Not for the casual reader, this book gives a valuable historical background for the serious study of modern organized ritual abuse and the technology of control of the many by the few.

He sure knows how to surprise the reader!!!Review Date: 1999-02-08
The seting for this book is London - thousands of miles from the New York setting of his first book - but still a bustling metropolis with plenty of scope for thrills and excitement. In fact the story begins in a busy square in the city, where a teenage boy is stalked and stabbed to death after arguing with his brother.
He is involved in some sort of wheeler-dealing with some big time criminals. But that's only half the story. In a parallel story, a rich businessman vanishes and a maverick lawyer Emmett Freeman) is called in to make some discreet inquiries. But the two cases are connected and that's where the fun really starts.
It all centers around an addictive perfume called Gold, made by the missing billionaires company. And of course there's also a beautiful heroine: a female police detective (Karen Rousson) who is the perfect foil for the hero.
What impresses me so much about Kessler's style is the way the author blends law, science, computers and the foibles of human nature in a tale that has you alternately facsinated and amused, perplexed and excited. The author explains arcane concepts in a way that the ordinary reader can understand, but never loses sight of the fact that he is writing about people.
The marvelous thing about the plot of this book is that it provides several surprises along the way as well as the big double whammy at the end! While this book has fewer courtroom scenes than the last one, it is better in some ways and a real joy to read.
If you like surprises and a book that keeps you guessing till the end I have one thing to say: Read this book!

It's Depressing, But True, And Knowledge Is PowerReview Date: 2004-12-30
The book was more of a validation for me than new information. That validation, however, must have been sorely needed, as I finished reading it in a couple of hours. Whatever stage you are at in dealing with chronic illness, there is a need to share information such as the stories in this book. Take hold, learn, and know that you are not alone.
The web search that led me to this book also led me to the National Well Spouse Foundation, which has a local chapter in my area. I will attend my first meeting next month. Unfortunately, the MS Society here does not have a support group for care givers.
Although I rated the book with five stars, I don't really love it. How can anyone love the intimacies of chronic illness? However, the writing is poignant, honest, and necessary -- not only for people facing these situations, but also for the people around them who don't.
My story to add: In addition to dealing with a husband with MS who slipped dramatically in the last year, I also have a teenage son with ADHD, and a daughter who's, well, normal? We have no family in this part of the country and I've had to learn to be very assertive and self-reliant. I could be one of the characters in this book. Maybe, some day, I will be.

Last year I lived in a small Korean town that had many followers of an ultra-authority.
My flatmate, friends, students and work colleagues were members.
I found Beth's book particularly useful because it examined in great detail the ways ultra-authority groups take over a person's life.
Reading the account of tactics of Jim Jones brought back some memories of my own that I had almost forgotten. Seemingly innocent events that could well have led to the group getting a toe hold on me. Presents, compliments and invitations given...all nice stuff, until you realize the people offering are followers of a man who claims to be God, praises Hitler, is wanted by Interpol charged with rape, and understands that his followers may wish to "die early" in order to claim their "heavenly reward".
The Global Association of Culture & Peace (GACP), do a google search, you'll probably find a branch at a university near you.
I wish I had read this book years ago. I would have realized in seconds instead of months that my roomate's Church was really no such thing. I could have saved her lots of stress and grief. I guess with books like these, you don't think of reading them until you notice something wrong. It's not the kind of book you read at school, but it should be.
I would like to personally thank Beth for providing me with much deeper insights into how ultra-authorities operate and flourish. And more importantly, information that I can use to help some good friends return to a life that is their own.
Beth should really be applauded for her intelligence, compassion and commitment.
I also found the examination of Hitler fascinating. I'd love for Beth to one day examine Kim Jung Il, North Korea's Dear Leader.

Debi graphically relates alarming stories of her mother's tirades and the consequence of the beatings that followed. She describes the feelings of mistrust, insecurity, worthlessness, inadequacy and the pain of loneliness.
Debi's early life and personal dysfunction was the result of the effects of abuse, parental rejection, the damage of being berated, the emotional scars of continuous isolation, and of the failure of her parents as caregivers to provide needed food and clothing.
Along the way several foster families, caring teachers, and co-workers helped Debi learn to trust, to reach out in love, and to understand the message of Jesus, his forgiveness, unconditional love, and hope. This is a story of rejection, redemption, and renewal.
Today abuse is being accepted as a major social problem, and is recognized as the cause of scores of people's suffering and the personal problems they encounter. Authorities are now facing up to the prevalence and significance of child abuse, physical, sexual, and emotional, and of the potential long term psychological and mental behavioral issues that stem from these abusive experiences.
It is Debi's concern that through the telling of her personal story the hurt of those dealing with the memory and pain of abuse will be eased. It is also her prayer that the book will minister to those looking to understand what children suffering from abuse have experienced.
"Oops! Wrong Family" is disturbing, haunting, and memorable. The book is a testimony of survival and of emotional pain healed through God's redemptive love and salvation. It communicates an important message, and is a rewarding read. Highly recommended.
