A Splendid Volume for Connoisseurs of Saul SteinbergReview Date: 2007-02-06
That being said, this catalog is one of the finest volumes of his work to date. It is a generously sized book at 10 x 12 inches, hardcover and 288 pages. It is printed on a matte coated paper which means the reproductions are excellent. The book is very well thought out. It begins with two illustrated essays. They are followed by the catalogue of the exhibition. This is followed by notes, chronologies and other information which illuminates Mr. Steinberg's career.
It is a very well designed book. The type choices and page formats make it quite easy to actually read. This is not always the case since the advent of computer composition. The catalogue section gives each work of art a two-page spread. The title, pictorial information and a brief commentary are on the left facing page and a reproduction is on the right facing page. The illustrations are large and accurate to the originals. For some art works there are extra illustrations below the commentary on the left facing page.
If you are intrigued about this artist, Saul Steinberg ILLUMINATIONS, is a must for your library. To round out your collection, consider purchasing STEINBERG AT THE NEW YORKER which was recently published and should still be available. If you are interested in seeing the actual exhibition, you should be able to find information online at the Saul Steinberg Foundation website.

A Must Read for GBS Patients/PCP/ICU NursesReview Date: 2008-03-27
This book should be required reading for all PCP and ICU nurses that are caring for GBS patients. I believe it would give them the compassion they need along with the knowledge, as to what to do for their patients and how to handle situations with their GBS patients that may/will come up.
I have to thank those involved in writing this book, for giving me the information which I had been looking for, in layman terms and was unable to find. And for giving me the ability to look forward, for now I know, it will get better in time, given time.
I know that there is still much I must overcome to gain as much of a recovery as I can, however now I have the tools to make it through.
A 'must' for any serious health library.Review Date: 2007-07-08

A good intro to the modern history of a diverse regionReview Date: 2005-03-08
This work is divided into five parts. The first part is entitled "The Eighteenth-Century World." In it, the authors describe the various forces affecting peasants, tribal peoples, village-life, etc. over the region as a whole before focusing on specific countries (many of which were colonies at the time.)
Part two, entitled "New Challenges to Old Authority" goes country/region by country/region and talks about the major changes coming to the region, much of which is brought by the European powers and the expansion of the role that they have had there for more than 200 years by that point. The section covers from 1750 to 1875.
Part three is entitled "Framework for Nations." This shortest section of the books looks at various forces, such as economic transformation, that are affecting the entire region.
Part four, "Social Change and the Emergence of Nationalism" basically covers the first few decades of the twentieth century prior to World War II. Effects of the newer, more direct, forms of colonial systems are discussed as well as the emergence of nationalism, first in the Philippines, throughout the region.
Part five contains an examination of the post-war history of the region, focusing on the themes of independence and social change.
This is a heavy work and dense at times, but that is to a point unavoidable due to the subject matter at hand. However, this is a must-have volume for anyone wishing to become familiar with the modern history as well as the peoples that make up one of the world's least discussed, but most vital regions.

A very accurate understandingReview Date: 2005-02-08
The title itself, "The Philippines: A Singular and Plural Place"
definitely describes how such diversity- the mountain people, the farm people, the city people, the elite, and the poor, the 1000+ dialects are actually one in the Philippines. The fact that there are 1000+ separate islands yet are all part of the Philppines physically brings together this same idea of many being one.
This is a definite must read for anyone trying to understand the culture, people and politics of the Philippines.
A Scholarly General Overview of the Political an d PersonalReview Date: 2000-06-04
The book is quite good and offers a lot of information to provide a fairly well-balanced view of the PI. Many would say it is too high-level, meaning, too general, but, for those that are wanting a peak into the political climate, as well as how the filipino has struggled to "become," then this book is definitely for you.
If you are looking for light reading, this book isn't for you. Anyone intersted in Filipino, Filipino tradition, marrying a Filipina/Filipino, this book will give you a much needed advantage to understanding the culture, by understanding its historical context and the struggle of becoming a unified nation.
I highly recommend it..

The True Hedda NussbaumReview Date: 2006-01-19
It is is so disingenuous for these armchair experts to twist/besmirch/malign/denegrate victims when they really have little or no knowledge as to the complexities surrounding many of these cases.
Having seen so many women be subjected, forced into battered wife syndrome situations, I have a far better understanding about what many of these unfortunate women go through; the physical, mental suffereing - scarring of their psyches - the worthlessness.
I'm so sick of listening to pseudo-intellectual feminists - along with their misogynist male counterparts all rush to judgement in attacking women who have fallen through the cracks of those empty almighty promises of equality and justice.
No-one is discounting/exonerating the viciousness and sheer evil perpetrated upon innocent Lisa; but to ignor or try and deny that what Hedda endure was in any way less than what Lisa was subjected to, is grossly unfair ... if not ignorant ...
Unfortunately, there are far too many out-dated/archaic/draconian laws on the books and worthless judges that still see/treat women as second class citizens - merely seen as expendable chattels.
And we thought that Megan's Law was going to be implemented and respected; where girls and their mothers would be prorected - safe-guarded against the barbaric violence that hapless men venge upon their weaker sexes ... beings ...
Or, is a victim not a victim, until those who wield the power decide it is such? Whatever happened to all the sensitivity training we hear so much abouI followed this trial (as I did the Aileen Wournos and Andrea Yates cases) in great detail.

Steinberg should've been sentenced to death/Nussbaum shouldReview Date: 2003-06-27
My heart aches terribly after reading this book. I'd hoped I'd feel differently. Because of all of the media and hype I was hoping there was some 'normal' explanation to this tragedy. Maybe a typical story of a battered woman who coulnd't respond.
BUT, this couple were sado-masochist, crack-heads who participated in cults and sexual perversity. I hoped I would read a simplier explanation of Lisa's death. This book didn't help my phyche at all; it made my pain worse.
I kiss my child much harder every night after she's asleep after reading this 'tale of hell'.
My prayers go on for Lisa.

Great Art, Weak WritingReview Date: 2005-07-17
What did he like to eat? Write more about his relationship with Abstract Expressionists. Aren't there any stories about him being funny or having funny experiences in his travels? More about his relationship with Hedda Sterne. Did he speak with an accent? Was he fussy or snobby? Would he have a conversation with the newspaper vendor on the street? Did he feud with anyone besides Tina Brown? More about other New Yorker cartoonists and their relationships.
The book lacks insight and a personal feel. It is shallow and superficial account of his life. If this book were a trip to Europe, it would be like a package deal with a strict itinerary.
Every morning, you get on the bus and travel to another city. All meals are timed with great food. It is over planned and comprehensive. All major sights are seen. As apposed to a trip with a friend, who shows you their favorite restaurant, the unknown museums. Renting a car and exploring the countryside in a spontaneous that is open to discovery.
The art is superior. An awesome selection that shows the breadth and facile charm that attracts me to Steinberg's work.

I particularly delight in his wide-ranging "cartoon" people - playing style against style, turning expectations inside out, displaying a strong commentary on modern America with his demented cowboys, high-fashion women, and multiple little stamped inspectors offering a silent commentary to the various goings-on.
