I'm a member of The Churchill Center, of which Mr Langworth is a director, and for years, I've been an occasional customer of his Churchillbooks business. I've emailed or written him a few times over the years, and so I like to think that -- through my pesky and amateurish questions -- I bear a little tiny bit of the responsibility for the publication of this excellent book. Because now that I have this, I won't have to bother Mr Langworth in person any more. I'm sure he rests more easily knowing this.

The 'Connoisseur's Guide' is, without exaggeration, the Book of the Century about the books written by The Man of the (Twentieth) Century. From Sir Winston's rarest and most obscure titles to Book-of-the-Month-Club volumes owned by millions, Mr Langworth has catalogued, evaluated, and given us his excellent personal insights and opinions about them. For each title, including posthumous collections, the Guide gives us a bit of history, excerpts from contemporaneous reviews, and a listing of every known imprint and variant, including translations into other languages.

I'm not, either by temperament or financial status, a collector of fine volumes. I just love to read Sir Winston. And I have found this Guide to be every bit as useful to me as I believe it must be for the most high-end of Churchillo-bibliophiles. Mr Langworth is to be commended for the remarkable amount of work that went into compiling this comprehensive Guide. It is a volume that belongs on the shelf of any student of Churchilliana.

A quirky and engaging guide to all of Churchill's books.

A Connoisseur's Guide is a quirky and engaging tour of all the editions of Churchill's key texts. Before a debate over my use of "quirky" in an endearing manner, let it be known to all that Langworth is the major American dealer in books by and about Churchill and as such has a unique view of Churchill as filtered through his work. Others regularly handle Churchill material (including the author of this piece, who, in the spirit of full disclosure, it should be noted is praised in the acknowledgments and cited authoritatively in the text), but none take into stock and send back out Into the world a fraction of the books, pamphlets and magazines that pass through Langworth's hands. Indeed, in his introduction he claims "one purpose" he had in compiling the Guide was to forestall the question most frequently put to him by novice buyers: "What exactly am I holding in my hands?" With this Guide in hand, the answer might still require one more call to Langworth; but once the aspirant grasps the bibliographic language with which he narrates this textual tale, home-schooling should quickly replace classroom instruction. The Guide is put together with admirable clarity, even simplicity. For each text, from The Story of the Malakand Field Force in 1898 to the posthumous ephemeral publications, Langworth first provides an eminently readable redaction, along with some solid background of each book's place in the canon. In these preambles Langworth's voice resonates eloquently, providing a sense that we are being guided by a generous, avuncular Diogenes with knowledge of all things Churchillian. Following his introductory remarks, Langworth deploys excerpts from both contemporary and modern commentators; his use of supporting and dissenting opinions offers a novel approach to understanding how a text was greeted upon publication and how it continues to be perceived. Throughout Langworth relies on the bibliographical research of the late Frederick Woods, who devoted decades to tracing Churchill's works, and whose bibliography, to date, has not been superseded. Langworth states that his goal is to amplify, not expand upon, Woods's early work, and in this, I think he is too humble: he clarifies innumerable pockets of obfuscation transmitted by Woods (one need only read his lucid discussion of The Malakand Field Force to see how far we've come). He also, however, occasionally nudges up against the hubristic: definitionally, Woods is the text with which Langworth is bantering, and insomuch as the preponderance of readers will not be familiar with Woods, his frequent taglines "see Woods" and "Woods incorrectly" seem a bit bullying. Maybe I'm being too pedantic, but the paragraphs devoted to the physical components of the books are similar enough in both format and language to Woods to have generated a feeling that Langworth, now and again, set up his predecessor only to knock him down. Most readers, I suspect, will breeze through the technical patches on book production, press-runs and binding variants and will be rewarded with the concluding categories with which the description of each edition ends. The first of these is labeled "Comments" and in it Langworth incorporates the substantial anecdotal knowledge he has gathered in his decades of handling Churchill books. In these passages he demonstrates the extent to which he has attained true "connoisseurship," that state of grace to which all collectors of objects aspire, and he communicates his wisdom with the ease bred of confidence. For example, in describing the Times Book Club issue of Lord Randolph Churchill he notes: "nicely if not elaborately bound (it lacks the gilt coat of arms) it is an adequate if not dramatic looking set of books." And about the first edition of India:: "softbound copies on the market today outnumber hardbound copies at least twenty to one...." These are, to my mind, truths that could only be proffered succinctly and elegantly after years of study and reflection. In a late interview, the American novelist Bernard Malamud suggested that "clear writing is clear thinking," and in those pithy observations, in which Langworth shares his clear thinking in clean writing, the Guide earns a place on the list of essential reference works devoted to Churchill as author. The Guide is sturdily produced; the photographs are attractive. I wish a number of the more compelling, early books had been shot in color, though some appear on the color dust jacket. To those of us who esteem Churchill's accomplishments, this work offers one more reason to stand in reverence: the titles and text roll across seven decades with clarity and logic. The Guide both elevates and entertains-and you can't ask for much more for your money, can you?

