I have recently lost one of the people I loved most in this world. This book shows you just how to keep your eye on God and his faithfulness. God never leaves us. He cries when we cry. And He holds us when no one is there to hold you. He answers our prayers, but denies some of our requests because He has a better plan. You must trust Him in all things.

Finding God's Path Through Your Trials by Elizabeth George is not an easy book to read. George asks the reader to take the words of James "count your trials as joys" to heart, and that's a tough one. It's far easier to complain about our troubles and look for a way out from them. But George explains through Scripture that God brings each trial into our life for a specific reason. There is something to learn, something to be gained from it. There are many ways we try to get out of these trials, but unless we embrace them, we will have to experience them again and again until the lesson is learned. Suffering from the chronic pain of rheumatoid arthritis, this book came just at the right time in my life, and it spoke to my heart. Looking for the joy in this trial, I've found several lessons I've been taught and blessings that have come from it. George writes in a conversational manner that's easy to read and incredibly thoughtful. I can tell that she prayed over her words before she shared them. Going through a difficult time in your life? This book will help you find the joy in it, even if that seems impossible.

This is a real life story. The first review mentions that the book is a novel. I am not sure if that is a different use of the word, "novel"? The book is not fiction.
We reviewed this book in manuscript form and were real excited about its use especially in the case where a wife has gotten into an emotional or physical affair, and her heart has grown cold and bitter toward her husband.
This book will also encourage men to be loving and kind husbands, though we recommend that a wife black out certain parts of the book that are sexually explicit. The authors have awesome hearts that want to bring a blessing to couples in much the same way that we have encouraged couples. Buy this book and you will not be disappointed. Men, read it after your wife edits it!

It is amazing what God has done in this couple's life. This is a gripping and moving story that you just can't put down. It is a well written novel that also contains many Christian truths without being your typical "How to Christian Marriage book". A really good read for any one wanting to enjoy a truly wonderful love story or for any one struggling with their own troubles within marriage. It is simply an amazing book.

As an author and former owner of 6 Christian bookstores for 20 years I have read many books. Connie Cenac's book From Trials to Triumph is certainly at the top. It's not only informative, but life changing. She is brutally honest and transparent in revealing her heart amidst her trials. But watching God show up because of her relentless faith in Him, will blow you away! God will be bigger than ever after reading this comfortable read. It's like she's sharing these incredable stories in you living room, its just that your back won't hit the back of the chair, clinging to every word! Thanks Connie for the challenge of desiring..."Great Faith" in a "Big God"!

With "From Trials To Triumph," Connie Cenac has emerged as a fresh voice for dealing with the pains of life, whether caused by others or ourselves. Most authors are not as open about their own foibles and the way others have injured them as Cenac is. At first, her candor is a bit startling--but soon I realized that she could not help others without being completely truthful about how she brought herself out of trouble and into a life that basks in the love of Christ. Cenac addresses the mistakes and sins that can either tear us down or grow us closer to God, as we realize how much we need Him, how far we fall from His glory, and how sufficient His grace is to restore us and make us better people. I highly recommend this book, for its honesty and the many practical suggestions Cenac offers to help us do just what the title says.

This reference book tells you everything that you wanted to know about trials, but were afraid to ask. It is an excellent reference work for law students or inexperienced trial lawyers who want to grasp the fundamentals of trial techniques, so as to at least look and sound as if they know what they are doing. It is a comprehensive work that covers methodology, as well as trial strategy.
The book gives the reader instructive examples on ways of accomplishing a specific task, which, while not dispositive, are invaluable to the inexperienced. It gives the novice a starting point from which one may develop his or her own particular style. The book offers basic trial techniques without which no novice trial lawyer should be. It is your basic primer on trial work with the emphasis on jury trials. It is well organized and easy to follow. If you only have room for one trial techniques book on your shelf, this should be the one.

There is not really anything anyone can say about Trial Techniques, other than it is the Trial Bible for all up and coming litigators (and even many current litigators). A staple of America's law school classes, Trial Techniques is wonderful guide to not only give order, but an advantageous edge, to one's trial preparatons. Professor Mauet puts forth useful information in an easy to use format. Not only is he a great writer, but a wonderful lecturer on his techniques. If you have any use for attempting to organize a trial, or if you are a student of the law, this book is for you.

