Memoir, But More Than Just Memoir
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-11
In Opa Nobody, Sonya Huber expands the territory of the memoir by engaging in speculation of the most fruitful kind about the family history that history itself conspired to make only partially available. The result is a memoir reminiscent of novels that incorporate similar strategies, among them Philip Roth's American Pastoral and William Styron's Sophie's Choice. Lofty company, this, but it is company Huber has earned. Opa Nobody is highly recommended.

This volume contains an Orderly Book, or military diary, relating to three battalions of Loyalists raised for the defense of Long Island and commanded by General Oliver De Lancey. It is followed by a valuable list of 1,500 New York Loyalists (the adherents to the British Crown in the city of New York), compiled from contemporary manuscripts and newspapers covering the period 1776-1784 and alphabetically arranged. It should be noted that all three battalions disbanded in Nova Scotia.

A Family History Goldmine
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-24
If you have ancestors who lived in Northern Ireland in the early 1800's, relevant volumes in this series are a must-read. This collection of field reports, written in the 1830's, will give real insight into how people worked and lived. Twenty to thirty pages on each parish provide enormous social and geographical detail, including lists of the most common surnames on each cemetery's gravestones. The series is most useful if you know the part of the Ulster county where your folks lived, but will be meaningful even if you can't pinpoint their location.

Meet heroes of modern history
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-16
Mary Ellen Johnson is the founder and executive director of the Orphan Train Herigage Society of America. She's also known as "the orphan train lady." This volume is an excellent outgrowth of her interest in the 75-year orphan train era in American history. It is filled with accounts of orphan train riders, written by riders themselves or their descendants. The stories illustrate the wide range of riders' experiences. Some were orphans. Some were abandoned. Other children who rode orphan trains had parents who could not support them and gave them up hoping they'd have better lives. Some accounts describe finding loving families, while others were overworked or suffered abuse. Orphan train riders overcame incredible odds and emerged as heroes of modern history. Read this book to learn more about them.

Provocative
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-21
This is an ambitious book that pushes the paradigm of anthropology beyond its more traditional study of a people's way of interpreting the world. Liu connects the epistemological project of culture to questions of ontology, and in so doing, explodes the possiblities of ethnology. He also neatly synthesizes a great deal of contemporary philosophical and anthropological thought in the process. For thinking readers.

A joyous tool for the avid or amateur genealogist
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 1999-06-18
Our Family's Genealogy was a labor of love by the author which spanned the last ten years of his life. An avid genealogist, Mr. Beimes thought the concept of an interactive guide from the dawn of time forward which allowed you to input your own family's genealogy opposite a rundown of all major births, deaths, and world events from that specific year would prove interesting and useful to genealogists of all levels. Judging by the rare nature of this book, he was correct.

Our Family's Genealogy is a wonderful tool for history buffs, genealogists, archivists, and those concerned with capturing their families place in history in respect to the rest of the World. It is well worth the search, and can form the basis of a recorded history of your family tree that will become a cherished memento.

Excellent genealogical resource
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-03
Our French Canadian Ancestors volume 3 has been an excellent resource series addition to my growing library. This volume covers the history of the church in early Canada/New France. It also included a history of the derivation of French/Canadian names, including 5 categories that many came from. It's always great to be able to find links to my family tree, along with biographical, geographical, social information about the times, occupations and location of my ancestors. Don't miss it.
