SCENTLESS APPRENTICE.

I came across this book and bought it only because I knew that Kurt Cobain of Nirvana had based his song Scentless Apprentice on the book. Had I simply seen the cover of the book I would not have even picked it up to look at it. I expected when I recieved the book that it might be a book which I would read perhaps three chapters of and then become bored with it. I was wrong. I think this may be the best book I have ever read. The story of suffering, the images of a certain time and place, the strangeness of the main character himself and the way the book is written are all amazing. I began reading this book with low expectations and was very pleasantly surprised. I would love to see someone may this book into a good movie. Thinking of the book as a movie I kept picturing someone like Elijah Wood as the main character and quirky actor Jeff Goldblum as the inventor of a flower growing machine in the book. Very highly recommended.

Deliciously decadent.

This lusciously depicted novel is both a vivid evocation of life in eighteenth century Paris and an homage to the least celebrated of our senses--that of smell. In language so onomatopoetic it must have been an almost insuperable challenge for the translator, Suskind tells the tale of Grenouille (Frog), an orphan on the streets of Paris whose hard life would have destroyed a less single-minded pursuer of the sensuous life.

Grenouille's sense of smell is so subtly attuned that he can distinguish a single, elemental scent among the various aromas and stenches bombarding him, all vividly described by Suskind. He can identify individuals from their unique scents, a pursuit so compelling for him that he is willing to kill without conscience to preserve or distill the most glorious of these scents. As Grenouille moves from his apprenticeship in a butcher shop (depicted in nauseatingly odoriferous detail) to that of a perfumer, one of the book's witty ironies, the reader is bombarded with scents so intoxicatingly described that s/he may reach for the nearest spray perfume in order to participate personally in the author's sensuous celebrations.

One of the most gloriously descriptive (and sly) novels you will ever read, it is also an unforgettable commentary on depravity, unfettered arrogance, and ironically misplaced idealism, which culminates in a final, thunderous scene of exuberant depravity. Mary Whipple

A thriller that explores the little known world of smell

Patrick Suskind's, "Perfume," is a beautifully written novel that richly brings to life the world of 19th century France primarily through the scents and aromas that permeated the cities, people and countryside of that time. At its core, "Perfume," is a riveting character study that introduces as its main-character a villain every bit as imaginative and fleshed out in his sense of malice and purpose as Hannibal Lecter. The true beauty in this novel, however, is found in Suskind's detailed musings on his protagonist's extraordinary sense of smell and the way he interprets the world through such a gift.

While "Perfume," is an English translation of a German novel - the translation work is superb and fully conveys the depth of detail and colour that Suskind originally brought to life in his native tongue.

A Brilliant Story of the Best Nose in the World and the Murderer It Is Attached To

"Perfume: The Story of a Murderer" is the brilliant story of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille; born an Orphan in 18th Century Paris, Grenouille had no odor. In a city of stench, this child was born without an odor; wet nurse after wet nurse would give up after a few days because something was just not right. So begins the awful childhood of Grenouille.

He soon realizes that he has an amazing sense of smell; so amazing that as a teenager he picked the smell of the most beautifully smelling girl in all of Paris out a large crowd. Years after having been sold into servitude to a Tanner and accepting his meager existence, Grenouille was awakened by this smell; he needed to possess it. He needed to possess all of the most amazing smells in all of the world. Thus begins the journey of Grenouille...to great the world's greatest perfume to give himself - a man without an odor - the world's greatest smell.

Like "The Pigeon", another brilliant book by Süskind, this book follows the evolving life of one man; a man so possessed by his ability to smell and his ability to recall smell and his ability to recreate that smell, that he must possess the very essence of the smell. And, when that smell belongs to beautiful young women, he must possess their very essence.

Patrick Süskind's command of his prose makes him one of my favorite writers. The opening paragraph of this book is one of the most well crafted opening paragraphs I have every written; in it, he immerses the reader into the stench that was 17th Century Paris (I read this as a metaphor for need for the French to rely on perfume so much) so completely, that it makes your nose wrinkle and your eyes water.

A Guide to my Book Rating System:

1 star = The wood pulp would have been better utilized as toilet paper.
2 stars = Don't bother, clean your bathroom instead.
3 stars = Wasn't a waste of time, but it was time wasted.
4 stars = Good book, but not life altering.
5 stars = This book changed my world in at least some small way.

I finished reading it few days ago and it is as good as I expected and deserves its praise. I read it in two languages, first in English and then in Russian and both translations are quite masterful. The novel does not flatter us humans at all and presents rather pessimistic outlook at the mankind. In this regard, the final two scenes seem to be absolutely brilliant in their morbid irony. Loved the style, the language, the pace and the manner in which Susskind makes myriads of odors he describes so real and the science and craft of perfume making so compelling. Another achievement is exploring the mind, motivations and the terrifying inner world of a genius-murderer with such incredible depth. The writer feels very comfortable in the 18th century's France and we can hear it, see it, touch it and certainly smell it from the pages of this remarkable debut by Patrick Susskind.