Advances in the theory of repeated significance testing in the 1980s and 1990s has made sequential methods practical by identifying stopping rules for data collected sequentially but in groups. This material is now used to plan interim analyses and both safety and efficacy group sequential trials for clinical trials. This text provides for the first time thorough coverage of these advances with suitable references to the literature.
It should be on the bookshelf of any biostatistician who conducts clinical trials for pharmaceutical or medical device companies.

Theo Wilson covered the great trials in this country from the 50's through the 80's. She spent 10 years preparing this book. Sadly, she died just as the promotional tour was scheduled to begin with an appearance on Tom Snyder's show.
Theo's voice, a delight to her many friends, comes through loud and clear. It's hard to decide which is more enjoyable, the many funny annecdotes or the numerous pithy and insightful comments on some of the most famous trials in our lifetimes.
Theo was maybe 5 feet tall, but she was a giant as a writer. She lit up every room she was ever in. She also didn't take any guff. While covering Charlie Manson's trial, he tried to intimidate her during a recess in the trial. She said "Oh, Charlie. Grow up!"
You owe it to yourself to get this book. Ignore the hard-to-get warning. I saw the publisher yesterday (4-20-97) at the LA Times Festival of Books, and they still have plenty of them. Look for Linda Deutsch, Theo's best friend, on the Today show next week. Linda has decided to complete the promotional tour for the book since Theo is unable to. Linda is the AP's premier court reporter. You'll recognize her from the O.J. trial where she was the only journalist not to get kicked out by Judge Ito.
A great read. Great writing, great stories, & funny, too!

Theo Wilson was the best reporter of her time, and this book gives her insight into major stories she covered: Jack Ruby, Charles Manson, Patty Hearst and many others. Wilson has a way of making you feel you are right next to her in the courtroom, noticing the details that make a story come alive. When heiress Hearst was on trial, for example, Wilson noted that her millionaire parents sat close to the defense table, but "there never was, during those long weeks, a spontaneous gesture of affection, a hug, a kiss, a hand reached for...They were living through the same nightmare but they could not share its terrors." Theo Wilson was known as the dean of reporters over a 40-year period, most of them for the New York Daily News. Journalists are not held in high regard today, but this book shows how honorable and responsible reporters can be. At the same time, she brings into view the reporter's world while the story is being chased and after the deadlines met. Theo Wilson had many adventures -- some funny, some poignant-- during her career. Reading about them is just plain fun

James Scott Bell, a very accomplished author, meets with success again in this continuation of the life of Kit Shannon. This spunky lady lawyer exhibits "likability" right off the bat. A very entertaining story that drew me into its pages from the first chapter to the suprising climax, right on through to the delightful ending! You will not be disappointed if you like to read dramatic, mystery books. A little bit of all elements that make a good mystery book are found here. Alas, no swear words, thankfully, so that makes it a GREAT book, in my thoughts! Can't wait for the next one in the series!

