Excellent history of World's most revered sport competition
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-08-14
This book is one of the best sports reference books ever written. Byron Butler has assembled a season-by-season analysis of the Football Association Challenge Cup, dating right from the start(1871). Every final(and replay) gets covered with team-listings, attendance figures, photographs, and statistics. There are also lots of photogarphs and advertisements from down the years, lots of interesting related material(info on star playes, the men who founded the competition, the giant killers etc. etc.) This, added to the fact that Mr Butler is obviously a devout fan, passionate about the game, make this a must buy for any fan of football("soccer" to Americams).

This is a great book to have whether you're just starting out in the game, or you're a seasoned professional. This rule book covers everything that could possibly happen on the golf course, and the means by which one is to handle those problems. I highly suggest this to anyone who wants to play the game, and play it the way it's supposed to be played.

Were to Find a Math Problem
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-04
I admit I didn't read the entire book. But don't think that discredits my review. You see this is a special math book... One that you don't read cover to cover. You simply skim through the book and pick a unsolved problem that interest you. So you see it isn't read cover to cover like a textbook. And that is what makes this such an excellent math book. The book isn't about remembering rules it is about problem solving. And the organization of the book helps in gathering facts and understanding how others have approached the problem.

Unsolved problems is part of what mathematics are based on. Most of the content is easy to understand at undergraduate level. For fun I recommend only reading the problem's description and do your own research and later compare it to the second section of the book. I have worked on Prime numbers and have made some progress. (Just check my profile.) Math work does not get done without math problems. So if you are looking for a learning experience this is an excellent place to start.

Essential background information on old, unsolved problems
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-10-31
If progress towards the solution of the unsolved problems is to be continuous, then those in the field must be reminded on a regular basis. Furthermore, it is pretty clear that many of these problems will not be solved using "traditional" approaches, but by some sort of back or side door method. Therefore, those in other areas of mathematics need to see the unsolved problems presented. One never knows when someone working in an area that appears to be unrelated will read a problem and realize that what they are doing can be used to obtain a solution.
This work not only presents the problems, but also gives enough background to allow the non-specialist to understand them. Several leading theorems and their proofs are given, all in a clear, concise style. Many exercises are given at the end of sections, with hints toward solution at the back of the book.
The methods used would also allow this book to be used as a text in an advanced undergraduate colloquium or beginning graduate seminar in the golden oldies of mathematics. The competent undergraduate will have no difficulty comprehending the majority of the material.
An excellent addition to any collection, this book is a key. For it is clear that many of the unsolved problems will be defeated by one who never started with that intent, but saw the problem and had the correct leap of insight.

Important Classic, Difficult to Read Due to Poor Writing
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-09
Almost as important as the text are the Preface, Foreword and Introduction (rare to have all three.) Robinson's Preface puts Carter's book into context and prepares the reader for an interesting, but daunting read. Robinson is absolutely correct in his discussion of the importance of this book as it should be read by anyone interested in the Indian Wars of the West.

This book was written by a real participant of those wars, and as such, is hardly a revisionist, politically correct rendition of how the Army and settlers wronged the Indians. It must be remembered, although Carter was ignorant of this fact, that the Comanches had been forced out of the mountains of Colorado by the Utes in the middle of the 18th century, and in turn expelled or exterminated the existing tribes in the plains of Texas. Now the Americans were coming and displacing the Comanches in one of the inexorable changes that history brings.

MacKenzie was on a par with Andrew Jackson as being one of the two most successful Indian fighters in US history. He graduated 1st in his West Point class of 1862 and rose during the Civil War to Major General at the age of twenty-five. His Indian campaigns were fought against a number of tribes from Mexico to South Dakota, and although he sometimes made mistakes, he did not make them twice. He became mentally ill, possibly in part from being maimed at Petersburg or suffering a later head injury, was retired from the Army in 1884 and died in obscurity in 1889 at the age of forty-nine. For his remarkable successes and military innovations, MacKenzie has been roundly ignored by contemporary academic historians. As always, the history we learn is not what actually happened, but what is written concerning what happened. That is why the serious student must read this book.

As Robinson notes, the prose is overblown and sometimes factually incorrect -- a typical problem in eyewitness accounts. Fortunately, the exaggerations are relatively easy to ascertain from the author's obvious efforts to add color (when none is needed.) It should be emphasized that this is a reprint of the 1935 edition, which was itself a collection of stories written by the author as early as 1886. He passed away in 1936 at the age of 91, the last survivor of the 4th Cavalry who had served under MacKenzie.

If one wishes to become acquainted with MacKenzie and understand Army life in the 1870s fighting Indians in the West, I can think of no better book. It clearly corrects the great harm Hollywood had done to this era, and will introduce the reader to a life he will be hard pressed to find anywhere else. Therefore I gave it a 5 rating, in spite of its obvious flaws.

