This is the best book I've ever read about the healing journey, and I've read a lot of those books. "Kathy" tells it like it is. It shows that someone does understand.

I can barely find words that adequately express what Yvonne Vera accomplishes in her writing. This book contains some of the most gorgeous language I have ever read. It is dense, poetic, sensual, muscular, challenging, honest, deeply humane. I read and reread it, and each time I am lifted to a blissful, mind-swelling state of aesthetic arrest.
You may not enjoy Vera's style if you tend to prefer a light-hearted read. But if you enjoy a sensitivity for language, it will be pure joy. Your mind glides with the smoothly sustained surface of the writing, undulates with its poetic rhythms, startles with her revelations, lifted to your new eyes like some just-born thing, dangerous or gentle, held in the tender palm of her cupped hands.
The story lines are described well enough in the product description above, but it is a mistake to read Vera's writing with eyes focused on the scaffolding of character and plot. She has imploded that structure, sinking to some deeper level and creating the story from the inside out, with a pure and powerful voice that has the impact of poetry in the space of fiction.
This fiction isn't well-crafted, it is inspired.

Woman in the Closet is a tense, sexually-engaging mystery. Harvey is a master of the form. I'll definately be searching out other books by the same author.

I ran across this book while I worked at a library and was instantly drawn to it. This was the first book I'd ever run seen that dealt specifically with the anger, grief, shame and the raging question of "Why Me, God?". So many people who have suffered from sexual abuse/incest feel abandoned by God and turn thier back on him, only to feel a growing spiritual emptyness.
This book deals with healing your relationship with God in a spiritual (not religious) manner and realizing that you CAN have a nuturing relationship with God and begin to fill that emptyness. The question of "Why Me, God?" may never be satisfactorily answered for you but after reading this book you won't feel so alone, shamed and angry with God. You will begin to find comfort once more in the Bible and other spirtiual/religious works. All in all this book is very important step in healing from sexual abuse.
Now that you can enjoy a spiritual relationship you may be ready to move on to deeper more meaningful personal relationship with others in your life. Do make this little known book a part of your healing/triumphing library.
Don't let your abuser rob you any longer of all the joy God can bring into your life.

The back cover tells us that Charles Clark spent some years as a deckhand in the British Merchant Navy before embarking on his career as a research chemist. This background, together with his obvious skills as a different kind of researcher, is clearly evident in the expertise shown in the writing of an engrossing book.
We are introduced to the main story by way of fascinating vignettes of sailors cast adrift and eventually forced to resort to cannibalism. Then on to the Cospatrick, a three-masted barque which sailed from Britain for New Zealand in 1874.
Carrying a general cargo which included 6,000 gallons of spirits, the Cospatrick had 429 emigrants on board in addition to a crew of 44 and 4 passengers, when it caught fire and sank in the South Atlantic. The account of the fire, the desperate battle to save the ship, the panic and confusion as boats were lowered, are all graphically retold. Nearly 500 people died. In fact, there were only three survivors, three men who were later traumatised even further by the public exposure of their cannibalism.
The book is also very informative regarding the danger of life at sea generally in the 19th century. I was stunned, for example, to see an 1873 Board of Trade wreck chart reproduced that shows "Locations of the approximately 800 ship casualties that occurred on and around the coast of Britain during the first six months of 1873." (Yes, that really is 800!)
There are copious end-notes, six appendices and a good index. 'Women and Children Last' will be of interest to most general readers and deserves a permanent place in the library of any centre of maritime studies. I wish I'd had it when I was teaching English at the Portuguese Naval Academy. My students, I am sure, would have found it fascinating.

Easy to read book with numerous examples for handouts and activities. May apply to group, as well as individual counseling for survivors of childhood sexual assault and abuse. The multi-modal approach incorporated several theories, focusing on the goals of feeling better, rather than just getting through one's issues.

No poem or account in this book is an easy read. They all have teeth to tear at your heart. Ms. Claman has collected works from both well-known and first-time writers to show - no - drag the reader into the eyes and minds of people who have experienced abuse. More than anything in the world, I wish this kind of collection was unnecessary. But since abuse still exists, I'm very glad that Elizabeth Claman, and her contributors, have come together to make this book. Read only if you're ready to make this journey with them. There is a section with a great deal of hope at the end, so skip to that if you're beginning to feel there's no end to the pain. (Note: I am a contributor, but I feel that I would write the same way if I had not been chosen.)

Andrew Durham made his PhD in Applied Social Studies from the University of Warwick and with more than 20 years of experience in working with children and adolescents the likely candidate as author for this book. The book is published as a partnership between Wiley and NSPCC, the United Kingdom National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, in a book series that explores current issues relating to the prevention of child abuse and child protection.
This book is about the lives of Justin (22 years), Paul (23), Colin (18), Liam (22), Sean (21), David (15) and Ryan (15), all sexually abused in their adolescence by their headmaster, strangers, teacher or the local computer club man called Harry. The victims and perpetrators all male. It is hoped that Wiley and NSPCC will find an author to write the book on the child male victim and the female perpetrator.
The life story method of data collection is used in order to analyse and understand the impact of the child sexual abuse on each of these seven boys. This is a book about relationships, where a trust has been broken between an adult, usually in a power position, and a child in his care. This is a serious harm that will stay with these children for the rest of their lives and Andrew Durham has managed to describe their struggle for survival, the framework for therapy and assistance in recovery with seven case-examples.
An important book for the professional working with children or adolescents, who has experienced child sexual abuse.
