I have the original 1895 first edition of the book. The author covers all aspects of heraldry, including origin and development of heraldry, with many full color plates and illustrations of Colonial Armory, seals and crests. This is a must reference work to have.

Cemeteries, Black History, Culture & the Past Destroyed

The only lasting proof of our existence is our graves. Destroying the past is easy it seems. Just ignore it and it really does go away forever.
I find this book fascinating. Ms Davis writes with compassion, concern and I sense a bit of frustration in her attempts to document the past while searching for a solution. I purchased it because it pertained to the area I now call home but in reading it, I was made aware of a larger nationwide epidemic ---- the destruction of black cemeteries, the history they represent and the limited amount of documentation available.
Neglect and lack of interest is allowing these monuments to ancestors of the past to deteriorate and disappear at an alarming rate. Losing the physical evidence is sad enough but there is little or no documentation regarding who is buried there. When the markers disappear all the history is lost. Only Ms. Davis and a very few others seem to care. Even though this book was published only a few years ago, the situation has gotten worse. Who is going to stand up and help change it?
Richmond, Va is home to some notable blacks. Arthur Ashe is buried in Woodland cemetery. Woodland had nearly disappeared under an overgrowth of weeds, vines and trash. In 1993 the cemetery was cleaned up to avoid public embarrassment after it was announced that Mr Ashe was to be buried there. Maggie Walker, a woman of color & the 1st female U.S. bank president is buried at Evergreen cemetery. This cemetery has almost disappeared. Ms. Walker's grave remains visible only because someone or someones have assigned themselves the task of trying to hold back the forest.
Will the past be preserved or lost forever?

This book is a true treasure for those researching their family history and wanting to know about the history of blacks in North Carolina from articles written by blacks. This work is a must read. It contains information detailing agricultural, religious and education history, among other subjects. It culminates with stories about hundreds of families from North Carolina as family members recount their history based on their memories and stories told and passed down from their ancestors. I've recommended it to many of my family members as well as friends of all races.

Of all the words produced on the Clans, this is one of the best. Not a coffee table display, it is a comprehension history of the Highland Clans. There are tons of pictures, and this detailed history of the origins of each clan, maps and the little small details that set it apart from any work on Scotland and the Clans. I have literally worn this poor book down, and on my second copy. Cannot live without.
So if you are interested in the in depth history of the Highland Clans, this is a must for you.

"...throughout the book there is an orientation toward Lancaster County genealogy, with a lot of pertinent and historically correct identification of family backgrounds in Europe....The wider extent of German eighteenth century emigration is treated...and [Eshleman] is careful to give material on the spread of the Pennsylvania German population, particularly the sects, to Virginia and other parts of the South."--Don Yoder, The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine, XXVI:3 (1970)

Heitman's register is a must for any serious (by this I mean one who's interests extend beyond battles and weapons) student of the U.S. Army before 1900. The register has information on every regular army and all generals including promotions, assignments, awards, organization tables, lists of key officers etc.

But my branch of the tree tends to be malcontented men, who run away as soon as they are old enough and breaking family ties. Gave me a sense of who I am that is for sure. I will be forever grateful to John Adams Comstock. Anyone who has any Comstocks from Peru, Nebraska feel free to comment and introduce yourself. My family follows the tradition of naming people after presidents. Andrew Jackson Comstock and such maybe John Adams Comstock is realtion?

This book is a great resource for those who can trace their ancestors to the eastern half of Fairfield County. It covers the time period from the 1630's to the early 1800's. It is not 100% complete but is considered to be very accurate. In addition to dates of birth, marriage and death there is often information about land ownership, military service, and biographical details.
