I agree with the other early reviewers. There are many books on marketing law firms, strategy, etc. But Wesemann's book is compact, practical, and memorable. Ton of common sense, applied with savvy. Like any business strategy book ever written, some pages seem a little obvious (enter an emerging industry, both risk is high [industry may fizzle] and reward is high [catch the swell]). Then he describes an attorney who joined a hospital board, was puzzled by the medical problems, and quickly replaced his $300/hr billing with a national-profile and essentially unique $15K/day hospital ethics practice. That's catching a wave, indeed. The book is a great bargain and worth the reading; it's not long (100 pp).

This is a great topic and a great read!

While I thoroughly enjoyed Wesemann's earlier book on Management Myths, this is a fabulous. It is curious that no other publication (that I'm aware of) in the professional service sector has explored the topic of competitive dominance. This is a unique topic and extremely well presented.

Ed Wesemann is one of my partners in Edge International, so I guess you may well think I am biased. But having recently reviewed a copy, I am delighted to recommend the book.
Ed needs no stars from me, but I truly feel he deserves five of them.
Ed is - as the headline suggests - straight forward. He tells you exactly what he thinks in plain language. His expertise as a law firm manager and consultant is a remarkable source for some very clever ideas and very wise recommendations. His experience on law firm strategic and growth issues is almost certainly second to none. He demonstrates these characterstics again in this, his second major book on law firm management.
When Ed says with Peter Drucker "If you cannot dominate your market, get out of it", most firms may disagree. Experience and history are on their side, though. And one of the best first steps law firm managers can take is to mine the book for its practical advice on how to become dominant in a legal market. And there is much to be found.

Haunting journey into my own mirror

As I read this book, I could not stop turning the pages. I read the first 120 pages without getting up. I already knew the end of the story, but I had to read the remarkable journey. This lady opened herself up for such an honest portrayal of the most hideous events of her life to share them publicly and it is truly amazing. Know this, Patty, and Bill for writing it, if for nothing else, I am a life that was touched.

My mirror holds much the same story, and the same deals are offered to me. Everything within me says "stand by the truth" - but the truth is so hard when it hurts you. You have given me renewed courage to fight the fight. I will not give in and I will continue to tell the truth. The system has got acknowledge when it's wrong. Thank you both so much.

A Horror Story

Review Date: 2006-10-20
I sat in stunned silence as I turned the final page of "Cry Rape," Bill Lueders' heart-rending story of a rape victim doubted, and ultimately tormented, by police. My 10-year-old son asked about what I had been reading, saying, "Is it a mystery?"

I replied, "No, it's about a lady who was hurt badly in a crime and told the police. Not only did the police refuse to find the person who hurt her, they accused her of lying. Eventually they found the criminal who hurt her but even then, the police didn't help her."

His response: "Oh, so it's a horror story."

It is the most fitting summary I've yet seen of this tremendous book. Lueders' story unfolds chronologically from the first page, which begins with the shock and terror of a brutal rape. It leads to eventual vindication, but not without further terror and further brutality -- at the hands of police, attorneys and others the victim trusted most.

This book must be read not for how it is written though Lueders' dramatic-documentary style makes the story impossible to forget. It must be read because it shows us how our most vulnerable citizens can be further victimized by the very systems designed to help them. In short, it is a morality tale that highlights the immorality of the institutions many of us trust.

The Madison Idea
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2006-09-20
Cry Rape is the story of a rape victim's victimization by the criminal justice system. It is a story about a cop who seems predisposed to "prove" rape victims liars, about a police department that protects bad cops, about a district attorney's office willing to further victimize the victim to protect bad cops, about judges willing to interpret the law in ways that protect bad cops and bad policies, about elected and appointed officials who stand behind the victimization, and (though only peripherally) newspaper editors who don't seem to care.

It is also the story of one woman's heroic and uphill fight against the system and the small group of people who believed and supported her and were sometimes victimized as a result.

Conversations in Cry Rape, suggest that the majority of rape victims choose to walk away and admit defeat rather than standing up to a criminal justice system that is more interested in closing their file than helping them find justice. This victim's inner strength makes her story the exception.

This story takes place in Madison, Wisconsin, long perceived to be a bastion of progressive ideas. But Cry Rape exposes the plain fact that Madison's government can be as self-serving and self-protective as governments anywhere. The central story is the rape victim's years-long ordeal; but the strong secondary story is the way the system deals with a cop who shouldn't be a cop. He is rewarded and remains today an honored officer.

