Great Resource for Genealogists

This book has a long history of being THE book to consult when researching the families of Marion County South Carolina. This book has been invaluable to my own research and to many others. Mr. Sellars was born in the early part of the 19th Century and lived until just after the turn of 20th Century. His knowledge of the area and it's people was phenomenal. Exhaustive lists of Civil War rosters are also included and would be a great help to anyone searching for clues about their Confederate ancestors from the area. This book is expensive but it's well worth the price.

Wonderful Genealogical Town History
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-16
This is fairly complete history of the Town of Milford as of 1901. There are 1023 pages in the book and it is about three inches thick.

It includes maps of the town, and photos and drawings of buildings and people.

The first 390 pages are descriptions of various historical aspects of the town, with the balance of the book being biographical sketches of the for famous inhabitants of the town, along with family registers that list the basic information about many more inhabitants.

This is a fabulous genealogical resource for anyone researching family members that lived in Milford, NH, especially during the 1800's.

George A. Ramsdell, the author of the book, was obviously a very diligent historian that put a huge abount of work into creating the book. It looks like he spent about 7 years on the project, doing very detailed research to get his facts accurate. It appears to be very complete and is extremely detailed.

An update and extension of the 1884 edition. Contains many individual family writeups plus historical sketches of townships and towns, all enriched with photographs of individuals, family groups, towns, churches and schools. Obviously cannot cover every family in Mitchell County, but does a reasonable job of covering quite a few, since it relies on personal writeups from family members and not all families may have responded to the invitation to submit a sketch. Lots of information of interest to any genealogy researcher.

I Found My Ancestors
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-15
I borrowed a copy of the book from a co-worker who turned out to be a cousin from about 5 or 6 generations back. This book is full of my ancestors. There are so many names in the book which I found I was related to. The Hudson River Valley is so rich in history. The book tells of the French and Dutch settlements around the area called New Paltz. It tells stories about many of the families and where they came from in Europe. There are a lot of facts about the people and their families. There is a genealogy section which lists the first settlers of the area and goes for a few generations listing the spouses, children, children's spouses, with birth, death, and marriage dates. I have ancestors in a few of these families. The main families in the book are Louis DuBois, Christian Deyo, Abraham Hasbrouck, Louis Bevier, Anthony Crispel, Hugo Frere and Simon LeFevre. The author of the book is a descendent of Simon LeFevre. The book tells how the immigrants came to this country, which wasn't even a country yet. It tells how they supported themselves, tells of the dealings with the Indians in the area. It tells about the houses. It tells about the churches and their importance in the development of this area. It tells how the French and the Dutch finally came together after living in separate communities. The index in the book is excellent. Every name mentioned in the book is in the index. It is an excellent research book for geneaology if you know that you have ancestors in the Hudson Valley of New York State. It is very interesting reading even if you aren't related to the people in the book. I haven't read the whole book. I have used it mainly for researching my family tree. I plan on buying my own copy because I want one of my own to refer to in the future.

An excellent study of pertinent facts relating to the early history of Newton County, Mississippi. A. J. Brown uses many sources to inform his reader, including verbal interviews of residents of Newton County, court records, federal census records, state records and newspaper accounts. This book is of interest to those who wish to learn more about early settlers of Newton County, and what life was like for citizens after the Civil War. It does not touch upon every family. The primary focus is on those the writer believes are the leading citizens, therefore, those seeking a comprehensive study of this area may be disappointed. However, this history does provide a general feel for the time and place with some detailed discussion.

History of Pike County gave me the history of the early settlement of Pike County Illinois. My ancestor Daniel Shinn was a part of the early settlement and I'm using the book to document family history. I read in the book that Daniel Shinn's picture is in volume two so I'll be ordering it soon.