Robert Carter's book is of American History

This book represents the viewpoints of a "policing" time for the United States of the North. Without some form of correctiveness, lawlessness and savageness would have ruled the day and Texas would not be a part of the nation today.
It is exciting, horrifying, glorifying, and it is sad at times.
This book must be pulled from the graveyard of literature for open forums to discuss the past. Without actual accounts of yesterday protrayed today, everyone will be able to re-write history to match their own personal or social, economical, and political viewpoints instead. An American treasure is being lost to the dusts of time...James L. Brown

Great for all levels of cooking
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-28
I got this six years ago as a bachelor who had barely touched a stove. One of my first cookbooks, the "One Dish" cooking is what was appealed to me. The instructions are easy to follow and the dishes range from very basic to expert. This does have a lot of casserole and stew variations. However, I found quite a few surprises one would not normally think of and it does not stick to Americana cuisine. There is Latin, Asian, European and Middle eastern as well. Chapters are broken down by meat, and course and includes a great one for desserts. Basic cook and bakewear required and a few spices outside the norm is all you need to get the full enjoyment out of this book. Still one of my favorite cookbooks.

One-Dish Meals provides succulent recipes, no-kidding easy, with beautiful graphics and can't miss directions. For the novice or busy cook, the meals are timed so you know how long each recipe takes to make. Because the meals are one-dish simple, clean up is snappy. Want pretty meals? This is the book for you. Fish, veggies, desserts, soups, it's all in there. This writer is an average cook, but this cookbook makes me look great!

This is the book that sparked the debate

Review Date: 2003-06-26
In 1980 Richard Rice published this book about the problem of evil and the nature of divine foreknowledge in relation to mankind's free will. The book was quickly forgotten and was out of print in a few years. However, there were a few prominent theologians who read it and were intriqued. Jump forward 14 years to 1994 when Clark Pinnock along with other authors (Richard Rice included) published "The Openness of God" (the use of Rice's title apparently a tribute to this book's influence) and brought the open theism debate to prominence. It's interesting how a seemingly insignificant book can years later have a huge impact.
Personally the book was a jolt. I was comfortable with my view of God and resistant to changing it. But this book opened my mind to new possibilities. That in itself is a good enough reason to read it.

God as An Involved Spectator
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 1998-03-21
This book was an eye opener for me. It straightforwardedly describes a vison of God that allows for human freedom and that squares with the Bible. This is not Arminianism or Calvinism but a new view. Gone is predestination, gone is a God who is an author of evil. It pictures God as not knowing the future but an involved spectator rooting for us to live according to our consciences. Very interesting chapters on prophecy, efficacy of prayer, sovereignty, group predestination. Short but pack full of ideas.

This book is a delight

That's an odd thing to say about a Problem Solver book, but it is true -it's a delight considering the standard I'm accustomed to in optics textbooks. They're all like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. Get enough of them and read them all and there's a chance you can see the big picture. This study guide has virtually every kind of optics problem you could imagine, especially in a classroom setting, with detailed solutions better than any textbook. The following is the table of contents.

1. Waves
2. Velocity of Light
3. Physical Properties of Light
4. Rectilinear Propagation of Light
5. Refraction
6. Refraction at Curved Surfaces
7. Dioptrics
8. Opthalmic Optics
9. Interference
10. Applied Interferometry
11. Diffraction
12. Resolution
13. Absorption and Scattering
14. Polarization
15. Ray Tracing
16. Plane Mirrors
17. Curved Mirrors
18. Lenses
19. Optical Instruments
20. Aperture and Field of Optical Instruments
21. Aberration
22. The Prism
23. Dispersion
24. Photometry
25. Color, Illuminance, and Alphanumeric Displays
26. Lasers and Holography
27. Atomic Spectrum and Thermal Radiation

I keep a copy at work in case I forget something - I always do. If you read Hecht's Optics (4th Edition) and in parallel work the problems in Schaum's Outline of Optics, then come to this book. Understanding Schaum's proves you understand how to work along the rules of optics. Understand the problems in this book and you've proved to yourself you can take those rules and think outside of the box. However, this study guide is particularly weak on Fourier optics. For that subject I recommend Linear Systems, Fourier Transforms, and Optics (Wiley Series in Pure and Applied Optics). It's expensive, but worth it for a good understanding of that particular part of optics.

I found this book to be an excellent resource for the topic. The author has covered the major subtopics in the field. His examples are varied and well worded. I was impressed with the number of different problem types. His solutions are thorough, and he uses diagrams throughout the book. The math is sufficient and not oversimplified and requires an advanced knowledge of math techniques. This book is written for a serious student of optics, and is an excellent supplement for such students.

This informative book, with chapters by several different psychologists, is a wonderful balancing of the one-sided "positive psychology" movement. One size does not fit all of us !! And this book respects and understands our individual differences. I particularly appreciate the chapter by Julie Norem, Ph.D., which previews her insightful new book, The Positive Power of Negative Thinking, about the psychology of Defensive Pessimism.

If you are like me and feel that optimism and pessmism can be both good and bad, you must check out this book! The chapters are interesting, thorough, and cover alot of ground. One or two of the dozen or so chapters can be a bit dense however. Nonetheless, this is by far the most balanced book I've seen written on optimism by some top people like Martin Seligman (who wrote Learned Optimism). It was refreshing to see that the cup can be both half empty and half full at the same time! (The Ying and Yang art cover is absolutely fab if you're into such things.)
