates forms that echo the patterns of nature so completely the viewer is almost convinced that mother nature herself made them, rather than human hands. Goldsworthy's sculptures are more than works of art. They become integral yet fleeting parts of the lanscape that surrounds them. His shapes are fluid and delicate, and his ideas are deceptively simple, yet appear to defy both time and gravity. His experiments in Wood are gentle and thought-provoking, and prove that beauty exists all around us. Looking at his book makes me appreciate the trees, rocks, and water all around us. Andy Goldsworthy honors the earth with his quiet, sculptural meditations.

A fresh look at nature

Goldsworthy's art isn't what he makes. It's what he does to things that are already there to make them fresh and beautiful to the jaded eye of an average human. Simple things work best in his art, evoke more raw emotion and longing: he lines tree branches with dandelions and red maple leaves; he hangs large snowballs in trees; ribbons of leaves trail off into the water and spiral icicles circle tree trunks. It's all so simple and captivating, it's really quite astounding. Goldsworthy's art is fleeting. The only reminders of his non-permanent works are photographs. In Wood, Goldsworthy goes beyond the confines of this material and shows us his mastery with the entire spectrum of natural media - snow, ice, rock, leaf, etc. The book is subdivided into sections dealing with each specific medium, the last being Tree - each work is centered around a low-lying branch of a large oak. Nevertheless, I must say that this collection of Goldsworthy's art is slightly inferior to his Collaborations with Nature, which is a better first choice if you are unfamiliar with his principles.

The four books that introduce The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe entice my students to begin reading the original book. It also lets my poor readers enjoy a wonderful classic. I, too, wish that Deborah Maze would complete The Magician's Nephew as well as any of the other Narnia books. She does such a wonderful job of turning this series into captivating read-alouds. I only wish we could entice her to continue on or just complete the books that go with The Wood Between the Worlds.

Debra Maze did an excellent job at putting illustrations to these classics. Her artwork is gorgeous! She has done a wonderful job of keeping the story simple enough for a three to five year old to appreciate and love. In fact, I have happily read it over and over again to my children. All of Debra Maze's Narnia books are perfect for introducing or accompaning children to the world of Narnia.
These books make excellent gifts!

Growing up I loved Narnia, and the wonderful picture books by Deborah Maze have enabled me to introduce Narnia to my 4 year old son who loves them. I tried reading the rest of the original outloud, but he is not ready for that level. This is a wonderful way to introduce children to Narnia. Our only problem is we want more. We would love to see the rest of the "Magicians Nephew" in this format and "The Vogage of the Dawn Treader" would provide wonderful illustrations!

This book inspired me to start carving again. The history in the book as well as the great pictures of works by the masters of this style including Harley Refsal made this not only an interesting read but also an excellent how to guide.

Is it REALLY helpful?

Anyone who wants to try their hand at figure carving...get this book!. It has a few pages giving a background behind this style of carving, but has an EXCELLENT step by step project in the back. I thought I could never do it; all the figures I have seen looked like it took someone years to learn the trade. This may be so but I was able to finish my first figure over about 3-4 days and everyone is astonished at what I have done. Seriously, this book is one of the best Ive seen. Its a "must-have".

Follow the steps and you can do it!!

I have long wanted to learn how to carve, and jealously watched a friend develop this talent. He recommended this book to me. A weekend's worth of following the instructions in the book produced three carvings each a little better than the other. This instructive book also mixes the history of Scandinavian Carving along with rich color pictures of completed carvings. Take your wood working to another level. You to can create a masterpiece.

Fantastic! Informative and Enjoyable

Harley's book leads off by providing a history of Norwegian wood carving, he then provides a large number of examples that represent not only his work but also the work of many leading artists in this field of wood carving. Harley then provides a step by step, easy to follow, lesson on carving Oskar with over 80 pictures. The final section of the book is a large number of patterns that can be used to carve some of the characters highlighted in the many high quality pictures included in the book. This book will become one of the most used books in my collection of wood carving books.

I am only on chapter 3, or step 3 of the 10 steps. So far I have gained a very real, honest and educated understanding of emotional health. Dr. Wood has many real-life examples that make sense. Somewhere along the line you'll find a connection and thus, gain understanding. One thing she takes into consideration is...there is no one size fits all.

Start here! This book will change your life.

Dr. Wood is a seasoned and astute psychiatrist with a wealth of experience. In this book she presents an approach that is easy to understand, and more importantly, easy to implement. She does not present any esoteric analytical or existential ideologies, but rather guides the reader to greater personal insight and problem solving that is practical and achievable. I recommend this book as highly as her first book. Start here and you are on the way to greater personal understanding, growth, self-control, and happiness.

Useful, deep and wonderful tools ... I simply love it !