I count the days until the movie based on the novel and directed by Tom Tykwer opens here, next month, January 2007.

This text is clearly one of the best in its field. It is well organized and very thorough. The organization and attention to detail make it a great referrence source and an easy read. It should be in anyone's library that takes of critically ill patients. I would highly recommend it for fellows in critical care medicine. The "Pretest" question and answer study guide that is a companion to this text is also excellent and a great tool for the critical care boards. I am anxiously awaiting the next edition.

This is an excellent review of the most common problems found in the clinical practice of Critical Care. It helps with the initial assessment of the patient and formulates a systematic approach to the differential diagnosis and therapeutic plan. The bibliography is updated and it has detailed illustrations and diagrams. Certainly, recommended as reference for those persons involved in the management of Critical Care patients.

I have 25 or more carving books and access to many more. This is easily the best book to own to learn how to carve birds. The author does not hung up on the use of power vs. hand tools. That is left to the student. Each step is clearly explained and shown in clear photos. Buy this book first and jump start your carving hobby.

My husband, Ron, is an excellent carver and has been doing songbirds for about ten years. He brings life to his carvings by burning the feathers in with such detail nearly everyone reaches out to "pet" his birds. This past year he decided to go beyond the "natural" look and asked me to paint a robin so that the gift to our grandson would be from both of us.
I had only worked with watercolors previously and so, having had no experience with acrylic painting, I was still able to follow the instructions in this wonderful book and came out with a robin that looked very real. In fact, when painting one day, I had to answer the door and the guest flinched, thinking I was holding a real robin. Now if I can only come up with her instructions for painting a blue bird and/or a blue herron I would be grateful beyond words.

I love this book!

It just arrived in the mail and I can hardly wait to carve another bird. This book gives the carver just what he needs--patterns from the front and side plus top and bottom views! Lots of black and white photos, but then you get color photos just when you need them--which is when you begin to paint the bird. Plus, I really like the way the birds look. If I can't produce a fine looking bird from this book it will not be from lack of direction. This beats just about any other bird carving book I have, and believe me I have bought a lot of them!

Spiritual Energy Cycles is incredibly straightforward, a clear, step by step guide to an everyday wisdom that has enriched my life. The language is fresh and clear. The voice is not presumptious, but rather friendly, down-homey, and I find that reassuring and refreshing. The book has helped me many times, I have read it again and again, getting both guidance and support from what I have found to be great wisdom in it's pages. I consider it a resource now, for everyday life, and I'm glad to have it!

"Spiritual Energy Cycles" has been one of the greatest gifts in my life. I am new to metaphysical teachings and I consider this book to be my "reference manual" for spiritual growth. I have read it many times and each time it offers just what I need in that moment of my life. I have recently started participating in the "Spiritual Energy Cycles" book discussion group on Jackie's website. The discussions are what I call "REAL LIFE". I have learned something from each and every person in the group and have grown faster than i imagined possible. The moderator of the group has gifted us with sharing, support, understanding and love. I highly recommend the book and the discussion group to anyone who is serious about their spiritual growth. I loved reading this book as it holds many spiritual gems straight from the writers heart. Jackie Woods is powerful in her teachings and shows simple steps to work through patterns we've all gathered throughout our lives. The format of Spiritual Energy Cycles makes it easy to apply to any situation.

Since reading the book I have MANY times caught myself wrapped in emotion and stuck in a mental thought and said, 'Now, what's the bottom line here?!' This grounds me and allows me to move through my creation of growth! Then comes the manifestation part of the cycle. That's what it's all about ... it's a cycle! I would reccomend this book to anyone who is on a spiritual growth path. I re-read this book on a regular basis.

The information provided in this book is absolutely amazing. I've been a highly dedicated student of metaphysical teachings since 1984, studying dozens of different teachers, and I THOUGHT I was on a powerful Spiritual path - until I came across the information in this book. That's not to say that I did not have tremendous Spiritual growth before - I did - but anyone who is interested in TURBO-CHARGING their growth will count this book as "mandatory reading". If you liked "Conversations with God" by Neale Donald Walsh, this little 75 page book can take you even further down the path than you imagined. I've had dozens of favorite teachers over the years, from Stuart Wilde to Ram Dass, Deepak Chopra to Wayne Dyer - but the information in this book helped bring about wonderful healings in my physical body that all the other teachings did not accomplish. To be specific, I had cronic rib neuritis - VERY painful - that would go away after 3-4 accupressure sessions, only to fire back up 2-3 months later. The teachings in Spiritual Energy Cycles healed this problem - never to return! In addition, I suffered cronic, perpetual anxiety for over thirty years before coming into the understanding of how to put these teachings into effect in my life. Needless to say, I highly recommend this book - and ESPECIALLY the "companion tape" by Jackie Woods on "Meditation and Needs" - to anyone who is serious about maximizing their Spiritual growth. I noticed in the interview of Jackie Woods that she is writing a new book, so I'll be the first in line!

