I confess - up to now, I had written off Saul Steinberg as "that New York poster guy." Then I got this book at the library, and what an eye-opener! This is an artist with an amazingly strong vision and message, often bitingly satirical, with incredible figures and dazzling compositions, working in a surprising range of materials (pencil, ink, watercolor, crayon, and rubber-stamping - often on the same piece).
I particularly delight in his wide-ranging "cartoon" people - playing style against style, turning expectations inside out, displaying a strong commentary on modern America with his demented cowboys, high-fashion women, and multiple little stamped inspectors offering a silent commentary to the various goings-on.

excellent!!!

First, I must confess that I am predisposed to enjoying this book. I love everything about the man and his work. Over the past several years I've acquired fourteen volumes of Steinberg's art as well as other printed pieces. Before the internet this would have been almost impossible and very costly. My earliest recollection of art I had strong feelings about goes back to the late 1940's when I saw a series of drawings by Saul Steinberg in The New Yorker.

That being said, this catalog is one of the finest volumes of his work to date. It is a generously sized book at 10 x 12 inches, hardcover and 288 pages. It is printed on a matte coated paper which means the reproductions are excellent. The book is very well thought out. It begins with two illustrated essays. They are followed by the catalogue of the exhibition. This is followed by notes, chronologies and other information which illuminates Mr. Steinberg's career.

It is a very well designed book. The type choices and page formats make it quite easy to actually read. This is not always the case since the advent of computer composition. The catalogue section gives each work of art a two-page spread. The title, pictorial information and a brief commentary are on the left facing page and a reproduction is on the right facing page. The illustrations are large and accurate to the originals. For some art works there are extra illustrations below the commentary on the left facing page.

If you are intrigued about this artist, Saul Steinberg ILLUMINATIONS, is a must for your library. To round out your collection, consider purchasing STEINBERG AT THE NEW YORKER which was recently published and should still be available. If you are interested in seeing the actual exhibition, you should be able to find information online at the Saul Steinberg Foundation website.

The marvelous Saul Steinberg exhibition at the Morgan Library in NYC is almost too much to take in even if one devotes an entire afternoon. Unlike some art exhibitions, Saul Steinberg's work is full of references and verbal ques that make ones brain fire on all cylinders simlutaneously. That can be exhilarating, but also exhausting. Saul Steinberg, the book, allows one to take in the artists's work in smaller bites: indeed, you can dip into the book at any page and be well fed. Don't miss the exhibition. But then, make sure you get the book.

A Must Read for GBS Patients/PCP/ICU Nurses
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-27
Until I was told I had GBS (Nov 2007), I had never heard of it. Once I read this book cover to cover, I gained an understanding of GBS, which I had been looking for and was unable to find in others. I felt as if someone had been following me around, writing down everything that happened the weeks before and the first two weeks I was in the hospital.

This book should be required reading for all PCP and ICU nurses that are caring for GBS patients. I believe it would give them the compassion they need along with the knowledge, as to what to do for their patients and how to handle situations with their GBS patients that may/will come up.

I have to thank those involved in writing this book, for giving me the information which I had been looking for, in layman terms and was unable to find. And for giving me the ability to look forward, for now I know, it will get better in time, given time.

I know that there is still much I must overcome to gain as much of a recovery as I can, however now I have the tools to make it through.

A 'must' for any serious health library.

Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a condition in which the body's immune system attacks part of the nervous system, resulting in symptoms ranging from tingling and weakness to paralysis. GUILLAIN-BARRE SYNDROME: FROM DIAGNOSIS TO RECOVERY is co-authored by a survivor of the condition and covers everything from early symptoms and treatment options to diagnostic methods and prognosis. From rehabilitation to acute care and coming home again, GUILLAIN-BARRE SYNDROME is a 'must' for any serious health library.

great start to learning about Southeast Asia

This is a wonderful introduction to the history of Southeast Asia, ranging from the early modern period of the region to the influence of colonialism on the society and culture of Southeast Asian countries. There is also good background information on the individual countries which comprise the area.

A good intro to the modern history of a diverse region

Wow! What a volume. As I mentioned in my review of a Cambridge History of the same region, ignorance of this region is simply not wise, and I would dare say not an option. In this day of terrorism and other geopolitical concerns, we remain ignorant of this region at our peril. This book will give the reader a good basic explanation of the ten countries (at the time this book was published) that make up this region.

This work is divided into five parts. The first part is entitled "The Eighteenth-Century World." In it, the authors describe the various forces affecting peasants, tribal peoples, village-life, etc. over the region as a whole before focusing on specific countries (many of which were colonies at the time.)

