Great blend of drama and reality.

Peter Goodchild's take on the events following the upheaval at the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago masterfully mixes real life interviews with dramatic re-enactments from the courtroom. The actors portray the 60's "hippies" with passion and reverence. The interviewing of historians and participants provides intriguing details into the events. Truly a great blend of drama and reality.

A quiet delight

Rumer Godden spins a complex and delicate tale of family, and time, and love. Past, present, and future weave around each other in layers of story centering on an old family home and the generations who live and hate and love there. I first read this story many years ago, and I still find many of Ms Godden's strong characters and unique turns of phrase vivid in my mind. I would recommend this book without hesitation - a re-readable joy.

An exploration of more than one hundred years of Chinese cinema and nation

Review Date: 2006-07-04
Chinese film studies experts Chris Berry and Mary Farquhar present China On Screen: Cinema And Nation, an exploration of more than one hundred years of Chinese cinema and nation. Revealing how movies from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the Chinese diaspora create different ideas of Chinese nation, whether empire, republic, or ethnically based, China On Screen touches on such issues as male and female star images, transnational production, the image of the "good foreigner" among others. A quite thought-provoking and extensively researched academic study.

A wonderful discovery

I recommend this one without reservation. I bought this audo CD thinking it was simply a reading of the Dickens Classic, but was delighted to discover that "Focus on Family Radio Theater" is much more. They have recreated the feel of radio theater without the crappy sound listeners had to endure in the 40s. It was an unexpectedly delightful experience.

-The musical score is original and heart-swelling. Fully orchestrated, subtle and professional, they should have won an award of some kind.

-The sound effects are believable without being overwhelming...you don't really notice them on the first hearing and have to listen closely to single them out from the story line....excellent in every way.

-The narrator is excellent and the actors are too. They somehow manage to convey their characters using only their voices at least as well as most actors do on the silver screen. You can almost feel the nausia and annoyance welling up in scrooge when his nephew showers him with good cheer. Special kudos to whoever played the "Ghost of Christmas Past". This is usually an insipid, unmemorable part, but this lady somehow lets you feel her contempt and pity and annoyance with Scrooge and still feel that she is comitted to changing his character...but has little hope that he will change. You must hear her performance to appreciate it. The whole cast is good and several of them I would rate as excellent.

The director, or whoever interpreted the dialog did an excellent job as well as whoever scripted it to make it work without visual effects or constant narration.

Parts of this performance made me laugh out loud and others brought a tear to my eye. This is simply the best rendition of Dickens I have ever enjoyed.

One of the best books on cinema

Although Deleuze mentions that this bookfs aim is to make a typology on cinema, for readers, it will be the object of thought more than that. In this book, Deleuze considers many films in which time is not subordinate to movement any longer (the time-image). His way of developing theory is like Bergsonfs one on time and memory, but his theory of time has variations that are reflected in various films and becomes a profound notion of the world with dynamic extension. Deleuze proposes us not only new concepts through films but also the question: What is the world? Deleuze creates a system on cinema as same as he analyzes clearly what is new and what is different from the past films in films of neo-realism or the new wave. While many people have mentioned to genres in films, Deleuzefs analysis of the border between the genres is one of the most precise.

If you had gCinema 1: The Movement-Imageh, this book would be more interesting for you because you could compare the two books. Moreover, this book treats so many films that you must find ones you have ever seen, which makes this book more fascinating.

There is no one like Brigitte Lacombe. . .

Brigitte Lacombe's book of photographs, taken throughout her life, of those people most of us will never know in our lives. . .is the most exquisite compilation of photographs ever transposed in one single books. There is no one who shoots a subject as Brigitte Lacombe does, and no one a subject trusts more. Is it book of celebrity photographs? Yes. But the celebrity is -- without question -- Brigitte Lacombe.

Well Read Civil War Stories of Ambrose Bierce

This book on tape is really moving. The stories come across very powerfully and bring home the emotional impact of the Civil War from the point of view of the soldiers and the civilians who were affected by the battles. Most memorable is the story of the child who gets lost behind the battle lines close to his farm. Listening to these stories makes them come alive more powerfully than simply reading the written words could possibly do. I highly recommend this book on tape.

This book holds what seems to be the first plays by soon to be revolutionary artists! These students explode into the art scene like none before them. Each play demonstates their talent in a new-age wave of teenage art. I recomend this book to anyone looking to produce something new and exciting. High schools and colleges would be hailed for staging these one act performances!

I am a 13 year old actress and I found this book helpful. The monologues are very different, so you could probably just use this one book for all your audition needs! This is one of those books that you just have to have on your shelves.

An efficient yet passionate and personal play.
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1997-09-02
Helen Edmundson writes with a rare clarity and drive, despite the fact that the subject on which she writes is muddy and contentious. She uses the marriage of two people, one Irish and one English, as a barometer for the political upheaval of Cromwell's conquest of Ireland. This concrete example, firmly rooted in context, brings a brilliance and richness to the play; both qualities are achieved with a spare and judicious use of language. A historical play which does not leave the issues relegated to history