In spite of the ugliness exposed in Cry Rape, it does offer us a spark of hope. It shows that investigative journalism can make a positive difference and that there are some reporters and editors willing to stick with a difficult story. We learn that there actually are honest attorneys who seek justice for their clients instead of just clocking billing hours.

Readers unconnected to Madison or Wisconsin will be entertained by Cry Rape's distinct detective novel feel and the twists and turns that lead to surprising discoveries throughout the story. Alert, informed readers might find similarities between the way Madison's city government and the University of Wisconsin, Madison deal with liars and bad apples. Promoting such people seems to be the Madison Idea.

Boy oh boy, Pam Smart can tell one lie, back it up with another, and not miss a beat or blink an eye...but such is common for those who have no conscience.

This book can serve as a cautionary tale in many respects: A) there are reasons laws are in place to prevent incidences of statutory rape, no sex between "adults" and children, and no sex between educators and pupils...B) if you are so unhappy in your marriage, for the love of God, please leave rather than take an innocent life!!! No amount of insurance money will wash that spot off of your hands, lady McPamBeth.

It sickens me that Gregg Smart was robbed of his chance to have actual happiness, to have the kids he dreamed of having, to even experience another beautiful sunset or holiday with his family...yet Pam is on televison constantly...wanting to "expose the truth" to the story. Oh well, at least she is doing the broadcasts from prison and not in the free world.

I will say this, she is quite humorous in that she constantly contradicts herself and DOES NOT EVEN REALIZE IT. reach wayyy into that cluebag, Pam, and don't hit your head on the bottom. Me thinks she doth protest too much...

I couldn't put the book down. Ken Englade never disappoints me.

Pam Wojas was a rock groupie who refused to grow up and enter adulthood when her (late) husband Gregg did. She was hanging around with high school kids and going places with them socially. She's having an affair with a 15 year old kid!

Justice was done. Only "Pame" and her small circle of followers believe the lies she continues to tell about that night in 1990 when an innocent man was killed for no other reason than the spoiled brat he married was tired of him.

Ralph Compton does a very nice job telling the stories of the old cattle drives. I have read them all. It is tough to keep writing again and again using the same plot. This is compton's 14th. trail dr. book and there are 3 more as I count. All of these drives are inner twined with violant grudges, stampeds, rustlers and all the other unforseen haps. Buy them all, and buy all of the Compton stories written by Robert Vaughan, some of which are The Dakota Trail, The Alamosa Trail, and The Bozman Trail. There are other Compton books by Robrt Vaughan to and they are all excellant.

This rendition of the old west, the "cowboy life", and the genre of the era is well defined in this novel. This is the first book that I have read by Ralph Compton and I cannot wait to start from the beginning of the Trail Series. After reading this, I only wish there was still a time and place where ranchers, cowboys, and trail riding were of common place. It makes you wish you were a part of it.

this is a master work that is very important if we are to understand ourselves as well as the world in which we live. A fascinating read for the newcomer to such fiction, as well as the seasoned pro. A book to be enjoyed as much as it is to be studyed. Poetic, sad, and often very illuminating, "the devil in love" belongs to that league of literature that works on every level. Not to be ignored.

A tale of human foolishness and supernatural evil in the form of a beautiful love story. What a novel idea, especially for the eighteenth century. The devil is found in an obscure but fitting role in this surprisingly entertaining book. He has many faces; all deceiving and different; all equally wretched and evil. This book captures some of his essence. Excellent, and to be read again.

The story unfolds in luminous, poetic writing that is a total joy to read, and in the end leaves the reader fully satisfied, yet still longing for more. A book to be read again and again. Wonderful.

I purchased this book for my 11 year old daughter who has shown a great interest in science. She enjoyed it thoroughly. Blackwell's story is an inspiration to anyone and this book does an excellent job of telling it in a way that a child can fully appreciate. The book is fast-paced enough to keep a young reader's attention yet with enough detail to give them a full picture of the medical pioneer's life. The narrative is supported by a number of text boxes containing background information which truly round out the story. The overall result is that the reader leaves the book with a sense that they know not only about Blackwell but also about the context in which Blackwell made her achievements. I cannot recommend this book enough to anyone looking with a daughter interested in sciences and history.