Part two, entitled "New Challenges to Old Authority" goes country/region by country/region and talks about the major changes coming to the region, much of which is brought by the European powers and the expansion of the role that they have had there for more than 200 years by that point. The section covers from 1750 to 1875.

Part three is entitled "Framework for Nations." This shortest section of the books looks at various forces, such as economic transformation, that are affecting the entire region.

Part four, "Social Change and the Emergence of Nationalism" basically covers the first few decades of the twentieth century prior to World War II. Effects of the newer, more direct, forms of colonial systems are discussed as well as the emergence of nationalism, first in the Philippines, throughout the region.

Part five contains an examination of the post-war history of the region, focusing on the themes of independence and social change.

This is a heavy work and dense at times, but that is to a point unavoidable due to the subject matter at hand. However, this is a must-have volume for anyone wishing to become familiar with the modern history as well as the peoples that make up one of the world's least discussed, but most vital regions.

From Arakan to Cebuano, from Tu Duc to Kartini

If you are interested in history, or perhaps if you just had to sit through history way back when, you probably heard about "no taxation without representation", Gettysburg, Disraeli, the Magna Carta, Charlemagne, Voltaire, and Cheops' Pyramid, to take a few out of the grab bag. Whether or not you've heard of similarly central and basic events or people in Southeast Asia is another question. Most people in English-speaking countries are a bit vague if asked about Arakan (a long independent kingdom now part of Burma or Myanmar) or Cebuano (one of the most important Philippine languages), Tu Duc (the last major emperor of Vietnam who died in 1883) or Kartini (a Javanese woman whose letters are a monument to modernization and change in Indonesia). I first used the 1973 edition of this book more than 30 years ago when I had to teach an introductory course on Southeast Asia. I found it an invaluable source of information, in an excellently organized format. The authors wisely did not try to cover two thousand years or more of history for the eleven countries-Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, East Timor, Brunei, and the Philippines-making up the region. They begin with an excellent picture of the 18th century world, including fishermen and rice farmers, religion, trade, local rulers and colonial rulers (at that time, only the Spanish in part of the Philippines). This section alone is worth the price of the book as a marvelous integrated history. The next section deals with the way each major society dealt with the impinging outside world, which arrived in the shape of colonial economic and political encroachments and ultimate control. Each colonial power adopted particular measures, producing differing reactions from the inevitable nationalist movements. Meanwhile Chinese and Indian businessmen, then Japanese military occupation added new elements to the historical mix. People who want up-to-date material must look for the later edition. My edition of IN SEARCH OF SOUTHEAST ASIA does not discuss much after 1960, leaving out the Second Indochina War, the economic transformation of Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia since then, the impact of oil in Indonesia, and the Cambodian genocide. But in any case, as an introduction to Southeast Asia, as a background work for the study of any one of the countries mentioned, this book would be hard to beat. It contains some excellent maps and detailed information on a myriad subjects. Its style is serious, but not unreadable. If you read the whole thing, you will know more about Southeast Asia than 99% of Westerners. And that's a shame.

A very accurate understanding

Review Date: 2005-02-08
I read this book for a class that I took during my undergraduate years at UCI and found it to be a very helpful book in understanding the history, culture and people of the Philippines. Being a Filipina-American myself, I could better understand where my parents came from in their way of thinking and understanding the world. My parents were born and raised in the Philippines and I was born and raised in the USA. We often clashed in our ways of thinking and beliefs because of the different environments we grew up in, and this book definitely helped me to understand why.

The title itself, "The Philippines: A Singular and Plural Place"
definitely describes how such diversity- the mountain people, the farm people, the city people, the elite, and the poor, the 1000+ dialects are actually one in the Philippines. The fact that there are 1000+ separate islands yet are all part of the Philppines physically brings together this same idea of many being one.

This is a definite must read for anyone trying to understand the culture, people and politics of the Philippines.

A Scholarly General Overview of the Political an d Personal

This book is definitely a scholarly level book that is aimed toward those taking a somewhat intellectual look at the "plight of the Filipino." The book is written very well, and seems to be fairly neutral when analysing the historical elements of how the Philippine Islands have progressed in the last couple centuries.

The book is quite good and offers a lot of information to provide a fairly well-balanced view of the PI. Many would say it is too high-level, meaning, too general, but, for those that are wanting a peak into the political climate, as well as how the filipino has struggled to "become," then this book is definitely for you.

If you are looking for light reading, this book isn't for you. Anyone intersted in Filipino, Filipino tradition, marrying a Filipina/Filipino, this book will give you a much needed advantage to understanding the culture, by understanding its historical context and the struggle of becoming a unified nation.