As the first in a series of everyday commentaries on Scripture, Dr. Schmidt's work on Revelation is a wonderful place to start. With the huge popularity of the Left Behind series and other similar books, a true, in-depth study of Scripture is refreshing. When you read this work, you are able to unpack what The Revelation of St. John is actually saying, not what "scholars" tell you it says. A man with unparalleled credentials as an Anglican priest and Biblical scholar, Dr. Schmidt is a wonderful storyteller who has an amazing ability to clarify one of the most misunderstood books of the Bible.

A Journey of Complexity and Clarity

It was refreshing to read a text on Revelation that did not contain a blow by blow description of earth's final days, the judgment of all humankind and the transformation of heaven and earth. This book is based on the whole of the Scripture and not just the parts of it that suit us. At one point, the author quotes William Sloan Coffin who once observed that the problem with Americans and the Bible is that we read it like a drunk uses a lamppost. We lean on it; we don't use it for illumination. I found the clarity of this book to be helpful for adult study groups and the depth of the book as a possible use for seminary classrooms. It politely but ruthlessly demolishes the "Left Behind" approach and outlines an alternative to reading the Book of Revelation, informed by historical and literary criticism. I was made aware of such important, complex topics as the character of Revelation as oral communication; the performative nature of various genres, and the inescapable presence of violent, vengeful themes in apocalyptic literature. As I completed the book I sensed that I had been on a journey that honored complexity and brought me to a degree of clarity.

In "Cooking Up Fun for Kids with Diabetes" the authors dedicate the first two chapters to providing a basic understanding of diabetes. The first chapter discusses diabetes with a slant toward helping a child understand it. The second one is from the perspective of what the adult parent needs to know.

The book contains simple recipes rated on a one, two, or three hand system with one being the easiest and three being the hardest. Each recipe provides information on serving size, exchanges, calories, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, fiber, protein, and carbohydrates. Some are just easy recipes that a child can do; others have been adapted to make it more fun for children. For example, an ordinary grilled cheese sandwich becomes a toasted cheese person.

"Cooking Up Fun for Kids with Diabetes" is a fun book of recipes and food related crafts for any child and a recommended read.

I was delighted to read about this cookbook in my local newspaper and ran out to buy a copy right away. My eleven year old daughter was recently diagnosed with diabetes, so this book about nutrition/healthy cooking is an answer to my prayers. In addition to the fun and great-tasting recipes with complete nutrition information, there are clear explanations about the type 1 and type 2 diabetes conditions and even some fun "non-food" projects. My daughter and I spent a weekend afternoon in the kitchen making Fruit Filled Quesadillas- messy, but fun!

This is the third installment. In plain language, the author tackles many difficult cross-examination issues. The author uses easy to understand examples to illustrate complex litigation processes and skills that the expert witness must master before taking the stand. As a lawyer, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in expert testimony. I give this book my highest rating. Also, check out the other two books on expert testimony by the author.