This is an extraordinarily informative and gripping account of Elizabeth Blackwell's unlikely rise to prominence in the field of medicine in the 19th century. The portrayals of Dr. Blackwell and her contemporaries and friends--Stowe, Nightingale--are drawn with unusual vividness, as are the many and often seemingly insurmountable obstacles that beset Blackwell at every turn. I was amazed at how much ground Glimm covered, and all in a clear, well-organized and brisk-paced narrative. I am certain that girls and boys alike will find this account of Blackwell's heroic--really triumphant--life inspiring and delightful.

An excellently written biography for young people sets the life of Elizabeth Blackwell against its historical backdrop using photographs, engravings, and sidebars with nuggets of information that clarify the era. This first woman doctor's struggle to achieve her life's dream within that period of history so harsh and prejudicial to women and primitive in terms of medical teaching and practice is brought vividly to life by the informative illustration, accessible historical perspective, and visual design of the book. It should be very useful to help young students understand the history of both women and medicine in the 19th century.

My father was a close freind of the deceased in the book. He never met the author, but he knew the family. He was described in the book as building his own house (which is fictional, because he never built a house). This book is very graphic in how the bodies were found, and how the family was killed. Wharton makes up some of the names and of course some of the events in the book.

A year and a half ago I read the, then latest book, "Ever After," by my favorite author, William Wharton. The author of "Birdy," "Dad," and most recently, "Houseboat on the Seine," depicts the horrendous 23 car pile up on Oregon's Interstate 5 in the summer of '88, that occured due to field burning near Albany, Oregon. Seven deaths resulted out of overt negligence on the part of Oregon laws, businesses, political action committees and the farmer(s) involved. The author dealing with the personal impact of this tragedy, eventually decides to take action and attempts to pursue legal recourse. The book outlines the tremendous forces that come into play within our business/legal/political system(s) when it comes to assuming responsibility/liability for both the personal and ongoing environmental disasters that evolve out of negligence and irresponsibility. This book stirs even the apathetic into action

Actually, it's two books, Volume I and Volume II. But Professor John Myers' book EVIDENCE IN CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT CASES is the single most complete, current, and balanced resource there is for information on this very important topic. John Myers' work has been cited by over 150 courts nationwide, and with good reason. I have been working in the field of child abuse and neglect for many years and have used this book extensively. It's not a book that every lawyer or judge needs to have individually, although that would be great, but it is a book that every law office and court (criminal, juvenile, family) should have in its library. It gives citations to cases throughout the U.S., as well as to statutes. It reviews the literature and trends in this very area. And, of course, it gives the insights and assessments of Professor Myers on MANY areas of evidence that affect child abuse and neglect cases. This book is simply an invaluable resource for lawyers and judges working in the child abuse and neglect field, whether they be prosecutors, defense attorneys, children's attorneys, or judicial officers.

The Leopold and Loeb Tragedy

Review Date: 2007-12-17
As a young girl growing up in Chicago I remember watching Nathan Leopold on television when he was released from Statesville prison. I asked my Mother who he was and she told me he and another young man had killed a boy name Booby Frank. I became interested in the Crime of the Century and read the books Compulsion as well as Life plus 99 years and the Crime of the Century and now add this book to my collection. You can feel Chicago in 1924 and the hysteria that was to be the trial of two young men who held such promise that summer. The question why still haunts after all these years as does the human toll on the boys families..the Franks, The Leopolds and the Loebs. Babe on his way to Europe and the pride of his family with his intellect and potential for greatness. Dickie..handsome, charming, loved by all who meet him collide with Babe to do the unthinkable for what seemed to be just a thrill. Together they could do what as individuals they could not kidnap and kill a superior crime or so they thought. Darlings of the media who sought their every words and then gleefully waited for the hangman to put his noose around their necks. Enter Clarence Darrow the Old lion who surprises by pleading his clients guilty avoiding a jury trial and pleads for his young clients lives instead. The book covers the crime, the trial and the aftermath.. Babe and Dickie slowly adjusted to prison life and found redemption in the library and taught at the prison. Dickie killed in prison by James Day who was upset that his prison bank account could no longer be funded by the Loebs. Babe would continue the work they started until his parole many years later. Nathan Leopold is often used right or wrongly as an example that a prisoner no matter how heinous the crime can be rehabilitated. The sadness of all this is the greatness both Babe and Dickie might have given the world if not for a seemingly innocent ride in a roadster.