When I read this book I felt a certain nostalgia, because the "Howl" obscenity trial took place fifty years ago when I was a kid, and the Beatnik writers, of whom Ginsberg became the most famous, seem so rarified to me now. It's as though they had been filmed in black and white and the movies now jump and rattle as we watch them, the images scratched, browned and antiquarian. Also, it gave me considerable pleasure to know that the government censorship that the "not guilty" judgment in that trial abolished had remained abolished ever since.
In October, 2007, however, I learned that this is not true.
For the fiftieth anniversary of the trial, Pacifica Radio, the organization made up of the community-supported radio stations KPFA, KPFK, WBAI and others, considered the possibility of broadcasting a reading of the poem "Howl". It happens that, besides being the object of a landmark First Amendment freedom of speech judgment in a court of law, "Howl" is one of the truly remarkable poems of the twentieth century. So a commemoration of it seemed altogether laudable. But because of feared Federal Communications Commission rules on what constitutes obscene or unacceptable speech on the public airwaves, Pacifica determined not to do the broadcast on its stations. They worry that if the FCC fines them for broadcasting unacceptable speech, they will have to involve themselves in a freedom of speech trial, the costs of which could bankrupt Pacifica and put the stations out of business.
So the problem is subtler now than it was in 1957. You don't have to wait for actual censorship itself. The very fear that it will come causes organizations to muzzle themselves now. Perhaps you'd win in a trial. But you don't test the waters willy-nilly because you'll drown in the attorney fees that will result, no matter the judgment in court.
Luckily, though, we have the internet. The rules regarding broadcasting do not pertain to webcasts, and Pacifica has posted a reading of "Howl" by Ginsberg himself on their site (http://www.audioport.org/audioport_files/specials/Howl-Final-128.mp3) as part of a longer program in which a very illuminating discussion of the history of the poem's publication, the 1957 trial and the importance of the poem as literature can also be found. Besides the poem itself, the highlight of the program is a conversation with Lawrence Ferlinghetti, now eighty-eight years old, the San Francisco poet and bookseller who originally published "Howl."
The First Amendment right guaranteeing free speech is the issue here, even though it's being obscured by the FCC's self-important view of what constitutes "acceptable" speech. But even though the situation highlights the true dunderheaded silliness of the FCC's point of view, all is not bad, because the censorship of an artistic event by the government usually results in unruly fame for that event.
Poetry is not much read in the United States, and without the 1957 trial, "Howl" would probably have remained an important work by an obscure poet, read only by students in the academy and the struggling few who actually write poetry themselves. But because of the trial, Howl, And Other Poems has now sold almost a million copies, and continues to sell briskly. Happily, it is such a fine poem, so terrifying a view of contemporary society, and one so beautifully written that it is my opinion that few who read it will be unaffected by it.
Ginsberg was culturally prescient as well. In the second section of the poem, a long accusation of American industrial/government rapaciousness, he uses the figure of Moloch as a symbol of corporate indifference to the individual.
"Moloch whose mind is pure machinery! Moloch whose
blood is running money! Moloch whose fingers are ten armies! Moloch whose breast is a cannibal dynamo! Moloch whose ear is a smoking tomb!"
The biblical Moloch was one of the princes of Hell. A terrifying demon, he is described by Milton in Paradise Lost as "besmeared with blood/Of human sacrifice, and parents' tears," a fearsome devil who eats the children of the faithful. Ginsberg's Moloch is the self-serving corporate entity who, for money, foments armed conflict. A more accurate metaphor for the current war footing of the United States cannot be found.
Perhaps the muffling of "Howl" in 2007 will bring about the same firestorm of wild enthusiasm on the part of a general public that the 1957 trial caused. As was the case as described in this fine book by Nancy. J Peters and Bill Morgan, this would be a humorous and good thing, and it may just happen. One hopes that imaginative minds will prevail against the FCC watchdogs of your public morals, in the way that Judge Clayton W. Horn prevailed, who officiated at the 1957 "Howl" obscenity trial. He wrote in his opinion, "Would there be any freedom of press or speech if one must reduce his vocabulary to vapid innocuous euphemism?"
The answer, of course, is no.
Howl and Other Poems (Pocket Poets)

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the publication of Allen Ginsberg's "Howl and Other Poems", Howl on Trial: The Battle for Free Expression presents the inside story of editing, publishing, and defending the poem Howl in the context of censorship of literary works, and the 1957 obscenity trial in San Francisco that supposedly represented "the people" versus City Lights, the bookshop that published and sold "Howl and Other Poems." Howl on Trial includes correspondence between Allen Ginsberg and numerous others concerning the poem and efforts to censor it; a selection of newspaper reportage, magazine essays, cartoons, photographs, and letters to the editor that reveal the cultural climate of the mid-1950s; excerpts from the trial transcript; ACLU defense counsel Albert Bendich's reflections on the Howl case; and much more. A fascinating examination of the battle for free speech in microcosm, offering insights into the ongoing struggle for the right to express ideas without fear or harassment.