I have just finished reading Stanley Brodsky's Coping With Cross Examination. I absorbed it like a sponge. Although most of the book is devoted to testimony by mental health experts in criminal court, there is much in the book that is very relevant in other contexts. I have rarely been asked or required to testify in criminal cases, but I have provided expert medical testimony at hundreds of Social Security disability appeals hearings, complete with judge and lawyer. In that role there is often conflicting evidence and the expert must integrate all of the relevant evidence, and most importantly be prepared, professional, impartial, and provide relevant understandable testimony. Dr Brodsky's book clearly speaks to those points. The book is full of good examples, good humor, and good reasoning. It is the kind of book that I am likely to consult again to help me in my work. I highly recommend this book to any mental health professional who may be asked to provide sworn testimony. I also recommend it to those who may not testify but who may be retained by lawyers for evaluations or consultations. Dr. Brodsky's ethics are superb. This book is a very practical and helpful guide to working with lawyers and judges.

An Essential Guide to Nursing Practice with Children
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2001-08-24
As pediatric nursing knowledge and competencies are becoming more critical to assure that we are providing quality care for children and their families, a book has emerged to become an essential tool in education and development in the special areas of nursing practice with children. The Core Curriculum for the Nursing Care of Children and Their Families is the product of multiple collaborations with experts in pediatric and child health nursing to establish a baseline of information that all nurses who are entrusted with the care of sick or injured children should have.

Inspired by documents to support the scope of practice and standards for pre-licensure and early professional education of pediatric nurses, endorsed and reviewed by leaders of the Society of Pediatric Nurses (SPN), and developed by a team of nationally recognized authorities in child health, the Core Curriculum synthesizes the essential concepts of care across developmental stages of childhood, phases of illness, and environments of care delivery. With its efficient outline and bullet-point style of text, it provides the reader, lecturer, preceptor, learner, or pediatric nurse who is studying for certification with a streamlined flow of information that gets at the "essentials" of content from classic pediatric textbooks. In addition, at the end of each chapter, readers will find an extensive bibliography and multiple choice study questions to test their understanding of the material.

The book is divided into three major sections: (1) child, family, and societal factors; (2) clinical problems or areas; and (3) care delivery. Each section is a compilation of chapters by clinicians with particular expertise integrated with useful figures, charts, and tables of comparison landmarks, guidelines, and reference points. The sections have been identified from the SPN documents to represent the wide range of knowledge that pediatric nurses need to know.

Section 1 provides an overview of the concepts of (a) anatomic structures, physiologic, psychological, and spiritual processes in neonates, infants, children and adolescents; (b) health; (c) separation, loss and bereavement; and (d) economic; social, and political influences. Section 2 covers the concepts of (a) safety and injury prevention; (b) children with acute illness or injuries and their families; and (c) children with a chronic condition, disability, or special health need and their families. Section 3 covers the important concepts of (a) family-centered care; (b) cultural competence; (c) communication; and (d) values and moral and ethical reasoning. It is clear that every practicing nurse who cares for a sick child should be grounded in these topics with an appreciation for the differences among children and a philosophy that families should be key to the health provider's care planning.

How useful is this beautifully bound book to the busy professional? Consider the following situations: Where would one find a collection of essential information specific to children and their families in an easy-to-read outline form if one were studying for certification in pediatric nursing, child health nursing, or preparing for licensure questions in pediatrics? Where would a pediatric nursing instructor look to develop instructional materials that are central to all content that pediatric nursing students should know? What resource could practicing nurses turn to in order to update their knowledge about pediatric nursing if children were going to be patients in their units? The Core Curriculum for Nursing Care of Children and Their Families is a comprehensive, sturdy, invaluable supplement to any hospital or clinic library shelf. In today's complex, busy hospital environments, nurses are all called upon to deliver nursing care to a variety of culturally diverse, clinically compromised patients. Sometimes, health environments obligate nurses with "general credentials" to serve special clientele because of special situations or circumstances. And in some cases, our general hospital units become empty beds for sick children to fill because of some disease or care-need situation. In these environments, it is even more necessary that nurses are prepared to deliver competent care even if their clients are not adults. We are all keenly aware that children with health problems are not medical-surgical patients who are young - but rather, they are clients and families who trust that nurses know what to do in any situation. References such as the Core Curriculum for the Nursing Care of Children and Their Families should be the Bible of information for those special situations, and the mandatory baseline knowledge for all nurses who prepare to take care of children.