I first became acquainted with the work of essayist Willem Lange through his appearances on the Vermont Public Television program "RFD," which normally ends its weekly broadcast with a piece by this wordsmith. The essays in this charming little book are culled from other writings and are perfect examples of Mr. Lange's style. With a minimum of very well chosen words, Mr. Lange paints a detailed picture of people, places, and events and wraps us in his love for all. There are some very heart-felt expressions here: A Letter to a newborn grandchild; A sudden understanding of his wife's life-long torment; An appreciation of past leadership provided by a mentor. In all, there are 18 tiny gems here, none longer than four pages, but the scope of their sentiment is unending. This is a book to treasure and read over and over again. If only it were longer.

Its a great adventure for the imagination and the wonderful illustrations really help take the children into the fun. One big plus is the way it motivates kids into taking care of their teeth. When I was younger, this book was in my dentist's office. Every time we would go to the dentist, I would either read it, or my mom would read it for me. It's a very cute book, and it teaches kids to take care of their teeth, as well as not to lie. I remember I took very good care of my teeth, because when they fell out, I would want it to go to the "Hall of Perfect Teeth." I love this book!

Every time I read this book the children beg me to read it again. Then they line up for "turns" to read it for themselves. I can not reccomend this book highly enough. An easy to use, well documented series of innovative life-like wheeled toys that can all be made with a basic set of woodworking tools and limited woodworking equipment - Drill Press, Disc/Belt Sander and Bandsaw.
Excellent advice on sourcing off-cuts of highly coloured timber to create the effect of tyres, headlights, fuel tanks etc.
If you have a wood lathe many of the wheels and fuel tanks can be turned to add to the enjoyment of making these TOYS - not models.

Highly recommended to all woodworkers as the ideas presented in this book can be applied to all fields of woodworking.

Without question this book should be in every woodworker's library.

YOU WILL NEED AT MINIMUM A BAND SAW, DRILL PRESS AND COMBINATION BELT/DISC SANDER WHICH CAN BE OBTAINED FOR UNDER A HUNDRED DOLLARS. I HAVE NO HESITATION IN GIVING THIS 5 STARS!!!!!

If you want to be successful when you turn green wood or newly cut lumber on your lathe. I recommend purchasing this book and reading it all the way through before you begin your wood turning project. When you use green wood there are different procedures that you need to follow than when you use dried lumber. I had tried to turn some green logs on my lathe and had many problems with wood cracking and was very unhappy with the results. After purchasing this book I learned the reasons why my previous attempts had not been successful. I only wish I had gotten the book at the same time I purchased my new lathe. It is an excellent resource on how to use green logs and newly cut lumber that can add flexibility and save money on wood costs when you use "found wood" and cut the logs yourself.

Great and a must have for all turners. The book is more oriented toward bowl turning but covers a ton on green turning with plenty of pics and diagrams. Michael O`Donnell goes to great length to educate the reader on how wood dries based on where it is cut form the tree.

Great book for anyone interested in turning

As a beginning turner, I searched for books that were both informative and interesting to read. This book approaches turning with 'green' in mind but also has some very good information about wood properties and turning in general. Very much worth buying even if you are an experienced turner.

This is a great textbook. It's clearly written, and it's actually enjoyable to read. The author appears to have had a good time writing it, and included many limericks, engaging examples, and other items that make this textbook anything but dry.

Awesome book

I had to buy this book for a class and expected it to be very dry and... well.. a textbook. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find humor from the authors of this book, allowing me to actually enjoy a required reading. The book is written in an easy to understand language that doesnt boggle the mind and overwhelm. Great book!

This was the text used in my Human Sexuality course at Western Michigan University in the fall of 2007. I enjoyed reading it, very thorough and indepth, covering a wide range of sexual topics. The authors, who are also educators, use humor at times in the text, as well as paying respect to the seriousness of the topic. Very fair and unbiased in my opinion on it's take of sexual pathways taken in life. It includes a CD-ROM which has additional information from each chapter in the form of discussions and interviews the student can watch. A text that is user friendly, and incorporates a wide variety of psychological patheways and perspectives, without endorsing one as "correct." I would recommend it to any Professor teaching the course.