I have been aware of this heinous crime for several decades, but have never read a book about its specifics. Therefore, I am assuming this book is correct in its facts. It is certainly an interesting read. Two teen-agers, Richard Loeb and Nathan Leopold, decide they are intellectually superior to anyone else, and decide to test their theory by murdering a child at random. By the grace of God they lost track of the first boy they spotted coming home from school, and finally settled on 14 year old Bobby Franks. One of the two murderers was playing tennis with him the day before, not knowing that Bobby would be the victim. Clarence Darrow defended Leopold and Loeb by introducing "three wise men from the east" to cast doubt on the sanity of the defendants. Besides the victim you really have to feel for the parents of Bobby Franks. His mother remained in denial repeating that "Bobby will be home soon." Several photographs are included to supplement the text. This despicable crime took place in Chicago in 1924 during the Capone and O'Banion beer wars, and it reminds me of a similar twosome, Robert Tulloch and James Parker, of Chelsea, Vermont, who murdered two Dartmouth professors in 2001 in a thrill killing. Both partners in crime most likely wouldn't have committed the crime without the support of the other, and both believed their intellectual superiority would prevent them from being arrested. Both are very tragic stories. Considering I don't have any other book on Leopold and Loeb to compare it to I would highly recommend this book.

This is a good book...

What would make two wealthy, seemingly well-raised teenagers gleefully kidnap and murder another neighborhood boy? Each generation has asked this question during the eighty-three years since this event became the "crime of the century," and John Theodore has, to the extent possible, provided an answer in Evil Summer. Theodore begins with his own childhood recollection of becoming aware of the murder, then recreates the 1920s and the atmosphere of wealthy Hyde Park, Chicago, always depicting the humanness of the parents of both victim and perpetrators. The story is interesting throughout; I especially enjoyed the informative and eerie epilogue.

The true and tragic story of a mother's untimely death while shopping for cleaning supplies in a Wal-Mart (SAMS Club). The story is prefaced with wonderful background of life and family in rural Oklahoma. Imagine being a little girl so poor that you accompany your Father to buy chicken feed...so you can pick out the sacks...for your next dress. The family ties, loyalty to family, and love of family are refreshing in an age where families fall apart at an alarming rate. The heartless and callous behavior of Wal-Mart executives after the death is shocking (NOTE: Hitlary Clinton was on the Board of Directors). The court battle that develops is a true "David vs. Goliath" story as Wal-Mart's corporate attorney takes on the families life-long friend, a simple "country" attorney. The intensity and suspense of the court battle will keep you reading. Shame on Wal-Mart and SAM's club for focusing on corporate greed instead of customer safety. This book would make a good movie.

Judith Cain Dotson's first book is a smooth read. It is a journey from the tragedy of her mother's untimely death to a family's realization that while they cannot "bring back" their mother, their efforts to prevent this kind of tragedy from happening to others is one way to keep her memory alive. Ms. Dotson's courage to write about her mother's death and the events that followed makes for a "David and Goliath" tale that's a must read!

Heads up! It seems that preventable accidental death is cost effective where America shops. The sounds of forklifts and the sight of merchandise stacked hight are all ploys to give the shopper the illusion that they are getting a great deal. What the shopper doesn't realize and what Dolly Cain discovered is that the ambiance of a bargain warehouse is the prime objective--not the safety of the customer. An occasional incident is acceptable to the bottom line. Judith Cain Dotson, the Cain family cantadora, has put a face on one such 1985 incident. In Final Touch we have the pleasure of meeting Dolly Bryant Cain. Mrs. Cain was one of the outstanding memebers of what Tom Brokaw has labeled the Greatest Generation. Dolly was a loving wife, mother, artist, and poet. At the time of her death she had successfully battled cancer. In one of Mrs. Cain's poems she asks, "What would you think if in the morning/When you looked upon the clock--/If the time was moving backwards,/If yesterday were tomorrow, t'would be awkward." Turning yesterday into today is what Judith Dotson does as she takes us through her mother's life. In Final Touch we meet a joyous woman that supported her family while reciting poetry, a farm woman that was known to gift-wrap chicken feet, a woman that kenw how to find joy in the moment.

If Dolly Cain could turn back the hands of time, she would join her daughter and the readers of this book in demanding that the super discount stores take the forklifts out of their stores during business hours. According to Dotson, there have been, "Over 30,000 falling merchandise accidents from 1989-1997 in the Wal-Mart system." Final Touch is a must read for any American that shops in warehouse type stores.