Jesus in Georgia

It took a New Testament scholar and Georgia peanut farmer named Clarence Jordan to make familiar Bible stories new and fresh. Joseph and Mary, from old-line Georgia families, travel from Valdosta to Gainesville, GA, where Mary gives birth and puts the baby to rest in an apple box. Paul and Barney travel to New Orleans and beyond telling the story of Jesus in all the White churches. These spatial and temporal transformations of the Gospel According to Luke ("Jesus' Doings") and the Acts of the Apostles ("The Happenings") rescue the Bible from the dustbin of history and re-instill it with the newness and excitement that the first hearers of these stories experienced. This volume, as well as Jordan's other "versions" of New Testament texts, provide a powerful new understanding of the roots of the Christian faith.

Jesus Came to America

Sometimes I feel like I've read the stories too many times. I already know what's going to happen, I already know what the characters do. Yes, God can give new insights every time, but sometimes it can seem like that movie you've watched 100 times and it isn't as exciting as a new movie.

Jordan takes the stories, and makes the live again. Just tweaking location and culture, they are different, they reveal far more of what the original authors wanted us to know, they throw excitement back into the mix. Rather than simply reading these as devotion, I found myself engrossed, staying up late at night again, as if I was reading a simple novel, to find out what would happen next, what new twist would occur.

So a man is waylaid on his waylaid on the way from Atlanta to Albany, and a white minister and a white Gospel song leader passed him by. A black man stopped and helped him, giving his last two dollars to make sure the hospital cared for him. Then Jesus asks the (white) Sunday School teacher, who would you consider to be your neighbor? He replies, "Why, of course, the nig- I mean, er...well, er...the one who treated him kindly." Jesus replies, "Well, then, *you* get going and start living like that!"

With such vinnettes Jordan moves us into the American South in the 50's, where a movement rises up lead by this one white guy Jesus, calling people to love each other, whether they are black or white. And then one of his followers in the second book of The Happenings goes bout and preaches desegregation, for the Gospel came to all, whether white or black. This is the application of life that Christ talked about. But remember to read these with the right accent!

Jesus did come to America- but in 1950, not 33 AD.

Highly, highly recommended for all student counseling programs! (This is a RARE find!)

Now in an updated and expanded second edition, Creating An Inclusive School is the collaborative editorial effort of education specialist Richard A. Villa and special education credential and masters programs coordinator Jacqueline S. Thousand (College of Education, California State University, San Marcos). Inclusive education, loosely defined as a process by which schools strive to give an education to all students with disabilities in such a manner that the differently abled students are not excluded from the general student body or separately schooled as little as possible, is described and presented as more than a series of strategies; it is a belief system that promotes and optimum educational environment for all. Individual essays by a diverse assortment of experts discuss such issues as the rationales for creating and maintaining inclusive schools, promising practices that foster inclusive education, practical advice concerning inclusive education, "voices of inclusion" individual and community testimonies. An excellent overview and resource guide especially recommended for teachers, principals, and other educational professionals.

This book provides all the answers for people who think inclusion can't work--that it's too expensive, that parents of typically-developing kids will reject it, that severely disabled kids won't get anything from it.

While I appreciated all the "how-to's" and a clear description of the philosophy behind true inclusion, I found most inspiring the true stories of how children with very involved disabilities grew, learned and became friends with their classmates through an effective inclusion model.

This is a must-read for both parents and educators.