I highly recommend it..

I followed this trial (as I did the Aileen Wournos and Andrea Yates cases) in great detail.

It is is so disingenuous for these armchair experts to twist/besmirch/malign/denegrate victims when they really have little or no knowledge as to the complexities surrounding many of these cases.

Having seen so many women be subjected, forced into battered wife syndrome situations, I have a far better understanding about what many of these unfortunate women go through; the physical, mental suffereing - scarring of their psyches - the worthlessness.

I'm so sick of listening to pseudo-intellectual feminists - along with their misogynist male counterparts all rush to judgement in attacking women who have fallen through the cracks of those empty almighty promises of equality and justice.

No-one is discounting/exonerating the viciousness and sheer evil perpetrated upon innocent Lisa; but to ignor or try and deny that what Hedda endure was in any way less than what Lisa was subjected to, is grossly unfair ... if not ignorant ...

Unfortunately, there are far too many out-dated/archaic/draconian laws on the books and worthless judges that still see/treat women as second class citizens - merely seen as expendable chattels.

And we thought that Megan's Law was going to be implemented and respected; where girls and their mothers would be prorected - safe-guarded against the barbaric violence that hapless men venge upon their weaker sexes ... beings ...

Or, is a victim not a victim, until those who wield the power decide it is such? Whatever happened to all the sensitivity training we hear so much abouI followed this trial (as I did the Aileen Wournos and Andrea Yates cases) in great detail.

This book is excellent. The story behind it all is totally repulsing and I believe that Joel Steinberg AND Hedda Nussbaum should have been put behind bars for their lack of love that they gave to Mitchell and Lisa and the home that they raised their children in...I'm sure that homeless people raise their children in a more sanitary fashion.

be in prison for life (abused woman or not).

My heart aches terribly after reading this book. I'd hoped I'd feel differently. Because of all of the media and hype I was hoping there was some 'normal' explanation to this tragedy. Maybe a typical story of a battered woman who coulnd't respond.

BUT, this couple were sado-masochist, crack-heads who participated in cults and sexual perversity. I hoped I would read a simplier explanation of Lisa's death. This book didn't help my phyche at all; it made my pain worse.

I kiss my child much harder every night after she's asleep after reading this 'tale of hell'.

My prayers go on for Lisa.

I agree with the author that Hedda Nussbaum is just as guilty of Lisa's abuse and death as was Joel Steinberg. There are some facts about the birth mother that were incorrect (See her own book "I Wish You Didn't Know My Name" by Michele Laudners). Over all, "What Lisa Knew" is a good book. It gives insight to a very sick, disturbed man.

"Steinberg at The New Yorker" makes an important, even indispensable contribution to the understanding of Steinberg's work and life. Not since Harold Rosenberg's discriminating essays on Steinberg has there been such a good source of insight about his procedures and concepts. Ian Frazier's memoir fleshes out this otherwise mysterious character, Joel Smith's commentary offers brief but appropriate insights, the images themselves are wonderful, copious, superbly reproduced--many in full size. A monument to Steinberg and a key historical document at the same time.

Great Art, Weak Writing
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-17
This book was a disappointment to me. The writing is too removed from the subject. It has a strong chronological structure, however it is very impersonal. Most of the quotes seem to be pulled from interviews. I would prefer more information about Steinberg's life.

What did he like to eat? Write more about his relationship with Abstract Expressionists. Aren't there any stories about him being funny or having funny experiences in his travels? More about his relationship with Hedda Sterne. Did he speak with an accent? Was he fussy or snobby? Would he have a conversation with the newspaper vendor on the street? Did he feud with anyone besides Tina Brown? More about other New Yorker cartoonists and their relationships.

The book lacks insight and a personal feel. It is shallow and superficial account of his life. If this book were a trip to Europe, it would be like a package deal with a strict itinerary.
Every morning, you get on the bus and travel to another city. All meals are timed with great food. It is over planned and comprehensive. All major sights are seen. As apposed to a trip with a friend, who shows you their favorite restaurant, the unknown museums. Renting a car and exploring the countryside in a spontaneous that is open to discovery.

The art is superior. An awesome selection that shows the breadth and facile charm that attracts me to Steinberg's work.

A must have

Magnificent. Beautifully reproduced artwork of my favorite cartoonist/illustrator of all time. From pen and ink drawings you've never seen before to full-size New Yorker covers, this book is an amazing resource. I also like the fact that Steinberg's New Yorker covers are reproduced in miniature at the end, in chronological order. But this book is more than an art portfolio. Joel Smith's contributions, which range from the biographical to the curatorial, bring a new level of appreciation to Steinberg's work.
