This book scared the heck out of me. Lavonne is one brave woman, and the things she endured makes me shudder. I read it in one day, I just could not put this one down.

This is a real eye-opener. Who would think it could possibly happen to the same person twice. Should be requred reading for every woman. It certainly says a lot for her that she could find it in her heart to forgive. What is the title of the movie? I don't think one was made, but should have been.

I have to say that I didn't expect anything less from my professor. Great Cuyamaca Community College teacher.

Though written for the victims of stalkers, this book is a boon for the professional counselor who wants to help those whose lives have been devastated by stalking. Emily Spence-Diehl writes extensively of the physical and emotional needs of stalking victims and, in providing guidelines for victims, also provides external, objective facts for the counselor dealing with an exhausted, confused, and traumatized victim. Most valuable are extensive checklists as well as toll-free numbers and Internet sources for assistance and further information.

I was stalked by an ex-husband....this book helped me understand I was not just "imagining things" about his behavior (the stalking behavior described in this book mirrored my stalker's behavior at about 90%). Also, the book helped me understand some very, very important ways to avoid escalating the problem. The book describes all the "ploys" stalkers use to keep interacting with their victims. They play on our guilt, sympathy, fear, anything they can get. I found the book concise and to the point, easily understood, with intelligent advice. I would recommend it for anyone who finds themselves the target of obsessive behavior.

I bought this book when my mother was in the late stages of the disease, but I wish I had owned it earlier when I was learning about the symptoms and how to deal with behavioral changes. The author explains how to adapt the environment and activities not only so that the person can enjoy life to the fullest, but also to enhance relationships with loved ones. We all want to be able to do something - not just stand by helpless - and the author provides some simple things that all of us can do for our family member. Readers will enjoy getting to know Smith's quirky mother and this personal element adds warmth and readability to what is otherwise, a difficult but very necessary subject.

Stolen Beauty: Healing the Scars of Child Abuse is the true-life memoir of Amy Madden, a survivor of childhood sexual abuse inflicted on her by her stepfather. Growing up with the shame, hurt, and vulnerability, feeling that the abuse she suffered was her fault, she retreated into a depressed, mistrustful state of despair. The road to recovery was a long and involved process of therapy, study, prayer, and developing strong faith in her own inner strength and spirit - the qualities she once possessed as a child so long ago. An invaluable testimony especially recommended as the experience of a kindred spirit for anyone seeking understanding during their own long journey to recovery from the trauma of abuse.

Beautiful, inspiring and a must read!

I devoured this book in less than two days! It's beautifully written and inspiring for anyone who has suffered abuse or is still suffering today from abuse. Madden offers insight to the horrors of abuse but most of all, how to heal from such experiences. Her reflections on healing and forgiveness are astounding and a highlight of this hard-to-put-down tearjerker. She brings home the point that having faith in yourself and learning how to love yourself is a key element in the forgiveness process. This is a must read for anyone who wants to heal from the bad experiences they may have gone through as a child.

Absolutely wonderful! Prince Michael takes you into the breathtakingly beautiful, and absolutely terrifying world of slavery and living ones life in a Harem. I was completely captivated from first page to last as he told Aimee's story. I laughed, and cried as the story sweeps you through her life in the Harem, and her ability to persevere against enemies, loss, terror and her ultimate rise to power. I would highly reccomend this book!

This book was well-written and well researched. The author knows the world of the Harem and different steps to become the power behind the throne (The Valide Sultan). He begins with Aimee's life in Martinique and her school days in France. Then there is the trip home, when she is shipwrecked and captured. Then taken as a gift to the Sultan. Her training, being given a new name (Nakshidil) all ring true. Wonderful book!

Turning tragedy into Reality

Review Date: 2000-04-01
The book assisted me to recognize the various stages of grief and the importance of working through the various processes necessary.

I enjoyed the simple terms and the easy to understand real life examples displayed throughout the manuscript.

My first impression was non-belief that a book like this was needed since I thought that professionals understood this process of traumatic grief. After reading the book I realized the lack of knowledge by most mental health professionals was staggering. The majority of these professionals truly do not understand the grieving process of traumatic death.

I am thrilled that this work has been completed and would encourage ALL professionals including law enforcment and legal support staffs to read and use this materials in their daily work.

Anyone who has suffered such a loss is not able to recognize the quality of the professional that they seek out in such horrible times. It is unfair to represent ALL mental health professionals as qualified to deal with such tragedies.

More and more today with the increase of sudden violent attacks and murders this material should be used as a "TEXT BOOK" for the field of mental health. I strongly recommend use of this material.

High Maintenance Child Alert

Everyone interacts with families. Every family has secrets. Sometimes, a high maintenance, self-destructive, low self-esteem child is one of them. Parents who have children like this often move into denial to survive, calling the behavior a phase, teen trauma, and/or peer influence.

Greta Eichel's family has an abundance of secrets that get more deliciously intriguing by the page. Yes, "Surviving Ellen" is a page turner that catches you.

Most importantly, this book is a book about love, mainly about the relationships of people who love someone who did not know how to love them back. The Socratic question for the reader to answer in this book is "do you know how to love the people you love in a way that feels loving to them?"

And, it is also a love story about two people, Greta and Stu, who knew how to love each other from the beginning and are still at it and going strong.

Like its title, this book is also about the strength to survive, whatever it takes, whenever it is necessary, however long it takes.

I believe this book could save many parents from having to survive their child's suicide.

Even those who have near-perfect children may benefit from it to help grandchildren or step-family members.

This book about the trials and tribulations of three generations of an American family combines the human comedy of growing up with fallible parents and a much more fallible brother to the human tragedy of losing a grown-up daughter. The author's resilience in the face of minor and major challenges is a testament to the power of humor for maintaining mental health.

After reading Target--Special Victims of the Holocaust, I was surprised to learn that the Ashkenazics were descendents of Noah's son Japhet and not Shem. Japhet seven great grandchild, Khazar, whose descendents were converts to Judaism established a powerful country in Eastern Europe known as Khazaria between the 7th-11th A.D. The book discusses the Jews involvement in Khazaria. In addition, the book gives a concise and very interesting history of the two branches of Judaism--Sephardics and Ashkenazics. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in European history or has an interest in Jewish culture.

Even though we seem to have come a long way in 55 years with Spousal abuse, child abuse and elderly abuse, we still have a long way to go. She was so afraid most of her life, how sad and she had absolutely no one to turn to, for even conversation. God was her only refuge, what of those who feel just as lost and don't believe in God, that is even more sad. Even though it was a tear jerker, I could not put it down until I finished it and I know several who have read it in this area and close to her hometown who gave it nothing but praise. Loved the cover also. The Oak tree she hid in. How Cool!

Thank God for What You Have Today!

I could not put this book down until I was finished with it. Alma Stenger talked about her life growing up in an abusive family. Most of the time one thinks of only the mother or father being the abuser, but in this case it was everyone around her. One would think that the siblings would come together for protection, but instead they were selfish. Another nice attribute to this book is how the author would tell about events in her current life and tie them into the past. It is a cruel world we live in and this book shows how one woman survived abuse from her alcoholic father, alcoholic husband, and sober sisters. I would recommend this book to anyone whether they have been abused or not because it is a real eye opener. God was her only strength and protector through this whole ordeal. There is a list of toll free numbers people can call for help with abuse in the back of the book.
